Hi, everyone.
I've been shopping for a laptop for a few weeks now. My current one is more than adequate and runs wonderfully, but the intergrated graphics prevents me from doing any respectable gaming. I've transferred to a new college and they highly recommend having a laptop with at least a 2GB dedicated graphics card. How convenient.I'm sure my current one would be fine with the applications I'd run, but this is a good excuse to upgrade under the guise it's for school.
So my requirements are something with 16GB of RAM because you can never have enough. I want a really nice dedicated graphics card, because school you know. It just so happens that some of those darn 2GB video cards are able to play games. I may as well get one that can play games pretty well.
So I need something pretty powerful. Oh and I definitely want a SSD because long boot times have always annoyed the heck out of me.
I've considered some 17" HPs which seem wonderful, but they don't have the greatest graphics cards. Had to eliminate them from consideration. Lenovo and Toshiba make some things that almost fit everything I need, but not quite through lack of SSD, or HDD, or graphics.
For awhile I settled on the Asus ROG G750JX. It has everything I want: RAM, GPU, HDD, SSD, etc, but it is enormous in size and weight and that wouldn't be easy to take back and forth to school.
So I thought, man, I'd love everything that Asus has in a 15" frame. And wouldn't you know this MSI has everything I want at the price point I'm comfortable with.
Looks like I'll be ordering this soon.
I have a couple of questions:
TL;DR start here
How much room is on the 128GB SSD to start with after the OS and other stuff?
How much do you suppose labor would cost to install a second m.2 SSD? I don't want to fiddle with taking out the motherboard and all that?
Could the motherboard support an upgrade in RAM as the price continues to drop and 16GB sticks become more widely available?
-
I've put my music and games data on the D: drive and have 76GB free on the 128 (which has a couple of hidden partitions and is actually 118GB on my GS60 Pro).
You could check with XoticPC or GentechPC, they both sell that upgrade.
Yes, I believe MSI lists the GS60 as supporting up to 32GB RAM.
Good luck with your new machine, I think you're going to like it a lot. -
I had connection persistence problems also until I went into Device Manager and changed the setting on the Intel driver to NOT allow the computer to turn off bluetooth to save power, since then it's been clear sailing with a Logitech BT mouse (M555b). I hope this helps.

I have found that with most bluetooth mice and peripherals do that, a good setting to turn off if you need a device to stay connected.

After comparing features/reviews/blah-blah-blah between the Ghost Pro 3K-095 and the razer blade (2014), I'm definitely going with the Ghost Pro. I decided. And I was like, Yes! Time to buy the damn thing. Popped open newegg and... sold out. Went to amazon and... not listed (Except for the HIDevolution modified builds).
Also not listed on the frys.com website, or bestbuy.
I see the 3k-097 everywhere, but I want the 3k-095. It *seems* like a really popular model with all the reviews/unboxing/forum threads I've seen, but I can't find anywhere to actually *buy* the thing. Is it just a supply/demand issue, or have they stopped making them in order to ramp up the 4K line (I heard something about that happening this fall)? Does anyone have suggestions on B&M stores I can wander into that are probably selling this model?
Thanks! -
For what it sounds like you're doing, 8gb of ram would be easily adequate. Have you ever looked at your ram usage? Unless you're heavy on virtual machines and video rendering, you'll never exceed that amount.

Same mouse, identical problem. I've heard of people with razer orochi mouse with the same issue and for the moment I use a logitech with a dongle.
-
I have a Razer Orochi, and that thing goes though batteries like nobody's business. Maybe two weeks. I love my Logitech Trackball except for the dongle.
-
3k-095 is basically just an upgrade from 128 GB to 256 GB SSD and you can do that at HIDevolution's website. You even get the RAID option for only $2099 which is cheaper than anywhere else i've seen it at.
-
I'm having that problem with the Razer Orochi 2013. It's not a HUGE deal, since it's a really bad wireless mouse (while at the same time being a really good wired one). Will try the fix suggested by tallan when I get home and get back to you.

