I do have this same problem. It always happen when I close the lid and connect this laptop to my TV via HDMI cable.

At first I thought someone hack into my laptop as I see that the mouse move by itself and is not controllable. But after taking a closer look, it seems to only be the case when the lid is close. Unfortunately, I don't have a solution to this problem. Might try to upgrade the touchpad driver first though and see if it helps. If not might have to call the MSI Support team.

    GenTechPC,

What is an acceptable high temperature after pasting with IC Diamond?

I haven't did any extensive gaming since I repasted with IC Diamond, so I would like to know.

What free application could I use that will monitor temps while gaming? Never had to worry with this using my Alienware Laptops in the past, got tired of lugging that beast around, very heavy.

I have latest vbios, bios, and latest Intel and Nvidia drivers installed.

I use my Astro A50s with Xonar U3 to get superb optical sound quality through my headset, beats having to listen to the fans in the background. With the Astro A50s I can't hear the fans at all :).

I love the portability of the laptop, but if I could change one thing about this laptop, I wish it drew air from the bottom instead of the top so that my laptop cooler could help cool it better.

I primarily have been playing Call of Duty Ghosts and Diablo 3, not much else as I don't have time.

The best thing I love about this laptop is how thin it is and does not weigh that much.

I bought an extra year warranty just in case though.

I wish we had a thread for this laptop which links to all the latest drivers, bios, and tweaks all in one area to be able to find them much easier.

If anyone is interested in repasting, I can tell you to use screenshots from either a phone or tablet so that you can remember where and how long the screws were when you removed them as well as cable connectors.

Has anybody been able to find the Stealth with the glossy screen? I've ordered one from XoticPC (because they advertise them ) but got the call today that they don't have them and no ETA of when they will. They recommended I go with the 72% NTSC Color Gamut matte screen. Already returned one Stealth because I REALLY disliked the matte screen. Is there a big difference between the "regular" matte screen and the 72% NTSC Color Gamut screen?

Hey guys I am looking to get my first gaming laptop and have a budget of about 2000-2500. My only real requirements are a backlit keyboard and awesome performance. So far I have been researching and have come up with the Aorus X7v2 or the MSI GS70 Stealth 212. Now I am open to other suggestions but these are the two that have really caught my eye. I have been leaning a bit more towards the MSI since it does not use sli (i hear sli can be a real pain with some games and i want laptop to always be at its peak performance) and also the back light on the keyboard is customizable (vanity i know, but it just looks cool). I also looked at the MSI GT72 dominator pro 010 but that is pushing the budget at 2500, is the increase in performance over the GS70 worth it?

I play mostly FFXIV and play it for 4-5 hours at a time (yes i have a desktop, yes i know desktops are better for games) and i also play other games from time to time (GTA4, StarCitizen, Arma 2, Saints row 3&4, Grid 2, Dirt 3) so i do like new games and want to keep being able to play upcomming games at 60fps on highest settings.

any input is greatly appreciated. I have until september 1st to make my decision.

    Hey,

I've just ordered a GS70-2PEi71631 V2. I've heard of serious throttling issues by default with that particular GPU in this thread.

I've got experience in repasting my old Alienware m15x, which is pretty much a breeze - how hard is it with the GS70? Do I have to follow the whole take-out-the-mainboard-part that I've seen in the following disassembly video to get to the GPU/CPU heatsinks?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYnmuTlJ-PI

Also: Is the default partition layout of the SSD RAID0 setup GPT or MBR? (as I want to use full disk encryption software)

    Thank you in advance!

With stock paste is around 89C and you should getting around 85C with IC Diamond.

You can download HWMonitor to monitor the temperature and it's free:

HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

GS70 is slim light weight design so can't compare it to Alienware.

    Hi Panni,

I did the repaste in about an 1.5 hours and I was taking my time with everything to ensure no static electricity occurred and took pictures on my iPad as I went of all screw placements and cable connectors to ensure I did not forget a cable connection. It was pretty easy, but you do have to take out the motherboard because the CPU and GPU are on the other side when you take off the back cover, a lot of screws and a lot of cable connectors. There is a guide here that will help you:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/753668-gs70-stealth-pro-disassembly.html

I have a question for GenTechPC when you repaste the MSI GS70 Stealth Pro did you also replace the thermal pads and not just repaste the CPU and GPU?

    Thanks for the reply GenTechPC.

    GenTechPC,

I just played Sniper 3 Elite, and HWMonitor shows a maximum temp of 93C, which is the highest temp.

I have latest vbios, latest Nvidia Drivers, and latest bios, so not sure if my repaste is adequate.

I like to see some tests done by others who have repasted with IC Diamond, before I repaste again?

