Throttling should not be an issue, no.

    Hi!
Currently I'm working on project to turn k3100m/k4100M into k5100m/GTX 880m without hardware mod and I'll be very appreciative if you help with some stuff [IMG] I'm looking for people with gtx 780/870/880 or quadro K3/4/5100M. All you need to do:

    1. Download GPU-Z and save the vBIOS.
    2. Download RWEverything, in top corner select "Access-->PCI". Then windows should appear - select device called "nVidia Corporation VGA Controller". After, save the info to binary with Shift+F2 combination.
    3. Share this two files with me [IMG]

    Best Regards,
    Valentine.

Had the chance to play with the new GS70 (006) for one minute, I quickly tried some gestures on the trackpad but wasn't able to do any right-click without actually using that button. Don't know, maybe that one was not configured for such, haven't had time to check the settings.
So I'm asking: is there any right-click gesture option in that trackpad software that comes with GS70?
(I'm asking cause I have this cheap HP from my office and it has 2-finger tap for right-click, I never have to click any of those 2 buttons)

    Hi guys,

Just got my GS70 2QE a few weeks ago.

    Specs : i7 4720, 8gb ram, gtx 970m, 128gb ssd, 1tb hdd etc

It seems to run like **** and I'm not sure if it's a bios problem, all my drivers seem to be up to date. Is this common?

Temps run around 80-85 degrees in game.

My fps on cs go is abysmal...I used to get better on a hd 6870. It's currently around (100-130 fps solid)

Although my fps on black ops 3 max settings is 100+ and on SW : battlefront it's smooth as hell even on max settings.

So your CS fps is (100-130)? If so, that is perfectly acceptable.

And what temps are those? CPU or GPU?

GPU idling at 40 and around 70ish on load.

Cpu idles around 60 and up to 85-90 on load

I suggest looking at graphs over a period of gameplay of CPU and GPU stats and looking for any issues.

Oh. I didn't realise getting such poor fps on cs go was the norm when it's not a highly graphical or visually pleasing game. That's essentially my point.

Also, I've had issues with running things on second monitor, for some reason my fps seems to drop to almost unplayable levels on the laptop screen; this happens when I run a youtube vid or have something open on the 2nd monitor. I have a feeling it's a windows 10 issue, as I recall it wasn't a problem when I was on Windows 8 for a short time.

Anyone else had this problem with theirs?

Your CPU idle temp is a little on the high side, but otherwise the temps are within reason; I don't think you have thermal throttling going on. Have you tried any other iGPU/dGPU drivers? Checked CPU and GPU utilization?

Define "unplayable levels." Driving a second monitor does add stress to the workload, so a performance hit isn't uncommon. Not sure of how much of an impact it's making on you is all.

Yeah. I'm sure there's no thermal throttling but I was just unsure whether that kind of fps was normal for such an old game.

So when I say unplayable my fps drops from 130+ to around 40 when something is running on the second screen.

Ouch! That seems like a bit much. Try updating or reinstalling your current drivers for the Intel graphics and the NVidia graphics, and when you can, check your utilization when running CS next time.

I haven't tried using an external monitor with mine so I'm not sure what to do. But I would check settings to ensure that both monitors are utilizing the Nvidia GPU.

Question: is it even possible to use intel graphics for one monitor and Nvidia graphics for a second monitor?

As far as I'm aware: No. Whether the Intel graphics drives the displays or they're routed to the dGPU, I've never seen the option to mix which displays are driven by which GPU on any laptop.

Just a quick question guys, I'm thinking of getting a 144hz monitor for whilst I'm stationary. Is it possible to run through the GS70?

As far as I'm aware, I can't get 144hz through an HDMI but it's possible through Mini DP.

    Anyone had any experience?

There's no driver needed for the webcam, but you may possibly have a defective camera.

