Found a link on msi website that explained the 3 modes. Green no turbo boost for cpu or GPU, comfort will allow cpu to turbo boost and sport allows cpu, GPU and fans to boost. I guess will go home and run benchmarks with all three and most likely stick to Green so it's quiet. When gaming can change to sport.

Any advice on what Anti Virus to run, Avast caused me issues so any recommendations?

I use Webroot. It requires very little resources from the machine, and performs well. (I keep a yearly subscription for it because I don't trust free products where security in one+ areas may be lacking.)

Hi there everyone, I am set on getting the GS70 soon but I have few questions here and appreciate if someone can chime on those.

1- Does anyone know if any retailers will add 120hz screens as an option to the GS70? or.. are there any available that I can buy and install on this laptop..? I know that this will void the warranty, but to me the 120hz is worth the risk.

2- This one if for the tech guys here.. Since the case is made of aluminum, if one conducts between the CPU/GPU heat pipes and the perforated aluminum case by means of copper shims and thermal tape, couldn't that work it's wonders in lowering temps by a good few degrees? I personally don't care if the area around the power switch gets hot as I wont touch it anyway.. ( BTW, I don't want cooling pads )

3- Did any one try to overclock their 970ms', assuming thermal conditions are suitable, how much can we juice out of this chip; like is 10% more performance possible?

Anyone have the 970m 6gb yet? If so, what do you think of it? Would you buy it again if you had a chance to pick something else?

Can any owner take a picture of their AC adapter and the tip?

Is air drawn on from the top and released from the back, sides and bottom?

Guys. I'm going to buy the 6gb vram through XoticPC but the weird thing is MSI selling 128gb SSD version for 1900$ and 256gb for 2300$. But i can add another 128gb SSD to the 128gb stock with 75$ at Customize. It makes no sense. Should i do it or buy with stock 256gb?
And is it true GS70 use reverse fan setup: take in air on top and release through bottom/side. If so then i shoudn't use a cooling pad right?
    Thanks ahead!

I've got an answer for your first question. Unfortunately there are no 120hz screens in production for this model, nor are there are any plans to make one. This made me kinda sad at first, but most of my games on high/ultra will max out at 60fps w/ the 970m so I don't (technically) have a reason to utilize it, except for the fact that I want it. :p

The $2300 version will be set up in Raid 0. If customizing offers a second m.sata ssd for $75 and XoticPC sets the two m.sata ssd's in Raid 0, you'd certainly be saving some coin from the stock 2x128gb model. I'd give XoticPC a call to check on that. In regards to the cooling, the unit pulls air through the top, and vents it out the bottom as well as the sides at a 45 degree angle. A cooling pad will still help, however. :)

To anyone who owns a GS 70, how is the trackpad? I've heard terrible things about the one on the GS 60. Is the GS 70 any better in this regard?

I've heard/read horrible things about the track pad too .. but I've had nothing but good experiences with the GS70 track pad. Works just fine. No problems. I don't use it much but when I have to, it is just fine.

About power management, Found descriptions for shift modes in MSI's website, here's the link:

    https://dragoonarmy.msi.com/home/info/labs/detail/309

    tl;dr:

While browsing and watching videos my GS70 manages to stay completely quiet, both fans not spinning at all. It can get really loud while gaming in Sports mode but that's to be expected so no complains there. Also, Sports mode is not even really that necessary for some games from what I've seen. I've been playing Crysis 2 on Extreme graphics setting on Green mode and it still manages 40+ fps while keeping more than reasonable noise levels. Recent games will be more demanding I guess but haven't had the chance to test yet.

So far I have to say I'm more than pleased with it.

Hi Guys! I'm going back and forth too about what to buy!! Please help me,

    1) Is there by any chance a GS70 Silver with 970m 6gb? Im in US
    2) How hot does this get without a cooling pad or non stock thermal coumpound?
    3) How good and crisp is the matte screen?

Edit: Would love if Gentech or Xotic can answer the first question

Don't know about the first but I can help with the other two.
It gets QUITE hot. Specially in the summer. If you plan on gaming for more than 2 or 3 hours at a time I suggest getting a nice cooling pad because the chassis can get warm and uncomfortable for the hands.
The matte screen is very good for what it is. A nice Matte TN panel.

Anyone getting unusual fan whirr sounds from the GPU fan? My laptop is 4 months old and it's sounding weird. Should I take it apart and check for dirt or send it in for warranty?

I'm curious about this too. Besides having small fans on top how else can you cool this laptop?

Does the 150w AC adapter provide enough power to OC both the CPU & GPU? Or should I look for a 180w - 200w if I was interested in OC'N?

