Hi
i didn't back in this thread for like 5 or 6 months, someone can resume the new tips and tweaks to do for having a better cpu/gpu/wifi ? Don't wanna read 300 pages it's too massive
I am not sure but i think i have the modded firmware 505 and sen7inel EC minus75
Thx -
i meant sen7inel vbios*
-
When do you guys think the GS60 will get a bump to a broadwell chip?
-
Broadwell-H hasn't been released yet, and it might never see the light of day and instead might just be replaced with skylake. Eitherway, you'll likely get very small performance improvement with broadwell; the big performance bump would come with Skylake (along with a bunch of extra features).

Nothing would be more exciting than a newly released GPU when compared versus a CPU

I have maybe found the solution for freezing the HDD - the video play problem I have described above.
I have switched off the sata power management In the configuration utility for intel rapid storage technology (IAStorUI.exe). I am not sure that it helped definitelly, but after this change I have not realised the slow-down effect during last few days. Also I am not sure how it is exactly called in english, because the description is translated to my native language. The configuration utility is very simple, I am sure that everyone who would like to try the same will find it easilly.
Enjoy. -
After doing so, I have not noticed any change and the lag/stuttering issue still persists. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Hello,
i have one question - Is there any way to change the msi Touchpad? Maybe Msi has better ones? Or can u recommend me some others? -

Many manufacturers like to flaunt the large Sequential benchmark numbers that are important in about 1% of daily disk access unless your workflow consists of moving large amounts of data on a daily basis. If you move large amounts of data daily a Raid0 array will be of some advantage otherwise a single large capacity SSD is IMO a better option.
Most users of SSDs will have about 80% of their daily disk access consist of small file reads and writes. This can be measured in Microsoft's DiskMon.
So,the 4K numbers at all Q depths is where the attention should be and Raid arrays do not increase the 4K reads and writes.
Here's a single 256GB Crucial M550 M.2 SSD that is the boot drive in use.
The Anvil Storage Utilities benchmark is set to 46% mix of compressed and uncompressible data that is close to what workfows normally use.Attached Files:

This is why i have a 512Gb ssd where the 1tb drive goes one mine....i install all my games there i just use the 256gb raid for OS, and apps and such i do bakup the drive with True image every now and then just in case... but with those speeds to a usb 3.0 external drive is not too long to bother anyways. But i do agree i see very lil to no difference in game load time with raid or single. Though having windows load in about 2 secs is kind of cool....i just think the m2 ssd was cheap enough where i could buy one and raid it witht eh stock one for now...once the 256gb ones become a bit more affordable im sure to buy 2 and do the same....hehehehe

So I just got my 860m 3k back from the RMA and the WiFi issues (reason why I sent it) are still present.. I have 2 other laptops at home that are 4 -5 years old and achieve roughly 9-10mbps on my WiFi when this gs60 only reaches 3-4mbps at best and is usually between 1-2mbps ..
I noticed something on the device manager where the name of the WiFi adapter is the same but has a '#2' at the end .. not sure what it means, a quick search didn't help much since I didn't see anything about it, ill attach a screen shot so u guys can see it
.
I love this PC besides the WiFi issues and I really need it for college and in some classrooms where the WiFi is limited but good enough to browse this laptop just cant do anything.. I cant afford to keep this high priced laptop that cant even get the WiFi to function properly.
Do you guys have any advice on what to do? I think RMA might not work again and I'm not sure if I can get a refund from this issue.. I'm on semester break so that's why I sent it but I cant really afford to not have my laptop when the semester starts.. maybe I could deal with it in the first weeks but that's about it. -
there is only one thing you can do. I am in the same situation with college and had the same issues. Buy an Ac 1525 Killer wireless card from ebay america and replace it yourself. Otherwise your wifi issues persist forever!. Dont buy an ac 7265 ... from intel ... tested it nearly the same **** as the 7260.. No Problems with wifi anymore

