I didn't test just the keyboard on GT683, I assume they are all the same but I can check again tomorrow.

I'm wondering when the GX680 and GT/GX780 will finally be available in The Netherlands... They still only have the G T680, and nobody over here has a clue about an estimated date for the 780.

Wow, the keyboard doesn't flex so much, the best I've seen.. That's expected from SteelSeries, yeah!! =D

Dynaudio's quality is really top class, but I've a friend mentioned that JBL speakers from Dell Studio are awesome as well, can someone clarify and confirm this?

    Ken,
I have question regarding GT780 speakers? They are the same as in GT/GX6x0 laptops? What is your subjective feeling about sound quality GT780 vs GT/GX6x0? thanks for answer :)

You guys act suprised about the typing test.

You mean none of you knew Kens full name is Kenshiro? He and his brother Shin can type so hard that it pokes a hole right into a person.

The speakers are the same for both models, the only difference I notice from one of the GT780R is when playing the music the keyboard of the GT78R vibrates nears the right hand side edge.

I didn't notice the vibrating issue when playing musics on GX660, but I do notice on GT780R on the right hand side but that's just one unit I've seen has the problem, could be poor assembly job, or the keys does vibrating on that particular unit.

    Ya, he does =)
He has given me advice over my dilemma about ASUS & MSI..

However, it's clear now that this GT780R has more advantages than the G74SX. I'm just sad that I've been a loyal fan of ASUS and that they didn't really improvise the rig much.. I've waited for a year or so for the perfect laptop..

Now,I'm happy I made the right choice of picking this GT780R, hehe XD

I suppose it'll take 1-2 weeks to reach to me.. Tim, not buying? =)

I'm eagerly awaiting news on a refresh with a better GPU. I mean the 560m is a beast, but before I toss away my GX660R, I'd like a definite GPU upgrade, not a sidegrade.

But, I tell you, it's hard to resist. The features on this thing, from the keyboard to the hotkeys to the standard specs, are awesome.

One thing I'm wondering, Ken. If the hotkey is needed to open the ODD, would you be able to open it in BIOS or another OS? The hotkey controls are drivers, right?

I'm a big Asus fan, too, if you look at my sig graphic. My last two major laptops were Asus (G50vt and G51vx) and I had one of their 1215n netbooks for a while before giving it to my brother. The thing is, though, the features on the GX660R simply overrode any brand loyalty I had. Plus, we have Ken here who can help us if we're not sure how to handle problems.

But hey, I still build a lot of my desktops with Asus parts.

ARGH! (feeling a faintness) NAW! You didn't go THERE!

(OK, lemme think...... chill out! AH HA! Ok, better now!)

Now ya see, logic has revived me and prevailed! I KNOW that unit could not be mine, because with all the '-=$tr|k3Rz=- Essentials' I ordered, mine has to be in a bizillion lil' pieces right now...... on some techy's bench, getting 'gold-standard', white-gloved treatment.

(or so I would like to believe...... ahhhhhh, yes....... I will continue to dream this!)

And, another thing..... when you did that video, I know you were at home...... sipping a nice cold one....... so it COULD NOT have been mine, cause mine is on the techy's bench....... getting 'gold-standard', white-gloved...... (yada, yada, yadi yada yada)

So how's THAT for logic folks? (wishful thinking can be logical, right?)

Besides Ken, don't you realize you just gave me a reason to ship that darn thing right back to you? I'm gonna inspect er' VERY CLOSELY! :p

    It'll be here tomorrow, right?

    :D :D :D

Nope. I really love the keyboard in GT780. But my current GX660 is more that enough for couple of years to come. Till next gen consoles from Microsoft and Sony will be released(coz most of modern games are limited by console performance), this laptop will play all games on high settings without any problems. Ahhh... I really miss backlit keyboard in my laptop.

Hey guys I am in same boat with you. Another Asus fan here. Had G73JH, but my GX660 totally blowed me away with it's performance, cooling(cooling is one of the best) and superb sound. :D

    Haha :D

Its gonna stick just like Techno Viking stuck to me.

At any rate odd that I see a lot of my Asus brothers in here and I am here myself. I was quite interested in this model.

I almost got the 3D G73 just for the matte screen and in the end figured it was not enough of an upgrade to warrent the cost, esp when the gpu was actually a downgrade from my 5870 and I never wanted to use the 3D.

Now here we have a laptop with a matte screen that is not super expensive, no 3d gimmick, and it has the kicking speakers & keyboard to go along with it.

Im still going to stick with my G73 for now as I like the looks & performance of my G73 so much and no model yet is quite a big "upgrade" but this is pretty close.

Next cycle or so MSI or Asus may have something I can upgrade to.

    Ken,

Thanks for the keyboard video! I'm guessing typing and perhaps the occasional angry smoosh by a mere mortal will be fine.

