The Microcenter Web Store - you might need to Change Location to it to see this with the i7-6820HK :

    http://www.microcenter.com/product/454617/GT72_Dominator-019_173_Laptop_Computer_-_Aluminum_Black

It is in stock and you can order it now :)

Doesn't it seem odd, to have the same CPU, the 6820HK in two laptops so far apart in pricing?

$4250 US for the Special Edition with new 980 GPU, and $1600 US for the 970m model, and they both have the same CPU, the 6820HK.

Seems like Intel is spreading first the Skylake offerings pretty thin.

$4250!!! For that it better give me a hand job while I use it... Thanks msi for putting that thing out of reach for so many of us.

Its not a direct conversion. If i remember right, the GT80 was 5,000 EUROS but only $3,699 in the US.

I've been keeping an eye on this and the new Asus g752. Unfortunately the pricing on the new Skylake models with 980gpu seems to be similar between the two brands. Hope this is just for the extremely loaded models.....we can only wait and see

Here's what I know at this point.

GT72 base price with a 3 GB 970m and no SSD starts at $1599 from one retailer we've seen.

Samsung PCI-E SSDs are pricing out at $129, $219, and $399 for 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB, respectively, at Newegg.

Retail price difference between a 970m and a 980m at rjtech is $270 (for 6 GB/8GB versions). This will give us a good approximation.

So for a GT72, we should see prices somewhere around this:

    Base: $1599
970m based with SSD: $1728, $1818, and $1998, depending on SSD size.
980m based with SSD: $1998, $2088, and $2397, depending on SSD size.

GS60, we'll see base with 128GB at $1699 at Gentech. Assuming MSI ships 256 or 512 GB versions, we'll be looking at approximately $1789 and $1969, respectively.

We don't know what the GT72S will price out at yet. However, with the better IPS panel and the different chipset (CM236), I'm going to bet at least a $100 premium over the GT72 for an otherwise similar config. We also don't know how much the GTX 980 will price out at, but I'd add a few hundred for that card at least.

And of course, prices varying depending on customizations from our friends at Gentech, PowerNotebooks, Xotic, etc.

So those are my guesses at this point. :) Thoughts?

Just guessing - I'm thinking a fully loaded GT72S with a GTX980 will be around $3000. You'd have plenty left over - maybe buy a GS60 too for the portability at that point? :D

    Lol - a glutton for punishment. :D

That thing's a beast. MicroCenter had one sitting out and that was just way too big for me. I'm even on the fence about the GT72S, but the upgradability and support for VT-d has me planning on getting it at the moment. I've really grown to like the 15" platform.

It's not much bigger than the 72. It is much thicker than my current laptop tho (Razer blade pro) So it's quite a jump for me.

Direct I/O for virtualization support. It allows direct access to the hardware devices so you can use them as intended. An Nvidia card will appear as an Nvidia card rather than a generic VGA adapter, so you'd be able to use the full capabilities of the card. It also increases performance.

Not a huge benefit if you don't use VMs, like VMware workstation. But for those who do and like to game as well, it can be pretty helpful.

Meaker, I've noticed the updated cooling, but what have they done to improve that on the CPU? Different fan hardware, or is it software related?

superguy25, pick it up next time you are in MicroCenter, the GT80 is surprisingly light for it's size. Due to the keyboard taking up the front area, and being less dense than the component area, the mass is much less than you would expect.

The GT80's not svelte, but in the provided backpack, the MSI Hermes, it's not a tough carry. The GT72 comes with the same backpack.
    http://www.msi.com/collections/pages/MSI-Hermes-Backpack.html

It's about the same weight as my G750JH.

Hi Gentec, are g-sync working on the GT72 models?

Looks like the US specs are more correct. no more 75hz panel. its 60hz, as its on mine and as comfirmed by MSI HQ.

G-sync still does not work correctly on my gt72s.

Ansem, yes, the 6820HK needs a XTU / ThrottleStop OC profile to show it's value. The article you referenced is 4.0ghz OC, but hopefully it can do a bit better.

Some mention that it is locked to a max of 4.0ghz though, so we need more info / confirmation.

At stock speeds, the 6820HK is doing a bit better than I expected. I thought the 6820HK would be closer to a 4720HQ, but it beats that, and edges just past the 6700HQ.

I wish these sites would list the 5950HQ in their comparisons, but notebookcheck in particular has removed the benchmark results they had for the 5950HQ.

According to my own tests the 6820HK @ 4ghz is about the same or 5-10% faster than the 5950HQ @ 4ghz. Same goes for the 6700K @ 4ghz, but it can OC further than 4ghz.
