I'm pretty sure the EC is the same for both models. If you hold on I'll be making a new one based on the new EC when I get my laptop back.

    Hi Guys,

Just got hold of a GS60 ghost (860m) and I am trying to flash the quiet EC firmware. I have flashed it twice and used reset pin but I am still stuck at 2700rpm. any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Ok you guys have make me calm down about the temperature insue...
i'm in doubt about 3k 15' or not 3k, i think the small 15' size doesn't make it a big different, or the 3k display is really better since both in 1080p

and i'm in doubt about GS60 and GS70

    another question
870M is really better than 860M right?how much percent (fps comparison)

I have a big problem. Does anyone of you have huge access-times to the 1TB HDD sometimes. I see every now and then while everyday usage. for when switching music songs: Sometimes superfast and sometimes it says "Opening" for about 3 seconds. The same thing when just opening folders. If nobody of you have that problem i will have to consider sending back... =(

Something pretty common for mechanical drives. They power down and stop spinning if nothing needs accessed for a while in attempt to save power. You can turn this feature off in settings I believe but you'll take a big hit in the battery. If you are continually accessing stuff the drive should stay spinning, but if it's one off things you're accessing with time between then you'll have that spinup time.

A overclocked 860m will be roughly 10 percent slower (using my overclock) than an 870m if the 870m does not throttle. Also a clocked 860m will still produce less heat than an 870m

what notebook cooler do you recommend.
if i don't play games at 3k, or even full hd. just 720p it would be lower then 80 degress? playing in high temperatures is unconfortable for the hands, its not just because the system can reboot....

I have been using the gs60 for a couple of days now. For the most part I love it.
    My two grips are:

idle fan noise. So far I have not been able to reduce it, Can anyone point me to a working profile?
Keyboard layout. The keyboard is great to type on but too far forward and strange key layout.

Lastly, has anyone undervalued the 860m? It runs pretty quiet, and whilst I am playing it rotates between 3200rpm and 4000. Would love to under volt to get it to stay at 3200

Not sure even with an undervolt if it you'll stay under 4k. You'd probably need a custom EC and a vbios.

Yeah, I may buy SVETS tool and give it a try. Also going to open it to add second 8gb ram stick, another SSD and repast.

Marden, have you got yours back yet? Also did you make your custom VBIOS?

Yeah I made a custom bios and a custom EC. I'll have to both again as I needed a new motherboard. Crazy send it off for a simple thing comes back crippled then off again for another two weeks to have new guts! I hope I get a gpu and CPU as good as the last board. They cold take quite low voltage.

Thanks for you answer. I had a Momentus XT 500 GB Hybrid HDD in my last Notebook and NEVER had any problem like that. But it was a bit louder in general so it could be that it was always spinning... I searched alot in the windows energy preferences and turned everything off that said anything about stopping HDD but i still have those huge access-times :(

No please do not worry. My 860m temps are amazing. My fan only ramps up to 4000ish rpm which is quiet for a gaming notebook. I am just trying to get it almost silent by undervolting. There is no issue with temps at all with the 860m

I wouldn't necessarily call those times you mentioned huge, that's about what you'd expect. If you want to get rid of those few seconds lag you'll just need a faster drive.

Has anyone been able to successfully install/use WiDi to an external display with the GS60?

I just bought a WiDi enabled LG Smart TV, but when I try to install the WiDi software in the GS60 (available at: Support for the Intel® Wireless Display (Intel® WiDi)) I get an "Instalation failed" error and a link that claims my laptop does not support Intel WiDi.

I actually just got it to work. It looks like Windows 8.1 handles WiDi differently. I just followed this (much simpler) procedure and got it to work: Support Knowledge Base

There is, however, an annoying delay on the wireless display, but I guess it was to be expected...

    Hi guys, First Post~!

I just received my GS60 this week. It's a GS60-2PC (South Africa), so here are the specs of this model that may differentiate it from the others:

    GPU - GTX860M (2GB)
    RAM: 16GB
    HDD1: 128GB 'Super RAID'
    HDD2: 1TB 7200Rpm

Now, before my purchase, I did plenty of research as to which GPU was either Kepler or Maxwell. According to most threads, this was what I thought to be the general consensus...

