Great thanks. Do you think this upgrade is worth it? I know loadtimes will be better with an ssd, and Im thinking if I buy a samsung evo 500gb, it will be less likely to fail compared to a regular hdd? So speed + reliability is what I am after.

It's an easy upgrade, MUCH MUCH easier than upgrading the M.2 SSD. I did the same and replaced the HDD with a 2.5"SSD (I went with the SanDisk option because I am using it as my OS drive and figured spend a bit more to get top notch performance), but all around, it's a good upgrade if you are willing to spend the cash. SSD's are the future, just a matter of bang for buck at this point.

The 840Evo is a phenomenal drive; I'm using a 1TB in my GS60 (along with a 512 m.2 m550, though I use to have 2x m550 in RAID before), and it's a great bang for the buck. You also get hardware encryption & Rapid Mode (you loose a gig of RAM which then the EVO uses as a cache which in turn roughly doubles the performance).
There is also the new 850 line, but I haven't had a chance to play with them yet. I believe they are very similar in all aspects, even in price.

Just as a heads up, Broadwell-H (aka, the performance chips) are likely cancelled and Intel will skip them and go straight to Skylake (seeing how Broadwell-H has already been delayed over 6 months, it makes sense and since broadwell-h was non-existant on their most recent charts and they were mum on the subject. Also, if skylake is still set to release in second half of 2015, then it probably wouldn't make sense to release broadwell a couple months before......unless of course they decide to do something as unfortunate as releasing broadwell-h in the spring 2015, then non 'h' models of skylake in second half of 2015, and then finally skylake-h in 2016).

Looks like Intel just revealed/released the Broadwell-U line at CES.... I really hope they just skip Broadwell-H and go straight to skylake.

Unfortunately, this did not resolve my issue. I even changed the KeepAlive setting to 6 seconds, yet the problem still persists.

    Hello,

today it was a sad day for my notebook - i spilled beer on my touchpad :( I dont know if it was luck or bad luck but after that "only" my left click and right click key not working. (to be honest the only thing that i hated most was my touchpad on my notebook but i was still better to have a bad one than haveing none one :) ) I bought that notebook in august 2014.
Now i wanted to ask you guys for an advise. What shall i do? Should i contact msi and ask them?

    thanks in advise

    ** UPDATE **

Now it seems, that my notebook is damaged. When i try to boot i get bluescreens.

Do you have accidental warranty coverage? If yes, then you can claim it from MSI, otherwise they will charge you for the repair.

    Hey, guys!
    I have got a problem with my GS60 2PE 3K.
It suddently started to be laggy in usual OS use. Everything openes several secons slower than usual and openes with unloaded visual elements.
I did not get the exact point when it started, but i see i very clear in the process of opening images. It earlier did not take more than half a second to open up images of 2-4 Mb (4000x2200), but now it takes from 2 to 6 seconds. Swithing between images also take the same time, wile earlier it happend near to instantly.
What i have already tested is that it the same thing wheter the files (images) is on the HDD or the SSDs.
Another thing i have tried is to install older graphic drivers, which first seemd to help, everything did start to work quick as earlier again, but the problem appeared again after going into sleeping mode or restarting.
My suspicion now is that it is not the graphic drivers themselvs, but something they implement with.
Any ideas what the problem could be?

    Small update.
I have now once again installed an even older graphic drivers (344.65), with complete delete of all nvidia related files and registry cleanup.
After installing the drivers and physix and rebooting everything was fine for 30 seconds, but then the power button ring blinked from blue to orange two times and the problem took place again.

Does anyone know where we can buy palm rest protectors for the GS60?

The aluminum is a finger print/sweat magnet.

Just Google custom screen protectors. There's plenty of retailers selling those and they'll work just fine. Also, be careful not to double post - it's against the rules

The 1st Realtek HD Audio 74xx series driver is available for download, build 6.0.1.7409

This driver is WHQL but non official.

The installation will require a reboot after the old driver is removed and again after the new is installed

Realtek High Definition Audio (HDA) R2.7x (7409) WHQL

If you use the Realtek HD Audio Manager you may need to reinstall the exe from the Vista64 folder and set it up again

Actually, the more that I think about this issue, the less that I think that it has to do with the HDD. And I'm just going to spitball here, so feel free to steer me back on track.

I'm noticing the lag/stutter problem when doing things like watching a YouTube video, or a video through Facebook, or even just scrolling through a web page; things will stop for a second, and then catch up.
These are all actions that are taking place at the operating system/application(/browser) level, all of which are installed to the SSD (in this case, the m2 drives).

