Yes. I turned it off like you see on the video. When I turned it on again just a few seconds after it was back to normal.

It happened completely randomly while playing battlefield 4. I quickly quit the game and the issue persisted onto the windows desktop. the video you see was recorder right after I took the photo I posted above and quit the game.

I'm gonna play a bit more now. If it happens again I'll definetely take it to the store tomorrow.

As I think both aren't necessary I didn't reinstall them upon clean install last time because of that. SteelSeries has a tendency to crash, and can't even remap a key without messing it up. So away with that, KLM does the job of switching backlight colors and patterns. SoundBlaster is more buggy than working, it's a bit unfortunate not to have it because the surround mode did a nice job with games, but Realtek "bare" driver isn't bad at all, many PC boards have only that and do a fine job too... and the annoying pop up is a good riddance. With headphones the sound is perfect with only the Realtek driver, and I'm quite fine with that. Creative drivers are always a bit touchy and messy, nothing new here.

The 180W may not fit, although it's supposed to be ok for all G series.

The 150W, that one is the original, and a safe buy.

THIS LINK has a list of corresponding G series laptops with the 180W. Any newer series is not in. But I guess, if the adapter of an actual GT can fit on a GS, then this one will... If not, then it probably won't.

THIS LINK is MSI own 180W PSU... can't know the model. It's a 3 pins though, and for G Series in general.

BUT... if you look carefully at the product description on Amazon, then you can see this mention : Compatible with P/N: ADP-180EB D, ADP-180HB D, 957-16F21P-104. And the actual model is really ADP-180HB B.

AND... if you look carefully on MSI's website, it says that the 3 pins 180W P/N is : 957-16F21P-104.

I guess one of the resellers here could give a quick call to MSI and sort this out for us? :D

    Hello

I've got a question regarding two cards from this laptop 860m and 870m.
I want to buy Stealth laptop but not sure which card to choose. I was told in shop that 870M has significant temperature issues and always will throttle. So if this is the case no point of paying more money for 870m if it can't run on full capacity with new games...
What are your thoughts on this? has anyone compared performance of Stealth(860m) vs Stealth Pro (870m) ??

One more thing - is a cooling pad useful for this laptop or it doesn't help to much with cooling?

I have a question, I am considering this as well as the Y50. I can get this laptop at 1775 dollars in Europe. Normally it would cost 2500$ so I guess that is a pretty nice deal.

A few things that bug me though is that I can not seem t find replacement parts for the laptop anywhere. I want my laptops to last over 5 years, so I like to replace the battery every 2 years or so to avoid bad battery life. So my first question is, is it possible to replace the battery of this laptop? (As in, is it not soldered/glued into the body of the laptop or non reachable without breaking it?) and do you expect spare parts to be made for this?

Then secondly, I can buy an Y50 with 4K display, 860M at ebay for around 2000 dollars.(transport costs and import costs already added on)

The pros I see are battery life for the GS70 stealth pro which has a bigger battery.
The bigger screen maybe, although the Y50 would be easier to transport which is also a pro.
The 870M gpu which is better. And raid with 2 SSDs
Maybe the build quality of MSI is better and the cooling is better on it than the Y50, that could be a pro?

For the Y50 I see the 4K display as an advantage, they are about the same height.
It has 512 GB SSd and touch(I think for this version, and glossy)

What are your recommendations. How good do you consider teh screen of this laptop?
Also, any cons for the laptops as well that may make you not want to buy it? (both Y50 and this one)

    Thank you,
    Artego

Well guys, just posted this to say I'm on my third GS70 Stealth Pro.
Again, the store gave me a brand new unit. This one also wobbles like my first one but I don't even care about that anymore... I just hope it hasn't got any hardware issues like the previous two.

Now... onto spending half my day again updating drivers, windows, bios and vbios. I just hope it isn't all for nothing again...

Sad to hear when users get constant lemons. The problem may be a single batch and your retailer might have most of that batch. Anyways, what is the wobble you mention?

the important thing is that you end up using your laptop as problem free as possible. Sometimes it may be a hassle but you will benefit in the end when everything is fixed :)

PCDIGA (website pcdiga.com) in Lisbon, Portugal.

    Yeah it sure sucks...
The wobble Imention comes when I set the laptop on a flat surface and open it's screen. The rubber foot on the right side closest to me (beneath the black Intel inside sticker) stays in the air, and if I press or rest my arm in this corner it wobbles. I can easily slide a credit card under it...

So, my third unit isn't problem free... Someone must be laughing at me somewhere I'm sure.
This one also wobbles and I can't understand how a new notebook computer can't even stand straight...
And Intel Rapid Storage Technology is telling me I have some sort of "failed state" on the first drive of my RAID-0 array...