    Hi all,

for the GS70 owners in Europe from where did you buy your laptop. Currently live in Austria but the price difference in comparison to say Poland is close to 400Eur. In AT the bare minimum 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD with no SSD costs 1500Eur, the model with 16GB RAM and 256*2 SSD goes for 2000Eur. Other versions are not available.
The version that actually suits my needs much better is 16GB and 128*2 SSD and goes for 1550Eur in Poland. So quite a significant difference.
I was wondering if anyone has had experience with Polish internet shops and which ones to look at and which ones to stay clear from.
Other suggestions would also be very welcome with price point of up to 1600Eur and in Czech Republic around Brno or Slovakia in Bratislava, with self pick-up possibilities would be even more appreciated.
Maybe I am old fashioned but would be feeling more confident of being able to pick up my own quite expensive piece of HW and checking it immediately for possible flaws than having it cross-border shipped and then having to go through the pain of customer support if I should get a lemon.

Cheers and thanks for suggestions in advance,

The air is coming out the sides and are arranged to blow air at 45degrees in the direction of the back and NOT the bottom. There are small intake grilles on the bottom aimed at non-active heat dissipation as well and some components which do add up to the total thermal load are also on the bottom. So a thermal pad will not deliver huge gains but will however add up to somewhat lower overall temperatures. Maybe some of the owners can post if they see visible results on the CPU and GPU side, but what would probably be definitely affected are the HDD/SSD as well as wireless cards and these do run warm and do add to the total load of the cooling system and temps.

The vents are on the sides to the rear of the laptop and are facing at 45degrees to the back so the air is pushed more behind the laptop - as much as possible away from you. With the way the monitor is positioned there seems to also be vents on the lower part of the rear panel - kind of half he size the ones on the back (they can be seen in the 360 view of the laptop in Xoticpc). Will also edit my post

I see what you mean, looks like I might be able to use my CoolerMaster NotePal U3 with modded fans and fan controller after all with the GS70.

Has anyone with the new 970m done the repaste with IC Diamond and report their temps? I'm still deciding if I want them (XoticPC, GentechPC or HIDevolution) to do it or I go with Amazon due to getting it way faster with Amazon Prime.

XoticPC actually in their 360 view have the GS60 and not GS70... (now I did my research :p) so the fans on GS70 go only to the sides... Anyway I love the CoolerMaster with any laptop as it really lets it sit on the lap and know that you are doing all you can to keep it cool ;) as well as your legs. Also you are protected against any odd placement like on a blanket and like I mentioned in my previous post I guess it would still positively contribute to the overal temps.

    For re-pasting.
My reasoning (correct me if I am wrong) is that when they do the re-paste they will also have to check if they did a good job and will have to run some test, so apart from having cooler temps (some wrote up to 10degrees) you also get a initial stress check-up before shipping, where I would think any apparent flaws would be dealt with or you would get another unit... So if I had the choice for this in Europe for 35USD I would definately do it, especially on the 6GB VRAM GTX970.

Did you or anyone else buy from them? Any experience with afterservice?
Config a bit poor... with only 8GB and just one 128 SSD, not too much win over the one available in AT. 80Eur will buy me an SSD in Austria, just will have to install it myself...

Well they just started to ship outside the countries Slovakia and Czech Republic so I do not really know what is their afterservice outside my country :) Anyways you have 14 days to return the laptop if you dont like it...
From my experience as I am living in Slovakia, there are no problems with them and also they care about their customers :) I've already ordered several items from them without any problems.

The question is how portable it has to be? Gygabite x35 v3 and Clevo are the only options in similar weight and thickness with gtx980m but they only come in 15Inch flavor... the 17inch ones are heavier and thicker. Plus at least from the pictures it does seem that MSI managed to put in some value add extras that come in at about the same price (aluminium hand rest and cover, best keyboard, killer LAN/WLAN combo, very decent screen).
I tend to lean towards the 17inch for gaming as the extra screen size does make gaming a more enjoyable experience for me and if it still fits in most bigger 15inch backpacs or bags in terms of transportation it's the same for me...

Do they have pick-up possibilities or physical store in Bratislava? I am in Vienna so 80km drive with some shoping on the way :)... still like the MSI GS70 2QE-005XPL, PL Preisvergleich | Geizhals EU variant more because of the extra RAM and SSD, the only question if it is really true and tried. Adding RAM means disassembling the full laptop and that is a bit too much tinkering for my likeing. Also do like the RAID 0 option and probably it won't be easy to get the exactly same SSD as installed, plus then the Win re-install.
-Man I am getting lazy with age :D

Hey guys, I just bought an MSI GS70 2QE (Stealth Pro)-099US.

    My question is:

Is it possible to wipe this and put windows 7 on it(came with windows 8, and for work reasons I need 7), and if so, are there any special things I need to do to make that work?

    Thanks in advance

I would keep windows 8 and install a classic she'll to bring back start button and menu. That way you still ha e access to the start screen and other windows 8 features should you want to use them.

I must agree that the GS70 despite being a 17" machine, it does seem more like 15". I didn't look for the Clevo. How does it compare to P35X in term of heat?

970m 3gb. If I get the chance tonight I will put up some benchmarks and temps. But from I played yesterday it was fluid and looked ever so sweet.
