Hey Guys!! I read almost the whole thread and now I am almost convinced buying the Ge60 with the GTX660.

Only thing stops me buying this laptop is the "piano lacquer finish" which i heard is a dust and fingerprints magnet.

    1. Is this annoying for you?
    2. How often do you have to clean your laptop?
    3. Is it difficult to clean it?
    4. How do you clean it?

    5. Here in Switzerland i ll pay about $1,600 dollars for the Ge60 GTX660 model what do you think?

Thanks in advance for your answers!

1 Not that much because I consider myself to be a very patient person.
2 Depends on where you plan to play. I use it inside my dorm and my place is pretty clean but i dont know where the tiny particles are coming from... I clean it if i have the time which is every 3-5 days.
    3 Pretty easy.
4 I use the sunglasses cloth i have to wipe the screen and keyboard area.
5.I would definitely recommend this laptop to anyone but if I had the extra 300-400 dollars I would have gotten myself the gt60 but nothing beats this laptop in the 1200-1300$ price range

I want to thank everyone for contributing to this thread. I decided to buy this computer over all others i was considering including the Lenovo Y580, Gigabyte P2542g, Sony and other MSI models.

I was looking for a relatively portable/lightweight gaming computer with good display and entertainment features.

I'm buying from XoticPC without a hard drive because i bought a Samsung 830 during BF sales. I'm also getting the Intel Advanced-N 6235 (i think that's the model #) over the Killer solution since I wanted to have Intel widi and miracast compatability, plus the Killer cards seem to have driver issues.

I bought a P2542g initially, but I returned it cause it kept locking up since the first time I turned it on. That and it had a horrible touch pad buttons.

i got my Ge60 in germany for under 900€. The i7qm and 650m (really better overclock the 650m than take that 660m same preformance 100€ lower price) for 1000€. They ship all over europe so that wouldnt be too much of a problem. MSi´s are quite cheap in germany

i'm assuming you mean lower the clock until i'm artifact free... is that correct?

FYI, i'm planning to apply new thermal compound to see if it helps. I found this informative tear down document:

    http://forum-en.msi.com/faq/uploads/159/MS-1756_Disassembly_guide.pdf

anyone else having problems with artifacts playing d3?

Yeah. Phrase "artifact free" I made up to sound like "sugar free" (with 0% of sugar) or "fat free" (without fat).
    Did you get any success?

    repped, thanks

so about nvidia inspector... i noticed that after i under clock (-30), sometimes it goes back to the default 0 value. Is there a way to permanently store this value? Is there any harm to run at -30 under clock?

    thanks again

No harm but 30% lower is big sacrifice. I wrote it just to be sure where is the problem.

Go to Nvidia inspector and press the button "create a shortcut with current clocks" or smth like that. Then right click, properties and write here the full path of shortcut. Then I will tell you what to change in a path. Then you put edited shortcut to a Autoboot folder so it would load settings each time.

Anyone experience freezing (no BSOD) when removing a HDMI cable? I'm using the 310.61 Beta drivers. Don't normally use beta drivers but it was the only way to get Black Ops 2 to work...

yea after i had posted my question, i figured it out.. thanks.

the screws that are holding the cpu/gpu down are on very tight! i couldn't get them off with a hand screw driver, so i need to charge my battery for my drill... lets hope some paste will help, but if its a memory issue, i doubt it...

ON the previous page you can find tear down guide. Thank that member for useful info :)
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/661914-official-msi-ge60-ge70-owners-lounge-151.html#post8980147

No BIOS change nor other dances. Just disassemble the laptop and put new CPU.
If something goes wrong then just post here.

Are you going to upgrade for yourself to see if it helps CAD or just to sell it? Or maybe at first for yourself and then sell it? :)
What and where are you going to buy?

there is on ebay a trusted seller of mobile CPU´s but theire prices seems to be a bit steep
items in Shirley's CPU store on eBay!
I think ill go for something cheap s i am bound to 3610QM or a 3630QM. I think it wouldnt be worth it cashing out considerably more for a 3740QM or 3840QM. But im open to anything if it has a reasonalb price. I might as well ask in the NBR market if someone has a cpu for sale. Im willing to pay around 200€ for it and sell my i5 so spend something like 100 in total (i think icould flog my i5 for around 100€ not). But first i have to sort out my finances. I hope to get some computer stuff or funds for christmas. I really hope to boost preformance with some nice 16gb RAM and an i7QM.
What would be a good price for a used i7QM? I wouldnt have a clue and willing to pay a fair price but not too much you know.

i have seen that guide really usefull! :)

    Hey All,
Just got my GE60 here in AUS (660m version). Installed latest Nvidia Drivers etc etc.
Last night I was raiding in WoW, (so not the most intensive game), and I kept getting 1-3 seconds freezing, then it would return to normal.
Mostly During heavy Movement and animation phases.
I ran GPU-Z as well as MSI afterburner in the background to see what was going on, and at the time of the freezing, I could see that the GPU load would drop to 0%. Temperatures would all be fine (Sub 75).

