I had this problem until I downloaded updated drivers directly from Intel.com. Haven't had any WiFi issues since (knock on wood). See Intel Download Center.

Not sure how far you want to OC a mobile GPU... I did push the chip up to 1150 and theres barely any difference with the "normal" overclock with afterburner (1085)...

Memory OC didnt help much either...

More heat... and more noise from the fan... but yeah you can push that baby very high if you need it... but at the end we are limited by the memory bandwidth...

For mid range... this gpu is very good.

Now if i could get a new HD from MSI... that crapachi keeps clicking... its the stupid "parking" feature that is messed up...

The graphics RAM is soldered to the motherboard. The system RAM is fully user replaceable.

cant modify the bios. You can OC with MSI afterburn or with NVinspector (i couldnt do it didnt work for me). But MSI afterburn is fine for normal OC you can get it a little ast 660m so its fine i wouldnt temper with it more due to cooling

Ask svl7 to mod the BIOS. Give him download link.

Cooling is not so good indeed but overvolt to the numbers of 660M and Overclocking to the same should be fine. + you may increase it later.

You need to by 2x8GB Kit. Preferably 1600 Mhz RAM. I hope you really use heavy software unless you will not feel the difference.
I suggest either any Low Voltage 1.35V RAM like Mushkin or so called high performance Corsair Vengeance (though difference will be near to invisible).

    Hurry Up!!!

We all know that because of slim design our GE laptops may overheat. I used one of the best coolers with my 16.4" Sony VAIO F which is Cooler Master Notepal U2 but for my upcoming MSI GE70 17" I bought today Notepal U3.

Till the end of Monday in the USA you can buy so far best notebook cooler for GE70 Cooler Master Notepal U3 for just 12.99$ after 10$ rebate! www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997872

For GE60 owners I must say that smaller cooler NoePal U2 which was for 12.99$ even without any rebate is already sold out.

Not much time left for U3. Welcome.

Hello! I already saw and read the whole section about the SSD part. I saw that part that showed a step by step on how to install the mSATA ssd but can anyone explain to me on how to install just a normal SSD? I got a Kingston Hyperx 120gb 2.5 SATA rev 3.0.(like by replacing the HDD stock)
And I also read the other option of replacing the ODD with the SSD( and if anyone could provide a how-to, that would be lovely) but another person said here that installing the SSD on the ODD would affect the performance and you wouldn't get the maximum performance by the SSD. Is this true? Because I dont mind replacing the stock hard drive with the SSD but if I could, I wouldn't mind using both the SSD and HDD.
I'll be getting the MSI GE60 0ND-257US in a week or two ^^

Zbuy 2nd hdd caddy from eBay for like 9 bucks. You will xchange it with ODD and put in it your HDD. Put Samsung or Crucial SSD or whatever you have in main drive slot and install OS. Preferably from usb flash drive.
Then after all drivers installed connect 2nd hdd caddy.

Does the HDD have to be on the ODD though? Can't I install the SSD on the ODD and set it as primary?

    hey guys i'm back :)

i bought some arctic cooling mx-2 from newegg for free after rebate. I haven't applied it yet, but i've been getting artifacts while playing a few games on pretty low settings, so i wanna give this a try
I've been monitoring temps, and they stay fairly low, however i still see artifacts.... if paste does not resolve this issue, what other things should i be looking at?

quick question... do we know the life of the turbo fan? Is it replaceable?

    thanks

Hey everyone I have been debating on a laptop for the past two months and am torn between the Sager 6165, Lenovo Y580 and MSI GE60.

    Here is some info

    1. I will be using this for 5 years until getting a new laptop

    2. I will be gaming at medium to high settings 3-5 hours at a time for games like Borderlands 2, Black Ops 2, Skyrim and some upcoming games like Farcry 3.

    3. I will be using this as a desktop/video camera/console replacement that can be mobile when it needs to be (for school that requires something stronger then my Acer Aspire One 533

    4. It will be at my desk 75% of the time so it wont be moved around too much

    5. I dont mind the 650m graphics card

    6. 3 hours battery life while surfing the web and watching youtube vids would be preferred since I doubt I will be gaming away from an outlet for more then an hour.

I plan on investing in a cooling pad if need be and an SSD a year or two after getting the laptop. If the HDD or RAM goes out after 2-3 years of how I will be gaming then I am fine with replacing those.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. The Y580 users arent giving me any replies and I am a couple weeks away from purchasing my desktop/console/video camera replacement.

@Yellowyunicorn you said yourself that you are already aware about performance decrease in ODD bay. It will work as SATA2 most likely.

@ shniggies Artifacts, you say? Why do you think it is a temperature?
    1. Install newest drivers
    2. Downclock MEMORY Clock via Nvidia Inspecor. Minus 30% for example. If it helps then your Memory is bad. If not then other reasons are possible.

@danielschoon Sure you can. Even up to I7. But if you want faster I7 it is possible that there are 2 different versions of heatsink with bigger amount of pipes for CPU cooling. Google for a pictures of GE60 disassembled and compare to yours.
Perhaps I will sell you mine when I go for faster CPU ;)

hi James, thanks for the reply... actually i was contemplating downgrading my nvidia drivers... i don't remember seeing any artifacts until i upgraded
i'll try the drivers first, then try the memory like you suggested.

    thank you!