    Kepler - The 4GB version
Maxwell - The 2GB version (although some Lenovo Y5070s have 4GB)

So Imagine my surprise when I opened up GPU-Z, to find out that I'm running the GK104 Architecture...

Here is a screenshot of my GPU-z versus the GM107.

    MINE BELOW
    GPUZ GS60.JPG

    TECHPOWERUP's GM107
    GM107.jpg

What I would like to know is, did I really get the bottom of the barrel when it comes to the GTX860m? I was really looking forward to that Maxwell...

From what I've heard, all of the GS model MSI laptops (Stealth and Ghost) with the 860M chip are still using Kepler architecture excluding the recent addition of the GS60 Ghost Limited Gold Edition which might be using Maxwell? Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

Whilst I agree, and listen to people ask over and over again, I have to wonder what nVidia were thinking making two versions of 860m (I realise this is also not the first time they have done this). They should have been 855 and 860 or something to actually differentiate them

Hey everyone, I am experiencing an issue with the Wifi. I can be in a videoconference with Skype without any issue but from time to time I can't manage to load any webpage. I heard this model has some WiFi issues. How did you fix them?

I upgraded the driver to the latest version.
Has anyone tried to change the wifi mini pcie adapter?

the problem is that i was decided to buy a sager pc with 880m, them i saw gs60 and accepted to use 870m, now i think 860m is really underpowered in comparison of 870 and 880 =(

I myself am eager to get one myself....but I have decided to wait for the maxwell card powered laptops.
Imagine the performance of almost the 880m with lower power consumption and cooler temps....970m

860m is still very powerful and overclockable, reaching performance nearly similar to 870m when massively overclocked :D

Look for Seatool and see if you can change acoustic/performance setting on your hard drive to reduce this issue.

Hi guys, I'm looking for a new laptop. I saw the GS60 (not pro) but i wonder if it makes some noise on game, it's obviously, but when we aren't in game ?
    I hesitate between MSI GS60, Lenovo Y50-70 and Asus ROG G550JK ?
Can someone tell me an advise about that choice ?
    (Sorry for my poor english)

The 860m is still a great card. You have to ask yourself what do you really want from the notebook. If all out performance go for the 870m. I wanted a light, slim and quiet notebook so chose the 860m. It has worked out perfectly for me and I am just in the process of fine tuning it (as I am a tweaker at heart). This notebook replaced an Alienware 17 with 770m. The860m is as powerful as my 770m but I do not have to lug around a 2" thick 4+ kg monster around.

GS60 with 860m is out of my budget :(
    I have 1100€ (about 1500$)

G550JK is really bulky ? I've seen that it's just a bit much tick than the Y50
Ans what about the GS60 with 850m noise ? In desktop ? In multimedia ?

If 850M is maxwell card it's really a good deal IMO (need clarification...)
I bet it's more power efficient and has cooler temp

Im looking for som input from other owners here, got a minor yet annoying issue with my GS60 Pro.

When i got it like 5 weeks ago I noticed after a few days that my Enter-key was slightly slightly loose. I want to stress that this is a minor issue 90% of the key works fine, but when pressing the key on the very very right bottom corner of the key its possible to hit an "edge" before the key press is actually registered.

A minor issue as I've mentioned but it felt like annoying issue i didn't want to live with so i decided to send it in for RMA.
Got my laptop back three weeks later with information that they had switched the entire keyboard and the "top chassie". (Thought it was abit strange that the stickers i had removed cleanly wasn't reapplied since the entire top chassie apparantly was switched, but didn't think much of it). The Enter-key felt better, not perfect but better. Now after only a few hours of using the laptop and pressing the Enter-key quite a few times to check it, the loose feeling and the "two-step edge hitting"-click when pressing the bottom right corner is back..

So my question is, have any of you felt that the middle main Enter-key isn't as solid as other keys on the keyboard? Im trying to figure out if they actually didn't do anything with my device or of this is a common issue with this key? Trying to decide if another RMA is worth it..

Any thoughts or input is greatly appriciated!

My enter key is rock solid (which is more than I can say about my spacebar, I am getting lots of missed keystrokes with it. I have to hit it hard and in the middle for it to register)

Yeah, The fans get quite noisy when I play Borderlands 2. I think its acceptable.
In the other hand, I never have problem with the HDD, it runs pretty silent but it gets warm during intensive IO operation.

    edit:
If I could choose, I take the 850M.
