I am having a weird issue. The area beneath the touchpad gets really hot. So hot that touchpad is uncomfortable to use. Is it because of memory? Also can somebody direct me to the links to latest drivers? I saw just a BIOS update on MSI but it is only for Windows 7 now.

I was wondering if anyone could help me.

I imported the GE60 version with windows 8 the i7-3630QM and GTX 660M about 3 days ago from ebay. Since using it in those 3 days I have been faced with many slow downs followed by blue screens, mainly the memory dump crash.
I have managed to fix it twice, the second time being just before writing this post. I don't know what exactly is causing it but it seems quite frequent! I would like to restore Windows 8 but I do not have the disk and I cannot download nor find the product key for Windows 8 basic.

Any help would be much obliged as I am due a new msata in the next coming days but do not want to copy the current OS to it due to all the problems :/

Check RAM at first. Take away 1 stick and work with another one. If you continue facing with these problems then exchange sticks.
You also can use Memtest86+ on USB stick if both sticks fail.

P.S. Code must be written on the bottom of your laptop if it came with Windows 8. There are only Classic (ex Home Premium) and Professional you can use.
You also can update from Windows XP, Vista or 7. Perhaps it will cost you less money.
IMO, throw away that Windows 8 and use Windows 7 if you can.

Thanks for your swift reply! Appreciate it.
As it's a brand new laptop i'm hoping it isn't that, i've already had it running again all day without a blue screen then all of a sudden it happened again, cause is unknown. Somehow managed to fix it again by messing with drivers etc.
I'm currently upgrading drivers from the msi ge60 webpage so i'm hoping that fixes things.

Unfortunately no there is no Windows 8 code anywhere, it comes with it out of the box and I have read that the codes are now embedded i the BIOS? I would really love to somehow fresh install 8 again if possible?

    New laptop from ebay? Extreme...

Yes, codes are in the SLIC in the BIOS. Possibly you are able to install Windows and it will not even ask you for code. I say possibly because I haven't done it on MSI.

All you need is to find msdn distributive. Good luck. Don't forget to compare checksums after you download iso file. You can find legit checksums somewhere on msdn.

Yes I bought the msi e60 brand new from over seas at the beginning of the week as it seemed perfect for the price range I was aiming for. Yeah I read that it can automatically detect the product key but I also read that isn't always the case :(
So if I visit msdn I will be able to find it's OS on there? Thanks for your help!

You can try. But I have no idea. For Windows 7 it was not possible while downloading from other sources was not very legitimate. However everybody doesn't care on stupid rule of cheap Microsoft and people downloaded from trusted sources before links were deleted from thread on NBR :(
I don't know about Windows 8 but that's why I said Google and checksum check.

Unfortunately it's just too complicating trying to get hole of Windows 8 OEM as there is no guarantee it will work via the BIOS key. I do have another question though, I installed MSI Afterburner around about the time of the first blue screen. I removed it along with re installing drivers during this mornings blue screens, could Afterburner be the culprit?

afterburner is a tool used for tweaking the GPU ... your issue, as James has pointed out, seems memory related. Have you tried the tests hes suggested. Even sometimes removing the stick physically and reinserting may help. Memtest is also a very solid tool

Is anyone using Win8 on the laptop? I want to format my W7 system & I'm thinking about upgrading to 8. I see that the MSI website does not list as many utilities for W8 as it does for 7, namely the s-bar.

    Thoughts? Comments?

I seem to have fixed it, no blue screens since yesterday. Updated all drivers, firnware and bios to the latest. Afterburner was removed just as a precaution but may re install that later.
As for the memory test I may try it later of if it re occurs but the memory seems to function fine as the laptop seems to have no issues with using both sticks while playing games in ultra settings.

The temperatures are fine for both the components you mentioned. I am not sure if the heat is because of the hard disk or memory. I haven't opened the bottom panel 'coz I didn't want to get the "warranty" sticker torn. Any ideas? I can post screen shots of temperatures if you want. I am actually thinking of RMA.

Well after a few days and games I guess Win8 is running as well as, if not slightly better, than my Win7 setup. This may have something to do with the fact that I also switched my SSD to the inside & took the HDD to the optical slot. 6GB's vs 3GB's.

The S-Bar is replaced by SCM & works well.

I also updated the BIOS & cannot report any faults. The HDMI issue I was having is now gone. Not sure if it was the BIOS or drivers, but I did try new drivers under W7 to no avail.

Basically, if you are going to format anyway then you can switch without any worries over comparability. I installed a classic start button app & I am very happy with W8. Not sure how much I would pay for it though *cough* cough*.....

If you're in the EU you can take the sticker off as there is regulation against stickers voiding the warranty of an item. (I've called them just to be sure and they said I can do it no problem.)
If you bought it from a custom laptop builder I'm also pretty sure you can remove the sticker as they allow for modifications.
In any other places just try to call support and ask if you can, it's always worth a try :p. In my opinion MSI puts them on their laptops just to scare people off from opening them anyway.

If you break the sticker then warranty is only for 1 or maybe 2 years starting from manufacture date unless you register the product on site. In that case you get everything including Worldwide warrantyf from the date of purchase.