And one might think, ok, that sounds more like a browser issue. But that doesn't explain why I still experience system lags/stutters when playing a game (which is installed on the HDD)...
Also, the fact that it happens in multiple browsers; Firefox and Chrome makes me think that the issue is not limited to the browser level. Sometimes when I'm typing something, like, now for example, I can hear the fans spin up for a quick moment, then what I'm typing on the screen just stops, and then catches up (as the fans wind down).

I'm pretty much noticing that just about any time that I notice a lag/stutter, the fans are whirring up and then down. And I just can't seem to pinpoint anything in the windows task manager showing a spike when this happens.

    Thoughts?

Did you try to restore the system to factory defaults? If it is still occuring after completely loading the OS to factory defaults it could be a hardware issue. Did you try to reflash latest BIOS and EC firmware? Battery reset?

    Hi Guys,

Could I ask a stupid question. Is it possible to disconnect the battery from the laptop and use it only with AC adapter? Just want to protect the battery to make it can last longer. Thanks.

I suppose it would be possible to do so, but I would not recommend it. If your'e going to be using it mostly with AC the battery wont wear very much at all. I've had the same notebook for about 2yrs, 95% of the time its plugged in AC and the battery wear is at 7%.

Plus its good to have it in there in case of sudden power issues, like a UPS for desktops.

Quick question: I understand that if I want to upgrade the M.2 SSD or add a second one, I will have to remove the entire motherboard. But will that mean I will also have to repaste the CPU and GPU again because they will come off with the motherboard? Or am I wrong? I am not too well versed with this, so I'd appreciate any input. Thanks. (I am getting the IC Diamond CPU/GPU upgrade from GentechPC, so I don't intend to repaste the laptop any sooner).

P.S. I was expecting my GS60 064 today but its delayed due to freezing temperatures n snow :( Hopefully I'll get it by tomorrow atleast.

They're all internal batteries so I really doubt it. If you look at some of the videos or pics of the battery, it does not look like you could fit anything larger in there. As far as I know extended batteries are only available for external battery systems.

I think that with the continuing lag/stutter problem that I'm having, a reformat may be in order. But I vaguely recall seeing some issues about reformatting in this thread. A quick search didn't pull up anything relevant though, and I really don't have the time to scour 438 pages for the context that I'm looking for.

Does anyone have insight into the potential issues/gotchas when reformatting this machine?

You will not need to repaste, as they will remain screwed onto the motherboard. I've done an M.2 ssd swap on this laptop like 30 times and it's really not bad, just take your time the first time (there should be a youtube video out there that you can follow along as well).

Thank you for your help! That's good to know :)

I just got my GS60-064!!! First impressions...the packaging is stellar and everything was nicely protected. The added freebies by GentechPC (mouse, mousepad, keyboard skin, TIM upgrade, recovery USB n free game coupons) are icing on the cake. (Although I cant yet find the free Nvidia game coupon and the Elder Scrolls Online coupon, anyone who got the laptop from GentechPC can tell me where these are?) On the invoice it said 12GB RAM which freaked me out for a bit, but going through the PC setting showed that it does actually have 16GB RAM. Coming to the laptop itself, its really slim and way lighter compared to my old Dell Studio XPS 16. The glowing Dragon logo doesn't seem too distracting to me so far. Build Quality is excellent. The SSD is blazing fast and the laptop boots n shuts down so fast compared to my old Dell! The power brick somehow looks much larger in person. I'm not a fan of the keyboard font MSI uses, but I guess I knew that already. The keyboard is great with good travel and the trackpad has nice multitouch gestures, though it feels rather twitchy and erratic. Overall, I'm quite happy with my purchase (though its been only 30 minutes).

PS. I have temporarily disabled Windows Update as I heard updating everything at a time causes some errors. I intend to do 5-10 updates at a time. Can someone tell me best way to set up the laptop and any first time tips/tricks/ pitfalls to avoid? Any issues after device driver updates?

PPS. I'm hating Windows 8 :( Wish I could go back to Windows 7. Also have to remove MSIs bloatware (Thats you, Norton antivirus :/ )

    Hi everyone!
I have GS60 2PC. After fresh Win8.1 install etherything was OK, but after installing SCM one strange device appered in Device Manager. It's USB-device with address Port_#0003.Hub_#0004 and no device description. Device Manager says "Getting device descriptor failed". Does anybody know WHAT is this device and how can i fix it? :)

Seems like USB hub. Can you remove it first and rescan for hardware changes?
Does it have any kind of hardware ID besides Port#?

Rather than download the 7409 Realtek audio drivers there, get them here ( ASUS) if the first link doesn't work and there's an alternative link available.

    Hi Everyone !

It seems that the community around the gs60 is quite active !
It does feel nice for a new owner of this beeautiful thing ! ^^

First I would like to give some personnal reviews and tips about this laptop :

    1) I bought the 2PC-247xfr (basically the french version without OS on it).