I haven't test it with games. maybe you can try just run 3DMark11 to see what temperatures you are getting.

Generally games makes GPU hotter than 3DMark.

You need to do an advanced restart and then press the key on start up to enter the bios.

I've had my stealth pro since april.

I have repasted both gpu and cpu with cool laboratory liquid ultra. I play all the latest games including wolfestein new order, watchdogs, tomb raider, call of duty ghosts, and crisis 3 etc.

Whichever game you play the temps will eventually hit 93 degrees (repaste only increases the time it takes)

When you hit 93 degrees the gpu starts to switch between full and half speed. After about 2 or 3 minutes it reduces the gpu clock speed and the temps drop back to about 90 degrees. After further play this process happens again and drops even further.

In a nutshell you will lose about 5 to 10 fps as a result (sometimes a little more depending on game and load)

The latest gaming center update also included a hybrid power section.

When this is in operation your laptop will squeeze every ounce of power out of the gpu and cpu hence the throttling issue.

I have had a couple of instances where I have started a game on battery power rather than mains and then plugged the power lead in. The game clock rates have switched between late 700's and early 900's clock rates. The temps on my machine never went above 86 to 88 degrees.

I believe it is the hybrid power which is the main cause of the over heating and has been designed as such.

My laptop has run at 93 degrees for hours on end without any damage/issues.

Has anyone else come across the glitch with the hybrid power?

The temperature is cap at 93C just like GS60 series to prevent overheating. MSI had to do this because both GS70 and GS60 are thin laptops and does not have enough room or bigger heatsink like on their GT series for better cooling.

sure JJ I will let you know what I decide. Right now I am leaning more towards the GS70, but the heat and throttling issues kind of scare me. I do not mind repasting it but temps will still max out even with new paste so I have been looking at others that are fatter forms.

I would lean towards the upper end of the new MSI laptops that have better cooling if you have the money.

If I had known the cooling issues with this laptop I would have steered away, why buy a gaming laptop if you have to deal with throttling.

Asus, Alienware, and MSI have better cooling laptops but also a lot more heavier.

If you are a heavy gamer, I would lean towards the new MSI laptop with the 880m graphic cards.

If you play once in awhile and only a few hours this laptop GS70 Stealth Pro may be a good fit for you.

I repasted and my temps still get up to 93c when playing Ghosts or any FPS games I play.

This laptop is great for portability and for light gaming so depends on what you are looking for and your budget.

    GT - Heavy
    GE - Mid
    GS - Ultra portable/Mid

Where exactly can I find that vBIOS by svet on the MSI forums that you talked about? Tried searching for it, no luck.

Everyone else: Have you figured out your temperature problems? Even after the current vBIOS/EC update? I'm hitting 93°C with unigine heaven. (Not repasted though, machine is three days old)
Are there any sane voltage/clock values I can use, and do you all use svets vBIOS mod tool?

ok, now i have my 3rd major problem in about 1-2 months. that really sucks.
first i had to flash vbios otherwise i got a driver crash after a few seconds with any 3D object, that my mainboard went to hell within 1 month and now this:
when i play e.g. dota or smite and a big lightning effect fills the whole screen the game freezes. sound continues to play. i did not observe this before the mainboard issue, so maybe it is a new nvidia driver that is responsible? i will test an old driver soon. do you guys have any ideas what this problem is?

What does that allow me to do? I mean if can't test the vBIOS on my machine, how is he supposed to set the correct parameters to prevent throttling? Or does he unlock the vBIOS for external changes (like the voltage)?

Normally, you are going to get his software at minimum to make modification yourself.
As far as testing VBIOS on your machine, he can do all that, but depends on him.

Reboot the system, and press DEL to enter BIOS, then see if you can change brightness in the BIOS.
If it works in BIOS, then make sure that your PC has SCM installed and activated.
    Download SCM

Do an EC reset by disconnecting the AC adapter and battery for 10 seconds, then reconnect and retest.
Can you also post System Information picture under BIOS?

played WoW at max settings which will get the gpu temp up to 93 in less than 2 mins. It did exactly as he said, goes to 90C then clocks down 100mhz which is perfect to never go above 91. so no major throttling.

I can state the fix using the NVidia Inspector works, no more throttling and no more 93C temps, highest I got was 86C.

I did repaste with IC diamond as well. :)

I will try this when I get my gs60 back. I found upping the GPU fan to 100% past 82c with a custom EC, my custom vbios and a repaste and I've got no more throttling issues. This is with a notepal x3 cooling mat also. I'm thinking of getting some new thermal pads for the ram as well.

I don't know the exact time or day that this happened, mostly just games, no drivers or anything.
