Actually MSI don't tend to, they've been hard fans of shin etsu, a very effective thermal compound.

I am convinced they tend to do so with review models. They are quite modest.

Whoa! those are some high temps.
Gets me thinking a 1 fan cooling set up is not gonna be good enough.

Aye, for some reason the review models always seem higher then expected, maybe its the testing conditions?

Definately, granted it cools the 4850 perfectly but this is 5870 seems to be seriously hot :S, ram heatsinks ftw haha. Kudos to asus for planning the g73 out nicely.

On the keyboard, I already have the MS-1727-id1,

which is the same chassis as the one i ordered, MS-1727-id2.

The keyboard is awesome, with no flex. No worries about the previous versions of MSI.

Well I honestly I already have the same chassis,

I might just think of swapping out the GPU and selling the new chassis with the GTS250m installed.

Definitely gotta check for some temps,

as the OC'd GTS 250m with i7-820qm, my current lappy,

runs a CPU temp of 93'c with GPU temp of 90'c

    on the same settings when the 5870 reached 103'c. ( furmark + prime95 )

    I'll keep you guys updated.

Look forward to the arrival (Y).

yeah, guess with prime95 and furmark put together,

    even the GTS250m hits 90'c.

As my gaming temps with the GTS 250m never went over 65'c,

I'm guessing the 5870 will be around 80'c, which is not bad.

I'll most likely to stress tests once I get the barebones and install the new WUXGA screen I ordered :D!

Yeah those temps are way too high .. My Oc'd 4850 don't go anywhere near those crazy numbers.

EDIT: I thought it was gaming temps ..

My furmark temps was about 68-70 i think

After I wrote my initial writeup on the 1727 (with and without panel/Heatsink mods) here:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=462077

With the temps I was getting with my 1727 w/ 920XM and 250M, I was really worried about the increased thermal budget in the GX740 and the trend for MSI to stay pretty much with the barebones reference design.

Those temps really scream panel mod + some heatsinks at the minimum. It really helps bring the temps down when you're pushing it against the wall. Furmark + OCCT/Prime95 isn't an everyday scenario, but if you can get it to handle that, it will handle anything including grandma and the kitchen sink.

Can't wait until the GX740 is released. Currently have the GT735 which I really like, but I'm passing this on to my kid, so I'm in the market for a new model. Tried the G73JH in a local store, but just didn't get a warm fuzzy. The touchpad was weird for one. I'd drag my finger around and the mouse would stop. I'd have to lift finger and drag again. May have been just that particular display model. Also, I really didn't care for the keyboard, the display, nor the fact that the power cord plugs into the side (and is not right angle). The GT735 was my first laptop (pretty much replaced my desktop), so I guess it has set a benchmark standard for me. The 735 has its quirks (some small keys and heat), but overall it is a very responsive, reliable, and a well designed system. The GX740 will offer the extra horsepower I am looking for, plus a design that I'm accustomed to.

and I'm gonna keep it for at least two more years,,

    but for that to happen,

haha.. I already have the MS-1727 id1, so I know what the screen is like.

I'm upgrading for the resolution to 1920x1200,

and the famous contrast ratio and brightness.

I like the stock screen, but I just love the feeling of such a huge workspace.

And the 5870 can handle that res flawlessly!!!! :D

So I'm giving it a go.

I'm gonna sell my MS-1727-id1, once i get the MS-1727-id2 from RK.

I'm gonna sell these real cheap :D about $500 shipped,

so be on the lookout on the NBR marketplace LOL

Aye, but even so its the barebone model, with the feature sets and stuff coming with the mainstream book, the screens could possibly be different, they used to sell 2 screens bar location,

And ofc rebranded screens were completely different too.

Also on RK there is no ID2 for now, where did you ordered it from?

When we originally put the product page up we had it listed as "ID2". MSI did not change the ID on the chassis as they have in the past when changing the vga, just the part number. The new MS-1727 with the 5870 is still an "ID1" chassis with a new part number. If you look at the link below they both as "ID1" now:

    http://www.msiwhitebook.com/product_spec.asp?model=MS-1727-ID1

I'm thinking of putting a 920xm instead of a 820qm in this beast..

But as electrosoft's review of the MS-1727 suggested,

920xm + GTS 250m caused heat throttling issues without the heatsink mods.

920xm + 5870 will likely run hotter than the GTS 250m combination,

and I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on this.

Should I stick with the 820qm? or should I try and go for the 920xm?

by the way, I bought zalman mini VGA heatsinks for modification,

and I purchased electrosoft's modded bottom case, so the heatsink modifications are exactly same as electrosoft's.

I know my GT735 ( with Turion ZM-82 and ATI 3850) can, at times, blow some gushing hot air just under the stresses of Warcraft. May be just this model though. How do you think the GX740 case is going to perform with i7-720 and 5870? Really want to go with a class one 5870 and not the class two 250M.

I'm thinking of getting the MSI 1727 too. Any other place to order the barebone other than RK? It seems like they don't have many in stock.

I have heard that they have good contrast screens but what about the brightness? The screen quality is very important to me.

    Thank you

I'd look to provantage. They have the barebones at a really nice price- though they aren't in stock yet, they just updated that they will have the product.

The screen quality, from my experience with ID1, isn't two-thumbs-up.
That's why I'm upgrading with the new screen panel.

If you're concerned about the grade of the screen, I'd say not to be too enthusiastic about the screen.

I have 2 msi's and both are glossy and look awesome. The colors are intense and the screens are super bright. I'm looking now for a new one and not sure if i should go with the 17" or the 15.4".

Again, we can't be comparing the screen quality to ID1, only when someone has the new BB then the comparison can be made and the model found.

But as corex says, he is enjoying the screens perfectly.

If you do some cooling mods and upgrade your PSU, the 1727 w/ 5870 + 920XM would rock it out I think.

I know the 1727 w/ 920+250 was pulling ~147w on its own. I expect the 5870+920XM to hit ~163w+. Targus 180w adapters can be found pretty cheap which is what I keep on hand.

The good thing is with the mods, the load of the 920XM kept the 250M extra cool and it never broke 70c under furmark+Prime95. The extra copper heatsinks on the GPU heatsink probably could have been bypassed. I would install them on the 5870, though, as every bit will help.

    Wow!
Great score, I think it's better than the scores I've seen with the ASUS G73 with the same exact specs.
    Thanks Rob :)
I'm guessing it could crack 10000 with a better CPU and overclocking the GFX card.

Yeah some temps would be nice when the benchmarks were done.
Hmmmm...... It's gonna be a tough choice between the GX640 and GX740.
They are almost the same size( I think the 740 is only 1 inch bigger).
The thing I like about it is it's small size and it's pretty thin for a 17" laptop only question is can the cooling system handle maybe a little OC without sounding like a hurricane.
I've finally narrowed it down to these to system and a CLEVO, good thing I got a little time before making a final choice.
Was looking at the G73 but after seeing how huge it was in person, forget it.