WiFi can be a tricky thing if something installed wrong.
If it were me I'd do a Clean Fresh install of the OS,not a restore or clone from a backup image.
Make a USB installation disk using Microsoft's USB/DVD Tool from an original untouched ISO
file.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media
Have driver v17.13.11 ready to be installed after the OS is installed.
Keep WiFi off until install the driver.
Use the 5 ghz band.
I've found no difference in surfing or downloading files between the AC-7260NGW,AC-7265NGW and the Killer N1525 when paired with a Netgear R7000 router on the 5ghz band and channel 161.
The Killer N1525 beats the competition in transferring files across devices connected to the home network by a large margin.Last edited: Jan 31, 2015 -
How hard was it to replace the card? I'm comfortable in changing minor things like ram and storage but I'm afraid I might screw up and then my warranty will be useless.. Also how is it that this intel card is found on most of last year models since its so ****ty or is it a compatibility problem with the gs60?
-
WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
My GS60 had the Intel AC-7260NGW (M.2 type)as the stock wireless card. The problems I had with mine were when resuming from sleep mode.I would have no SSIDs to connect to until a reboot.
I removed the AC-7260NGW which is fairly easy and installed a Killer N1525 after uninstalling the AC-7260NGW and drivers.
The hardest part for me was connecting the tiny MHF4 type antenna wire connectors to the M.2 type wireless card.I used a magnifing headset and tweezers to do it with my old eyes.
I tried an Intel AC-7265NGW for about 10 days that I purchased from Mouser Electronics. It performed well with driver 17.0.6 and 17.13.11.I had no disconnect issues resuming from Sleep Mode.
I did a clean install and put the Killer N1525 back in.
In my experience both Intel and Killer are less than stellar in their Bluetooth connectivity. -
To be honest at this point I just want the wifi to work decently I don't even mind turning the bluetooth off..
Im gonna try those steps you suggested earlier and see what happens even though I dont expect much x) when it came back from RMA yesterday it seemed to be formatted so the only thing I did was install chrome and download the latest drivers and the wifi issue remained.. after that I installed all the windows updates and stuff and nothing..
Currently I'm waiting for and answer from my reseller to see what they can do.. even if they refund me, since I leave in europe, I don't really have much more options when it comes to high end laptops.. and most of the laptops from 2014 come with this goddamn card.. -
WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
Many people working at the RMA repair centers are not trained enough or don't have enough experience. They're probably not paid well also so a big turnover.
A few days ago I had my Internet service turned off by my service provider for not paying my bill....I have automatic bill pay. They apologized after I let them hear my displeasure(x#?/*&%V@!)
Usually a clean fresh install from a USB flash drive created from an untouched ISO will eliminate it being a software issue if tested soon after the clean install.
A Killer N1525 can be had from a few sources including ebay where power notebooks is selling it.Power Notebooks is a very reputable company located in Nevada USA. -
Hi @Spanker15 , which reseller do you have? and how long was the RMA?
-
My reseller is Alientech its from Portugal. Since I didnt sent it directly to MSI and sent it to the reseller and then they sent it to MSI it took from January 14 until January 30 which is pretty good in my opinion.. too bad the issue remained.
-
So I just did all of this and also tried to put Windows 7 there and the issue remained.. after trying so many things its obviously a card problem...
-

Open the bottom and confirmed that both antenna wires are connected to the wireless card?
Bad card is very possible if antennas are connected

