Man... that G73. Every time I see it I look over at my ps3 and think their size is comparable. Might not be so but that thing looks huge.

It's way too big for me, I like to use my laptop on the road and not having it glued to my man cave :)
I know size is subjective but it's not for me, it's a great laptop spec wise and the cooling seems awesome but not exactly what I'm looking for.
That's why these MSI laptops are a good fit they still have all the power but are smaller in size which to me is a winning combo.

Looks great! How are the temps?

When you overclocked to the limit, on the RKcomputer forum, how were the temps on the lappy?

    Thanks!

Honestly did not take any temp checks. I have not seen a properly configured MSI notebook have a temp problem or go into thermal shutdown in over 5 years. I can screenshot some temps later if you like and I will put them up in our forum.

I am doing some battery life tests right now. When I am done i will run it through vantage again and screenshot the temps before and after the run.

Exactly my point , but most are still scared that it will craps out very fast.

Have you tried going higher than that ?

If you look in our forum (i cannot post the link here) there is the last run that was maxed out on the vga overclock. It was run through that max overclock 3 times in a row without failure. I will post the pick here later when I have a chance. The max overclock was 815/1100. That was with the ATI overdrive overclock, I will try the AMD overclock tool tonight and i may get higher.

    New to the ATi World,

what do ATi users use to overclock the graphics cards?

I've used nVidia all my life, so i need some help here.

I've downloaded ATi Catalyst 10.3 drivers in my backup hard drive for installation once the lappy gets here,

do I have to download any other important overclocking tools to OC my 5870?

I do not know.. I got the 10.3 from the website,

    the file name says 10-3_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu

is that a mobility or a desktop version?.. Maybe it is impossible to know from the file name... :D

AMD gpu tool seems to be more flexible? as Rob said he could get higher clocks with the AMD gpu tool?

Yes it's more appropriate for enthusiast :p It will let you go higher than the max clocks in overdrive.

Also , Overdrive comes with a built-in autotune feature which will oc it to the "safest" .. (if you don't feel like manually overclocking and testing :D)

Pretty sure you got the desktop one :p To get the mobility drivers you need to go through an annoying downloader. Here's the linky http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx

    WOW!
    That's insane with only a i7-720!
I can only imagine what a i7-920XM would get :)
I think 10000 in Vantage is reachable with a CPU and GPU OC.
    rob@rkcomputers
Is there anything in the BIOS to OC a 920XM if you get that CPU?
Now that would seal the deal!

I just did some tests with the temp screen viewable from the AMD GPU tool and will have them up a little later. I have not seen in any of the MSI chassis that support the 920XM an overclock option in the bios. There is none in this chassis either.

Are the pictures currently up on your website this current model or pictures of the old one?
    @rob
Do you see any temp problems with the 55W 920XM?
In other words can the cooling system on this laptop handle it stock and OC'd?

a bit high.. but room for improvement with modifications!

Are those with stock thermal compounds? or did you use an effective compound like MX-3 or ICD7?

Was there a cooler underneath the laptop when tested?..

Honestly if you take into consideration the overclock (which is pretty high) the temps are not extreme at all. They are actually pretty good!

I just put up the PICs of the actual MS-1727 W/5870 VGA on the product page with views of the internal's also. Tomorrow night I will have high resolution photos up of this model in the "notebook photos" section of our site.

All in all the temps were not to bad with a OC and stock thermal compound, you can probably see a drop of 3c-5c with the better thermal paste.
    Just one last question rob@rkcomputers
Are the fans loud under full load?
    I hate noisy fans!
Thanks for the updated pics :)

I have the same chassis, so the same fans so I could answer that for you.

The fans are audible in idle mode, but at load, they are comparatively quiet.

But they have a special mode, when under major load, it will kick into a mad spinning situation that will be like woah- is there something wrong with my laptop????????????? kinda situation, but it lasts only like 5 seconds.

Overall, the fans are quiet, don't worry! :D

I find the chassis irresistably cool and crisp.

Sorry for the lame newbie question. But my lack of google-fu lead me to the conclusion that the MSI 1727 chasis is NOT metallic, where as the GX740 is?

Also, I saw some conflicting information about the number of speakers/ports and chipset of the 1727 and the GX740 (while on the subject, what is the difference between the QM57 chipset and the HM55?).

I thought the 1727 uses PM55 and GX740 uses HM55. And I thought that HM55 is supposed to have better sound device, but specs of the two seem to say that the 1727 has better sound device? (and more speakers).

    thanks

Oooooooooooooh... tech stuff... Can't answer that...

MSI-1727 is not metallic, GX740 is metallic.
    Chipsets are located here:
    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/mobile-core-i7,2443-3.html

The sound systems are better on HM55... As the chipset explanations show such distinctions in HD sound support.

Hmm.. speakerwise. I really don't know about the quality of sounds.... As I only own a MS-1727-id1, but it is definitely one of the loudest... it blows through every laptop's sound in its proximity.. :D Dominate the region yea!

Thanks for the info. It is good to know that GX740 is metallic, since metal tend to conduct heat better, and I don't plan on using (any) laptops on my lap anyway. :)

As for the question about sound. I know that technically HM55 has better sound on the spec. But looking at various sites that sells GX740 and 1727, I get mixed msg about what chipset is used for the 1727 (is it really PM55?). Also, 1727 supposed to have 7.1 sound as opposed to stereo from GX740  .
And 1727 is said to have 4 speakers?

    7.1?..

    No..

There are 4 speakers and a subwoofer on the 1727 model though.

Hmm, I've never seen a laptop with a 7.1 speaker system... might have to check with the others.

    It's very simple.

Just run a Prime95 max heat / 8 thread + Furmark test for 20 minutes.

If it can handle that with no throttling and manage to stay in the 80's for the CPU and GPU, you have a winner. ;)