How can I test this further to make sure there is an issue with the mSATA drive?
I think I have an option to ignore this warning. Should I do it?

    *EDIT
-Nevermind, I think. First I repaired Intel Rapid Storage Technology, after rebooting the error was still there so I Marked it as 'Normal state' thru Intel RST and verified it with the same software and it gave out 0 errors so I think it's fine. Still scared me though!

Finally the day has come! I'm gonna buy the GS(...) today... haven't decide yet between the 60 and the 70
Also, I'm a cuda programmer, so it might worth the extra $$ on the 6gb vram... I'll see when I go to the store.

Oh I understand what you mean with wobbling. It sucks but maybe you can do something to fix it? If you have no longer any problems, might as well fix those details to fully enjoy your product :) perhaps a small piece of plastic to act as a bigger leg will stop the wobbling.

And good to hear about the Inter Rapid Storage fix. I know you must feel paranoid about possible issues at this point, so take your time to fully experience everything and fully test it with your usual software/uses.

    Hello guys,

I just got my GS70 and i noticed there is an EC firmware update on msi website, and it says "Update firmware will wipe all data on tablet. MSI strongly recommends that user should prepare a backup before proceeding with firmware upgrade."
1- so first what do they really mean by wiping all data? does it also wipe the windows os?
2- is it worth updating it? does it really affect the system?

    Thanks :)

That's an error, ignore it since updating the EC firmware will not your user data.
It helps with power flow and fan table, etc.

    Bought it! The 870m 3gb 128msata version! I`m happy as :D
First impressions are: this thing is as sexy as Jessica Alba in every movie she did! Its thinnest impressed everyone here at home
Soon I'll post my reviews as a engineering student and casual gamer... One thing I notice in the first five minutes of use: this babe will run very hot while gaming... although I did not game yet, the temperature of the cpu is sufficient to feel the chassis mild~hot in my lap.. maybe it will need a repast.

I try to search for the new EC firmware in the MSI`s but it seems that the download page is not working. Did someone download this drive and recently?

What kind of memory is udes in Stealth?
    Is this one good as second - Kingston :: 8GB 1600MHz CL11 ??
Or should I get something different?

What?? Not sure I understand what you mean. Just follow my link and MSI instruction how to flash it. The download is a zip file with the firmware and necessary data within. You'll have to extract it to the root of a DOS bootable thumbdrive.

    Hey guys!
Has anyone got a fix for the status LEDs at the front? They are crazy bright and I can't even watch a movie in bed without behind blinded by the WiFi status LED...

I tried painting them black with permanent marker but it didn't make a difference. Short of putting black tape over them I don't know what else to do...

On another note, how do i permanentely switch off the adaptive screen brightness? I have it off on all the power schemes, battery or plugged in, and even on the Intel HD graphics drivers but it still makes corrections to the brightness when I'm watching something not plugged in

I think the screen thing has to be through windows registry, or I read something along those lines around here.

As for the leds, yeah why not try the tape haha, the good/bad thing about status leds is the info they give but they are usually an eyesore at night :)

I just received my GS70 Pro and it's met my expectations for the most part!

I found the LEDs annoying as well. I covered them with about 3 inches of vinyl electrical tape. The electrical tape that I have is black and glossy so it doesn't take away from the laptop's aesthetics. I attached the tape only to the side and wrapped under the bottom, keeping the wrist rests clear.
Any black tapes should be fine, but electrical tape doesn't leave adhesive residues and is long-lasting.

I turned off adaptive brightness by doing exactly as you've done. I turned it off in power options as well as in Intel's graphic options. Changing these settings didn't register for me until I rebooted the computer. I didn't need to edit anything in registry.

Now maybe someone has fixes for my problems!

    1) I'm aware that many people have had issues with the trackpad. I downloaded the latest ELAN trackpad driver from the MSI GS70 Pro website and installed it, but still trackpad response is very "jumpy" and "jittery". Particularly, when I use the trackpad to drag the cursor diagonally, the cursor moves in a zig-zag path (moves vertically by about 10 pixels, then horizontally by about 10 pixels).

    2) Is there a way to prevent the keyboard backlight from automatically turning on when I wake the computer from sleep or power it on? I know that the backlight can be toggled via fn + (+) and (-), but I'd prefer to have it off completely.

Also, just out of curiosity, what is the purpose of the black cloth-like material on the rear side of the bottom of the laptop? Is it for comfort when sitting the laptop on the lap, or for some heat dissipation function?