#2 MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR POWER CORD PLUGGED IN...lol

Maybe optimus is not engaging and he is playing with the integrated GPU?
Maybe even drivers not engaging full clocks? -
Hey guys,
I just received my MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 3K edition today and there seems to be a major problem. Please help me out with this if you can.
I have not run any games yet, but even in normal usage (Web browsing, File Browsing, etc) at full resolution all the fonts are not crisp at all, in fact they appear to be quite blurry. My old 1080p screen looks much better than this. Although, Images in 2880x1620 resolution are looking just fine. But this issue is especially noticeable on webpages such as this one and on certain windows screens.
Is this a scaling issue of some sort? If yes, what is the fix. If no, still what is the fix?
I desperately hope that some others have had this issue as well and that it can be fixed because if it persists than it is a serious deal-breaker. I am getting a head-ache looking at this screen!
Please Help! -

Try adjusting the scaling from 150% to 100%, but the icon/text will look smaller due to high resolution.
Right-click on the desktop, select Screen Resolution and click on Display (Lower left). -
This is exactly why I didn't go 3k. Bigger isn't always better on brand new tech. You'll have to play around with the scaling unfortunately. There are some chrome fixes earlier in this thread. Remember your using something that is usually found on 50" + TVs on a 15" screen. Things are gonna be teeny tineyKevin@GenTechPC likes this.

Yup, that's unfortunately a downside with such high resolution, eye balls are gonna have to work harder. -
I plan on buying the 3K version really soon too. On my desktop I kinda had the same problem, I had a 1080p (23'') monitor and got a better 1440p (27'') one . At first I almost regretted it because the icons and folder were so small I could barely ready what their name was, web pages would have way too much empty space like twitter or facebook where the feed would be small, too much zoom would make it blurry, there would be a lot of white-empty on the sides and images from imgur would occupy only a small portion of the screen making it hard to read/see. Changing the scaling only made it worst, I work a lot for programming and the design of some programs would be totally off with scaling.
Here's how I solved all the problems. When it came to browser I set 125% zoom and Medium sized font and on the system itself I maintained 100% scaling and changed the font size and there u go all problems gone.
I pretend to do this when I buy the 3k in 2 weeks but try it out and let me know how it went. -
Hi everyone,
I got my GS60 870M FHD last friday. Love the machine , the size, weight , screen are good. This is the machine I want.
However , the software side giving me a lot trouble in the beginning. Upon the first start up, I run into multiple issues , before I am able to finish the windows 8.1 initial setup process, I got multiple BSOD from VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR and DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE. After a few try, I still not able to complete the setup process, then I did a windows reset. After the reset, I manage to finish the windows setup before hitting another BSOD. Then I get into the safe mode, installed Nvidia 337.88 driver , after restart, I still get BSOD from the same causes, then I uninstall both Intel and Nvidia driver , and install the lasted beta drivers for both. I also uninstall all the Norton stuff, MSI Reminder, Dragon Gaming Center . After 2 days, now the machine is somewhat stable. Prime95 and 3DMarks are working fine. Normal usage has no problem at all. Wireless connection is fine, clickpad is fine, the noise is minimal during normal usage (compare to my old Envy14) , and the heat seem ok so far.
My current problem is , when the machine wake up from sleep, about 1 out of 4/5 times, the power button stay in amber color (GPU is in use) the screen refuse to turn back on (backlight is on with nothing on the screen), I have to force a hard reset at this point. When the machine is idle for a while, then the screen turn off, once a while, when I wake up the screen by moving the mouse or hit the keyboard, the power button turn amber then a BSOD will appear with VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR. Btw, this all happened when pluggged in, when the machine is running on battery, this happen a lot more often. (1 out of 2/3 times instead or 1 out of 4/5 times)
Now, should I try reinstall the windows 8.1 from scratch ? or I should RMA this one and try my luck with the next one? (btw, the bios , ec and vbios are loaded with the latest version already when I received the machine. )
Thanks -
Just picked up a GS60 860m today from TigerDirect (local brick and mortar) and expected Maxwell.. this effin' thing has Kepler.. What a bunch of garbage, who in their right mind would spend $1650 on a Kepler 860m. Now I have to return it and have them order me something with a Maxwell..
I'm not sure why Kepler is chosen for a thin and light gaming laptop over the obviously more power efficient Maxwell version. Jokes on me, I guess I should have done more research.. nearly "was" the perfect travel gaming laptop until this Nightmare unfolded before my eyes. Definitely wouldn't recommend this notebook to anybody for the kind of money MSI expects for it. -
I'd RMA, there could other issues or damage that you don't know about yet.