My GE70 0ND arrived yesterday. So far pretty happy with my purchase. Quick experiences so far... keyboard is better than I expected. It has a very short throw, it responds well to light presses. The touchpad is way worse than I expected. Might be the worst touchpad for a laptop I've owned (this is my 6th laptop). But I got this as a desktop replacement and use a mouse anyway, so not a big issue. Speakers are impressive sounding. The headphone out is less impressive, not as good sounding as my NuForce uDAC. Very happy with the performance. Enjoyed some Borderlands 2 and Chivalry Medieval Warfare last night, played smoothly at mostly maxed settings.

One bothersome issue right now is that the 660M seems to stay active more than it should. For instance, the turbo button is on, Nvidia's GPU activity monitor indicates the 660M as on too... but all I have running is Chrome and the Steam store browser. Why? The GPU activity monitor does not show a program using the GPU (it does show games if I run them, so it works). Even if I unplug the power and put the system in the Power Saver profile it remains on. I'd be fine if I could even just force it to switch but that doesn't seem to work well either. With the 660M being almost always on it really kills already only average battery and I believe it's why my fan is spinning more than need be.

Any advice? I'm also happy to answer any questions about my issue or about the laptop in general.

Don't forget to use advansed mode of installing drivers and check box Clean Install. Do NOT install physx software from driver package but download separate latest PhysX installer. Do it always, not just for testing purpose like now. I wish you Luck and hope that it is not hardware issue.

If you can send laptop back for free I may consider this. 2 weeks no hassle send back is handy option in situations like this.

currently using the original drivers from factory(gtx 660m) , game that i've playing planetside 2

PS : which driver suit the gtx660m best performance , sorry i'm not really a PC/notebook expertise..only know some of the basic

About modded BIOSs, I know for a fact that svl7 have modded the GPU vBIOS for both the 660m and the 650m versions. I think that both are the E16GAIMS.10A BIOS for W7. Forge have a thread about the 660m version but I have tested his 650m version for a couple of months. I am currently running the core at 1105 MHz and memory at 2800 MHz with the 306.97 drivers (with earlier drivers where slightly less stable for me). The GPU can get very hot in the most demanding games that constantly maxes out the GPU but maxing out the fan lowers the temperature enough for it not to be a concern, but most games are not that heavy. Note that I am not using a cooling pad or any cooling mods.
If you ask svl7 kindly I am sure that he can share it with you but don't take him for granted.
Be aware that MSI are warning for installing w7 BIOS on a machine that came installed with w8.
Remember that overclocking is almost always a bonus, be happy if you can get it even slightly higher. A card is only guaranteed to run at stock frequencies. Some cards can go a lot higher and some can't.

I read that someone have problems with the touchpad. I have the same problems, for month I could barely use it because it clicked at random when I dragged the mouse pointer. Then I changed the sensitivity a couple of times and now it is definitively ok.

In general newer GPU drivers are at least as good as older ones. If your machine came with pre-300-series drivers then you should definitively upgrade. Official support for the mobile kepler cards came somewhere in the 30x.xx drivers.

Has anyone tried turning a GE60 into a Hackintosh? Been really interested in OSX lately and would really like to have it on my laptop.

EDIT: Should also mention I'm asking about the 0ND model with the GTX 660M.

Hi regarding your comment about installing W7 bios on a machine that came installed with w8. I bought the newest model of the GE60 that comes with Win8. Unfortunately I didn't like it much so I deleted all the partitions and EVERYTHING and installed a clean windows 7 ultimate. i had a problem at first after i installed all my drivers that made the computer go into a endless auto restart issue but after i did another clean install of win 7 it's been fine. I did go to the MSI driver site and under Win7 for the GE60 I installed all the drivers including something for the BIOS. All i did was run the .bat. Is that how you update the BIOS? Should I be worried and get a recovery DVD from MSI and get Win8 asap back on or should I be pretty safe now.

"- If the notebook you purchased has Win7 Bios installed, please DON'T attempt to update using Windows 8 bios (or vice versa). Failure to abide may result in bricking your system.

    - Although there's a bios detection program written to protect user from cross flashing the bios (Win7 to Win8 bios or vice versa), still DON'T experiment. Failure to abide may result in bricking your system. "

    About updating the BIOS:
    "For Windows 8:
To know about how to update win8 BIOS under windows mode, please click here.

    For Windows 7 / VISTA / XP:
    a. 1) To know about how to update BIOS Firmware under DOS mode, please click here
    2) Please execute "flash.bat" file after unpack the compressed file for upgrade BIOS Firmware.

    b. To know about how to update BIOS under windows 7, please click here (Only for CR640 / CX640 / CX640MX / CX480)"

I you followed the instructions for updating the BIOS provided by MSI and installed the wrong BIOS then you might have some problems. But if everything works fine, everything works fine.

Find out what biggest artifacts free clocks you can get.
Now I am 75 percent sure that it is bad vRAM and if you continue using at stock clocks you kill it finally.
You can try tear down and put silicone heatspreaders or copper one on vRam chips but not sure if it helps.

So i sent my Crapachi hard drive for warranty last week (was clicking)... today i received a brand new WD hard drive...

I was very happy that it took less than 7days to send/receive the new hard drive... and it was a new unit and not refurbish... sure i had to pay for shipping...

So now my machine is better than it was... hitachi makes really weak hd...