    2) I also prepared some other gs60 2PC-248fr for a friend and a client, and this other version (with windows 8.1 this time) seemed to have a different keyboard (less solid with shinier led under it for the windows 8.1 version)... Weird thing...

    3) About this keyboard, what an ugly typefont on it... But it's a pleasure under my fingers so ..!

    4) The new firmware on the touchpad does change everything I think ! I forgot to install it on the gs60 of my friend, and it was really un-precise and weird... On mine, I tried this new firmware thing and it's perfect ! I have to try to install it on my friend's laptop to see if this is the reason of this huge improvement !

    5) You have to use the Sound blaster Cinema 2, it's a game changing piece of software ! The sound is really crappy without it and it also seemed that the computer does'nt use all the speaker without this driver ! It also reduce noise on the mini-jack output !! Amazing, you have to try to start the computer with a speaker at high volume plugged on it, you will ear a major change when the sound blaster program start !

    6) What an ugly shiny logo... It will be under a sticker for me during a year, after the garanty stuff I will try to dismount the screen and DIY something more appealing ! ^^
If you have some video about a project like that, don't hesitate to share !

    7) For those how have a problem with the full page program Steeseries Engine at startup, I would suggest to delete previous driver and reinstall the latest from msi, and if it doesn't work I made this little .bat (linked to this post) file that you will have to put in your steelseries Engine folder, and create a shortcut to place in the startup folder instead of letting the program start by itself. You might also have to activate "start minimize" on the shortcut option of the .bat file !

Download attachment : View attachment mini.txt (Change .txt to .bat)

    8) The only really bad point for me is the noise !
Is there any good solution for calming down this beautiful laptop during "idle/simple browsing" mode ?
I saw something from Kazoul but it was released in May... Maybe a better version came out after this one ? Please share your experience !

Hope my experience will help some new or old owners as well, and I count on you to share your experience on the fan noise stuff !

    Thanks

    Bertrand

    EDIT:
According to MSI, basically they are using PLS panel, but there are also low-end models that use TN panel.
If there's a specific model that you want to find out then best to mention the whole name including sub-model #.

Is there anyway to squeeze some for performace from the 860m? I remeber seeing way back in this thread some modifications for the 870m, but was wondering if anyone has some stable mods for the 860m?

Neither, it is the Samsung PLS - 156HL01-102 screen. "In 2012 Samsung Electronics introduced Super PLS (Plane-to-Line Switching) with the intent of superseding IPS. Samsung adopted PLS panels instead of AMOLED panels, because in the past AMOLED panels had difficulties in realizing full HD resolution on mobile devices. PLS technology was Samsung’s wide-viewing angle LCD technology, similar to LG’s IPS technology.

Samsung claimed the following benefits of Super PLS (commonly referred to as just "PLS") over IPS:

    Further improvement in viewing angle
    10 percent increase in brightness
Up to 15 percent decrease in production costs
    Increased image quality
    Flexible panel"

There's a modified VBIOS that undervolt the GPU and boosts performance.
Additionally, a modified BIOS/EC can also help with overclocking.
For best results, feel free to message Svet directly at MSI forum for custom-made firmware for your system.

    Hi everybody.
I have not been here for a while, but now I have to ask if there is someone that faced the same problem like me.

I have GS60 with 512GB M.2 disk and with 2TB HDD, 8GB RAM running Windows7 64 Ultimate. Normally everything works fine. After some runtime I realise weird problems with playing video files from HDD. The sound is choppy, the picture freezes sometimes. It looks like the HDD is not able to provide uninterruptible data flow. It happens to all videos, even with very poor bitate. CPU utilization is almost nothing, no other huge activities on the disks, files are not fragmented, when trying to copy the video file to other disk - it is immediatelly there (150MB/s transfer rate). So I do not see any obvious reason for such bad video behavior. It is also not linked to video player / codecs.

The only way how to play videos smoothly is to reboot the computer. Then everything works fine. And after some time (around 1 day of runtime, but I am not sure exactly so far) it starts to make problems with palying videos again...

What to check or correct to get rid of it?

    Thank you in advance.

    jardaj,

You are not the only one with this issue.

You can see where we started talking about this from page 432 on.

For me, the problem is not resolved, despite attempting the suggested fixes. I'm planning on reformatting my machine soon (but I've heard that there are problems with doing that as well). = (

Hi everyone, i have my gs 60 since launch and the rubber feet on the bottom have almost all come off. Is there some kind of industrial glue i should use to stick em back for good or will normal super glue do the trick?

I use thin double sided 3M tape. Glue only makes a mess and doesn't work all that well.
