Wow, what a cluster. Kind of glad I'm still sitting this out. My dual 980m's are chugging along just fine. I am hoping the next revision fixes the clunky dual power bricks, or adds a mid height mechanical keyboard to the gt73 line.

Dude chill,
I see a lot of people on this thread super mad with MSI which I don't think is entirely fair. Yeah this whole thing is a cluster which sucks but they probably could have weaseled their way out of this whole thing if they wanted. All I know is that they're keeping their promise of allowing me to upgrade my laptop at a pretty large cost to them. No need to call the person who had to write the program letter incompetent or a liar because they're allowing late applications. It could be easier yes but there's probably only a few MSI employees assigned to this program - I'm sure they're doing what they can. -
After 2 deadlines have been raised without definition and with that latest reply from MSI USA Trade-in Team, this is how I read the situation.
There is a cultural POV that perhaps we don't see, or understand, given "deadlines" I usually give an explanation or reason for the deadline along with the deadline announcement - like it's a deadline for this quarter, or for this model release, or whatever.
MSI USA are saying they are honoring the ongoing commitment to providing 2 generations of GPU upgrades for MSI USA region - but it would have been nice if they just came out and said it alone with the deadline declarations.
When the 12/31/2016 deadline was given, since the previous 11/30/2016 deadline had already passed and was extended, I asked what the purpose of the "monthly" deadlines. I was told they aren't monthly, they are given to push people to ("get off their butts and" (my words)) to submit the upgrade form before a transition time.
There was also an unannounced looming end of Skylake models season, MSI Trade-in Team were already running out of their allocation for Skylake laptop trade-ins, so they wanted to get as many in as possible before Kabylake (and the MSRP's went up, warning posted at that time by another owner).
I would imagine there could be another "deadline" around the end of the Kabylake model season - but maybe not - or maybe a non-release aligned deadline

Herne-Boernig, Germany 18/01/2017 3:55 Departure Scan
Must only be 1 hour away from Poland.
Delivery should be tomorrow, then Friday or Monday should get an email, pay monies and then computer by Thursday. -
Same herne boernig departure 3.55am. First time posting here but I have been reading since the start of the thread. so hello all.
-
Wow, they must of sent the letters of as a batch, I got mine Saturday and posted my laptop of on monday morning, it went from derby to Tamworth, barking then Herne-Boernig.
I think our laptops should be in Poland right now, not sure when the next update will be.
They will have it tomorrow, definitely.
Now its just a race to see who can get there looked at first.
I`m just waiting so I can pay for it the min I get that email.
Im just hitting that refresh button every 5 mins.hmscott, Leinad1989 and MiSJAH like this. -
Did they not offer cross shipping? or did you just not want to do that due to the hold on funds?MiSJAH likes this.

No, I wasn't offered that, not that I have a spare £2500 to tie up.
Id would just rather wait and pay the difference, I`m hoping it wont be too much.
I`m still wondering if we will get a retail box or if its going to be an OEM style.
I might just take pics of the unn boxing and compare computers via benchmarks.hmscott, Leinad1989 and MiSJAH like this. -
Haha it is pretty cool that all our laptops are together. I keep pressing the refresh button every 5 mins too haha. Shifts in work have been so hard knowing I'm not coming home to a laptop to play haha cannot wait for the new one! Whilst msi haven't been perfect far from it infact I am thankful I'm going to be getting a brand spanking new gt83vr. My only gripe is I'd of rather kept 1tb worth of ssds opposed to these new faster ssds and having less space.

You going for SLI ?
I was thinking about SLI, but I don't think I would use it that much.
Same reason why I`m dropping from 32Gb to 16Gb and same with the ssd space.
I don't think its worth the extra £300 for 16gb and 256gb ssd.
I could probably source it cheaper my self.
I still have a 128GB ssd chip from my old msi 72 2qe laptop, that should fit into my new one.
Anyway, hope you enjoy your gt83vr.
As for MSI, I have had no problems with them, they fixed my laptop, always answered my questions.
Even though it varies from 1 day to two weeks, but I guess it depends on how busy they are.
Same with the trade in program, we have no idea how many people are working on it.
I`m guessing its just a few people, I would buy MSI again, I`m really happy with my computer and customer services.
Only thing that bugs me is if anything goes wrong I have to ship it to Poland.
But hey at least our polish friends have a job, so Id rather not have them change shipping to the uk.mason2smart and hmscott like this. -
I'm getting double the SSD as 256GB PCIe (old 128GB sata), double the RAM as 16GB DDR4 (old 8 GB DDR3), 120Hz display (old 60Hz) and Kabylake (old Haswell) for £600, oh and GTX 1070 (old GTX 980M).
Edit: warranty 2 years (old 90 days).
How does that compare with your deals @Neo79 @Leinad1989? -
For my gt80 I'm having to pay 880 for 1070 sli I was going to go for 1080s but I can't justify the extra 500 odd quid I don't game at 4k atm and the most I'd probably go is 1440p until 4k games reach around 80 to 100fps. Same ram 32gb but ddr4 unless it's a typo I'm going from 1tb worth of ssds and 1tb hdd to 250gb ssd 1tb hdd. This is going to be hard to adjust to because I filled my gt80 right up with games. But I guess I can always add more in ?
Also went with skylake as I was quoted 300 more for kabylake with less ram... but more ssd space
Overall whilst not smooth I do love msi the build quality on my gt80 titan was so solid and it still looks brand new. 880 pound for a high end laptop I'm not really complaining just wish there comms were a bit better. -
For me I`m losing the Dragon special edition.
Loosing 16Gb memory from 32Gb and losing 256Gb of ssd going from 512Gb Raid0.
I do upgrade from 980 GTX desktop gpu to 1080.
For around £280, keeping the memory and ssd would cost me £500-£600.
Other than that its a straight swapp.Leinad1989, MiSJAH and hmscott like this. -
Tbf like others have said I never really saw my gt80 titan use more than 16gb not even close to that tbh plus ram is always upgradeable and ssd 280 pound for a 1080 isn't to shabby at all.

