You may need to move a wire a little bit to get the mSATA SSD fitted in the slot and screwed down.

Forge possted some pix a while back.

I'm assuming the difference in price is due to the compact nature of the mSATA or that there is a larger supply of the normal 2.5" drives vs mSATA drives.

Sorry guys.. Just need some laymen term n advice. If I order the ge60 and I want to
Install a ssd drive.. Does that mean I need to remove the existing DVD optical drive with its bracket and I need to install another bracket in order to house the ssd drive and the adapter card? What is this bracket call ? And the adapter card is called?

And w/o the optical drive, I have to invest in an ext optical drive?

    There are three options.

First option would be to use an mSATA SSD. If you go this route, you have an SSD, an HDD, and an ODD. mSATA SSDs are commonly more expensive then regular SSDs.

Second option would be to replace the stock hard drive with an SSD. Then you have an SSD and an ODD. You can put the HDD into an enclosure.

Last option would be to replace the ODD with an SSD. In this scenario you have an SSD and an HDD. You would need an external ODD if you wanted to play discs.

    Hi forge, appreciate the advice..

Where can I connect the msata hdd if I choose the first option. I would keep my existing hdd and use my odd as external but which option will be cheaper? Can this msata act as my primary c: / os drive which the laptop will boot up or this msata drive can only act as a storage drive to house my photos, songs and video etc? Because its the speed of the msata I want so I thought use the msata as my bootup OS drive

For 1st option.. Just get a msata.. Connect to?

If 3rd option, would I need to change the odd bracket in order to house the SATA hdd?

You really don't want to put a SATA III SSD inside a caddy into the optical bay.The optical bay is only SATA II.

If you got your GE with a stock mechanical hard drive I'd put that in a caddy into the optical bay,put a normal SATA III SSD into the internal SATA bay and put a SATA III mSATA SSD into the mSATA Slot to have 3 internal drives that are all able to have an OS on them or a combo of storage and operating systems. The mechanical drive in the caddy is the one I'd use for storage and one of the SSDs just for gaming..

ODDs are IMO obsolete but if you do have need for one you can put your stock ODD into an external box or buy a USB ODD.

I just bought 2 caddies locally that were $8 each.

    Hi WTP

Whoa ssd term are confusing me..

In brief, you mean take out my existing SATA hdd. Get a bracket/caddy, fit the SATA hdd into the bracket and install on the existing optical bay

Get a SATA lll hdd, install into the existing SATA slot

Get a msata hdd, install on the msata slot ( does GE 60 comes with is in built msata slot?

Get a USB ext optical drive.

So I need the bracket to house the SATA hdd into the optical bay.. What is this bracket call?

In order to install an SSD into the ODD, you'll have to remove the ODD and put the SSD into a caddy/bracket, and then install the SSD into the ODD bay. And you can indeed install a SATAIII SSD into the ODD slot, it's just you won't get optimal speeds.

For mSATA, all you need is the mSATA SSD and a single screw. Look in the GE60 Optimization guide. There are some pictures there.

At the very bottom is the SanDisk U100 mSATA SSD that MSI chose to put in the Super Raid models.

Words can have different meanings when spoken by people educated differently to them.

The pin outs are different on normal SATA SSDs and mSATA SSDs.

To put an mSATA SSD into a normal SATA bay and have it work would require an adapter.

The caddy pix shows a caddy with a Western Digital hard drive sticking out of a GE60

    Here's my understanding in pictures:

I bought GE70 with the "Full HD" screen ( this one) and the resolution is too much for my eyes. I'd like to get a screen with smaller resolution. Will this model work? Or this one? I see that "Lamp Voltage" is different between N173HGE-L11 and N173FGE-L21, but "Input Voltage for Panel" is the same. What does it mean? Are they compatible? Or does anyone know what HD+ screen MSI puts into GE70?