I have been a very happy owner of the silver edition but since last week I have an issue with my GS70. When I startup I get a blue screen after a few minutes, Disk error. After this the system doesn't boot to windows but into the bios or with an error no OS could be found. In the bios sometimes both plextor ssd's are gone, sometimes only the second. Most of the time my samsung pro ssd on the other sata interface is still there. After a few saves and reboots the ssd's are in place again and I can boot w10. Most of the time I get another blue screen after a few minutes again but this time with the error that a critical process died. I repeat the same routine with finding the ssd's. After that the system works fine untill a longer shutdown. In the event viewer no signs of disk failure to find. I do have error for the processors: The speed of processor 3 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 71 seconds since the last report.

I suspect it's a motherboard problem but I'm not sure. Anyone an idea?

Curious. What is the brand/model number of the 128GB SSD standard in the MSI GS70 STEALTH PRO-006 (9S7-177515-006)?

Question to any Stealth Pro owners ... (vendors, especially) ... has there ever been a confirmed IPS panel that can be swapped for the stock TN panel on the GS70 Stealth Pro?

EDIT: So indeed there does seem to be an LG IPS panel that people are successfully installing in the GS70 ...

Here it is at Aliexpress.com: LP173WF4-SPD1
    ...

Here's a vid of a guy who swapped his:

I have a failed SSD in my GS70, no problem right? Just buy a replacement and install it. One question: how to identify which of the three has failed? Intel Storage Management says Port 5. How do I determine which one is Port 5? Are they labeled on the motherboard?

You should be able to read the serial number of the SSD from intel storage or 3rd party software, and just match it up with the serial number of the SSD when you open it up.

You can contact MSI directly for warranty service if your system is still under warranty.
They may allow you to send in the part only for a replacement, and they can also match the SN on the SSD to the original system.

Well, took off the cover and the SSD's in mine are Plextor PX-256M6M's. Thanks to riot123 I also now know which one has failed.

I decided to forgo the RMA in order to get back up and running ASAP without sending my laptop off. Ordered the SSD and should be here tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest.

You can do that too, but don't forgo your right.
Contact MSI still, and get that defective part replaced by itself, you don't need to send in the full system to get that replaced.
Once you have a replacement you can always have it as a spare, or just sell it to someone else.

Got my SSD today, got it installed and now the RAID is failed. Is there any way to integrate the new drive with the old RAID or am I going back to ZERO? Meaning: make a new raid with all three drives again?

Do you have a backup of your RAID0 drive image, that would be the C:\ disk (BTW Reflect free edition is great)? If you do then you can setup the new raid, use the rescue disk and copy back to the new raid. If you don't you are SOL, as raid 0 spreads the data across all disks, loose one disk, data is corrupt. You can't just replace one drive and get up and running without restoring a backup.

BTW I too have had a plextor PX-256M6M fail. My GS70 had 3 drives. Now it seems like a second is about to fail.

    All may not be lost:
When my first one failed I was still able to boot into Windows when it first started acting up. Then I used the Intel Rapid Storage Technology app to mark the drive as OK. Used Macrium Reflect to make a backup (hoping your system remains stable long enough to make the backup). Then after the drive went toast for good, I changed the RAID0 to only use the two good drives, and restore my backup image to the two good drives. So put the old drive back in and give it a try. If you are unable to boot now then your data may be lost and you'll have to reinstall the OS.

There still may be hope... I noticed on Plextor's web site that the firmware for M6M drives is now at 1.09, but the firmware on my drives is 1.01. It may be possible to update the firmware and the drive work. However I haven't been able to update the firmware yet.

    So my question:
How do you go about updating the firmware of the SSD drives when the drive is installed as part of a RAID 0 and is your primary drive?
Boot from USB, run firmware update? Is it necessary to disable the RAID0 in BIOS first so the update utility can find the drives?