Hey guys, I'm new here, but after reading a bit I've come to the conclusion that this would be the best place to ask my question.
I'm stuck between two options: GS60 Ghost Pro 3K-095 vs GT60 Dominator Pro 3K-475
Now the price difference between the two is only $150, so I'm not too concerned about cost. However, I'm not sure which would suit my needs best. I'm looking for a great laptop for gaming, but I will also be quite mobile with this machine. I will need to carry this with me as I will use it for work as well, so it will be transported via briefcase daily. As far as I know (but correct me if I'm wrong), the GS60's 870M is Kepler, and the GT60's 880M is Maxwell. In any normal situation, that might be enough to set my decision completely in stone on the GT60, but mobility is my concern. I've read that the GS series is more of the mobile friendly machine, whereas the GT series is more of a bring to a buddy's house and game, then bring back home type machine. That being said, would carrying the GT60 in a briefcase along with work related material be too much of a hassle as opposed to the GS60?
In addition to the previously stated, if anybody could shed any light on the pros and cons of the two, and your own personal verdict (including, and excluding, my mobile concern) of the two, it would be very much appreciated.
Thank you,
George -
There is no maxwell variant of the 880m. Both are Kepler. If you are going to be taking this around with you everyday, I would go for the gs60 as the gt60 would be a pain to lug around I would think...

Anyone here can confirm the actual of MSI GS60 GHOST'S BOX volumetric weight and the actual weight? , the volumetric weight means the entire BOX (not the laptop) size (length x width x height of course in cm, not inch then divide by 5000). I'm about to forward this laptop, because in my country, this MSI GS60 Ghost laptop is not yet available to purchase.

"Good" to hear that it seems to be a general problem, not limited to my device. Thanks for the input.
Unfortunately I had that already activated. Was no help :-( But this helped a little bit on my old PC. Now I can't even remove that mouse from the device manager - I think I have to reset Windows to get rid of it. I already ordered a new Sensei mouse - I don't want the bluetooth or wireless hassle again and I heard it is great for gaming.
Has somebody sucessfully tried a secure erase of the SSD storage in that device? I can't get partition magic to work, it does not even load (tried multiple settings). Booted my PC in UEFI and CSM mode with secure boot turned off and got to the startup screen of partiton magic (32/64 bit, with or w/o GUI...) but every option I try results in a blank screen. -
16.4 x 59.4 x 37.4
The dimension is quite big since the box came with several accessories: gaming mouse, sleeve, and backpack. -
Did not fix the issue for me. I still get a "Remove failed" message and the mouse still doesn't work via bluetooth on the GS60. It paired just fine with my brother's MacBook Pro.
-
My sculpt comfort mouse now is working pretty nice, just one disconnection in 3 hour basic graphic editing. I've just disabled the power saving setting on bluetooth properties.

Hello guys,
I trying searching and I haven't found anything so I post this here.
I live in Europe and I am interested in GS60 Ghost-003. And 003 specifically since I like the SDD+HDD+16GB combo. The thing is that while I can see that in Amazon.com ( Amazon.com : MSI GS-Series GS60 GHOST-003;9S7-16H212-003 15.6-Inch Laptop : Computers & Accessories ), I cannot find it in amazon.co.uk at all. Is there a reason? Is this 003 not available to EU buyers?
Thanks for your time! -
I've downloaded the latest Vbios for the 806M removed the overclocking restriction, disabled the boost logic (keeps a more consistent boost) and upped the voltage one notch. If you fancy unlocking you're 860m and nipping at the heels of the 870m give this a try and report back your overclocking results

Hey guys,
Has anybody found a fix for these WIFI issues? I bought a Ghost (non pro) about two weeks ago and the WIFI problems are driving me insane. I'm in the room directly next to my wireless router and getting 0.5 Mbps download speeds. My HP Envy is on the same desk getting 5-10 Mbps download speeds! If I sit right next to the router then the problem goes away.
I installed the latest WIFI drivers, but I'm still having this problem. I also bought an external wirless adapter, but that doesn't appear to be helping at all. If I can't get this fixed I'm going to have to return the laptop. I run my business from this thing and can't work effectively without decent wireless.
Thanks for any help.
Allan
P.S. Here is my list of pros and cons about this laptop after using it for a little while now.
Pros: very light, great keyboard (minus the enter key), fast, great looking screen, great performance for games
Cons: worst trackpad I've ever used - hardly usable, miniaturized numberpad, half-sized zero key on numberpad in the wrong place, enter key "crunches" sometimes, painful WIFI connection, fan is a little louder than I'd like at idle (which I've heard there's a fix for), not a fan of the dragon emblem or large bezel -
Hi Everybody,
Last week I bought the 16 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD + 1 TB HD, full hd, GTX870M (the only version available in Italy).
I can confirm:
1 No problems with WiFi. Long games at Diablo 3 while downloading from Steam at 80 mbit/sec. Using latest drivers.
2 I had problems with my bt mouse, I solved them disabling the power saving of the bt controller. Now no problems at all playing Diablo 3 for hours
3 You can fit the notebook in the Tucano Second Skin for Apple MacBook Pro 17". It's perfect. for MacBook Pro/Retina 15" Mendini Molla Second Skin - TucanoUnn0 likes this. -
Anyone got an opinion for me?
GS60 GTX 860M vs 870M. There's a $200 difference and I'm looking at performance/value and heat.
How hot is the 860M Maxwell vs the 870M Kepler? -
They are both kepler

So 870M ftw, 860 shouldn't even be a question?
-
870m is a great performing GPU. You won't regret the extra performance!

