Just ordered my GE60 :p. It should arrive next week and if anyone has questions about the machine that haven't been answered yet I can check them out, maybe even make a video.

Want to ask if any of you play Skyrim on the GE60 and if yes, what FPS do you guys get?

It should be around 30-40 FPS on Ultra and perfectly playable on High/Ultra settings. I plan to test it when I get my GE60 though as I've only played it on xbox so far and I missed all the mods..

I was just playing SW:TOR and my CPU reached 95. The laptop was so hot I shut down the game. *Nothing* is overclocked.

Sounds about right, getting around that even with a bunch of texture mods install.

    Hi everybody,

I know you all have probalby answered this question millions of times, but I've narrowed down my search between the GE60, Y580, Asus N56VZ, and Sager.

My main concern with the GE60 is it sounds like there's issues with overheating and loud fan noise. I don't need to be playing any games on Ultra settings but want to check with actual owners if they have issues with heat or fan noise.

I'm also not a super hardcore gamer, just some SC2 here and there with some photo editing.

And finally, why did you choose the GE60 because I'm sure you've looked at the others in my list. Thanks!!

I think that the so called "overheat problem" is the result of a lack of understanding of the intel turbo boost technology. This automatically overclocks the cpu by a lot if there is thermal headroom to do so. 95C might sound like a lot but it is not a problem temperature.

I play SC2 8 hours a night 4 nights a week with my GE60... it doesnt overheat... no clue how they have that much problem with heat...

Mine doesnt heat at all even with the gpu overclock (8hours of heaven bench and temp never went above 80oC).

You can max out SC2 but you might face some problem with low fps in team game with a lot of unit... i just leave it to high with a fps cap of 45.

Yes the laptop can get kinda loud... like any laptop in gaming mode... btw the laptop is dead silent during normal stuff like web browsing or movies...

Sager is cheaper.... Asus is more expensive... and I dont know about IBM...

But the main difference for me is... less weight... less height... MSI is brand name (unlike those sager reseller)... and was cheaper than asus for the same hardware (it might have changed in 2 months).

Thanks for the detailed reply! One last question, how do you guys like the keyboard and track pad? I heard it's firm, difficult to press down and makes a lot of noise?

I really appreciate the responses since I can't find anywhere local here in Michigan that has this laptop for me to go and see.

As others have said, weight was a huge selling point for me compared to the others with similar specs. I really like the look of the laptop too and don't mind cleaning the finger prints off every now and then.

I am very impressed with the cooling as well, in normal use there is no heat at all and dead quiet so i can effectively use it as a business laptop as well as gaming. I use the keyboard for a lot of typing and quite like the feel of it. The track pad i don't use much but i like the rough feel and is more than adequate for general use.

Screen is excellent and i get about 3-4 hours of battery life with word, pdf viewing, endnote and web browsing on battery saver mode so more than acceptable.

mSata! Installed a 256gb m4 crucial as boot and kept the 750gb for data and this thing flies, such an easy process too and great being able to keep the other hhd for storage.

Keyboard takes some time to get used to... it doesnt make that much more noise than a "gaming" usb keyboard...

track pad is probably the worst thing on the laptop... but u should use a usb mouse anyway... mine is always disable...

Personal opinion... keyboard is a 7/10 and the trackpad is a 3/10

but the overall laptop is a 9/10... for the price.

Only thing it really need is backlit keyboard...

Was browsing my taskbar recently and noticed a strange looking program. Updateui.exe listed as Intel ME FW Recovery Agent. Never noticed this before. I just bought my MSI GE60 recently from Gentech and was hoping some other users could verify that is a harmless program. I found in under program files(x86) and it is in an Intel folder, I just don't know what it is used for. Any help would be appreciated!

is there any direct competition to this laptop in terms of performance (GTX 660M) portability (<6lbs) and size (<1.4" thick)? I've looked at the ASUS N56, but it doesn't have a mSATA slot which is very important for me. The only competitor I see is the Retina Macbook Pro but that's $2600 + tax and I would never be running OS X. It seems stupid to buy a Mac just to run Windows...

Also, anyone have any idea when Newegg will put the item back in stock? I also really want to know if items that come with Xbox's previously go out of stock, when they come back do they retain the Xbox deal?

I think the Lenova Y580-20993BU would be compete quite well with the GE60. It has the same processor and graphics, the 1080P screen that it has is glossy not matte, but you might not care. It does have a mSATA as well. The weight is close (lenova says 6.17LB), and the dimensions are the same (15.15x10x1.4 (LxWxH) inch). It also has the same price (when it's on sale at least) of $1,200, however I think it is going to stay on sale for a while as otherwise it can't compete with the other brands. Here is the specs PDF from the lenova (Canda) website http://www.lenovo.com/shop/emea/content/pdf/notebooks/ideapad/y-series/y580/en/Y580_DS_EN.pdf

Keyboard takes a bit of getting used to. Keys on the left seem slightly more spaced apart than my previous laptop, an MSI GX640. From time to time, I hit ctrl-x instead of ctrl-c, and ctrl-c instead of ctrl-v.

I agree with regards to the trackpad. It's rubbish. Then again, I think all trackpads are rubbish, so.... Another thing, the elan drivers seem to interfere with my usb mouse, making the cursor skip around every now and then. Uninstalling the elan drivers solved the issue for me.

But overall, I agree with megaBUD. It's an excellent laptop for the price.

I'm considering the GE60 as my next laptop. Most stores seem to have two different models: a $1099 with GT650M and 6 Gb of RAM, and a $1199 version with GTX660M and 8 Gb of RAM. Do you think the difference is worth the extra $100? For that money I could also buy a small mSATA drive and install the OS there.

