Please note that barebone model has 1-year warranty unless you purchase extended warranty when compared with MSI branded models with 2-year warranty right out of box (including 1st year as accidental if you register within 30 days of purchase).

Right on, I'm curious about the battery for low-stress tasks such as Word/web and maybe 50% brightness. Typical situation when carrying around campus for basic things

    I don't think there's a whitebook(barebones) version of the GS models.

You can also check out GenTech PC and see the MSI barebones models available at this time.

So I have just purchased the Ghost pro 3k and so far I'm loving it. However I've had a few issues. Not huge but I want to find out if this is normal or not.

When I change between images on the screen I can see the screen making some changes to the contrast or something. It's very subtle but it bugs me. For example if I view a dark image and then alt tab to file explorer, which is almost all white, I can see the screen adjusting. Is this normal? I have heard of some screens doing this (phone sceens etc).

How do I change the keyboard back light colour and make it stay the same colour with out needing to load the steelseries software. I have it set to green. but when i log off or restart, it goes back to red. The first time I changed it, it asked me to log out of windows and back in again. But now it does not.

When I alt tab. there is some SCMII thing. I have no idea what it is or what its doing.

Finally, is there any harm in formatting the drive to install windows 7? Are there files I should backup before doing this?

    Thanks everyone!

Deciding between the Origin version of this and a Gigabyte P25 from xotic. Slightly different choices but not that different and the prices are comparable.
If I could get Diamond IC compound on that Origin to help with the heat and a better trackpad on the Origin I'd go there. If the Gigabyte had better speakers I'd go there. Just a nudge in either direction.

SCM is the control manager for your MSi computer. It allows you to easily turn on/off wifi, change power settings, change screen settings, etc. On GT models I know it can turn off the touchpad and eject your optical drive. It's pretty useful for using to turn off the touchpad on GT models but for GS60, you can use the ELAN driver. You can uninstall it if you want without much consequence.

How many pixels do you have on the screen? Is it like a white cloud or just dots scattered on the screen?

Hello guys , i was thinking to buy a gs60 or gs70 but i always saw that the temperatures is really high...the other option was an sager notebook.
the msi one attracts me because of the light weight...
anyone is having troubles with the msi temperature?

The temperature range still allows the notebook to be used, even though it does have a thermal budget.
    GS60 with 860M = Mayl not reach 93C.
GS60 with 870M = May reach 93C and throttle down to reduce temperature, performance is still better than 860M.
You will not have temperature issues if you go with GT series which is heavier and larger.

The 4710HQ runs really cool in the GS60. I've never hit more than 75C doing benchmarks. But the GPU (870M) does max out at 93C.

Hi, I just bought Lenovo y50 and I am returning it because of the screen issues. I am considering to buy this laptop instead, can you please advise me on the following issues?
    (i7, 860m, FHD screen, 8gb version)

    1. Does adding an m.2 drive void warranty?
    2. Does adding additional memory void warranty? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsF0Bpuj8ss - He says: "Yes, one screw is below the warranty label. In my configuration there is one 8gb unit and one slot is still empty")
    3. Is the keyboard good enough for whole day writing?
    4. Is there any major issues with this laptop (throttling during gaming with the 860m version)?
    5. Is there any problems with the FHD (not 3k) screen (bad colors, automatic brightness adjustment that can't be disabled like on the Lenovo etc.)

Thank you so much for your help!
I am sorry for not reading the whole thread, it's impossible to go through all the 360 pages to read everything here..

It has one of the best screens available in the market, it's superb.
Some guys have automatic brightness problem, perhaps this is Windows 8 issue.

The keyboard is fantastic, even better than my girl friends Mac.
The screen is outstanding really blew me away. Money wasn't a factor and I still went 1080p. The 860m is nicely powerful and you won't need to tweak it to control the temps.

Thanks for the reply, i've liked GS60 and GS70 because of the design and the weight. The problem with the temperature is that i live in Rio de Janeiro, and here in summer temperatures reach 40º Celsius often. So i think that it would be a problem, i have an old dell inspiron that was turning off because of the temperature( i cleaned inside and put an arctic silver).

The GT series i think is really ugly and heavy. I would prefer buy an alienware than GT series...

i'm in doubt now with GS60, SAGER NP8268 and an alienware 14'.

For your DELL, after you cleaned it, is it still shutting down due to overheating? Or no more?
Since the temperature only reaches 40C, it's still lower than 93C, so the notebook will not overheat in that environment. Also, you have to max out the notebook first before it can hit 93C, but it will not go higher than 93C. If you are very concerned with temperature then go with 860M version because the thermal capacity for it is perfect.

Watch this video with any concerns on the 3k. This is what sold me to get the 3k version. I have a standing station and sometimes I am siting and the angles would kill me plus the additional resolution is nice for large documents/coding/remote desktop.

I'm still waiting for mine from my company. Hopefully should arrive soon and I will let you know more.

I advise asking for a careful repaste, and keep your notebook well ventilated with a notebook cooler too. There are numerous things you can do to help with temps too. Here in Mexico we also get very high temps and in such cases even GT60 gets hot, but after repasting, using notebook cooler and changing fan profile, I have very acceptable temps in the 80s max.

Perhaps you can downclock the GPU a little, or undervolt it a tiny bit to ensure lower temps?

Doesn't VRAM only really matter when it comes to resolution? At 1920x1080 I think 2gb is easily enough.

