Is there a way to check gpu-voltage in windows? to see if the flash was a success or not... forgot the check temps before flashing :)

Oh btw, what is that "NB Camera / EC / VGA firmware" that is listed on msi homepage? Should I flash that one too?

Gentech shows the GX740 in stock in NA. Has anyone received/seen one of these yet? The only review I've seen is over at Notebookcheck. Are there any other reviews out there yet?

Yep, got mine from Gentech last week. No time for a full review but no problems to report either. The video driver that shipped was from 12/09. Installed 10.5 from ATI (MSI's website only has the original driver). Haven't pushed the GPU for long gaming sessions but no heat or noise issues that I noticed. I traded back a GX640 for the 740. Very happy with the result. :)

    I replaced the 500gb harddrive with an Intel X25-M G2 160GB SSD. Now we´re talking :)

Btw does this thing support 8GB? Thinking of upgrading the RAM....

Here is my 5870 at 815MHz core in Furmark extreme burning mode. No undervolting or anything, just modded bottom cover, no heatpads on RAM chips, Zalman STG-2 instead (and ICD7 on GPU core). HA!

Awesome temps marecki. Any pics of the modded cover? No heatpads on ram chips? Did you notice that on your model the heatsink didn't make good contact with the gpu die due to the thick thermal pads. Same issue here with the GX640, but I solved it with a copper shim.

MSI should thank him. He's adding life to his GPU. I can't understand the factory vents for the GPU. They are nowhere near the heatsink itself. !

I have a spare bottom cover, because I have two MSI laptops: MS-1722 and MS-1727. I have no use for the MS-1722 now, so I will sell parts from it, I will keep the bottom cover though.

If You guys don't want to drill holes for some reason, You can try to remove the meshes from the ventilation holes. Before drilling the holes I had done just that, and it improved my temps dramatically. Holes subtracted another 5-7C, especially those on top of the fan. I hope this helps :).

well! after probably a few years waiting for the right time to jump on the gaming lappy bandwagon. I've finally bit the bullet!

For the life of me I could not find a Core i5 with a 5870 in the uk and happened to tell a Polish friend who said he had just bought one and they had some in stock.

Buy buy buy....on its way once the funds clear all for the glorious sum of £940 delivered!

    Cant wait :D :D :D

Ordered the MX740 last week and payed for it this monday.
Expecting it to arrive hopefully tomorrow or saturday ( coming from Holland as i live in Spain now :) )

Had to pay 100euro sendcosts :S but atleast i get US international layout and an English version of windows.
I planned to buy the Alienware M15x but at completing the order i had to pay another 200 euro's for taxes above the 1400 for the laptop. I do have my limits :p

But it is pretty funny actualy, i always told myself i will never buy a laptop but now that i am older i find it more pleasand to use a laptop for some gaming and still be able to sit next to my girlfriend instead of alone in a computer room :p

Hoping to have a lot of fun with it!

The GX740 will blow modern games out of the water, good choice!

17" is not super heavy as to being impossible to carry around,

but it can be a nuisance if you have a gf right next to you..

    :D

That's why I got rid of my laptop, it was simply too bulky and I seemed to be some computer geek with a friggin huge screen!

Nah, I don't game that crazily, I just opted for the 5830 in the Envy.

    But man,

GX740 will indeed max out most games, no worries.

Well i finaly have the laptop now since 2 days and ofcourse i am very happy with it!

There is only 1 thing that is bugging the hell out of me !!

With my old desktop computer i was able to get 8199 points on 3dmark06
    ( duel core E5200, 2GB DDR2, Nvidia 9600GT 1GB )
Not to much but then again the system is pretty old.

With my new MX740 i did not even pass the 7000 !!!!!.....

The parts in the laptop are all A LOT better then what is present in my desktop...
Is there something i am missing or did i forget to change something?
Yes Gaming mode was activated during the test!

