Correct me if I'am wrong but yet on our GS60 2PC (with the 860M) it's impossible to underclock/undervolt/overclock/change fan profile/etc.
I'am right?
Svet tools seems working only for 870M and 860M (none Maxwell), but how to check if our chip is a Maxwell version ?
And MSI Afterburner seems definitely not working with core and memory tweaking: it's like you let everything stock even if you move to some 40Mhz+ about Core clock (for example).

The Ghost series does not come with Maxwell GPU's (yet) only Kepler.

I followed the instructions at #1325 and it worked like magic at first. Then to try it out I hibernated and booted the computer. Now after I apply the silent profile fan speed goes very quiet but it's still there. I checked the cpu temps and they are below 60 and checked the silent profile it is configured to be zero below 60. It's
0 60 67 74 81 88 95
0 44 52 61 71 82 91
to be exact. I don't have a tool to monitor fan speeds but I can hear it and it's clearly there. I use CPUID HWmonitor for Cpu temps. Any idea? -
"Yet". Such a tease. I am waiting a month or two before getting the gs60 pro. Hopefully this one
http://http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GS60_2PE_Ghost_Pro_3K_Edition.html#specification
But after reading about the the fan and vbios tweaks done on the FHD pro with the 870m 3gb, how would the 3k version with870m 6gb hold up? Would it be compatible to the gs70 pro 212? In a smaller chassis me thinks not. -
Hi
since the upgrade of the EC firmware16H2EMS1.504.zip, the profile for the GS60 provided in #1325 doesn't work anymore. I chose to apply the silent profile but MSI Dragon center is showing that the fan speed is still > 0 for a temperature of 38°.
Maybe the definition needs to be updated. I think I will make a donation for the tool to make the modification permanent until the next update -
After you put the computer to sleep and then boot back in you have to reapply the fix. Put fan control toggle on your desktop and set the two profiles as stock and silent.
-
thesalmonofdoubt Notebook Enthusiast
I do reapply but it doesn't work. I created a profile with %100 fanspeed all the time and cooled the cpu to below 40C then tried the silent profile it seemed like it worked but I can't be sure since the fridge in my room started creating noise
Msi dragon center is actually showing %0 for me but I definately hear something. Is ıt possible for a laptop to create noise other than fan noise? Also are you sure that it isn't gpu fan that MSI Dragon center shows? -
Yes I'm sure. Before this upgrade, I use the same tool/profile and when MSI displays 0% as fan speed, I can see the temperature reaching 60° and I really hear the difference and can hear the HDD spining.
Now, with the same tool/profile, I can't get 0 rpm and the fan keep the laptop at around 38°C -
thesalmonofdoubt Notebook Enthusiast
Yes I noticed that it is cpu fan, however I can get %0 with it. I guess I don't have the update you mentioned. But still there is noise coming from the computer and I don't use the HDD. Does the HDD spins even though there is 0gb of data on it? Or can there be another source of noise? -
I have some data on the hdd and I'm using it, that's why I can heart it
-
thesalmonofdoubt Notebook Enthusiast
Ok my reason for noise is not HDD cause I configured it to turn off after 1 min and there werre no noise change. I guess electric in the circuits cause some kind of noise. I appriciate if owners can answer the questions below:
1. Do you have any noise with fans completely off?
2. If you have can you describe it? I got two source of noises when fans are off. One of them is like light flow of air through the wents and the other one is like a HDD noise which is irregular and discontinuous like stacatto.(HDD is of btw)
3. When you lift the notebook while it's on and rotate it around the axis where the screen and case met do you have a noise reminding a rotating blade cutting metal?
The noises that I described are low in terms of decibel and doesn't really bother me other than the HDD like noise(because it's irregular). The main reason I'm asking is to learn if there is anything wrong with my machine and is it possible to get rid of them. I would be very glad to hear from the owners.
Thank you -
I dont have much knowledge when it comes to different SSD/HDD capacities on laptops but would I be able to put something like this 'Crucial Real M4 64GB 2.5" SSD SATA III' on the Ghost Pro? Its a spare SSD I have so it would be nice if I could add him to the Ghost and have 128+64 gb
-
This is the -75mV flash I should be using right? I have noticed that you said nVidea's voltage change tool works with this vBios change. Does that mean if theoretically i brought the voltage up +75mV, it would be back to normal technically?
Finally, wouldn't it be possible to change the fan speed by using a profile on MSI afternburner? -
OrangeCoffeeMug Notebook Consultant
Does the Ghost Pro have vents on the bottom of the laptop? If so does anyone know of any good laptop coolers where you can place the fans under the vents?
I think I found an image that shows the vents at the top of the laptop. Just wanted to make sure. -
You can't change fan speed with After burner. If you use Nvidia Inspectors voltage slider you could indeed increase the voltage back to stock if you wish.
I'm pretty sure its the hard drive you can hear. With the fan off the only thing you should be able to hear is the mechanical drive. There is nothing you can do about that other than change to a solid state drive. -
MSI Afterburner Doesn't this show that it has a slider for fan speed? Also, the quote above was the correct undervolt right?
-
The slider will be greyed out.
-
thesalmonofdoubt Notebook Enthusiast
Well first of all thank you very much for your help since the beginning, I appriciate it. I'm convinced that it's the HDD after listening to some HDD noise online. My old laptop was full SSD so I didn't remember the noise
. Also I realized that there is a led indicator to show if the HDD is on. Right now it blinks rarely (didn't check how was it before) and the voice is gone.
But more importantly I have no idea why it was there in the first place because my HDD is fully empty and I don't use it. I believe it will come back if I restart the pc. At least it's nice to know the cause of the problem.
One extra question is: How hot is safe untill the fans have to kick in. I mean during day time it's hotter and the cpu temps passes 60C so fans constantly go on and off. what happens if I stop them until 65C or even 75C? Is it dangerousT? If I understood correctly you undervolt it to deal with this problem. Is this necessary or the only way? Is it easy to switch between the undervolted and fully capable state? -
Yes its very easy. Save the profiles in Intel XTU , go on the profiles section, click "show Values" then load them. It takes all of 15 seconds to go to the program and switch. I'm on silent and underclocked and typing this i'm sitting at 44C.
I just open the laptop up to repaste the CPU and GPU, and then bottled it. There are so many ribbons etc to disconnect and I have no strip down guide. I'm not comfortable with doing it. I'll take it to a decent laptop repair place and get them to do it
.