UPDATE: I solved my WIFI issue. I'm now getting connection speeds pretty close to that of my HP Envy in most places in my house. The solution:
1. I installed the latest wlan driver. It turns out this isn't listed on the MSI website yet. I called up customer support and they emailed me a link to the latest driver.
2. I changed routers. For some reason the router I was using didn't like the wireless card in this machine.mardon likes this. -
I just tried the silent fan profile provided by ti20n back on page 133 of this thread and it worked like a charm - thank you ti20n! It's great having a pretty much silent machine at idle.
A couple questions on the fan profile:
1. Is there any way to have the fan continue to stay on in until it's say 5 degrees cooler than the cutoff from silent to the first stage? I find that when the temp is just at the cutoff the fan will go on and off pretty frequently. In other words, if the first fan stage is set at 55 degrees and the fan kicks in, can I make it so the fan stays on until it's back down to 50 degrees?
2. This is probably a stupid question, but is there any reason why I can't just set the fan to turn on at 70 degrees instead of 60? I mean if the temp goes up significantly higher when gaming, an additional few degrees shouldn't cause any damage should it? Watching youtube videos and working seems to bring the temp up to about 65 degrees on average so it would be nice if I could have the fans silent for that.
Thanks!

I'd like to know this too. The power brick that comes with it is a beast. It makes me envy apple laptop adaptors. -
Yep, which is why I created my personal fan profile for my machine
Only screams when gaming (75 degrees is the kick in).
-
Sadly, sometimes the issue is the router itself, not the wifi card.

yea, i wish my ghost had an easy problem like just buying a router. sadly i had to rma it in to replace the screen vga wire. hopefully it doesn't have some of these other problems as well. Im starting to wonder if i should have just got a razor. This laptop seems to have a lot of manufacture problems.
-
Hi,
Can anyone help me- roughly how many hours battery are you getting out of this? -
So my I just got a new router and wireless problems already coming (after setting preferred band to 5.2ghz it helped with previous router). I think videos/webpages load fine but when I start any games, connection is horrible. Is it possible for games to have bad connection but everything else working? I have full bars and apparently at 144 mbps.