Keep in mind I am running Win8 (shudder).

The only thing I could think of is the HDD could be going to sleep?
I did some searching, and found some info about an "Intellipark" feature on some Laptop HDD's.

Do any of you think this might be causing my issues? Or is it more likely the GPU?

    Thank you all in advance!!

Nvidia Optimus was turning off 660M and turned on your iGPU Intel HD4000.
    Reasons?
    - high temperature or
    - bad drivers

    What latest Nvidia drivers exactly?

What you may try? Go to Nvidia Control Panel and set to use only 660M for WOW which will help.
However good drivers shouldn't give that problem.

Temps are Fine, Drivers are 306.97.

Also had already made a custom profile for WoW - Same issue.

Also not a net lag issue, as net lag in WoW enables you to run around etc but the people around you run on the spot.

The issue I keep thinking comes back to this Wester Digital feature on their HDD's called Intellipark.

Hahahaha Yes, I have asked for a nice 512 SSD for Chirssy from the missus. But from some further reading, it seems that it might infact be the WD drive.
The Intellipark feature is a APM fature designed for all Blue and Green WD drives. WD actually released a program to disable this feature or delay its park longer called "wdidle3" - a bootable DOS program ( http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1367904) - walkthrough on how to use. (USE AT OWN RISK)

Also this explains the reasoning behind COD being fine and WoW not.

COD being more intense, accesses the HDD much more often, and doesn't let the HDD go into the "Park" mode. VS Wow, who will load a whole area or instance to RAM, then SWAP out when entering a new area. (HDD would go unused for 10 - 60secs at a time)

WD themselves said Intellipark will only take "about 1-2 secs" to come out of the Park state, but in a game, as you know, this can be game breaking.

Gonna do this now, and will let you all know, hopefully this might help anyone else having similar issues.

Never mind, forgot I had to change the BIOS to legacy boot, not the new HWSEI one (or whatever its called). Going to test now.

    UPDATE:

Got some play time during my lunch break, seems to have fixed the issue!!!
I will try and do some Raids or something tonight to see if it fixed the full extent of the issue.,

Have maybe an unusual question re: GE60.

Its pretty much the idea notebook for me save one detail and that is the amount of glossy plastic ..especially on the wrist rest, which should be a place free of glossy easily marked material for obvious reasons. I have figured out a way to get around this issue in a simple creative way but need to know if it will work or not. Planning on using some appropriately sized screen protectors ether side of the track pad (or just on the left side) to cover the rest where the base of my hands/wrists will sit.

Just seemingly one thing in the way of this, that specification label, is it easily removed with no gunk left behind ? also think I would have an issue with anything as thin as a screen protector stuck to the wrist rest contacting the screen or causing it to be unable to close ?

@S1nn3r I would use smth like this cool looking stuff but I would mix white and black and had a hard job to calculate size and cut so it would look really nice.
P.S. Just search on eBAY carbon "color" vinyl or smth like that.

I dont think something like that would work out, it has sticky stuff on the back which would kinda defeat the point of putting something on the wrist rests to stop it from being marked. Mystifying to me why MSI put a nice matte screen on a well priced gaming notebook that is not super heavy/thick (which is exactly what im after) and then goes and spoils it by glossy overload on the plastics..

Hello, I bought my GE60 a few days ago after researching around a bit and so far I am loving it, however I have a few questions which if somebody(s) could answer I would much appreciate it.

Firstly there are a few sounds I believe are being emitted from the HDD (Western Digital WD7500BPKT-22PK4T0), one is a occasional clicking- which searching this thread is apparently perfectly normal. However there is another sound which is more like a *gshhhhh* sound very often(once per second perhaps though is quiet for some small periods), a bit hard to explain, kind of like gears grinding softly perhaps. My guess(hope) it its the HDD being accessed and perhaps with my old desktop which had loud fans I just never noticed HDD"s did that. Anyhow if anybody has any suggestions about that it would be greatly appreciated, as long as I know its normal and nothing is wrong it doesn't bother me, its the worrying that something is wrong that does bother me. My guess is based around the fact that when running a virus scan, which should be maxing it) the HDD emits a constant sound, replacing this sound.