To give people extra grip when carrying the laptop.

Around the 5:20 mark. From last year's GS 70.

When the windows start, right click on the steelseries icon on the taskbar, then settings, there will be a ' "start with windows" or whatever' box

    Ah, go figure, thanks.

I've already disallowed SteelSeries Engine to launch at startup, but even with the program off, the keyboard backlights have a set of default colors ranging from red to pink that can be cycled through using fn + (+)/(-), so the keyboard automatically lights up red upon machine boot up. It would be nice if I could prevent that.

On the same line of thought, is there a way to select the default colors for the keyboard backlights, so that I can turn them on with the keyboard shortcut without having SteelSeries Engine open? i.e. colors other than red to pink.

Anyone had any luck getting pure white on the LEDs? On the GS60 they go ether baby blue, yellow or pink never perfect white

I'm trying that with the LEDs.
Also, when I'm not with the steelseries open, the keyboard has a red backlight as default and there are levels of saturation when pressed fn+(+)/(-), like the GT70 I have. However, when the engine is on, I only have option to turn it on and of, no levels. Anyone else got the same thing? I didn't have time yet, but I'll try to install the driver from the gt70 and see if it works

It's hard to get pure white from a large RGB LEDs. It will always have some hue to it.

All right.... Now I have the laptop for a week, and I'll post my findings here.

First, what a sexy beast! When I was going to buy it I really thought in getting a desktop instead... it would be a hell of a machine for $1900; however, when I got it out of the box, I was sure that I made the right choice... it is so light given that is a 17 screen! I'm carrying it to the lab I work everyday and it doesn't feel like there is a laptop of this size in my bag. Love it!

Second, it does run hot! Really! I thought my 4 yo HP was running very hot, but the GS70 is way hotter when gaming. I only play games in the weekends, so it is kind of OK.

My 3Dmark11 scores: First, after using it for a couple of days without any modification -> P6646
Then, I tried every modded vbios posted here, and even tried creating a custom vbios with the tutorial that ModRQC made, but every time 3Dmark11 was crashing after loading the graphic test #2 :( so I researched a little and found the Nvidia Inspector. What a great app! I only limited the temperature for 80C, no MemOC, and so far it is working. I had no problems running Metro Last Night... playing for 3 hours, the temperature kept steady, and the fps varied between 37 and 45 playing on maximum settings :D
I ran 3Dmark11 again with the temp limiter, and all scores were around P6935

Now the most important part for me: I'm a full time Linux user, and it was really hard to make it run on GS70. After 4 days trying, I finally have everything the way I need to work, with nvidia-prime and Cuda 5.5. I followed some of the tips from gs-linux.blogspot.ca, but they are for Ubuntu 12 and 13. I think I'll post my records here later, of how to get Ubuntu 14.04 working on GS70, and this may apply to other MSI series.

Last thing: I should get the 3xmSatan raid 0! I fully regret not buying the 2PE-211 version at NCIX, for $234 difference (I bought it at CanadaComputers). Now the fee for returning is 10% of the price, and I'll put this money in 2 more 128gb mSata ssd's instead

Backlight on the KB is not dependent on the steel series software. It turns on as soon as the laptop starts... And there's no way getting it to turn off completely, every time you reboot it will light back.

To get the "nearest" white I found using purple at its palest setting gave about what white usually looks like, with a barely noticeable hue.

If 3D Mark crashes you don't have enough voltage to the GPU. You can't just enter any lower value and have it work, you have to fine tune it.

Last but not least, in Metro Last Light with Ultra settings you should be getting about 35 fps average at best. Seeing the way you used Nvidia Inspector to fix a temperature limit, it means that your card is probably throttled down a great deal to prioritize temps, making fps in Metro even lower... You either looked at fps during the beginning while your card was giving full performance, and/or in a part of the game where the memory load is not so intense.

GTX 870M scroll to the bottom and find results for Metro. Your stated fps is fairly possible given that average, but it was probably more punctual than anything else. I'm not saying this to go against your post, just saying that if you were getting a 37-45 fps average steady during 3 hours in Metro with a temp limiter, a single run of 3D Mark would yield a much better result than P69xx. Usually being under P7xxx with a 870M means that the GPU was throttled somehow during the test. Stock I usually get P7090 or around that. With my GPU OC on memory I get P7180, and with both GPU and CPU OCed (well as much as Intel XTU allows to OC) I get around P7300.

I'm glad you like it though! Welcome to the family of happy owners! :)

Can someone please help me out- realistically what kind of battery life are you getting on this laptop (hours)?