Hi all, after I have played with my GS60 3K 097 for 6 days so far. Here are some of my thought. Sorry about my English if it not really good.
1/ The screen
Firstly, the Text
The 3K display is a bit pain in the before I update the Window 8 to the newest version. I think right now I'm at Window 8.1 Build 2. Before the update, the scaling is not really good, some programs is not really usable with this such high res screen. But after the update, the scaling work fine now. I'm now using the custom 210% scaling. Now all the text is cripsy now, no more blurry, but some of the programs not work well such as uTorrent, FRAPS. I'm using Firefox to browsing the internet, so far everything is fine with Firefox, except one thing is that youtube player buttons is so so so tiny, It is really difficult to click on it View attachment 113871 as well as choosing the resolution icon.
Secondly, color reproduction
I'm come from a DELL XPS 15 , I don't think that my XPS is good to be honest, but the color accuracy from my DELL XPS is way more better than this 3K display. I'm studying about Photography, so I do editing photos a lot, but the color is really annoying me. So far I can say is 3/4 of the upper part of the screen the color is a bit more richer than the 1/4 part below. My friends said that there is no difference, it is only me who feel that ways, until I compare the same picture on both screens side by side then they can see it.
So what I would say here about the screen is if you don't have the sensitive eye balls ( unlike me ) then this 3K screen is really good after some scaling.
Thirdly, the F$#@!% backlight bleed but luckily It only appear 3 times only, so I don't know much about it yet
2/ Gaming on 3K ( this is the part that i think many people really concern about )
I have tested on Wolfenstein The New Orders, Watch Dogs, Yaiba Ninja Gaiden Z, DMC Devil May Cry, Resident Evil 6, Dota 2 and Metal Gear Rising Revenge.
For Dota 2, I can max out all setting at 2880x1620, the FPS is about 48 to 60, 48 is when both teams clashing and spamming their skills, but during the lanning phase, the FPS is stable at 55 FPS. My lap got repaste for free by GentechPC ( again I really appreciate that GentechPC ^.^) and I have flash mardon 247v2 VBIOS ( thank you mardon for your VBIOS and your Video on Youtube) and undervolt CPU by -75mV, my temp is about 77 to 86 during the game. When I play on Wifi, my ping jump to 300ms at each minute mark, don't know why but this is really annoying, especially during clashing phase, I just wanna smash the screen when the lag happen (>.<). But when I plugged the ethernet cable in ( and 1 important thing is that i must turn off the bandwith controll in Qualcomm Killer Network Manager, or else the Killer LAN is inferior to the crappy Intel Wifi chip ), I can play Dota 2 smoothly. And also after every match, I need to restart DOTA 2 again, because the font in DOTA 2 become unreadable after each match, don't know why, maybe Icefrog did not make DOTA 2 compatible with such high res screen.
For Metal Gear Rising, Resident Evil 6 and DMC Devil May Cry, I got solid 60 FPS everything max out at 2880 x 1620
For Wolfenstein The New Orders, Watch Dogs, the game is only playable in 1920 x 1080, in 2880 x 1620, even at the lowest setting, the FPS is about 24 to 37, so it is not really playable for me ( but I don't know about how you guy would feel at this FPS ^.^, but I prefer minumum 35 FPS to be playable )
For Yaiba Ninja Gaiden Z, I can only run game at 1280 x 720 and only get 40 to 50 FPS lol, for 1920 x 1080 the FPS is between 20 to 27, cannot even reach 30 FPS, and for 2880 x 1620, I get a solid 10 FPS (^.^) haha. But i think the problem is with the graphic card compatible, because my DELL XPS using GT640M can play at 27 to 33 FPS on 1920 x 1080 which is better than my GS60 ( how the hell that crappy GT 640M outperform the mighty beast GTX 870M lol )
3/ Internet Connection
I won't talk much about this part because you guy can find out more about it in the earlier post. So far I'm using a Dlink 868L wifi router and Dlink 865L on Bridge Connection. My Internet Plan is 300Mbps. On wifi I can download from 20 to 25 MB/s, the download is stable, I think the only problem with my Intel wifi card is the Ping when play online game ( like I said above 300ms at every minute mark, but there is no packet loss ). When pluggin via ethernet, the download speed is stable at 29 MB/s, althought I have remove the Bandwith Controll but I cannot get pass 29 MB/s or lower than 29 MB/s. It feel like 29MB/s is a fix number.
4/ Battery
I can watch a whole 1h 50 min movie before my lap shutdown by itself on battery, play one 53 mins Dota 2 match before it shutdown, So far I think the battery is quite good ( my DELL XPS can Play 2 DOTA 2 match before it shutdown by itself, DELL XPS 15 FTW haha, but compare to my friend who play DOTA 2 on his Macbook Pro, he can play 3 matchs each match about 43 mins
5/ Steelseries x Razer
I'm having one problem, I'm using Razer Deathadder Mouse, and the side button, I can use it on window, but in game it is unusable, don't know if the Razer Synapse is conflicting with the Steelseries Engine or not.
So far those are what i feel after 6 days using this GS60 3K-097, it not really meet my expectation, but I'm quite happy about it.
Thank mardon for your VBIOS and GENTECHPC for this GS60 and everybody helpful suggestions when I got problem when I change the default HDD to SAMSUNG 840 EVO 1TB.mardon likes this. -

Thank mardon for your VBIOS and GENTECHPC for this GS60 and everybody helpful suggestions when I got problem when I change the default HDD to SAMSUNG 840 EVO 1TB. -
So I fresh installed Win 8.1.. and used the wifi driver from Intel's website and guess what, no more wifi issues.. I had the same exact problems as everyone else with Wifi.. So that being said, the issue is the Windows build MSI puts on these things.. I have nothing but a perfect connection and consistent speed that never has weird lag spikes, etc. anymore.. So highly recommend those of you with wifi issues just create a recovery USB drive of the stock MSI build and then delete all partitions and do it right with a fresh Windows install and use intel's driver.

Few users had the same issue and they also tried the same thing but not everyone was lucky as you did.
This is probably a compatibility with Intel WLAN card and router if it isn't OS/driver issue. -
Good point, I can see some routers not playing nice but isn't that always a problem with ALL wifi chipsets? There's no perfect Wifi card out there.

So my next confliction is keeping the 860M model or just paying $200ish more for the 870M 1080p model (I dont want the 3K).. I just dont like that it comes with 12gb ram instead of 16gb.. How weird of a build is that, not sure what MSI was thinking that skimping on 4gb and breaking dual channel was the way to go on that particular SKU.