-
All 3 or 4, I don't think there are many UK customers aware of the scam. I think we all received our shipping labels at the same time, so posted that day.
-
Is that all? I wonder how many people know about the trade in program.
I only got the Msi because you could swap the gpu. As soon as I got my laptop I was asking on the official Msi forum about upgrades.
It was only by chance that I seen the usa upgrade program. It hasn't been widely advertised, which seem strange.
Hopefully if there is only a small volume of laptops, then they should easily work through them. So we should find out today or tomorrow.hmscott, Leinad1989 and MiSJAH like this. -

Whenever I am about to purchase a top end laptop, there is that moment of "sanity" that tries to invade and potentially ruin the fun times.
Don't let that moment of "second guessing" pull you down into a decision you will eventually possibly regret not making.
Every awesome laptop comes with a sacrifice - money, time, focus.
Of course you don't want to spend your rent or lunch money on such a dream laptop - those problems truly will invade your fun times.
If you are right on the border, but can make it with a little thoughtful effort, then do it. Or, wait a little longer, save a little more, and then pull the trigger.
The only problem with money in a pile - it attracts "emergencies" that will eat that whole pile, and make you think "hey, good thing I waited", when in fact the emergency wouldn't have shown up if that pile of money were properly invested in a cool laptop
The other problem with waiting is other "fillies" will show up dancing in front of your eye's to eat that same pile of money. Focus is important.
You'll know when it's time to pull the trigger, the key thing to remember is to pull it when it's time.
Get the 1080 SLI!!
or
get the GT73VR single 1080, then you have the fastest GPU to play all games.Last edited: Jan 19, 2017mason2smart and Leinad1989 like this. -
I see it this way, a single 1080 will beat a 1070, but dual 1070 will beat 1080. Now only supported software will run sli. So if you ever have any games which won't work with sli. The 1080 card would win.
I was thinking about sli, but for me it's just not worth it. Same as having all that extra memory. I think a 1080 would be better than 1070 sli but that's just my opinion.mason2smart, Leinad1989 and hmscott like this. -
At 1080p with a 60-75Hz screen even dual 1070's are overkill.

My thoughts exactly 1070 sli it is thanks for that. it's plenty and although sli is lacking these days there's quite often a work around and if there's not I just wait until the game is patched and supports it. Also I've seen a few videos of overclocked 1070s coming quite close to a stock 1080? If I were to spend the extra on the 1080 sli my girlfriend wouldn't be getting her watch for valentines day
and I maybe couldn't afford to fill my petrol eating car for work haha........ probably worth it tho
Also I overclocked the gt80 screen to 100hz so hoping to do this with the gt83Last edited by a moderator: Jan 19, 2017mason2smart, hmscott and MiSJAH like this. -
Has anyone doing cross shipping had trouble being reimbursed? I sent my unit in several weeks ago but the value hasn't been returned to my card, and MSI wont answer my emails. Going to call up the rep I have been working with today.

