to anyone with the Ge60 i5, 650m what benchmarks did you get on passmark for the cpu and gpu? It seems like i am scoring much higher than the average for te 650m and the i5 3210m

About GPU performance... Beta Nvidia drivers v. 310 came where using 680m performance in some games increased up to 24% or so. 20 games total.

This is the main reason why i went with the MSI instead of Asus... light and thin... but dealing with the warranty is getting difficult even for a 3 months old laptop...

Those GTX680 game performance numbers in the chart are for the desktop GTX680 in the Asus Rampage IV motherboard with a i7 3960X clocked at 3.3GHz.

LOL, so what? If you usually read description of Nvidia drivers you could notice such words as increasing performance in some games for GPUs 4xx or later. If it is better for desktop 680 GPU then it will be same for other 6xx models.

intresting! im installing the new 306,97 driver now i m currently having the 295.93 im looking forward to some benchmarking and see if that improves the preformance as well. Does it boost the preformance for 3D cad too?

I have a feeling that they increase performance by making better SLI and single card gaming profiles... so most likely not. However as 6xx is not so old series then perhaps newer drivers indeed make of use hied reserves... you hope :D

not too much of a difference only 1 point :p I got a score of 1402 at passmark 3D now. Might overclock it a bit and see what happens, what settings should i change in the BIOS?

    Hello everyone,

I am looking for a 17inch laptop for work and some game when time permits. At work I need a good computer since I will be crunching data from large data files (anywhere from 1-50 Gb at a time) so I have thinking of using gaming laptop, especially if it can be light enough to carry to work and back. Originally, I was looking into the Razer Blade R2 but after reading numerous complains about WiFi and switchblade issues I started to look everywhere. As far as I could see, the Ge70 is the only other "lightweight" 17inch laptop out there (please correct if I am wrong). I have been looking at the Ge70 0ND-213US from XOTICPC MSI GE70 0ND-213US - XOTIC PC - MSI 17.3" Custom Gaming Laptop. As anyone used this latest version? How light is the actual laptop (they claim ~6lbs)? How durable is the construction? Will it survive ~3 years of daily use for work and play?

Also, I have been looking at the following configuration from XOTICPC to maximize performance and storage (I need a big HDD for file storage).

    MSI GE70 0ND-213US
    - FREE!! UPS GROUND SHIPPING (Use Coupon Code "FREESHIP" in Checkout - U.S. Only, Not Available to Alaska and Hawaii)
    - 17.3" FHD 16:9 "Matte Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright LED Anti-Glare Screen w/ 72% NTSC Color Gamut (1920x1080) (SKU - X1R551)
    - FREE - 30 Day "No Dead Pixel" Guarantee w/ ANY Screen Upgrade (XPC Service)
    - 3rd Generation Intel® Ivy Bridge Core™ i7-3740QM (2.7GHz - 3.7GHz, 6MB Intel® Smart Cache, 45W Max TDP) (SKU – X2X318)
    - IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU (Cools better than all Compounds) (XPC Service)
    - nVidia GeForce GTX 660M 2,048MB PCI-Express GDDR5 DX11 w/ Optimus Technology (SKU – X3R529)
    - COPPER COOLING UPGRADE - Extra Cooling Copper Heatsinks Applied to the Heatsink/Heatpipes (XPC Service)
    - 16GB DDR3 1600MHz [SKU-824P] (Dual Channel Memory (2x8GB SODIMMS))
    - Standard Laptop Finish
    - 256GB Crucial Solid State mSATA III (Primary Drive w/ O.S. Installed)
    - 750GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache Buffer (Serial-ATA II 3GB/s) (SKU - X5R303)
    - 6X Blu-Ray Reader + 8X DVDRW/CDRW Super Multi Combo Drive (SKU - X7R552)
    - Internal 5-in-1 Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS PRO/ xD-P)
    - Bluetooth Included *With select wireless cards only* (See “Wireless Network” Section Below)
    - Bigfoot Networks Killer™ Wireless-N 1202 + Bluetooth 4.0 (Dual Band) (SKU – X8R008)
    - Integrated Digital Video Camera
    - Sound Blaster Compatible 3D Audio - Included
    - Smart Li-ion Battery (6-Cell)
    - WINDOWS 8 - 64-Bit (Pre-Installed + Drivers & Utilities Disk)
    - Keep factory installed operating system
    - 3 Year Parts & LIFETIME Ltd Labor Warranty 24/7 Tech Support w/ LCD Accidental Damage Protection (SKU - X9R013)
    - Standard Production Time