In my opinion the GPU is worth the difference, because it makes your rig more future proof. The GT 650M can be overclocked nicely too though, so if you really want that mSATA go with it (you can upgrade the RAM later ofc.

Well... if the 650m is DDR5 than no... it doesnt worth the 100$...

If the 650m is DDR3 than yes... the upgrade worth it...

Better speed... and better possible Overclock :)

Just got mine yesterday, after about 3 hours of TF2 the CPU max. was 86C and the GPU max. 72C, (don't know the average while playing though, just looked at HWiNFO when I finished) so I'dont think your temps are abnormally high.

Edit: just checked and idle is around 39-40C for the CPU (GPU not enabled so I don't see the temps of that). Also I love to finally have a quad core CPU; this thing is faster than I imagined :p .

Those temps are most definitely not to high! Laptops may very well go over 90C without any complications, so you just keep your gaming going!

By the way, I'm probably getting my own GE60 today! Can't wait for it. after all the positive feedback it has you guys have given it!

I use a program called HWiNFO. (It's very popular amongst forum members so I guess it's one of the better monitoring apps.)

I've tested Skyrim today btw. On full Ultra except Medium shadows and 2xAA, 16xAF and with HQ texture and model mods the game ran very well, mostly between 45-60FPS, the lowest dip being 31FPS. Max temps were 92C for the CPU and 86C for the GPU.

The N56vz only comes with the 650m right? There's no 660m variant?

In any case, at least for me, the lack of easy access to the good stuff would be a major turn off for me. I'd hate to have to tear down the laptop everytime I wanted to repaste.

Guys I'm in dilemma right now, should I sell my GX660 and buy the new GE60?

    My GX660 specs: i5-520m, HD 5870 1GB GDDR5, 8GB ram, 500GB HDD -- Pros: Dual SATA for SSD/HDD Cons: 3.4kg, heavy
GE60 specs: i5-3210m, GT 650m 2GB GDDR5, 8GB ram, 500GB HDD -- Pros: 2.4kg, Cons: mSATA slot for SSD (in PH no shop sells mSATA SSD)

In terms of gaming is there a significant boost?

I've bought my GX660 for $950 six months ago
    GE60 sells for $890

If im going to sell my laptop the market price for 2nd hand GX660 is $800, then I will spend another $90 to buy the GE60

    Is it worth it?

My previous computer was a GX660R. Had it for about two years before going to my current GE60. There's a a definate performance boost, and it helps that you get that boost at a thinner and lighter form factor.

With that said, the 5870 shouldn't have any problems with most games. The only problem game I had with my overclocked 5870 was Witcher 2. Granted, I don't have many intense games, so there might have been others.

I say go for the upgrade, while your GX660 is still relatively new (and thus able to command a higher selling price). You'll get super tech all around, though the mSATA thing might be a pain.

I didn't have time to tweak the GPU settings much yet, so it's basically on stock settings. (The thermal paste is stock as well.) I plan to mess around with overclocking and such next week though.

Also - if you didn't find out already - for the GTX 660M to show in HWiNFO you have to start a program that enables it (like a game) first, then start HWiNFO up.

After 1-2 months of using the MSI GE70, here are my observations:

I just only noticed recently that I have some sort of dirt inside the screen that sometimes bothers me but I really cant do anything about it.
There was also one time that the laptop was consuming more battery than expected for unknown reasons which did bother me because I was in-transit home and it was a 2-hour travel. Only happened once though.
I never actually updated any drivers on this thing but I don't have any issues with games (except CS:GO when it heats up more than the usual as compared to other games. Tried it on GW2, DoTA2, WoW, BF3, CS:S, SC2, etc.)
I also had some issues with getting C&C3 to run on turbo-mode (I have to manually configure the shortcut to run on the GPU. Not really much of an issue I suppose)

No keyboard issues as of date - still a learning curve at times (I keep on pressing F2 instead of F1 :\ )
mSATA works great (using crucial mSSD for my OS + Steam games. Will put my Windows 8 here as well)

Other than that this is a really awesome laptop - and honestly I'm amazed until now how light this thing is as compared to other laptops of this tier.

Do you mean which brand SSD you should buy? I'm planning to get a 256GB Crucial M4 mSATA drive and I'll reinstall the OS on it and keep the stock 750GB HDD as a data storage drive.

I'll get the Crucial one because it's cheap, but decently fast and reliable. There are many other ones out that are even better than the M4 if you have a bit more money though, so definitely take a look at the SSD forum section :p .

I had a similar thing happen. What was happening was that my habits were to close the lid on my laptop to put it to sleep, then to turn my wireless mouse off. I guess any activity from the mouse would actually bring the laptop out of sleep but I wouldn't notice as I just shoved it into my bag. Luckily it didn't get too hot and went back into sleep mode after an hour.

The laptops doesn't come with a recovery disc. You'll need to burn a Windows 7 disc or make a bootable USB stick and reinstall from that. Use the Windows code from the bottom of your laptop.

Yes, what Forge said and then install all the drivers that came on a disk with the laptop (or you can manually look up and download the newer versions and install those).

I'm quite a noob at this, but I've heard about some program which clones your Windows install and you can just copy it to an other drive. Maybe someone with more knowledge about it can give you some details :p.

Whoa, thats not good. Did you check to make sure your memory is connected properly and that there is no dust in the memory slots etc? Since the machine is new Amazon should cover the cost of fixing this issue.

Definitely send it back to Amazon to get a replacement unit.
