I got an e-mail from an MSI rep yesterday saying he was going to call me in a few days to walk me through the trade-in process. I too had not heard anything since October. I purchased my laptop from xoticpc and Pat helped me get in touch with an MSI rep. I was getting worried since a lot of people got their specific offers while I had heard nothing. I kept emailed them every day also so I'm sure that may have helped too. I know they have a small team working on this but a few e-mails letting us know what's going on along the way would have helped. When my son is old enough I will be buying his laptop from Xoticpc. They did not have to help since this had nothing to do with them but Pat, even on the weekend, would keep me updated.

It's been 7 days since I replied about which option I wanted and so far not a peep from them. The MSI rep I heard from was Ming Rong.

When MSI emailed me last, this was at the top of the email for my US submission:
Hello!
Thank you for your interest in our MSI USA Trade-In-Program, only for US customer. There is no deadline for the trade-in applicants.
Program is for: GT80(s) and GT72(s) with GTX 9xx Series GPU
Trading in for: New GTxxVR Series laptop with GTX10xx Series GPU w/ 2 year Warranty
Looks like there is no longer a deadline for submissions.hmscott likes this. -
Same person that i received the email from as well, i literally responded within 45 minutes of receiving the email. So it is odd why i wpuld not have an immediate/reasonable time reply especially when the email was received around 9pm PST

Guess they can't upgrade their internet, too. Stuck in the outbox for too long.

I'm glad to see you got some movement there. If you do need anything else, just ask, and I'll try to help where I can.
Awesome, thanks for that update. That's good to know for everyone around here. -
Hey MSI just sitting here twiddlin my thumbs, kinda like waiting for a reply w my coffee
-
I'm from BC Canada and own a GT80 2QESLI980's, I'm gonna make a stink with them, just sent in a form, I was promised upgradable GPUs matt daemmit!!

MSI called me last night and got my offer. They did not have a GT72 with my specs so I'm getting a GT73 Titan with the new processor a 1070 and a 120Hz screen. Less ram and less SSD though. For those of you that have not heard anything, MSI said they had me marked down as offer received when I did not get anything. Keep sending those e-mails daily asking for updates. That's what I did. Maybe they mistakenly marked some of us offer received. They are shipping the new one with a hold on my credit card for the full amount and when I get it I'll be sending mine out.

That's good, so you will finally be getting your upgrade soon. -
What were your specs and are you saying they are upgrading you at no extra cost to get similar to what you had or are you opting to pay more to move to the 73VR.
I ask this because the newer GT72VR cant remotely match my current specs, would be nice if they offered ability to step up to a 73VR at price offered on a top 72VR w 1070 and 6820, i would settle for 73VR w 1070 and 7700 w 128 nvme or even a 1060 w 7700 if that was offered

My current specs are listed in my signature. Yes they are upgrading my upgrade at no charge. I forgot to ask about my extended warranty I purchased through Xotic PC. I probably will eat the 8 remaining months. I think the new ones come with a 2-year MSI warranty.

I've gone 4 months without a reply after answering the 5 questions. I tried to email them once a day for a week a few weeks ago. I've gotten nowhere with them.

Has anyone been having any better luck on the upgrades lately? Has the pricing changed at all with the drop in GPU prices?

Still nothing in France, we got *nothing*, it was like okey : 1200euros for an upgrade to 1060 (selling and buying would cost me 500euros max to 1070) OR GO TO HELL CUSTOMER
I'm not buying MSI anymore, laptops and everything else, I'm an IT Engineer, I will never recommend MSI product and will be defamatory when i speak with people about their products (bad warranty, bad quality, no support, no drivers)..
(DANS TA FACE MSI, like we say in french
)
Would rather go for BGA and not buy MSI ! -
I share your frustration over how this was handled. The worst part is - I would bet that many of the folks who bought these top end devices are in IT or a related industry. Until this is properly resolved, I don't have anything good to say about the company. It makes me feel even worse to know that they told us the upgrades are impossible, yet users are adding 1060's and 1070's to older laptops by using modified drivers.
I can appreciate that 1080 might not be an option due to the change in hardware, but they didn't even try. -
So what are they exactly upgrading you to? I have the identical laptop specced out the same but only after I added the additional 16GB ddr3 and another 3 M.2 128 SSD. Mine is the 1666 version with 128 M.2/1 TB HDD and 980m, I believe I have BR but not writer, never used the thing lol and only 7 mths oldMiSJAH likes this.
-
So i just got my response back from them. Does anyone know if the new laptops come with a new processor as well or is it literally the same exact laptop that you give them but the new gpu?
MiSJAH likes this. -
They are clearly offering you a brand new laptop, are they not?
-
They are. I just want to know if going from a 970m with a 4700 i7 cpu to a 1070 and a 7700 i7 is worth $800. That is actually what I wanted to know. No dancing around.
MiSJAH likes this. -
800$ ? I believe then it's a quite good deal. But are you going from GT72 to GT72 VR or GT73 VR ? GT72 VR is stripped down so then it's a not so good deal...
-
Well I paid $900, to go from 4702HQ and 980M, to a 6820HK and 1070.
I'm deducing that you are looking at the GT72VR, since the GT73VR doesn't have any 7700HQ SKUs. How much more is it for you to get a 7280HK?MiSJAH likes this. -
It's so unfair that some countries are getting nothing. NOTHING (or ridiculous offers) ! and others are getting proper offers (even if MSI shouldn't be forcing my upgrade, but if they do, at least the price must be correct)...
edit: I sent them a mail with the offer of MSI UK of the last post saying that MSI UK respects their customers, and 1300euros cannot be okey for a downgrade to GT72VR + 1060 !Last edited: Mar 21, 2017 -