Since that Micron c400 256gig is the same as the Crucial c400 256($225 after shipping), does it really make sense to look at the mushkin or mydigital offerings($350) until the price comes down? Micron C400 256GB 6Gbps mSATA SSD Review - Crucial M4 mSATA SSD in Disguise - The SSD Review

I couldn't find the mydigital or mushkin anywhere for under 350 bucks. The 7% performance increase isn't worth the 40% price premium for my purposes.. Post link if you can find for under 250 bucks plz.

I got a GE60 a few weeks ago, but I'm trying to separate the sound between my headphones and the computer speakers. I'm trying to get ventrilo working with my headphones (with the internal laptop mic) and my music through the laptop speakers. I can only get them both in my headphones. Anyone know any solutions?

Something interesting I found out: Your ODD has to be set to drive letter D for the eject button to work. I installed Daemon tools, and for whatever reason the virtual disc was D and my BR drive was E. Eject button didn't work. Went and switched them, and now it works fine.

I picked one of these up earlier today: Everki Lunar Laptop Briefcase, 18.4in at Memory Express

It was big enough for the laptop, but once the power brick was in there, it didn't have a whole lot of room for everything else. It is fine if you're just moving a notebook plus some papers (maybe more than some).

I took it back and got this instead:

Everki Titan Checkpoint Laptop Backpack, 18.4in at Memory Express

Super huge. Managed to fit all of my stuff in there, and I still have a ton of room left. Pretty big jump from the bag that came with my Asus G73.

I'm considering buying a 2.5 SSD and putting the stock HDD on the optical drive bay. I noticed that caddies are either 9.5mm or 12.7mm. What would be a better fit for our GE60? And how can I tell if the caddy delivers SATA 2 speeds because I've seen one reviewer say that he only gets SATA 1 speeds? Product descriptions on amazon aren't very clear about these things.

    Thanks in advance!

    Yo! still thinking if i should get ge60 or a sager/clevo w150erm.

Anyhow, this is the setup I plan on getting if I go for GE60 over the clevo.

    Intel® Core™-i5-3210M,3MB
    6GB,DDR3 1600MHz
    500 GB SATA
    DVD-RW
nVIDIA Geforce GT650M 3D Graphic Card 2GB GDDR

First, what's best, just getting an mSata or remove the cd-drive and get a normal sata disk?

As there isnt many review about ge60.. how good is it? cooling? sound? stability?

    Is the screen any good?

Anyhow If I get this setup + msata/ssd disk it will end at around 1238USD

    -------

The other choice I have on the clevo is almost same specs. It's like

1 x Standard, 1920x1080, 60% NTSC, No idea if this screen is better or worse then ge60
    1 x I5 3210M | 2,5-3,1 GHz 3 MB, 35 W
    1 x 8 GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600 MHz (2x4 GB) 2gig more ram then ge60
1 x Nvidia GT 650M 1 GB GDDR5 Worse graphic card as it is 1gig only
1 x Intel Centrino Ultimate 630 Better wireless then ge60?
    1 x Arctic MX-4

Another plus on msi is that it's lighter. But the finish/looks on msi if freaking ugly! I like clean looks :D

    This would cost me 1338USD

Anyone have information on the effects of HyperThreading on heat/voltage with regards to Ivy Bridge Mobile? I know that with Nehalem, if you were not reaping the benefits of HT, disabling it was easier on the CPU, allowing it to operate stably at lower voltages and heat. I don't foresee making use of the HT feature, but I also don't currently see a way to disable it.