They price this configuration at 2549$ which I find acceptable. So what's everyone opinion on this Ge70?

    Thanks.
    Cheers.

@danielschoon That would be cheating if they were trying to increase 3DMark and PASSMark scores just by creating better profile for benching software :)

@Prometous I have just seen bad reviews about Ge70 on Newegg 0ND-033US (lil bit older model with slower CPU). I wouldn't put 2000$ in such laptop. A part of bad keyboard and somewhat flimsy case as someone mentioned there it has other problems appearing in 2-4 months.
I will get my laptop in 3-4 months (sea shipping) so can't say smth else.

Can ANYONE HERE post a screenshot of PhysX Menu in Nvidia Control Panel??? And can you bench performance increase in PhysX games if you set PhysX to a CPU (Intel HD4000)?

As I see it is hard to reach good overclock on MSI GE70 and also I heard that some people got fried GPU in 4 months after buying laptop...
As I also saw yesterday in 660M Ocing Thread that better grease on GE60 or GE70 improves GPU temps from 90 to 80C. So just if you don't know you can get even better cooling upgrade.

At this time you can be a tester of Indium TIM which is much better than usual grease and most likely even ICDiamond. Even more! You put it once and never need to replace. Jut tell that your laptop has awful cooling etc.

I'm really considering drilling a grid of holes in the backplate. I've tried running my GE60 with the back panel taken off and GPU temps were 6-7C lower than with the plate on (back corners raised by ~1,5cm in both cases), so if drilling holes gives a 5C drop it's worth it imo.

I'd tell you to google 'being a ," but honestly just look in the mirror and you'll have the answer.

Ever think maybe not all blu-ray drives fit in a ge60? Ever try to use a Sony remote on a Panasonic TV?

those things tend to have standard size´s it hasnt got any use producing differebt sizes to fit in particulary laptops. ONly note not to buy a desktop blu-ray. If you want a more specific awnser try to specify your question. You can look up on google what blu ray is the best or where you can buy it. It is not nice to affront DaCM , When you want a more specific awnser speciy your question. I am not gonna ask what 1456/34 is when i can just get a calculator to do it for me..

It's not nice to affront me indeed. Especially when I've given you the best possible answer to your question. If you put that 10 seconds of effort into looking for Blu Ray drives instead of posting here ('still looking' ...meh) you could have found one very easily.

Anyway, just to reiterate, these drives come in a standard format and no matter which type you get, it will work in your GE60 as well. Just go find the cheapest one and you're done. Or if you want a quality one, read some reviews (personally I don't know much about Blu Ray drives, so I can't recommend you an exact model).

when i would overclock my 650m how much higher scores could i get? Im using pass mark now and my top has been 1402 points without overclocking it myself. I wonder what max i could get without using seperate cooling and being able to complete a few minutes of benchmarks without overheating. I´d just like to test it at a quite high speed and then settng it back to default as i dont really need more preformance.
I dont really know anything about OC but i think raising the clock speed and memory speed in your BIOS could make your GPU faster. Or could i only OC a CPU with the BIOS? Or what program is best to OC my 650m? I tried it out a bit with my dell desktop but it being a dell it didnt work at all.

You cannot OC the CPU at all. You can use MSI Afterburner to OC the GPU by 135MHz max, however if you want to go over that you have to use nVidia Inspector. There is a Kepler OC gude in the gaming section, check that thread out, it contains everything you need.