Hey @cisco kidd Still waiting right? 20 days later, still no reply from Ming on this end. I did email him but no response. I assume you're still in the same boat.
-
@mkinasz , I got my reply and have sent my credit card info in which has been confirmed of receipt. Below is a screenshot of my offerings for my 8 mth old GT72 2QE 1666 Dominator Pro G 980M , i7 5700HQ, 16GB DDR3 , 128 M.2 & 1 TB HDD.
No negotiations or modifications or changes allowed to whats been offered.
I have decided to chose the base GT72VR Dominator w 120hz, 1060 GTX & 256 SSD for $400 or the $550 option w GT72 Dom Pro G, 1070 GTX & 128 SSD. I decided I want Kaby Lake so these are my options within budget. My last question was to clarify if the included SSD's are pcie nvme based or M.2 SATA III. Waiting for a reply to this last question and sending my unit off this week. I am not paying more than $550 as I plan to trade in again before warranty is up in 2 yrs. Blue highlight is Kaby Lake yellow is Skylake, limited stock I was told on Pro-450. I would only choose a Skylake based unit if it had a 6820 since what research I have done show i7 7700HQ to be about 3-5% faster than Skylake 6820, correct me if wrong
What I am a bit pissed off about is even with this GT upgrade the only way I will get a pcie nvme SSD is by upgrading to the GT73VR series and even then it will be a 128GB version which is kinda useless so I may as well go GT72 save cash and just buy a larger pcie nvme SSD or I can rip the 256 out and stick it into wifes PC and recover my Kingston Predator 240 AHCI pcie based SSD which is faster but not as fast as gen3x4

Oh cool cisco, thanks for the update. Glad it's in progress... gives me hope mine will start soon. You've dealt with them via email only right? If I recall correctly, I thought someone else said MSI called them.
-
Its been all email correspondence for me, I just need to decide spend $400 or $550, hope you get your email soon and can upgrade -
Can everyone from France who got nothing (****ty offers) from MSI inbox me ? Thanks ! There is an investigation going by the gouvernement !
By the way the 1070 (not mods) WORKS FLAWLESSLY (drivers mods, heatsink from the GT62VR) in the GT72S, guess it went super saiyan (VR mode) to handle the terrible power of the 1070 instead of the 980M, oh god poor machine !

US trade in offer for my MSI GT72 2QE 1666 Dom Pro G 75hz w i7 5700HQ, 980m 4gb, 16GB DDR3, 128 M.2 SSD & 1TB HDD/ BD Writer
I decided I want near equivalent or better than what I have and this was offered today
$800 US >> MSI GT73VR 427 (7820HK, 1TB HD, 120hz, 1070 8GB, 16GB 2400)
I keep Super Raid, gain an i7 7820HK, nvme SSD, 1070GTX w 120hz plus a fresh 2 yr warranty
I lose Blue Ray & MUX and have never used my BR.
$800 upgrade seems fair but I feel should be about $700 tbhKevin@GenTechPC likes this. -

The CPU upgrade would be worth it for you. The 6820HK/7820HK can do 4.0GHz with ease, maybe a little bit more on the kaby lake and that's on all 4 cores not boost or anything and you'll need that speed to drive a 1070/1080. The 1070 is a big bump for the 980M, heck its a good bump from the 980, its at and above 980Ti levels from last gen. You keep the MUX switch, you can switch from igpu/dgpu, its the GT72VR that you lose the switch. The 120Hz screen is worth it imo, esp missing it from my desktop. The only thing you do lose is that BR if you use it at all though you could always get an external drive. You get less ram (if you use all 32GB) but you get that speed bandwidth.Kevin@GenTechPC likes this. -
Thats what i figure, and good to know mux is retained not that i have ever used it as my current unit sits on a cooler and really is extended to my ultra wide led. The offer is decent and i plan to ship mine off Friday and go for it. Had considered waiting for Volta but Kaby Lake will be used as cpu in first round of new notebooks so i am fine making the move now and getting the value for my unit that i am. Thanks for the feedback

Hi Everyone
@cisco kidd . How did you get them to change the offer ? Because MSI gave me the same pricing for the laptops that you received. And I didnt find any laptop in new GT72VR series that matches the one I have. I have GT72S Dominator G-037 with GTX 970M, i7-6820hk 32 GB RAM. The one i am getting seems to be stripped down version of GT72S. I am leaning more to wait for Volta.
Would like to hear everyone opinion before I reply to MSI. -

You can explain to their rep and when your counter offer is reasonable then they can actually revise it for you. -
I bought an external BR drive.
Have used it a couple times, just like the one built into my GT72. -
Exactly, I was able to reach coordinator by phone and just discussed it , reviewed what I had and where I wanted to go pricewise that's fair

Already did contact DDPP
I also posted on MSI official French forum to ask everybody to do the same. Hoping a lawsuit will start soon !

I sent quite a few counters and never heard a peep. How did you obtain the rep's phone number?

I think it was actually @mkinasz that got them on the phone.