that is the old version the 0nc version you might be able to still buy it i havent checked but the new version in the 0nd version with gtx 660m 2gib gpu and 8 gig 1600 ram 750 gig hdd.
i love my ge60 and i haven't really found any drawbacks.
The cooling works fine if you keep the vents uncovered. I have 12 tabs in chrome running plus skyrim on ultra graphics and the fan is on lowest speed. Apparently the paste on the cooling system has to cook in for a week or so.
The screen is awesome the matt finish sure makes a difference and i have really been thinking about lowering the resolution from the max of 1920x1080 and i already have everything at 125%.
One thing you might have a problem with is if you are into cutting edge games you might have a problem with the current gpu drivers as they are still working the kinks out.
I got this in the USA for $1200
Also i spend most of my time looking at the screen not the back of the computer plus the pics really accentuate the red lines( not reaaly noticeable) And if it bothers you there was a guy a few posts back who repainted it gave it a brushed metal look.
Stability seems fine i haven't tweaked anything tho.
Performance wise i have run x3 terran conflict, Aion, Skyrim, and any thing i have thrown at it at highest graphics settings with no noticeable frame rate drops. i know i haven't tried any major high end games yet.
As for sound i have a room mate so i use the headphones( the gold plated port plus good headphone make for awesome sound quality)
Regarding the comments about the keyboard im not a fast touch typist but i like the keyboard (i guess im a heavy typer i like knowing when i kit a key)
msata is supposed to be sata 3 the caddy is only supposed to be sata 2

    Hey guys,

Just tried using the search but having no luck. I'm wondering if somebody can help me.

Does anybody know how to force enable the 650m GPU? I try switching on the nvidia control panel and it keeps auto switching back to integrated even if I've set my browser (Chrome) and the preferred to 650m. Pressing the Turbo key only brings up the Futuremark site for some silly reason. I'm trying to play Minecraft but it's not a .exe I'm using and the integrated graphics is pathetic even for Minecraft.

    Thanks!

Hi! I'm new to the forum. I shall be receiving my GE70 sometime next week and am interested in installing an ssd. I'm looking at the 60GB Runcore Pro V mSATA SSD 50mm SATA III off Amazon. It reads and writes at some 500 MB/sec. Does anyone have any reservations about this product, other than small storage size? I plan on installing windows plus some commonly used small programs on the SSD as well as steam, Dota 2, tf2, and maybe half a dozen games at a time. Everything else will go in my hdd. Any foreseeable problems or concerns? Will my system adequately make use of that speed? Is it comparable? What will be the bottleneck in my system? Finally, is it a bad choice with respect to price/performance? I could find no reviews at all.

Why do you want a mSATA SSD? You might struggle fitting all you describe on a 60GB drive as well.

Do you want the mSATA because you don't want to lose the hard drive?

I own the Samsung SS 830 (256GB) and it's my main drive for my GE70. Highly recommended. I've got Diablo 3, Empire Total War, Civ 5, StarCraft 2, Skyrim and Shogun Total War installed alongside my other programs. Sitting 99.7GB free. For other games, I'll just install/uninstall whenever necessary. The old 750GB internal is now sitting in a nice £10 external case and will provide additional media storage.

Sounds like you want to install a bunch of games etc. I'd definitely go for at least 120GB. Recommend a 160GB or above.

    Maybe something like this?

Perhaps 64 is too small, but the less wires I have the better. I'd really like everything in a single package. I'll look into prices and reviews for 2.5 inch drives and if it beats msata value I may have to take your advice. Honestly I only play 2 games consistently, and I have very fast internet.

Edit: 128GB Transcend mSATA Solid State Disk SATA III 6Gbps this, for instance, looks good.

Minecraft is java and java has an .exe file that you can set to only use the dedicated gpu. Works fine for me :)

While running Minecraft, open the Task Manager. Go to Processes, and find the Java.exe that appears to be Minecraft (usually identifiable amongst instances of Java.exe due to massive memory usage). Right click it, and select Open File Location. This'll tell you exactly which and where the file is. You can then go to that file in the nVidia control panel and set it to use the dedicated GPU.

Keep in mind that anything else that invokes that Java.exe will also turn on the GPU.

PS: i dont have problem with its weight or anything, so mobility is ok in that case, just this :)

Well I know it comes with a bloatware program called SuperCharger. I don't know if it does the sleep and charge but it might. As far as I know the SuperCharger helps you charge items faster than normal with a usb port but i'm not sure if it does the sleep and charge. I uninstalled that program before testing it out.

Yes, it does. There's an option in BIOS to enable or disable it.