Secondly as it is full HD on a 15.6" screen everything is quite a bit smaller than I am used to however I have connected my old desktop screen to it and after fiddling around with some settings size isn't an issue on that screen, though it still is on my laptop's screen as I cant "make text and other items larger or smaller" specifically for one screen, it seems to only be able to apply to both. I was wondering is this just something I have to get used to? I have installed a add-on for firefox (nosquint) which I think has solved the issue within my web browser.

EDIT: I would just like to say I kind of like the glossy plastic :p

They spoiled keyboard and plastic case on purpose. Well at least they did not do the same internally. They don't want this cheap laptop compete with their more expensive one. Only thing they need is to make it the best of all on it's shell. Which is slightly above 1000$ and slightly above average specs.

When I do carbon vinyl mod I will show photos :p

    Hello,
I know that it was said many times before, but i wanna ask to be sure:
    1) Does GE60 0ND (with GTX660M) definitely have mSATA slot?
    2) Is mSATA disc ADATA SX300 XPG a good pick?
    Thanks!

Think I may look over at the GX60, less shiny plastic but thicker/heaver. Does have better GPU and Win 8 as standard and If I pay a premium I can get one with Blu Ray/SSD SuperRAID though..

it totaly depends on what you are planning to do on your laptop. The Ge60 comes with i7QM option where the GX60 `only` has an A10 APU. Both have theire own advantages but i can´t disagree with you that the GX60 is a beast

nope it doesnt. I got one from another part of the MoBo still need to replace it. You got to buy your own. I had some trouble tho putting it into place there was already a cable where the mSATA needed to go.

I wouldnt know which one is better they are both respected brands. I´d avoid OCZ if you can

    1) Yes it does, furthermore it's SATA III.
    2) The SX300 is pretty much the fastest mSATA SSD out now, so it's a great pick (however it's not the cheapest obviously).

    Hi all.

I have the GTX660m version of the GE70 with Windows 8. I am having some problems with Minecraft. The first week I had this computer I pulled 130-170 FPS but now (a week after that) I get 30-80, but it's usually 30. If anyone has Minecraft and the same version of the GE70, could you please do some benchmarks? Full settings, no texture packs, OpenGL off, no mods. Thanks.

Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone might be able to offer some advice. I purchased a GE70-0ND from Powernotebooks.com in September. I had been having some odd, random disconnects from my wireless router from the get go. I would have to reset the adapter and all would be fine. Just recently FIOS came to my neighborhood and I jumped from a pathetically slow 3.1 Mbps to a promised 50 Mbps. Although much faster than my original speed, my laptop isn't getting anywhere near that throughput. I am getting around 20-25 Mbps. Wired, the speed is 58+ and my son's Macbook Pro also achieves 50+ download speeds. My other son's old slow HP laptop gets 40+. Additionally, every day or so, I lose connectivity with the router and cannot reconnect without resetting the router first. None of the other wireless devices in my house have experienced any loss of connectivity. All signs point to something being not quite right with my wireless adapter.

I tried all the optimizations of both the adapter and router but nothing has made much of an impact. I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers to no avail. I am running out of ideas. Has anyone experienced anything similar? I searched the thread but did not see anything.

Well, the only probable cause then is the wireless card hardware itself. I have 25 Mbps internet and the laptop maxes that out, as you said, but it might simply not be as good to be able to handle higher speeds. You can try checking if your router is set to 'n' mode (if all your other devices support it) as if it's on universal (b/g/n) the speeds might be slower. If that doesn't help the only other option I can think of is to buy a new wireless card; you can get a 3x3 Killer card for around 50 bucks.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I have turned off mixed mode on the router and am currently running strictly N mode.

The card is the Intel Canyon Peak Centrino Wireless-N 135 that came with the system. I have the latest driver version from the MSI site. I tried to run the Intel detect and update utility. It identified the adapter and software version (15.1.1.0 ) alright but gave me a message that the driver was unidentified or unsupported. I downloaded the latest driver from the Intel site (15.3.1) anyways and ran it. I got a graphic of something spinning and it vanished after a few seconds. Apparently it installed the new driver version (15.3.1.2). I ran a couple of speed tests and the throughput seems to have improved to around 35 Mbps, but that still seems slow to me. I'll watch it to see if the connectivity issues resurface.

It's been a while since I've asked this, but since the laptop now has some market penetration behind it, rather than being brand new I figured I'd ask again. Perhaps someone has the info now.

Is it possible to disable the Hyper-Threading function on the i7 3610QM on this model? Perhaps it's not true for the Ivy Bridge series, but disabling HT on the i7 Bloomfield series reduced heat/power and allowed for more OC headroom. Almost none of my applications actually make proper use of HT, so it wouldn't be much of a performance detriment to me. I didn't see an immediate BIOS option for it, so I'm assuming not, but it never hurts to ask.

That aside, I'm loving this thing. The GE60's quite the little beast.
