Raid 0 setting's failure rate is equal to the failure rate of drive 1 + the failure rate of drive 2 minus 1/2 times the rate of simultaneous failures. Some people just don't want to take that risk over 2x write/read speeds as unrealistic as that sounds.
Like, some people don't want to migrate to SSD's yet cause of its unproven longevity. (<- that's me) I like the idea of one ssd or hybrid ssd on drive 1 and with mechanical for storage on drive 2. I prefer feeling secure cause I'm neurotic like that.![]()

Im pretty sure Raid 0 of 2 drives is simply 2x the failure possibility of a single drive no fancy formula needed.
Also 2x read/write is only in a best case scenario most often its much lower than that, and with several small files in random places it can even be slower than a single drive. -
Wonder how alienware owners does it. They upgrade their GPUs/CPUs and keep the old hardware just in case something bad happens and switch it back to the old config before sending it in. But what about the stickers? They must brake them to be able to take the hardware out right? -
This is my first post here. Has anyone tested the temps for gt780 under load? How about the noise? Asking since from what I see the lappy has got only one fan? Is this design better than that of Asus G74? I read from some reviews the G series from Asus are both quiet and cool even when stressed. Does the the 780 exhibit the same characteristics with One fan?
-

Under high stress, for example running Furmark, the temps at the GPU are in the low 90's and the fan is unusually quiet when compared to other models. No louder than the ASUS which has two fans.
The single fan has dual exhaust which is very effective.
On the palm rest and keyboard area it stays cool. The temps are in the high 70's to mid 80's throughout. It doesn't even feel warm. -
90s??
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
What would you expect running Furmark in extreme mode?
-
My 5870 runs better than that. -
Yeah something like that. If you are already on the 90s in a new laptop, then what will happen when the paste gets old or when the machine is collecting a bit of dust? Isn`t 100 degree celsius dangerous to the GPU?
-
Maybe it needs a proper repaste. they seem to slather that stuff on in the factory.
-
As Donald said, it's furmark. It's an unrealistic stress test, hence why nVidia throttles automatically when furmark is detected for desktop cards. A GPU will never be stressed like that in reality.
-
Ok I have never used Furmark before so I have no idea. What is the purpose of the "extreme" mode when reality is not like that?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
In engineering you always want to stress well beyond what is "normal", and that is the purpose of Furmark extreme mode. You will never see those temps in gaming because they cannot stress a GPU like Furmark does.

Hey Ken, about the warranty, if I have ordered the laptop from you and some mods were done to it(Vertex 3 120GB and IC diamond), when it arrives can I take off the bottom panel without voiding the warranty, or will this void it?
I want to take out the drives and plug them into my desktop system, so that I can copy all my files onto them. -

Thanks for the reply

and I have an Intel 6300 sitting next to my current machine right now, which i was planning on immediately installing. I did notice on Gentech's site they sell it for the GT780R and it's listed as "Intel 6300 + 3rd antenna mod" If anyone who knows whats up with this could shed some light on the subject that would be great.
I assume the stock unit is some type of atheros so I guess at least there will be good modded drivers if I can't use my 6300 -
Just updated graphics driver to 275.33 (had to use modded .inf from laptopvideo2go.com). Just noticed I am no longer able to adjust brightness with function keys as well as through Windows, I know things like this could get borked when using non oem drivers. Could someone confirm this issue.

Ah, I assumed it was something like that. Well, I suppose I'll go ahead and do some tests and post results for anyone curious since I have the part already. If anyone has the info about installing a third antenna, please share that info here
-
P.S. I know gentech will do a 3rd antenna mod (which i would have ordered on my system had I read more carefully) If that isn't super-secret insider knowledge, perhaps Ken will be willing to provide some insight for customer ;p

So, with the 3rd antenna mod, the GT780R should be able to fully utilise the performance of the Intel Ultimate 6300 right?
I've ordered a GT780R with an Intel Ultimate 6300, it better be able to fully utilise it otherwise it'd be a waste D= -
Does anybody know why the GT780R is still on preorder at Amazon if it should be in stock on 5/31? Does this essentially mean the laptop is released and should be in stock at all retailers, distributors, and warehouses (ignoring the fact that they may not have the shipment yet)
Is Amazon just slow, or did their shipment get delayed by ~1 week or something? -
The stock wireless card is Intel Wireless N 130:
http://www.intel.com/products/wireless/adapters/130/index.htm -
I guess I'll do speed tests and do some latency checking stuff. using a d-link DIR-655 as my router. -