+rep. I assume on PhysX games you can increase performance setting it to work on Intel HD 4000.

I hoped that turbo button not just OC GPU but also increases fsb... is it for sure all it does just ocing gpu?

P.S. Danielschoon, perhaps we will have same graphics cards. I bought on eBay used GE-70 0n c for 634$ and hope it is in 100% working condition L.

i think it is only GPU. When i do CPU benchmarking it doesnt flash on so i dont think it has anythng to do with the CPU. But i still havent got an expanation why my i5 has got an 10% gain over the average so it might be the case after all.

Are you gettting an Ge70 with i7?

Yeah. I7 is the cheapes which is 3610QM which I could buy for 150 recently on eBay but still price is good.

Turbo button flashes only when Optimus is turning on dedicated GPU. I will look at it closer when I get it. At this time I better forget about it.

P.S. Now I think that I had to buy barebone MSI with 680M... Perhaps I will if I sell future laptop and buy even «futurer one» LOL

+1 Nice! I just got my 650m well above the 660m average :D Gone from 1402 points to 1745!

What exactly is the difference between the 660m and the 650m? I couldnt find any other than higher memory speed and core speed. Now was i thinking would it harm my computer leaving it on max setting if a 660m is basicly an overclocked 650m. Both systems have the same cooling so it should be ok or did i just think too simple?

650m and the 660m is the same card... only difference is the memory type (old 650m uses ddr3), core is faster... and is rated to takes more power...

At the end there's no difference between the 2 card if you have the "new" 650m which use ddr5... they both overclock pretty well but are both limited by the memory bandwidth (128)...

For a "mid range" mobile gaming gpu... its a pretty good one.

Price isnt everything but... it does help... the MSI GT is between 300 and 400$ more expensive...

Until the next generation of console... the 660m is plenty for "medium/high" graphic setting @1080p, 45-60fps.

i got the new 2gb ddr5 so i could just overclock my 650m and say its a 660m pretty cool. Are both cooling systems in the ge60 with 650m and 660m the same? So i could OC my 650m without frying it?

@daniel... you kinda missed the part about power. I would bet on higher voltage level on 660M. Higher Voltage means higher Overclocking. All overclockers need is always low temperature with increasing Voltage level and clocks.

Proof on wiki about same core
On March 22, 2012, the first Kepler products joined the 600 series: the GTX 680 for desktop PCs and the GeForce GT 640M, GT 650M, and GTX 660M for notebook/laptop PCs. The GK104 (which powers the GTX680) has 1536 CUDA cores, in eight groups of 192, and 3.5 billion transistors. The GK107 (GT 640M/GT 650M/GTX 660M) has 384 CUDA cores.

im just talking about a stock 660m compared to an OC 650m. Would they generate the same heat is my question basicly.

I have the same but i woudnt recommend doing so. Note that not only the z and y are exchanged. All the + ´- . ä ö ü ß stuff is different and if you were going to swap the z and y you´d have to swap them too and set language on American again. Otherwise you wont know which button is where, the computer doesnt see the difference in z and y it he see´s only theire place.

there is a nice proram for exchanging keys which is called keytweaker. It can remap or set not just letters but also commands like play/pause, calculator, mute etc. Works with Windows 7.

I think that Yes. it should heat the same as stock 660m. But I will not be surprised if temps will differ.

@danielshon, 750Mhz is Throttling clocks. If you want to OC higher than 135Mhz then you need either BIOS mod or special bat file of Nvidia Inspector.

How to do it with Nvidia Inspector.

What you want is to get close to this value :) http://3dmark.com/3dm11/2492348

    You can try this code
    nvidiaInspector.exe -setBaseClockOffset:0,0,135 -setMemoryClockOffset:0,0,500 -setpowertarget:0,111 -setVoltageOffset:0,0,0 -setGpuClock:0,2,1100 -setMemoryClock:0,2,2800 -forcepstate:0,1
To use it either create bat file named overclock.bat in your Nvidia Inspector directory or just ask NVInspector to create a shortcut of current clocks and then just modify the properties of the shortcut.