I received my Stealth Pro today and I am happy.
I had the regular GS70 from last year while this computer has the same body it seems that the build quality is better this time around.

No more space bar or fan issues.
The bezel around the screen fits better [no flex or creaking].
The keyboard feels stronger if that makes sense [no flex that I can feel].

I don't know if it's all in my head or maybe I got a bad copy last year but this GS70 is better than my last one.

Only issue I have is one dead pixel but I can live with that.

After Dells and HPs and Vaios [all good for me] I am glad I tried MSI.

I see... I don't really mind in not having P7XXX yet. I only tested in max settings to see how far it would go (and because nvidia optimized the game for max settings :D ) The 770m suited me very well, and I think if could underclock/undervolt it to P5XXX to match the 770m it will be fine for now while running reasonable cool (is that possible? There is so much to learn about that!) And in the near future I could 'unleash' the monster as we get games that demand more of the hardware

    Hi Sirs,

    I got mine this week.
Would like to know some tips to battery care.

    From manual:

"The battery pack can be recharged while it is installed in the notebook. Please pay attention to
the following tips before recharging the battery:
    • If a charged battery pack is not available, save your work and close all running programs and shut down the system or Save-to-Disk.
    • Plug in an external AC/DC adapter.
    • You can use the system, suspend system operation or shut down and turn off the system without interrupting the charging process.
    • The battery pack uses Lithium-ion battery cells that have no “memory effect.” It is unnecessary to discharge the battery before recharging. However, to optimize the life of battery, we suggest that consuming the battery power completely once a month is necessary.
    • The actual charging time will be determined by the applications in use."

Is it safe to use the notebook always connected at AC Power and consuming the battery power completely once a month?

    Thanks,

    []s

I wouldn't do it once a month, a full discharge strains the battery more than several partial discharges; perhaps once in 6 months (to keep the battery meter calibrated). My battery is in and laptop always on AC; 14 months and battery is @ 94% condition.

I would just say, use the battery however you like without worrying about the extras.
The battery has 500 charge/discharge cycles so you can have a fully functional battery for at least a year.
Constant unplug/plug will cause the battery to discharge and charge (if it goes below 95%) more and can cause more of this wear/tear on the battery itself.

BTW there's a built in battery calibration with MSI bundled apps. Do this from time to time to ensure better longevity... That's what MSI says at least. Basically it discharges and charge to full again.

Well after reading through a lot of this thread and the ghost thread, as well as considering considering other options (ge series, y50, a few asus models, a brief look into sager), I decided to go with the stealth-037 (860m, 750+128, 12 ram). I thought i'd share how its going.
I've had it for a few days now, and so far i'm vrey happy with it. The screen is nice, if not jaw dropping. The keyboard is great. I love the size and weight, having this much portability in a 17' laptop is a huge plus. The touchpad is, as everyone says, subpar. But not a big deal at all, i'm almost always using a mouse anyway.
As for some of the issues that see to be affecting more than a few people, I haven't experienced them so far. No wifi trouble. No problems with build quality. As of now im glad i went with the 860m model, i'm not sure how well i would've handled the heat issues of the 870. I haven't played anything extremely graphically intensive yet, so we'll see if it becomes an issue down the road, but right now dont need any more than what the 860 puts out. Skyrim on ultra, 50+ mods, some graphically enhancing, and its been running great. 50-60 frames at a pretty cool 75-80C temp range, with an occasional spike up to around 83. CPU didn't get above 75. I played for about 3 hours.
I also bought it when it was on sale on newegg for under 1500, which i think was a really good price for what i got. I'm definitely feeling confident about choosing the stealth over the other options.

If I did not have a microwave, I would reheat my food on this GS70 Pro w/ 870M.

I found the GS70 stealth pro 870m to hot by the time I relay tested the video card it was over 3 weeks old and not returnable at the store. I called up MSI and ask for a RAM to re paste the CPU-GPU all was good then called the store and told them the issue the manager has the same laptop and wondered if his was the same as in very fast hitting 93 degrees in games on the gpu and yes it was he called up MSI and asked to have the RAM for mine to be a refund and they accepted so I was able to get a GT60 same specs but the ssd very nice IPS screen but there was issues with the display as in any window opened not full screen would extend to the bottom in a gosty like extension only at the bottom of the window so one more trip to the store and exchanged it for the GT70 and 880m no ssd super raid but will change that soon ;) and I am loving it I like the GS70 better in terms of look and finish but for gaming and temps it just did not cut it for me. Even with the modded vbios I could not get it stable for my likings. I had high hopes for the GS70 I am sad I had to get rid of it but now with the 880m it's all better.