i have just updated the EC-firmware to version 5.04 and the SCM program doesn't start anymore and i cannot change the power scheme.
is this happened to someone else ?
after a couple of reboot the problem solved itself.
now i have a bigger on
the webcam connect and disconnect continuosly (i can see it in device manager) enabling end disabling it using SCM dosen't help to fix.
If i use skype to test it or the windows app, the image apper and after a second disappear
May it be correlated with EC-firmware update to version 504 moddem for fan speed profile ?

Alright I think I have decided to get the Ghost Pro. Just a couple questions:
1)If I flash the vBios and MSI has a vBios update, would it overwrite the flash?
2)Whats a good thin/light cooling pad for the gs60. -
Yeah it will overwrite it but only if you flash it.
I don't know cool and light but effect and gaudy is the coolmaster notepal x3 -
I think that there is a cool master slim that I may try.
What did you mean, "only if you flash it". So if I do the -75mV flash and msi pushes an update I will have to reflash. -
Am i missing something here? Sounds to me like people are using a non vBios based method of controlling the fans, which program might that be?
Regards -
Another question for the people familiar with Svet´s vBios tool:
While making new fan profiles i noticed that there are multiple profiles for cpu, vga, and some called extended. I assumed that all vga should be the same and all cpu should be the same, but i´m unsure about what to do about the "extended"profiles, can anyone clarify what the translate to in real-world usage?
Regards -
Hi. Been following the thread for a couple of weeks, lotsbof valuable information.
Could some of the owners of the gs60 with the 860m and the 1080 screen give some feedback on the battery life, namely while using image editing software, like Photoshop and ligthroom?
Thanks

