What do you guys think

I'd say if you're gonna upgrade RAM upgrade the amount not the frequency, they say there is no real world diff
-
True , no real world difference in frequency but the same goes to amount !
I would go for frequency rather than the amount. An OC'd 1333hz Ram sounds sweet!
None of the games i play exceeds 55% (incl. Crysis , GTA4 etc etc) -
I could use 8gb for the sql server and so on since 4 gigs a little bit not enough for me anymore. I`ll take a look at those q9200, thanks for this.
The driver is working beautifully, thanks for that as well.No more aero crashes.
-
1066MHz to 1333 isn't going to do much in real world use.
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2009/01/26/intel-core-i7-memory-performance-review/9 -
who knows , by the time we upgrade there would be even better card around
If that's the case then upgrading to 8gb won't be a waste of money for you.
The thing i forgot to mentioned is that the Q9200 doesn't come as retail or OEM , just ES. And Overclocking a quad with turbo will only increase it by 4%.
If you want to go higher , you will need a bios flash. Been there done that and all safe. But not really needed as the 2.4 is enough to go through anything you throw at it -
Specs on this laptop are awesome, but the Fn key being in the wrong place is a dealbreaker, especially on a gaming laptop.
-
how could they do that to him ;( -
The keyboard design on the Gx seems to be better than the one on the Gt series though. -
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
Love the keyboard, its the same as the toshiba i currently use
-
Yeah all noteb's - gaming series are with same fn' situation :S sad for that...anyway could i replace the places of fn and ctrl somehow ? in the win registers ?
-
Through Firmware mod. You will get use to it after a while though.
-
i just saw there's some remapping of the keys using some soft. i just goggled it -
Sent an email to Gentech, was informed that these should arrive early next week.
Still debating on this or the G73 which is still a 4 week lead time from when you order. Was told the G73 is still the best deal as far as price per specs though. -
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
As long you never intend to ever move the thing the G73 is great. The thing is the bulkiest laptop I've ever seen
-
Whoever has the 740 pre-ordered needs to post pics and reviews as soon as you get it. Thanks in advance -
it's sexy , got twin HDD & Raid0 capability , backlit keyboard , nice res ....

For those of you that might be interested in MSI 1727 (Barebones version of the GX740) is arriving in this week and available with the HD5870.
It has a slightly different look then the MSI Branded GX740 but the same GPU.
-
MSI is teh sexier, lower res, possible quieter but thats unknown, fugly gaming design, rather discreet without the res!
haha.
Wait did you just say barebone WITH 5870???? -
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
-
What the hell?
Justin i'm just curious, whats the pricing going to be like, is that information available?
Guys if MSI are doing barebones with this kind of power inside, its going to blow alot of lappies out the water for certain.
Also, do you guys do reviews of units? I think one thing everyone is eager to see is how its thermals are, and a picture of the internals/pipes especially. -
Sweet ! A pic of the GPU please !
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
:O BAREBONES with 5870 already =D. What are the differences in appearance??
-
Definitely no RED in the barebones that's for sure
-
NO RED, HOME BUILDABLE LAPTOPS, VERY GOOD VALUE (Probably better value then pure manufacturer sale)
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
If you want to review pricing we have it listed in barebones or a build
It will look the same as the previous MSI 1727 (Black/Silver)
-
Starting at 899, i swear if thats just the the laptop + GPU itself i will cry haha.

Any chance a barebones of the GX640 coming soon?

Wow just specd myself an amazing barebones of the 17". For that price I think I might not be able to pass.
Any downside to getting the barebones besides the shorter warranty? Would it still have all the other stuff like the ECO system and what not?
EDIT: Does ECO even really work? -
i spec it out the same as a gx740 and it's more expensive. how do you guys get it cheaper?
-
[email protected] Company Representative
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
Well the stock GX740 is cheaper if ur willing to live with those specs. The beauty of barebones is cheaper upgrades
Also, hows the RMA on barebones? If things go bad will it be a huge hassle to get MSI to repair it? -
I don't think so, unless it comes with the G series touch board, which can be purchased seperately, then you gota go ahead and flash ec ware and stuff.

since the barebones are out, does that mean the branded version will come soon?
EDIT: rk, your website says the 640 is in stock?? is this true? -
[email protected] Company Representative
The GX640 branded is in stock at the manufacture and will be available to ship at the end of the week. -
The branded ones should hopefully arrive soon,
Personally i'd just buy the barebone empty if possible, that way you can pick up the remaining gear or hot swap with other machines.
-
thats some great news! are you guys getting a review out?
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
Exciting couple weeks here then.
So let me get this straight, do the barebones have the touch panel? If not, what's in its place? -
Yes, they have standard barebone touch pannels, but not G series ones.
I'm not actually aware of whats on the BB TP, but its possible eco is still there. -
EDIT. Wrong info
-
Hopefully we can get some solid reviews of this system when they start shipping. curious as to how the 4+1 speaker system is compared to others.
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
Hmmm barebones looks like an amazing deal now. RK has more options right now plus warranty. I can't buy til beginning of May, hopefully by then 1656-ID2 is up and ready to go. =D
EDIT: newb question, how do I install own OS on a laptop that doesn't come with one installed? What does it default boot to? -
I'm sure it'l be exactly the same, just a plain stereo 4.1 configuration. with no control over individual speakers, just left and right.
The rig supports 7.1 out, optical out and spdif out. -
Without OS , all you can access is the BIOS options. -
Yep, thats all there is to it!
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
Oh alright, all I've done in the past is overwriting the old OS, sounds good. Thanks for the reassurance. Barebones looks like the way to go, I thought the barebones versions normally didn't come out for a while.
-
Same price as the Clevo W860CU barebone from RJtech; this makes the decision rather difficult...
Clevo: Less bulky, great keyboard, great display, horrible battery life
MSI: 17" and lighter, much better battery life, horrible keyboard
Hopefully we can see some information on the GX740's display and exact battery life soon; Does it support switchable graphics? -
Looking at the barebones system on xoticpc...why are the hard drives so expensive? It's +$228 to add a 500 GB 7200 RPM drive...you can get a 7200 RPM 500 GB drive on newegg for $100. What gives?