On Edit... ok was able to do a firmware update on the drive that had previously failed. The drive had kept disconnecting, so I had it disabled in Device Manager. I enabled the drive in Device Manager, ran the firmware update on it, however that didn't fix it. It still randomly disconnects. And this confirms my suspicion that to run the firmware update on a drive it can't be part of the RAID0 array. So if you want to try this: Download the firmware update tool (it's a windows exe), create a rescue USB drive with the firmware copied to it, reboot, hold down Delete key to enter bios, go into the RAID setup and note the which drives (ports) made up the array and their order, delete the RAID 0 setup, set to boot to USB, save exit, boot to USB Windows rescue disk, run utility to update firmware, should find your drives now. After applying firmware update, go back into bios and setup RAID 0 using the disks (Ports) in same order as before. This keep your data intact.

    Thanks.

Wow, thanks for writing all that! It was as I was afraid it would be. My machine still boots with the bad drive in it. Its just unstable and can run from 1 minute to 30. I went ahead and made a "new" image, so hopefully that will preserve my data. I then created a "new" rescue drive on external USB. So now I'll delete the array, add all three SSD's back to it, and then boot off the rescue drive to restore the image back to the array. I probably should update the firmware, but being kinda lazy, I doubt that I will ;)!

This is turning into a nightmare. I have all three SSD drives installed but can't restore the image because the internal mechanical HD isn't being seen when I boot off of the recovery drive I made. Says it needs to format the RAID but I don't know how to do that without an operating system!

Got fed up, went to my original MSI backup image. It is being restored now onto the RAID array and recovery partitions are being put on the mechanical drive. I didn't really need my old data anyway, its mostly for gaming and thanks to STEAM, nothing will be lost. 50 minutes to recover.

Which recovery/backup system are you using?

A bit late but the rescue disk made by Macrium Reflect should have been able to do everything you needed, see
    http://knowledgebase.macrium.com/display/KNOW/Restoring+an+image+from+within+the+Rescue+Media

It's what I used with my GS70, however my backups were on an external USB drive, but still it should be able to see the internal SATA drive.

I tried to use the Windows System Image to save my data. It couldn't access the RAID. Being an impatient person, I went ahead with the MSI USB stick that I created when I first got the computer, that worked wonderfully! As soon as it booted for the first time, it asked to upgrade to Windows 10, so I did. That was a long process!

Later today I'll get around to personalizing it and installing my software. Then make a new "Recovery" USB stick.

Hi guys, I'm rather new here, I have a msi gs70 2QE ( Haswell) and I've replaced its stock a-data rams ( 1600mhz) to cosair ones at 1866mhz. Would like to know why does my task manager only shows my ram running at 1333mhz?. Cpu-z Shows that its running at 1866. Do I have to get an unlocked bios to adjust ram settings?. Thanks

CPU-Z may be showing you the speed the RAM was designed to run at, but your CPU only supports up to 1600 speeds. The memory controller built into your processor will work with a tier slower or faster than 1600, but will not actually run at anything faster than it.

Well, slowly, progress is being made. Figured out the "double power on/off" problem, it was Win10. Needed to disable Fast Boot in BIOS. Discovered "Windows key +X" to get to the control panel. So now I have it set up, made a System Image on a USB hard drive. Last thing is to make a Recovery/Rescue disk. BUT, it will only accept a USB CD/DVD drive. Once I solve that I can install Steam and start gaming again!

Well, the boot issue is back. Have to power on, power off and then windows will load. Anyway, moving on from there:

I'd like a backup program that will let me create a bootable USB hard drive (or flash drive) that contains the image and all recovery tools on it. The Windows method of System Image and then Rescue Disk won't let you use the same drive, has to be on two different drives.

    Suggestions? Macrium?

There are quite a few options: Macrium, EaseUS, Acronis (one of the best), Clonezilla, etc.

Oh!! ... recognize these tears!! Tears shed sorrowfully by an owner of a GS70 Stealth Pro who has had to recently send his beloved Stealth Pro back to MSI (in California) for RMA service/repair.

I can't believe it myself. It took me by surprise.

After 13 months of rock solid daily use ... gaming use, office use, music server use (the dual headphone/TOSLINK port is the bomb!!) ... I arrived at work the other day and set my Stealth Pro up on my desk and pressed the power button and ... and? .. NOTHING. No power button light, no on screen post messages, nothing. (!!!!!) (SHIZA!!!!)