I do NOT guarantee that it will work for you but 1 guy wrote that he uses GE70 and 650M.

To go to the default settings you need to create another default.bat file in the same directory (or just a shortcut) and write there code
    nvidiaInspector.exe -setVoltageOffset:0,0,0 -setGpuClock:0,2,750 -setMemoryClock:0,2,2000 -forcepstate:0,16
Just in case compare your current clocks with what is in the code.

im sorry what exactly is a bat file and where should i save it? IM really not good with software just pretend i know nothing at all. I seem to have only the NVidia inspector where is the directory  Could you help me please?

edit: i kinda opend the cmd now but it is same to me as opening a chinese book what do i have to do to locate the directory containing nvidia inspector, or create a .bat file in its directory? Sorry for my absence of knowledge..

What a coincidence! ME NEITHER! :spinny: LOL

    1. Download portable (I would do) NVInspector.
    2. Put it in on the Drive C or in the Program Files folder (not sure if it should be x86 folder or usual Program Files folder).
    3. Open this NVInspector folder and right click>create text file.
    4. Copy and Paste in the text file that code I gave you. Save file. And rename it to Overclock.bat (not txt). Then Double click it.
But as I said compare clocks in code if you want that overclock.

    Same with default.bat.

If you want to get good overclock past 1000 Mhz core you should also download latest Throttlestop and Disable BD Prochot whatever it means.
good info in this post http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...ound-max-clocks-oc-stability.html#post8708811

to make sure that end of the code must end like this "-forcepstate:0, 1" you can turn on video playback or smth average to turn on 650M (light Turbo button) but not very heavy and look in the NVInspector what P-state value does it show.

I do not guarantee anything. Big overclock may harm laptop, void warranty etc.

    reinstall latest nvidia drivers.
check pstate as I asked you. tell me what state do u see loading it.

download teamviewer portable. I will take access to your laptop if you agree

Also perhaps you need to set in bat file Pstate to P5.

Send me PM with account and password if you agree for access.

They are the same chip, however the best ones become 660Ms and the rest is 650M. What this means is that a GTX 660M is able to OC to somewhat higher clocks usually.

Can someone post the width and height of the GE60's screen (LCD only, not the frame)? I know it's 15.6" diagonal but I need to know the actual width and height. Thanks in advance.

given all laptop have same 16:9 there can be a general formula made:
((16a)^2+(9a)^2)^0.5=15.6 this is just plain and simple pythagoras 16a being the width and 9a being th heigt
    now get those a´s free
    (256a^2+81a^2)^0.5=15.6
    337a^2=243,36
    a^2=0,7......
    a=0,85 -> 16a=13.6`
after mesuring the same value comes out

hope it helped now knowing the general formula you can do the same for 11 13 and 14 etc

I think i got the most powerfull graphics card of all the people from my year at the Uni weird how under rated and over priced graphics ugrades are here in Holland. Evryone just focusing on raw cpu power. I think lots of people will prefer an i7 3610Qm with 610m (some dudes have that laptop) to an i5 with 3210m. Will be fun doing some heavy 3d CAD projects and evryone having a hard time  execpt me and some other dude with the 650m.

for now just first make a review about my laptop

Did anyone try to use RAID 0 in GE60 or GE70 (mSATA + SATA)?
Does BIOS let any settings for it?

Is anyone else getting problems with windows 8 and your wifi? Im having terrible issues with stability, win7 had no problems like this. - Basically the wifi signal drops, I get no internet settings, sometimes it says full signal but no actual connection. Troubleshooting usually fixes the problem but on the other hand this is happening pretty frequently. Doesnt matter if its plugged in or using battery.

Other laptops (win7) are fine at the same time when my win8 GE60 is having issues. - Sometimes all webpages load terrbly slow.

I don't see an option for any kind of RAID in BIOS.

Thanks. Perhaps someone can mod a BIOS to add RAID Option ROM. Will ask later out of curiosity.