Just saying all maxwells i saw so far were 4GB, all GS60 have 2GB 860 and 3GB870, the new gold still have only 3gb870 but 860 comes with 4gb, would be weird to increase ram for 860 and ignore the 870 :/

I'm following this thread for months now. Have my non pro since 2 moths. Everything is quite ok. Only the quieky space bar is annoying. And the description of the notification LEDs vanish when scratching only a little with you fingernails- while dynaudio and steelseries logo have durable quality... Have some questions:

-Displaymanagement: I use a second 27" display via HDMI. When I plug in and close the notebooks lid i was used to get only one active Screen and notebooks screen was in standby. On this notebook i can still move the mouse to the notebooks screen which is kinda annoying.. is there some option to change that?

-Access time to the 1gb drive sometimes is huge like about 3 seconds. that is super wired sometimes when switching music in the music player. Hints to improve that? Maybe power management option of windows 8.1

-Mardon promissed a guide for lowering vent noises on 860. i looked into it a little but still i do not dare to try it without more help. Please.... =)

Thanks for this sweet forum. Greetz

My laptop is out for repairs still. It got damaged in transit. Should have it back soon and I'll post more regularly again.

I wouldn't use the laptop on an external monitor with the lid closed. It needs it open to draw air in.

Right when I place an order for my pro 3k they run out of stock everywhere in the UK! Unbelievable I have to wait 5-7 weeks for stock apparently, anyone know of where I can get one now? Was looking at Xotic. Pc but the shipping is $400 roughly and over here it already costs around $2600.

I was thinking that using IC Diamond should be great. but i will buy it in canada and i only saw it in Great store like newegg and canada computers... i really love XoticPc, so a good store, nice website should be a very good company. In canada i saw reflexnotebook, but xotic seems really better. But when i simulate the taxes i get really frustrated =/ an amount of CAD 234.00 =/.

i'm in doubt between SAGER NP8268-S and gs60, the sager i'm looking i would build with 880m.
this cooler would help with gs60?

The GS60 has intake grills at the top side (the keyboard side) not at the bottom, so I don't think so it will help much

Hey guys, little short review here. I've recently sold my alienware 17 and picked up the msi gs60 with a 870m. I did this because i was tired of lugging around a 10lb laptop plus all my goodies, So far im IMPRESSED! The form factor is great, the screen looks great, and the noise i've been always reading up on, isn't nearly as bad as some have lead me to believe. Though my alienware could get pretty loud, even while browsing, so maybe I was used to the loud noise coming from the 780m.

As far as gaming, i've only began installing games this week, and I am off this up coming week so i can run some more test if people are interested. Just basic, CS:GO, Diablo 3, hearthstone, Borderlands 2, and Dark souls 2 all run great without a hiccup. The only temp monitoring program i have is the MSI one that came with the laptop, alt tabbing during a serious gaming session after 30 minutes, highest temps I have recorded are 75c on the GPU, and 65 on the CPU. These might not be the most intensive games, but i'm pretty impressed.

I also purchased a coolermaster u2 laptop cooler, and actually haven't even been using the fans, as the intakes are on the top, i guess its kinda pointless anyway but acts as a nice laptop stand. The U2 fans themselves are actually louder then the laptops fans at times. One last thing i did last night while playing the ps4 was did basic browsing while on battery to see how long it would last. Downloaded dota 2, while listening to a podcast and basic forum lurking, the battery lasted over 3 hours, which im comparison to my AW17, its impressive to me lol. Sure its no macbook in terms of build quality and battery life, but the trade off of the price of an apple retina which i've owned, and a heavy gaming monster like AW17, this laptop seems to meet my niche right in the middle of what i'm looking for without the long price tag of a razer notebook.

Believe it or not, i've had less problems with my wifi, on this laptop then on my AW17, it was always spotty and not consistent, here i've alt tabbed out of a game while the temps are rising and went to speedtest.net and constantly get 23mb down, no matter what. My AW would always jump around 12-14, max 18. I'm impressed.

My only con is, THE FINGERPRINTS! lol. I will be buying some clear sheeting ( any ideas or tips appreciated! ) and the sound is sub-par, but thats expected from a laptop, headphones are usually my main audio source anyway.

Like i said guys any questions please feel free to ask and i will try to answer and/or run some games/test for you guys.

    Hi guys!

I'm looking for a new laptop 15,6". And the GS60 makes me want to buy.
But I' wondering if it does not get too hot and if the pc is not too loud at idle.
I hesitate between GS60 and Asus G550JK, what do you recommend me?
    (Sorry for my poor english)

    hey guys,

    firmware 507 just got released

also, could anyone give me some advice to get my gs60 gtx 860 a bit quiter? tried the firmware that was floating around here (i guess it was the 504 version)
but it did not really change anything. i'm still at ~2799 rps on low temperatures. the fan profile.exe isnt working properly since the first update. :(

    cheers

Did you reset the EC with a pin after you flashed it?

yes, well, i used a paper clip and pushed the button, but i wasnt sure if this is really working. pushed it for some seconds, plugged the machine back to AC and started it again. is there any way to see if this was working? (if i remember correctly, i also loaded the optimal settings in the bios afterwards).

some more information:i used Kazoul version - as i was under the impression that my gs60 is not compatible with the version sen7inel (sorry for spelling) posted.

Depending on which custom EC you used the fans would be silent or quieter.

i see, then i'll just retry the flashing process. do you know if i'm safe to use sen7inels version which is for the gtx870? as long as i'm not flashing the vbios, this should work?
    thanks a lot in advance!!