I pressed the power button over and over, but no love. I tried three different AC power cables but all gave the same results. I read online guides, held the power button for a minute, and then released and then held it again but nothing. No lights no nothing. The laptop just didn't ever give any indication that power had been engaged.

And so, since I'm only 14 months in to my usage, still very much so under warranty ... I called MSI and they recommended that I send it back to them in California for Warranty/RMA repair. And this is exactly what I did .. thank god for MSI's 2 year warranty.

    ...

So I'm typing this on a MSI GE62 Apache (with the GTX 960M) ... it's very similar to the GS70 but just a bit smaller. I dig it.

Because I simply cannot do without a laptop and since I'd just a couple days earlier sent my Stealth Pro in for repair ... I figured I'd pick up a "backup" laptop from Microcenter and at 900.00 bucks or so .. and being somewhat familiar as it's an MSI machine, I figured I'd give it a run.

But regarding that weird problem with my Stealth machine ...

Has anyone seen such? I searched around the intrawebz and there *is* a bit of static out there regarding the issue of no power with certain MSI gaming laptops ... hopefully the warranty service will go drama free and I'll have my GS70 back in a few weeks ...

In the mean time ... this GE62 Apache is pretty fun ... it's a later model than my GS70, the latter being bought about 14 months ago ... and so this Apache machine has some features my earlier model Stealth Pro doesn't ... the Nahimic sound thing ... MSI True Color, etc. And like my GS70, the TN panel on this Apache is super good ... very bright, great colors, no bleed ...

Staying with MSI despite the hiccup with my Stealth ... great machines.

How did it go? Any updates?

Sorry to hear that, if you would like to share with your RMA experience please let us know once you get the system back.

No updates from me just yet. My family is here visiting and I haven't had time to work on the laptop. Still trying to resolve the multiple power on/power off cycle to get it to boot. Seems like it tries to boot before the RAID is ready.

Well amazingly enough, MSI only had the computer for two days and it's already on it's way back to me. All I received from MSI was an email stating that the RMA item was on it's way back. And on the MSI website, my RMA status shows that it went through all the stages and is now in shipping.

I'm pretty amazed an a bit perplexed by this as everything I read online indicated it would take at least 3 weeks to get the laptop back.

I'm expecting one of these outcomes to be the case:

    1. It was a stupid easy fix common to the Stealth machines and they had it done super fast.
    2. They have declined the RMA service due to my adding three mSATA drives (and in so doing, broke the "warranty void" sticker that covers one of the screws on the bottom of the machine

    ...

I'm hoping that the #1 outcome is what has occurred and I'll know by this Friday as this is when the machine is supposed to be back to me here in Houston.

Seems to me that if there was a problem with the RMA (#2) then they would have either emailed me or called me or even that it would simply show up on my RMA status page at MSI.com. I'm sort of reluctant to believe they would revoke a users warranty simply because he/she upgraded the machine in line with it's built in, designed specifications/capabilities but I know these things happen.

If the worst case scenario ends up being the case, I'll have to troubleshoot it myself and/or send it to one of the reputable vendors who can service the Stealth Pro's internal components.

Either way, I have the backup Apache Pro still ... and I will keep it if I have to. Would be nice to put that $1000 back in my bank though and so I'm hoping the Stealth is back in business...

    More later ...

    :)

For recovery I've decided to stick with MSI Burn Recovery. It sets up the RAID, installs all files and works from a USB stick. Later today I'll be working the Windows 10 issue of not booting. Any tips other than turning off "Fast Boot"?

Fast Boot may have disabled USB ports to reduce boot time.
What type of media is your Win10 installation based on?

Are there any restrictions as to what SSD will fit a GS70 Stealth Pro? I know they need to be mSata. My factory installed Plextor PX-256m6m are failing. I had one go bad a few months back. Took it out of the raid - 0 and disabled it in Windows. Now a second one is going bad (lots of BSOD and see image below). I don't have time to send it back for warranty repair, as it's my work laptop.
    Thanks