The company definitely needs to work on its comms but they make such good laptops I find it so hard to slate them haha they could of avoided a lot of problems though if they would just communicate with us openly and honestly.MiSJAH, woolfman72 and hmscott like this. -
This emphasises the incompetence MSI has demonstrated from the beginning of this debacle.
I genuinely hope this is incompetence and not and intentional method to withhold funds. -
Wonder how long it will take for us to hear back that our laptops haven't been smashed to pieces in transit and are worth the value that was quoted to us ? -
i sent an email this morning asking for an update and was provided a tracking number and my new laptop will be delivered tomorrow.
Leinad1989 and hmscott like this. -
Right, I have an update now that I spoke with a representative by phone. My apologies for the previous posts, was a bit annoyed.
I believe my previous situation may have been unclear, so I will clarify first, in case anyone else has this problem. Figured it was the least I could do.
I did the cross-ship option, and my original unit had been sent in by me via package carrier once I received my new unit. I received a confirmation from the package carrier on the successful delivery, and that it had been signed for. I gave MSI a couple days to get back to me, before sending a query email regarding my unit, if it had arrived, and if it had passed or was in inspection, this went unanswered until now. Recently the bill dropped, several weeks later, and upon checking, there was no reimbursement seen - which sent the concern-wheels spinning. I didn't know what was going on, my information was limited to an unanswered email and a bill. Perhaps I should have jumped on it again a bit earlier, but alas.
I was informed that I was on the reimbursement list, maybe things are just a bit slow after the New Year. Would have been preferential to be notified, but I know some things take time. If anyone else has this situation, I would recommend getting a hold of the rep. Hoping they finish the process soon.Leinad1989, Kevin@GenTechPC and hmscott like this. -
mason2smart Notebook Virtuoso
No the previous model with 2x 1080 and 6920 was $2kbriedfox likes this. -
But what does MSRP have anything to do with it? The first e-mail clearly states that the upgrade price is equal to the cost of upgrading GPUs alone. The fact that *well owners got the same pricing supports this claim. Randomly tacking on +$50 for Kaby Lake is also completely unfounded based on their own claims.
briedfox and mason2smart like this. -
MSI structured the trade-in options to expand on just offering 1 trade-in option that is closest to the owners model that is being traded in.
That model charge is supposed to be only based on the GPU upgrade differential.
MSI increased the choices to the whole GT laptop model line, which can be the same frame or a whole different model line.
The different models have different GPU's, amounts of memory / storage, different feature sets - more or less than the owners laptop.
Where the MSRP comes in is for MSI to charge the difference between the MSRP of the Tier 1 model vs the Tier 2 model, you pay the difference +/- the Tier cost.
That's how MSI USA is allowing us more flexibility in choosing the laptop we want to get on the trade-in.
MSI has an inventory of Skylake trade-in models remaining available for trade-in, so the $50 for Kabylake is likely to encourage owners to pick a Skylake model over the Kabylake model.
If MSI had offered a $50 discount for picking a Skylake model instead to encourage owners to get the previous models I think it would have been better received, and accomplished the same effect. -
I understand the model-swap MSRP difference. My issue is that my original $2000 offer for the 1080 SLI GT83 from my 980 SLI GT80 turned into a $2150 offer. And from my understanding, the 980M to 1070 offer is now $1650 instead of $1400. If I remember correctly, people have also reported that some of the Skylake models aren't even available anymore. Of course a $50 discount for Skylake would be acceptable, since that would still leave the Kaby Lake options in line with their original e-mail of "just the GPU upgrade cost." You can also argue that by offering Skylake models at the original price, they are still honoring that, and I agree, but once they run out of Skylake there is no way they should be upcharging customers $50.
briedfox likes this. -
Tell MSI, that's who you need to convince to change the cost increase. But, I don't think it's going to amount to anything given MSI's statements that they haven't accepted a lower offer on any trade-ins.
Did the MSRP go up from Skylake to Kabylake models you are wanting to get on trade-in? There were material improvements like that cool new keyboard that makes the new model more appealing, and therefore cost more.
Did you ask MSI to go ahead with the Skylake trade-in? Did MSI say they don't have any?
If MSI say they are out of that original quoted Skylake model, then I'd say you should ask to get the Kabylake one which is the one now available that replaced it, for the same quoted cost since you have already been quoted a price for a model that no longer exists.
Did MSI put a time frame on accepting the offer they gave you? If they didn't they should have, that's standard procedure to have an offer expire after a period of time, like say 30 days, or the price may change.
The problem with granting you a "discount" due to the open offer to you (unless it's expired) is that it would set a precedent on the trade-in price for that new Kabylake model, you'd share that great price with others, and then they'd go to MSI saying that they should get it for the same cost - even though they are coming in fresh with no previous offer on the table.
In effect if MSI offers a discount to 1 person, MSI are really offering that discount to everyone, which is why I think they are holding the line on pricing and not negotiating.Last edited: Jan 20, 2017 -
I did tell MSI. I'm also discussing it here because Mason brought it up.
The RGB keyboard is irrelevant to me and most certainly not worth an additional $150 on top of the previous model. I haven't executed the trade-in yet, but with Skylake models out of production, it's only a matter of time before they're gone. We'll see how MSI responds. -
Hopefully they still have the previous gen model still in stock
I agree about the keyboard, although maybe setting it to 1 solid color other than red would make a nice change up once in a while.
The new GT83VR 7920HQ and 7820HK Kabylake CPU's have +300mhz higher defaults and they appear to be offering better top end OC, but that's still all new info and still being tested - and too variable by CPU sample to depend on it, but it is an exciting development.
I know you are part of this thread, but others might not have seen it, start reading @HaloGod2012 's post here to the end of the ongoing discussion in the thread (and in the GT83VR Owners thread):
http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...scussion-thread.794965/page-366#post-10438577
Better CPU Stock and OC performance would be a big factor in my accepting the higher cost between Skylake and Kabylake offers.Last edited: Jan 20, 2017 -
Can anyone elaborate on the cross-exchange process? Is it one of those, they send you a unit and you send them your unit simultaneously / within a specified time frame? Is there an additional cost, or am I paying the upgrade fee?
-
I think from what others have posted is that you have to pay the full laptop value whilst yours Is assessed and then they reimburse your discount value. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Assessment of old unit has been completed. Waiting for next stage details.