Just have to get funding clearance and I'm golden!

Couple of changes I see making and would like some input, from anyone with direct experience.

    1) IC Diamond re-paste

    2) 4xBluRay

    3) No RAID

The reason I don't want the RAID is I'm probably going to upgrade the primary to a Momentus XT 500GB and that should make it easier. The only reason I don't want the vendor to do it is I'd like to keep the 500 GB drive to upgrade another lappy.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure I was clear in my last question, so let me clarify below :)

I was really referring to future upgrades -- not current customization options. In other words, the GPU isn't soldered to the motherboard or anything, is it? Or, are there any stickers inside the unit that void the warranty if tampered with/removed? Also, will a 150W power supply be enough for future (2-3 years from now) changes in CPU or GPU? I know the Clevo I'm looking at comes with a 180W, which helps a bit in that regard...

Newb question - to take advantage of the USB 3.0 ports you need to have an accessory that's capable of it, correct? For example, if I plugged my Logitech G110 keyboard into the 3.0 port would it be the same thing as plugging it into the 2.0 port?

What does upgrading your primary to a Momentus Hybrid Drive have to do with RAID?
I thought RAID will double the speed performance which is better?
Even I still enabled RAID with the upgrade of the primary to the Momentus Hybrid Drive.

I tested the hotkey to open ODD works everywhere, the BIOS and system boot. but the button is not very sensitive, sometimes I have to press it twice.

The only place it didn't work is in the RAID BIOS.

    Correct. :D

No the GPU is not soldered on the mainboard, it's a standard MXM card and standard size, which means it's a high density multi layer higher quality PCB.

The warranty void sticker is not inside the unit, it's outside of the unit where one of the screws to open the bottom cover just like GX660/GT680/GT683.

150W won't be sufficient for future GPU upgrade, I think anything above 560M needs a 180W AC adapter.

1: The stock thermal paste is MX-2 and works very well.

2: If you want to watch blu-ray movies on your laptop.

3: RAID settings can be change at anytime, it's just you will need to re-image the OS. so yes disable RAID for future primary hard drive make sense.

I'll see if I can do another video and type more gently. :)

Are larger power supplies for laptops readily available?

Also, with the warranty sticker, does that mean if the back of the case is opened that MSI considers the warranty voided? Apologies for all the questions, but I have only owned desktops up to this point (see sig, lol).

    Thanks :)

As more people receive there notebooks it will be useful. Thanks for all your help.

No it's not available from MSI or Asus, Clevo has it but their connector are different from 150W, it won't fit. So you might want to look for some other brands.

Officially yes if the warranty sticker is tampered the warranty is void.

    ******unofficially*******
Never have problem with MSI warranty when the warranty stickers is removed.

There are internal/external warranty void stickers on the unit. MSI has a new MSI BTO Gaming partner program so that upgrades can be performerd by preferred gaming partners without voiding the manufactures warranty. Removing the "warranty void" label by an end user will void the manufactures warranty if not performed by a preferred gaming partner. ( MSi Can Verify this information by contact.)

    [email protected],

I checked your site and I tried configuring the MSI GT780R..

I see that a Intel Ultimate 6300 in a GT780R will cause poor performance and interference. Would you mind explaining this to me?

I just don't understand why, it should improve in terms of performance since it is 450mbps and has 3 antennas.

The issue I have with RAID 0 is if one drive fails, you lose the data. Also, I'm thinking the Momentus as primary for OS and apps/games and the standard secondary as data storage. That way, I only have to configure backup for the secondary.

    I'm open for comments though.

So, you're saying skip the IC paste upgrade? I was thinking to avoid any issue with a messy/incomplete job by having it done by a trained professional!

Will your review have some temps at extreme load? If so, I wonder if Stryker will fire the same tests at his IC Diamond pasted one.

    Thanks,
    Homer

TIM install can be piece of mind. If you want that piece of mind its worth it.

I have not purchased MSI before so I have no idea how good they do with factor installs.

Most advanced users will do it themselves but of course you may start to enter the "will this void my warranty" problem.

If temps are good @ stock no reason to upgrade the TIM, its only when you find them too high that you should worry.

But again if its piece of mind your buying and not the lower temps sometimes that can be worth a lot.

Hm. This sounds a bit weird. It seems like they don't even want the owner to open it up to look at anything, upgrade a hard drive, replace an optical failure, etc. I was under the impression that MSI was sort of gamer-friendly, and gamers by default tend to "tamper" with their computers, lol.

If I'm understanding you right, I can't even remove the back to clean it inside--as I will need to do periodically--or MSI will consider my warranty voided? Really?

Can we get some clarification on this? I assume all the resellers belong to this new "gaming partner"program?
