Anyone with a GS60 012(850M) successfully update the bios to 10E that was downloaded fron the US MSI site?

I get this after I point the UEFI Bios Update to the bios file on a fat32 formatted USB flash drive and the notebook reboots

    EFI_Security_Violation Rom Image is Invalid

I tried to update using the "shell" method but the downloaded bios file is missing needed files AfuEfix64.efi,FLASH.NSH and FLASH_ME_NSH

I also tried with secure boot disabled, fast boot disabled and legacy

I've updated lots of notebook and desktop bios but this is my 1st update problem.

Tried 2 different USB flash drives but not on the boot drive main directory.

Do you have the GS60 012?

    BTW,it's a clean install of Windows 8.1 x64 on Crucial M550 M.2 SSD

507? Is that the BIOS or EC version? My BIOS version was 10B before... current EC firmware is called 507...

    Hi,

This is quite old. Maybe you should flash version by version! Try first 104 then 106, 10B and then finally 10E.

    Edit:

I think you have selected the wrong model. Your latest BIOS should be E16H4IMS.107.zip.

Ours all start with E16H2IMS as you can see... your model is named GS60 2PL right?

That must be an error. I cannot even find ghost pl on us page. I think the version is international and you can take the E14H4IMS.107 from the europeam GS60 2PL support page.

On the bottom sticker it lists the model as GS60 2PL-012US

There's also a US MSI support sticker.

    The E14H4IMS.107 worked

I will contact my reseller and get to the bottom of this.

Yes, but why do I have a model that doesn't use the US site bios when it's bought from a authorized MSI US reseller listed as a GS60 012 on their site?

    Bios lists
    GS60 2PL
    MS-16H4
    BIOS Version E16H4IMS.107
    EC Version 16H4EMS1.Ver5.01

For US models these both should be 16H2?

Digging more into this I've found that although the notebook has a US sku it's not supported on the US site for bios and firmware updates.

The newest bios is from August and the newest firmware is from May.

It looks like US MSI kicked 16H4 owners under the bus while 16H2 got new 10E bios and 507 firmware.

So there's 2 different US models of the GS60 with 850M.

There's is absolutely no info on the MSI site and warnings about the different bios and firmware

Nowhere does it mention 16H4 or 16H2

The US website tend to be lacking behind on updates, have informed MSI to update it.
Generally, customers are told by MSI tech support to download from the global site but rarely the US site.

Did the Intel WLAN 6.xx cause WiFi drop-out issue? Or only with 7.xx? Because if it's related to Intel driver, then it's going to be a difficult one for them to resolve.
The GS60 shifted from 16H2 to 16H4 due to hardware revision to support Maxwell GPUs because of different pin-out style.
Since Maxwell IC is smaller than Kepler IC, plus the chipset change, thus explains why the need for model # change.

    GS60 2PC/2PE series (MS-16H2) = latest version is 10E
    Current fix:
    Improve F12 LAN boot function.
    E16H2IMS.10E Download

    GS60 2PM/2PL series (MS-16H4) = latest version is 107
    Current fix:
Update codebase to 36(include intel RC 1.8.0).
    E16H4IMS.107 Download

Let me check with MSI to see if they plan to release any BIOS for 16H4 soon, and if there's any association on the 16H2 107 with Intel WLAN drop-outs.

Hi! Does anyone own an MSI GS60 with a 840m? I would like to know what battery life it has, since it's available in my country for about 1000 dollars. Thanks.

Battery life is subjective to how you use the laptop. Under "everyday use," with a conservative power plan set up, you can expect about three hours. Any applications that place a considerable amount of stress on the hardware, having Wi-Fi on and in use, and having the screen brightness turned up will contribute to a shorter battery life (per cycle).

I don't think the gpu is going to affect your battery life at all unless you actually use it while on battery. And if you use it, you aren't getting 3 hours, that's for sure. More like 1 hour.

It should be longer than that, even (I was looking at the 870M version, mistakenly). But even those reports are up to how you use it, and considering the dedicated graphics chip is not in use under commonplace, non-intensive tasks, the battery life is going to be comparable across a lot of models.

It depends on what the brightness setting is, wireless on or off, use of storage, peripheral device, IGD or PEG, etc.
I am sure you can get to 4 hours with max battery life settings, but average is 3 hours with pleasant settings.

Hi guys. I want to buy a GS60 Ghost (Pro?) with gtx 970M, 1920x1080p, 1x/2x 128GB SSD and preferably with 16GB RAM (if there's such an option since I can only find a 12GB version). Can you point me to the right online shop in the EU? I've been searching for 3 days now and no luck. Wish we had a newegg around here :D. Thx in advance.

You could try eBay, but you should clear it through msi that your warranty would be valid first. Import fees might be steep too...

A US model to look at would be the GS60 Ghost Pro-064. You can always compare prices locally then vs US prices with shipping and duties etc to see which ends up being lower. It has the 970M (6.0GB), 128GB m.2 SSD, 16GB RAM, and of course US keyboard since its a US version.

Hey does anyone know where I can get one more original 150W power supply? I asked MSI already but they only point to local service in Sweden which will for sure charge me a lot. I need it to be shipped either to Sweden or Germany so if someone knows a shop would be great!

So for those who have dared open the GS60 - how difficult is it to swap out the ram and msata ssds? Watched the video, and it looks like the ssd/hdd is easily replaced, but anything under the motherboard is a pain to reach. Debating if it is worth my time/agro to replace the msatas, or just order one with different drives installed.

Also - any thoughts on repasting the GPU and CPU? Does it help the temperatures significantly? Again, as much as I would like to repaste them, I'm not sure how difficult a process it is.

IIRC, the PSU from my Razer Blade (the small one) also fits the GS60, as does the PSU from the W230ss Sager. Sager PSUs are pretty easy to find through a variety of suppliers. The Razer Blade one is a great replacement if size is important

    Hello guys,
I've the usuall wifi drop problem when I'm in game or watching a stream sometimes... I would like to fix this but I'm not sure about the correct thing to do. Let's resume my case :
I've the MSI GS60 2PL-005XFR Ghost, with the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 and the last version of the driver installed (17.0.5.8) (I'm on windows 7 64 bits).
    I followed these steps : http://www.msi.com/pic/faq/10011971@2014-0707-1156-448815@faq0000000001178_eng.pdf.

I read that an update of the EC firmware and the BIOS fix the problem for others but they were speaking for the GS60 2 PC serie (ES 16H2EMS1.507 and Bios E16H2IMS.10E). For the GS60 2PL serie there is no update of the EC firmware (16H4EMS1.501 from 2014-07-17, 'First release') and I don't know if I can fix my problem only with an update of the bios (E16H4IMS109 for me) ?
I never updated a bios before, I don't want to mess up with this new laptop !

    Regards,

I am experiencing the wifi drop out issue. it just came suddenly.

I have the latest version of the driver installed (17.0.5.8)

It seems that I can browse the internet properly. However, When i connect to ORIGIN & STEAM. The connection often drops and disconnects.

I followed @mardon 's tweaking guide: LINK but still not working :(

Anyone knows of a latest fix? Thanks!

What model of router do you have, and did you do firmware update for it? Have you tried Intel WLAN driver 6.x.x instead?

Have you tried it? How about the issue?