Here's my take on GS60 4K (you can call it a review, first impression, etc etc ..... )
I bought one last month, and I'd like to share things that are most likely not covered by the usual reviews.
First, the display, yes I know it's locked at 48Hz but my eyes can't see the difference from a 60Hz display but that's just me. The contrast is not that good, it can't compete with my Samsung Galaxy phone. My biggest gripe is the viewing angle. If you see Xotic's review of the exact same model, GS60 4K-80, the pure horizontal and pure vertical viewing angles are very good, however, seeing it from the top left/top right you can see that the brightness changes quite dramatically, it becomes milky, which is quite disappointing since I expect an IPS 4K to be comparable to Apple's Retina display.
Second, the SSD, again from Xotic's youtube review, the SSD used was a Toshiba 128GB, to my dismay, mine came with a Kingston 128GB. I feel this is quite a bait and switch by msi, use a superior part for a review and swap it with an inferior part for mass production. Even without running any benchmark I know it's inferior since I myself am an SSD firmware engineer and hold a couple patents on it
The write speed is significantly lower, Kington's ~ 300 MB/s vs Toshiba's ~ 400 MB/s. What's the deal with that msi ??!?!?!?
Third, repasting. I asked the reseller to do a thermal repasting using IC Diamond, however, the result was again quite disappointing. I ran firestrike, skydiver and 3dmark 11, the max temperatures were no different from Xotic's stock thermal paste used in their review ...... so either the reseller forgot to repaste or there's no point repasting, on top of that my room was quite cool, around mid 50F
The scores for firestrike, skydiver and 3dmark 11 were a bit lower than those of Xotic's review, no big deal, these scores fluctuate, but why were they lower instead of higher ???!?!? LOL
Finally, I managed to run Dota 2 and Starcraft 2 at max settings and native resolution 3840x2160 with decent fps, around 40 fps. In Starcraft 2, it sometimes stutters when you have massive amount of units on the screen, I think this is more of a CPU limitation.
So all in all, it was OK ... ish ...
That's all folks ..........Last edited: Feb 1, 2015 -
Has anyone successfully installed Linux (Ubuntu/Mint/Kali/Tails) on GS60? Care to share the steps? Thanks
-
I cant seem to OC the video card...I Have the gtx 850m and it wont let me OC with afterburner? Is it locked?
-
Depends on which driver you are running. 345 and earlier series will allow overclocking, 347 will not.
We are still waiting to see what Nvidia does in newer driver releases regarding overclocking. -
Hey thanks very much...had no clue about that
-
Hey, guys! I have some questions and hope someone can help me.
I an using the GS60 ghost pro 2QE( gtx970m), and I have just noticed that in the Realtek HD Audio Manager, there is only Stereo mode for the speakers, but this computer has four 4.1 channel speakers and does it mean that I should be able to use the quadraphonic mode? Is this a problem or the Realtek just cannot detect the in-built speakers? Also in the settings of the Sound Blast Cinema 2, there are only 3 mode choices: stereo, built-in speakers and headphone.
And because of some minor problems, I reinstalled the Sound Blast Cinema 2 from MSI official site. But when I open the app, it seems that it sometimes work and sometimes not (because it sometimes shows the sound wave diagram or just nothing happens when I watching videos or listening to music)By the way, I have already set SBC 2 to open when computer system starts.
Sorry for my English and do hope someone can teach me. Many thanks! -
Installing it is just like windows but you might have to disable secure and fast boot and boot in Legacy mode... You might run into some drivers problems depending on the Linux distribution, for me the one that worked better was Ubuntu.
-
WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
On a clean Windows installation if the Realtek HD Audio driver is downloaded from the MSI download site for your model and installed there will be a drop down menu where Stereo,Quadrophonic,5.1 Speaker or 7.1 Speaker can be selected.
The GS60 is 2.1 Speaker and there's no 2.1 in the menu so 5.1 needs to be selected and then customized.
If a different Realtek HD Audio driver is then installed from other sources there's a chance that that driver will not have a drop down and limit the choice to only Stereo. There's no going back after installing the non MSI driver.
Here's a screenshot with the MSI driver for my GS60 that was downloaded from MSI.It's build 7240
Each of the 2 front speakers and the woofer can be clicked on to test if the sound from it is working.Attached Files:

Don't we have 4 speakers like Dinxuyun pointed out?
Skickat från min AT10LE-A via Tapatalk -
Thanks for the replay. Yeah GS60 has four 4.1 channel speakers and the Realtek is already pre-installed in the system by MSI. But still only stereo mode for me, so is this a normal situation?
-
WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
I don't know how MSI claim of 4.1 is achieved.
I've found one speaker under the right corner of the palm rest and one under the left corner.
There's a tiny sub woofer that's on the hidden side of the mainboard. That adds up to 2.1 in my estimate.
The sound is emitted out the bottom of the notebook and that's not a good thing.
It can be improved using Soundblaster
IMO the speakers are not that good but with quality ear buds or headphones out of the 3.5mm headphone jack the sound is much much better.
I don't use the factory OS installation.I wipe the Crucial 256GB M550 SSD I had installed and do fresh clean installs of Windows 8.1 from a USB flash drive I created.
The clean install and the MSI Realtek HD Audio driver allows a Audio Manager drop down menu with 4 choices. My screenshot above shows my 5.1 selection and tweaks. -
Have you physically seen the subwoofer or seen it accessible in any settings? I have never been able to confirm its existence.
Edit: the other 2 speakers are on the back edge of the mainboard. They are right next to each other. near the centerLast edited: Feb 2, 2015 -
Hi again, guys!
So i had a problem some weeks ago about Windows photo wiver being very slow and laggy.
I had researched the problem before writing here and the solution I found first was in relation to screen color colibration. Unfortunately, the described repairing methods that should have resolved the problem did not help in my case (then I asked for help here). After that I have several times tryed to do different manipulations with the screen calibration profiles, and nothing seemed to help until I deleted all the profiles I could, so I guess that was the (semi)-solution for my problem.
Anyway, the photo wiver is now working the way it should, but the screen colors are tereble! I am using the computer for photo and video editing, and because of the screen I have screwed up several pictures allready.
Can somebody please help me with this issue?
I have not found any solution to my problem on my own. -
Weird. On the manual, it says the grill above the keyboard are speakers also. Along with the ones on the bottom edges. Can you guys not hear sound coming from the grill above the keyboard?
I currently own a lenovo y580 and the JBL speakers are great. Speakers is one of the main attracting points for me on my notebook purchases since I don't use headphones much. The only thing on the GS60 that I am worried about is the speakers. -
What model and screen are you using? Do you own a colorimeter?
-
Sorry, forgot to mention that.
I am using a 2PE machene (870M/3K).
Unfortunately I do not own a colormeter, though you gave me an idea of asking it at my institute. Thanks! -
someone has a video of how to repaste the gpu and cpu ?
i got the model with 870M and i7 4100HQ -
Yeah, if you need accurate colors, you need a colorimeter. The term calibrated is so loosely used by manufacturers. In reality, almost no display is properly calibrated for photo editing.
-
I need quick help from you guys, my reseller to fix my wifi wants me to press F3 to go into system recovery but nothing happens when I do . I have w8.1 that I installed so I dont have the version from MSI anymore, is there anyway I can format my laptop and put it like when it came from msi with all that bloatware and software?
-
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
When you installed 8.1 yourself you may have accidently deleted that recovery partition. If you selected anything like formatting the whole drive, then that most likely happened. If so, then no you can not use it as it is gone.
I know on some previous posts there was talk about replacing the wireless card. If you're up for it you can swap cards in an older system you have and see if that changes anything. -
Yes thats what happened they gave me a link to some drivers and after installing them the problem remained and they then said to do that F3 thing, isnt that the same as the windows 8 troubleshooting option or does msi have a specific software there? And what that does isnt basically format or delete everything not needed? Because the wifi didnt work out of the box I dont see those things fixing it..
The problem with replacing the card is that Im trying to solve the issue without having to void my warranty and also because I might screw smthing up when changing the cardLast edited: Feb 4, 2015 -
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
The F3 function is to do a clean install of the OS and get the computer back to factory settings. This is done by a partition that is on the hard drive and put there by MSI. If you format the whole hard drive you wipe that partition so F3 will no longer work. -
I understand what you are talking about, and you are right.
I think though there is a margin of what calibrated is, in my case I can very clearly see everything is yellowish. I would like to at least calibrate the monitor to show white as white and not as yellow. But how can i do that not using the windows screen calibrator? -
Either use a colorimeter or Intel graphics settings to adjust the colors. There are other 3rd party options to adjust the colors but it does the same stuff as in Intel color settings. If you're really dependent on having the right colors, you should really invest in buying a colorimeter. I bought one 4 years ago and have used it clost to a hundred times. It's totally worth the investment and you can even rent it out in the classifieds if you want to recoup your costs.
-
Oh, great, thanks! I totaly forgot about the Intel display settings!
I will, so far just calibrate it by eye, as good as I can, but of course I should get a colormeter in the future. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You basically need a teardown guide.
Takes you pretty far. -
I started in the 970 thread and slowly realised I would most likely get an 860 model due to price. Knowing that most of these owners have experience with the 860s I wanted to pose my question in here:
At this point I'm pretty convinced between 2 models,
Gold with 16 gb, 4gb 860 and 4710 $1200
Black with 12 gb, 2gb 860 and 4700 $1300
My wife surprisingly doesn't care about the look (Gold vs. Black) but New Egg is claiming the gold is a better deal based on the discount and specs. Does the extra 2gb in the 860 really do anything? Is there any noticeable difference between the 4700 and 4710?
It seems like there's enough of a step up to justify the extra 100 but I'd love to hear the expert opinions in here. Thanks!
