Does this laptop support AHCI mode within the BIOS? If I get this, I would probably pair it up with a OCZ Vertex 3.

    Thanks.

As to the touchpad, do you already have a GT780R, or is this your experience with MSI touchpads in general?

    :)

This is a good question for Ken. He just got a shipment of these, and he is presently working on a review video. I am sure we will know the answer to this soon!

Totally agree on the Vertex 3..... precisely my choice, as a 'primary'!

    :) :) :)

Thanks Ken. You are very helpful as always. I reach P2236 with my GX660 at 3DMark11 with no overclocking. So, I guess 5870 is still one of the best in field of top rated mobile GPUs. :)

Agree, the 5870 still one of the best out there, have you try Crisis 2 yet? I would like to play it but just been too busy. :p

Note, the clolor of WASD keys can not be change independently on the actual GT780R unit, I ask MSI they said it's on the roadmap of future software update.

Yep. The only thing I really want on my GX660 is keyboard from GT780R. Visually the keyboards are the same. Ken, can you please check how many cables GT780 keyboard has? Two(one for led backlit) or one? And if they are the same in dimensions and have same connections I will consider to find one for my GX660.

On GT683R is WD Scorpio black, but on this batch of GT780R they use Seagate ST9500420AS. They advertise it has 1TB 7200 rpm not brand name so they can always switch to different brands when parts are shortage.

Ok, so I am confused. Is it confirmed no barebone for the 17in GT780R?
I would search myself, but I am on the way back to the states. Not much time to search forums or google. I thought I had seen somewhere on here it was due in July.

    agreed

I had to go back and read this tread a couple times, but I'm pretty certain the barebones referred to here is for the GT683R. A bit confusing, since we are talking about both systems in the same thread. Once owners threads get up for each, that should help.

Oh, and thanks to the folks at PowerNotebooks that posted the info about the screen -- contrast ratio looks relatively decent.

According to the pdf downloadable manual from msi global website, the touchpad is called a "smartpad" and support gestures and multi touch.

You use 2 fingers on the pad to scroll. (up,down, left, right)

The only barebone's out now for the MSI GT680/GT683 are the 16F2's. They are close to the GT683. Both GTX 560M and GT460M available in this barebone for those interested. Unfortunately no GT780 barebones yet.

Looks like the GT780R has a video now:

    http://youtu.be/Jun8MFqsrbg?hd=1

With the keyboard it seems like a sane mans Alienware :D

If they came up with a Matte screen and mechanical keyboard (w/ lighting) on the same unit OMG I would be so sold. I really want to make my next unit a matte screen and Steel Series makes a really popular mechanical keyboard so I wonder how this one on the laptop feels.

Genious cooling system of the G780R. Dual exhaust and most importantly, GPU and CPU are right beside the cooling fan. GPU right below the fan and GPU right on the left. Not the usual from the left to right: fan with one exhaust, CPU then GPU far away from the fan.

Other things I like about the laptop is:
    - Steelseries keyboard. Probably very good reliability and design
    - Illuminated keyboard with the possibility to change colours
    - Matte screen (YAY!!)
    - Subwoofer and excellent audio speakers
    - Perforated bottom where the fan can suck air through
    - Smart buttons that let you eject optical drive and even turn off the screen while listening to music with a single touch.
    - Battery located "inside" the chassis. The battery is not sticking out from the back.

Very good review video Gentech :)
Let us pray that the keyboard doesnt flex like a trampoline

DO you think that the GT683R has that kind of keyboard?

I just saw a video about someone showing their GT660 laptop and he mentioned how some of his keys are not leveled the same as his other keys.

And he described it as "flexing".

I would hate to have that on a GT683 laptop..

One thing I've noticed in the video (concern) is how close the HDD is to the heat sink. I am talking about the HDD right below the subwoofer. Do you think that may cause an issue? I wonder if it will be OK to use some high temp silicone between the two... Just saying...

I just looked over the manual for the GT780R, and it noted the components that can be easily upgraded. It did not mention anything about the GPU or CPU. Can these be upgraded, as well?

    Ken,

Two things I noted from the video:

    1) No rundown of the ports on the left side.

    2) No evaluation of typing on the keyboard.

While the first one is minor, we can all read manuals, the second one is key, no pun intended. A major flaw in many of the recent laptop systems is the flexing of the keyboard. While we all think the SteelSeries keyboard will not flex, we really need some independent evaluation on that.

    Thanks!
    Homer

Yes the CPU and GPU can be access easily by just remove the bottom cover. heatsink can be remove easily as well by just remove few screws.

1: The video clip was deleted by accident before upload to youtube.

2: I can do a separate video of the typing on keyboard.

CPU can be upgrade easily but not GPU, there is not other GPU available from MSI.

    Hey Ken,

Do you notice any flexing on the GT683 laptop?

Did they improve the keyboard over the GT680?

    Thanks.