Ya ya, do compare the 6300 and 6230 using the GT780R if you could =)
Mine should be arriving next week, can't wait!
Btw, any idea on what mouse and bagpack you plan to buy? -
Okay, so my GT780R came with a Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 130. I don't know how the hell to access the wifi card area yet on the laptop, it isn't visible when the bottom panel is removed so I'm doing some research right now. I don't really like what I've heard about the n 130, so I will be replacing it asap. note that the n130 is also bluetooth, so if you plan on using bluetooth at all, you will lose that if your replacement card doesn't have it, I personally never use it so no prob for me. As for a backpack, I'm gonna still use the one that came with my old Asus G71, and mouse, I've been using a logitech mx518 for years and couldn't imagine ever switching at this point
I'll let you know as soon as I can figure out how to swap out my wifi card -

I plan to get the Logitech G700, but it's a bit too big for me.. I wonder if they having a gaming mouse with those features, the most important one being a wireless & wired mouse that can recharge!! XD -
I am literally at a loss as to where the wireless card is on this. It seems it wasn't designed to be easily replaced as it isn't listed in the official "user-upgrades" section
-
-
Ah, thanks. I see now, unfortunately I don't know how they went and removed that. I don't want to blemish the case doing it wrong ;(

segadomcast, you said that ur GT780R will be at ur doorstep within hours right?
Where did you get one so fast? Where did you purchased it from?
I'm so envious! =( -

Hey Guys,
Still a work-in-progress, but quick access to GT780R info links, pics, videos, etc., can be found in the lead post of the 'Owner's Lounge'......... HERE! If anyone hasn't seen the 'KENshiro' video, for a laugh, take a peek!
Enjoy!
-
update: turns out it was very easy to remove, used the corner of my ID to slide it under the little slots above the keyboard and then just gently lifted vertically.
so I'm getting full bars and a stable 300 mbps to my router. from what I know, the 3rd antenna is only necessary for 450 mbps, and MIMO technology. just make sure you hook up antenna one and two again and just ignore the third one. -
I had been doing my research on this laptop for a while and noticed Ken seemed to reply very fast and was very helpful to everyone asking him questions. I personally had excellent service from Gentech as well. They corrected a shipping error for me and had it on the UPS track that same day. -

So, exactly when is it coming!?
It's at night there now isn't it? -

1. Are the temps here in Celsius or Fahrenheit?
2. What was the room temp?
3. Do we still need to activate the TDE button during "stress" tests? Is the TDE Loud? Like a hairdryer?
Thanks. Just cant imagine that a single fan could equal the cooling of a dual fanMSI engineers must really be doing their homework.

2. 72 Fahrenheit
3. It won't matter either way. It is not louder with TDE on. Quiet, and cool at the keyboard.
Yes, MSI did a fine job on this one -

I really want to get the GT780R but I'm not sure what specs to get on it
I don't game often, but I'm looking into getting into it
would the normal 2630QM processor be fine? Or should I be shelling out more to get a better one?
and I don't know which RAM to be getting, I don't want to have a bunch of an extra RAM that I won't need, but I don't want to have too little
and the RAID and the SSD's kind of confuse me
I know how the work sort of. I know SSD's are quicker than HDD's and I know that RAID 0 splits the data between two hard drives so it can be read quicker
would it be faster for me if I had two HDD's or one SSD and one HDD? -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Better to stay with the Intel® i7-2630QM than fall into the Intel® Testosterone™ Trap.
The MSI GT780R comes standard with 16GB DDR3/1333 so there is nothing to upgrade there.
You don't need to use RAID 0 if you are going to get a primary SSD. Just get one big enough for your OS and software, and then use your large 7,200 RPM drive as your D: drive for storage. One SSD is WAY faster than 2 standard HDDs in RAID 0.
GT780R and GT683R already available in GentechPC, Finally!