Hopefully someone will be able to help me out here :)

    Regards,

    Jim

ps. specs of the laptop should be well known :p

run 3Dmark again and monitor CPU-Z, see if the frequency goes higher (multiplier should increase). If it does not, check in your bios settings that the turbo boost mode is enabled (or whatever it's called). On my X7811, it was not at first so I had to go in the bios settings to enable it... first 1M pi digits calculation took about ~25 seconds before, now ~14 ;)

RealTemp is a better CPU monitor, on the whole. It calculates the multiplier using a more accurate method, and it monitors temperature and load also.

    Hi!

From where did you bought your GX740 exactly? Because I live in Holland and can't find it anywhere. All online shops says they are out and they usually do not have an idea when it will be in stock again...

    Thanks in advance!

I have added some small copper RAM heatsinks onto the heatsink of the 5870 in my MS-1727. I attached them using Arctic Silver Thermal Adhesive. Here's Furmark at room temperature of 23C:

    GPU was running at 1.00V@800MHz.

Okay so I ran into an issue trying to undervolt my 5870 :
I flashed vbios with lowered voltages, then ran furmark stress again and realized it was just as hot as before. (Like 95+ in a minute or 2).
Then I dl'd orb gpu observer gadget to monitor my gpu (it says the voltage at which it is) and... realized the voltage on idle and load was still the default one (I think 0.9-1.15V but I'm not at home so I can't check).

Anyways, my gpu doesn't seem to take my vbios changes into consideration... Anyone had this issue before ?

Edit : I found cooltek vga-ram cooler , aren't these self adhesive ? Will I need AS thermal adhesive anyways ?

Is it how hard to upgrade the CPU on the GX740? I got some experience building desktops but none with laptops.

Found a new i7 820QM for a good price and now I´m wondering if the change is possible, is there going to be any heat, power or other issues? I´m getting the i5 430QM version.

Should be getting my GX740 within a week and I´m eager to get answers to my questions as I want to order the 820QM ASAP (if the upgrade is possible and not to much hassle).

I know I will be breaking the warrenty.

Thanks for any and all answers!

My 820QM is not heating too much, I don't have any power issue. I can't tell you if the swap was hard to realize, since I didn't do it myself, but I know the components in that barebone are really easy to access, so it shouldn't be an issue if you've already seen the inside of a laptop.

Pretty nice, did you record core temps as well ? Furmark only records vram temp.

It's not more difficult than changing a CPU in a desktop:
    - take off laptop's bottom cover (4 screws)
    - undo the screws on the fan and take it off (4 screws)
    - undo the screws on the CPU heatsink and take it off (3 screws)
    - change the CPU
    - clean the CPU heatsink from the remainings of the old thermal paste
    - apply new thermal paste on the new CPU
    - put on the CPU heatsink and secure it with screws
    - put on the fan and secure it with screws
    - put back the bottom cover and secure with screws
    - voila!

Screws are all the same size :)
There shouldn't be any thermal issues if You use good quality thermal paste and don't get overexcited ;-)

    Good luck and enjoy :)

    PS.
I have 720QM in my MS-1727 and top CPU temperature ever recorded so far was 76C under full load of 8 threads and the GPU. I live in Sydney, Australia.

Core temps were 1-1,5C lower than MemIO.

Sorry for a rather late reply, was kinda overloaded with work :S
    I bought mine from alternate.

I guess i took out the last one they had on stock because directly after i ordered it, on the website it went from "on-stock" to "available in a few days" wich means as much as a long waiting time

    Regards,

ps to my problems, it has all bin solved now :D sorry i got a little bit jumpy because it's my first laptop and also one worth 1200euro :p

Hey does the e7405 (basically a gx740 with i5) support switchable graphics. I know with the gx740 there is no integrated graphics in the i7, but with the e7405 there's i5 + hm55 according to this link, so it should have switchable graphics right?

Could you post some pictures of your copper RAM heatsinks on your 1727 ? Also, could you link to some reseller that has these heatsinks? (if you bought them online)

    Thanks =)

Thanks alot for your answers...just contacted the firm that I ordered my GX740 from, and they said that there is some delay at the importer (FIN) and it will take another month!...crap, maybe I should start looking abroad for a the laptop. Any Swedes around, could think of ordering from Sweden :F?
