I've seen MSI list 4/8 GB for the 980m and 3/6 GB based on the 970m but caveated with something like "based on architecture." So I'm guessing that means models at different price points. The question is, how much of a premium are they going to charge for the beefier cards?

Usually the models with beefier cards have also been ones with more ram or SSD in the past as well, so there is still some added benefit as well. They usually haven't put the premium GPU in the cheaper models without more ram or m.2/msata.

IsLNdbOi, what did that price out to?

Pat, at least from playing around with the GS60 config link that was on Gentech's site, it looks like the PCI-E x4 SSDs are on the expensive side. I'm guessing they're RAIDable on the GT72S due to the chipset difference? Main question is 128GB is pretty meager, but on the GS60, it didn't look 2 x 128GB could be RAIDed. Does the HM170 chipset not support RAID at all? Or is it just SATA RAID via the M.2 interface?

GPU fan spins more during benchmark but I still can't really hear the fan during FireStrike and I was at a very quiet room. :)

No I don't think the price will increase unless MSI add more stuff to the models.

I'll check again tonight and let you know. :)

There will still be 8GB 980M. The price between the CPUs seems to be the same.

    Thanks Ken!

Anyone know how much difference in price there is between the 970m and 980m versions? I'd preferably go for the 6GB version.

While I've gotten the Mrs. to go for a new laptop for my birthday/Christmas present, there's probably a limit to her kindness too. :D Not sure I could get her to go for $2400. I'm thinking I'm going to get a GT72S.

    I could "settle" for a GS60 if I had to. :D

Looking at the gentech PC link above, configured the ghost pro (looks like the refreshed one.. ddr4, skylake, usb 3.0)

Thinking of pulling the trigger, no tax no shipping to my state. $1699 in default configuration. $1983 when I upgrade to the 256gb samsung ssd ($219) and a 120w car adapter ($65)

This should be the new gen laptop right? Should I be the guinea pig? Nervous because it doesn't give much info on the screen, audio, keyboard etc.

MSI have been reading a lot of posts on various forums about the fan noise, it seems. They released that beta fan speed control tool earlier in the year, but it looks as though they wanted to sort things out internally. Maybe much more high quality fans, better build quality. A quieter laptop is welcomed with open arms :)

The GT72 won't have 970M 6GB, only the 3GB version. 980M will have both 8GB and 4GB. Price on 970M depends on the setup of each SKU, it ranges from low to high.

That's a bummer. Is there a shortage or something? It used to be easy to find a 6 GB 970m.

Is the GS60 going to get a full 970, or are they 3 GB only as well?

Please tell me they are at least 60Hz panels and not the 48Hz crap.

And can a 970m push 4k graphics at a decent frame rate with high settings?

The GS60 4K shipment not arrive yet, will have to wait to find out.

I think frame rate will suffer at 4K resolution regardless it's 3GB or 6GB.

It's the BIOS, screen and driver combined.

That makes it seem gimmicky to me at the moment. Not sure even if a 980m could. IIRC, I think a desktop 980 even struggles with that

Bummer that MSI is forcing it, though. Seems like this generation has weird compromises.

So if Svet could modify a bios, it would brr possible to enable it since the screen supports it, and the driver would then detect it ...

The GT72S is supposed to have the 75Hz panel too, right?

Ummm, what's the name of this thread again..... oh yeah..... MSI Skylake notebook predictions.

GEFORCE GTX 980 DESKTOP GRAPHICS COME TO NOTEBOOKS ;)

Hey Ken..... it's great to see the latest GT72 is so quiet....... hopefully we'll see the same in the new Skylake GT80. Speaking of the new GT80, you know I've been waiting for this one, sooooo consider this to be the pre-order, of my pre-order. You have my financial's, so I expect to be the first in line for the top SKU, and the bad'est GT80 of all time. Can you handle that? Let's Git Er Done!

Yes Svet is very good at modify BIOS, he can do anything. :)

But I think one of the GT72 wasn't advertised with G-Sync is maybe they just happen to have extra LG panels at the time of first batch, they might plan to use different panels on future batch so they don't want to advertise as G-Sync.

GT72S should still uses same panel as other SKUs but I'll let you know when we got the shipment.

Nice and thanks for the link, so nVidia did announced today as expected. :)

Yes the new GT72 is surprisingly quiet during benchmarks but I am sure actual gaming with high settings will be noisier.

Alright, but we still haven't hear any spec updates on GT80 from MSI but yes, I am sure MSI will make it a super powerful gaming laptop so stay tuned. :)

It was tested out of the box using Sports mode instructed by MSI. But I am still waiting for MSI HQ of how to locked at 4Ghz. I'll report back.

Cooler than many Broadwell CPUs out there, CPU core was at around 86C.

GenTechPC, the Broadwell 5950HQ runs Fah @ 3.5ghz sustained with CPU core temps:

    fah 100 percent cpu hwinfo.JPG

Haswell also ran that cool on the G750JH, but lessor cooling like on the G751 shared CPU/GPU cooling was 10c more.

The Broadwell and Skylake are running the same 14nm generation fab, so the temps should be very close to the same.

If you are looking for low temps on prime95, Fah, or any other long term compute jobs, try finding the stable long term multiplier and set it to that via XTU.

That lower multiplier will also allow for greater undervolt via XTU, which means it will run cooler and help support sustaining that multiplier longer - indefinitely hopefully.

What we are hoping with the higher / variable TDP is to have a higher sustained multiplier, but finding that natural multiplier first and undervolting is a good first step at getting a higher sustained multiplier.

Thanks for taking the time to work this all out for us early :)

Sorry? Are you replying to me? I didn't mention anything about a 980m or 980.

I feel sorry for the first person showing up in this forum with the 6820hk. Lol, imagine the requests to fulfill.

Should we all take a guess, I wished we had all the info now but we don't so many details on this forum about 980 gpu equipped laptop prices and one better than another is fan boy speculation which is typical nonsense.

Just be patient and everyone will find out concrete evidence soon.

I expected the gt80 6820hk with 980m sli to have a small price hike and I expect the 980 sli to prob have a 500+ tag over the 6820hk. Just don't expect it for free