And far away
It's my first gaming computer (desktop/laptop) And I love it!
I just saw the post #1325, The silent profile looks great. How do you switch between underclock and normal mode for the CPU? With XTU ? (edit finally got it)mardon likes this. -
thesalmonofdoubt Notebook Enthusiast
Guys can someone give me advise on the cpu temps? What happens if I increase the 0 rpm treshold for the fans to 75C or 80C? Is it safe to have that kind of tempratures constantly? It already reaches those temps while gaming doesn't it, what's the difference?
-
I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure that keeping 0rpm until 75C is not a good idea! if you don't want to hear the fan i suggest you undervolt+underclock + fan silent profile for basic operations. and then set back to normal for gaming.
-
Tonight I've tested the battery and i'm pretty much satisfied...
The battery life is about 3h30/4h with 1 hour watching video on the HDD and 1 hour watching a movie in streaming (wifi)
I used the sentinel -50mV vBIOS (doesn't change since the GPU was not solicited) & XTU -100mV @ 2GHz and silent mode activated half of time.
Once again, thanks to Sen7inel, Mardon and Ti20n for your job and help.mardon likes this. -
Any particular reason for choosing 2GHz? Good balance of performance and heat output? Do you adjust the frequency when you game or do you not notice the difference?
-
I haven't had time to stress test yet but lower than 100mv might be possible at 2ghz for even lower temps and battery use. I'll have a look today.
I'm looking forward to watchdogs!
Backfire, I overclock to the maximum the sliders permit with - 75mV for gaming.
I just figured 2ghz with 8 threads would be plenty for browsing and video watching. Everything is still nice and snappy.
I was using CAD on it all yesterday at the gaming settings and the program flew. Problem is, my work pc will feel very slow now. Next up some Revit, see how it handles a large mechanical, structural and electrical model. -
Just to clarify was this with or without a cooler.
-
deleted...
-
There might have been updates in that firmware, but unfortuately the fan profiles are identical to the factory ones
-
I have something in the works
Though one point of running completely silent that has yet to be discussed is whether or not other components in the cpu area rely on the fan's wake for cooling. MOSFETs come to mind... -

I have never used XTU, do you have 2 profiles set up and just go in an activate the one you need? Is there an easy way to swap or do you have to go in to the tool each time? -
I have the tool opening up at boot and then go into the program and select the profile depending on what im doing.
-
You do have a monitoring tool actually. I would check it's the fan and not the hard drive you're hearing. For fan speed, click 'show hidden icons' on the taskbar, then the 'dragon' icon.
EDIT: After reading further posts you know this already. Something sounds amiss with the EC
Did you try powering off the laptop completely? How about re-flashing? Or resetting the EC via pin hole? -
thesalmonofdoubt Notebook Enthusiast
I tried powering off but not the others. Should they help with my HDD spin? Also Msi dragon centor starts up with the system but I can't disable it from the startup menu in the task manager because it's not there. -
without ofc

Hey guys!
I'm new here but followed this thread since a few weeks. From what I know nobody here already has the 3k version right?
At first I wanted to go for the non pro version but more and more I feel that more information on the screen could have benefits. A touch version of that would be my perect notebook i think.
So if there is someone with some expierience: Could there be problems with some programes that the bars are poorly fit or unreadable cause to small?

Just got the pro.
Is it faster to uninstall the bloat, or do a fresh install ?
First win8 machine, I didnt see a win8 product key on it anywhere ? Did I miss it
thanks in advance, and if question are stupid elementary, my apologies -

There might be a better way to get your win8 serial but this program will scan your computer and give you all your serials for your installed programs.. its really helpful.

It depends what you consider bloat. I thought the only bloat on there is Norton? Some of the msi utilities are really helpful. If there is bloat I usually prefer a clean install so I know it gets everything. -
I just uninstalled what I didn't want and updated Windows and drivers as needed.
Windows Key is embedded in BIOS and automatically read during install.Tyresian likes this. -
From what I understand if you do a refresh Windows 8 will pull the key from the UEFI BIOS stuff.
However with laptops I generally would say it is quicker to just uninstall the bloat and then you don't have to worry about issues installing drivers. I know you SHOULDN'T have issues, but when it comes to laptops and doing clean installed it has caused me headaches in the past. -

Windows 8 no longer includes a printed key like previous version, they did this to try to help again piracy. As be77solo mentioned its embedded in the BIOS and Windows will know where to look once you go to active it.
I would uninstall the bloat you dont want, it will be faster then doing a clean install and having to install the utilities you do want and the drivers you need. -
There's not that much. Winzip and some Norton Stuff.
Hutsady any idea where I can get a maintenance manual or pdf for the Gs60? I want to get it stripped down to add some better TIM.