To everyone that already owns a GE 60/70, I'm planning on purchasing a laptop in the summer and I've come to decide that I'm most likely going to buy the GE 60. Do you guys recommend me waiting given that there might be a newer model, or "good idea"??

Also, I'm just a little worried about the mixed reviews that I've been seeing about the temperature of the CPU/gpu. Is it the case that msi's stock consistency isn't good? Like the possibility of getting a defective one is high?

    Thanks!

It's a good buy if the price is right. Relative thinness/lightness, decent horsepower, generally well priced.

I'm actually going to be selling mine soon, and if you've seen the threads I've made, you can see the unspeakable things I've done to mine.

It's the thinnest and lightest laptop in it's performance category. Because of this the build quality is not the best (full plastic) and the cooling system isn't outstanding either. It won't overheat or anything, but if you plan to overclock more than just a bit, a thicker laptop might suit you better.
Also the summer is still very far and there is always a newer and better piece of hardware. By that time probably the GE60 will be updated with a Haswell CPU and newer GPU as well.

Hello. I just got my GE70 0ND yesterday. I put in the drivers CD and I got a few errors. Everything seems to work for the most part but my mic is very low. Does anyone know what could be causing the mic to be low?

Hm, I'm not sure, mine doesn't have this issue. Not sure what could be causing it either.. What you could try to fix it is to lift the laptop up over your head or for a permanent solution maybe just put some books under the machine, that would definitely make the mic somewhat higher.

Interesting wording and joking aside, my mic has low volume too in Skype or on Steam voice chat, I guess it's just crappy. However in some other apps such as Mumble or Ventrilo it's perfectly loud and clear.. So my advice is: just try a different program, it might work better with this mic.

So you think it's just a crummy mic? I bought this laptop specifically for gaming so this news is troubling. I thought maybe it was an out of date or corrupt audio driver. In Steam chat some people have told me my mic is very low.

What do you mean by 'trying a different program'?

Yep, mine is very weak in Steam chat as well, however in Mumble or Ventrilo it's loud and clear (after setting it up correctly). So what I mean by that is just use Mumble instead of Steam voice chat and carefully configure your mic in the setup process after the first startup.

Why not get a headset? If you use your built in mic you get echoes. Yes i also noticed my mic was kinda low but i think thats because i use a external keyboard which puts me 3/4s of a meter away from the laptop.

    hello.

the thing is, i screwed things a little bit. to avoid to tamper the sticker of my warranty, i tried to open ge60's back a little and wipe the fan from that little opening, but i broke one of its blades. i guess, at this point, my warranty is already void. so, do you guys know where can i buy a new msi ge60 - 0nc fan? or, is it possible that warranty is not void at this point?

why i did this was actually another problem. sometimes, weird noises were made by fan, which were like, fan was hittin something. that's why i just wanted to see what was the problem. yes, i shouldn't do that, and i shouldn't try to clean the fan like that but happened. now i have to fix it. if you help me, i seriously appreciate it.

break the sticker. Exchange the fan. warranty becomes valid again from the date of manufactureunless you sign your laptop on msi site.
search fan on ebay or ask majstermsi

    Hello guys!

I'm new here, and I've been reading some info about SSD install in the thread to try to solve my problem, but now I'm stucked. I got my GE70-0NC less than a month ago, and this week I received my SSD (Transcend MSA720 128GB). The seller told me he got from another MSI notebook, so I wouldn't have any compatibility problems.

The thing is that after I sticked the SSD in the msata slot, the BIOS recognized it, but the Win8 not. As this SSD came from another MSI notebook, I even could boot from the SSD, but then, the W8 couldn't recognize the HD.

Then I recovered the W8 to the SSD using the DVD's that I burned with MSI Recovery. It worked normally, but still couldn't see the HD, even in Disk Management.

In the BIOS, I can see that the HD is still the first SATA, the SSD is the second, and the third is the DVD-ROM.

Could anybody help me to use the SSD as main and HD for data? I can't format the HD, because I can only access it through W8 when I boot from it. The HD has the usual partitions - OS_Install (C :) and D: for Data, and the other small partitions for recovery.

    Thanks a lot!

    Alexandre

    Did you try clean-installing Windows?

Also, try removing the HDD and then installing Windows with only the mSSD installed. The machine might be getting confused with two OS partitions.

On a completely unrelated note, my Forge'd GE60 is up for sale, if anyone's looking.

If you turn windows on with only msata and then hot plug usual hdd then it will work, true or false? Can you boot msata alone at all?

Go to bios and turn off safe boot and turn on Legit bios instead of uefi.

When I wanted a spare back cover I emailed the MSI support and they gave me the contact information of their parts department and told me it's possible to get one, but I would need to order through a company as they can't serve individual people. (It can be any company like the small startup of a family member.)

Well, there is no important information on it, so I'm pretty sure you can.

Well, first of all, thanks for your replys. After trying a lot of solutions, in the end, what worked was downgrading the AHCI driver with the one from the CD from MSI.

Working very well now, I just have to format the HD! The SSD is really fast, although this issue, it was really worth!

I have a question about updating my drivers. I'm unfamiliar with what I have and don't have. The drivers for my computer are here:

    http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GE70-0ND.html#/?div=Driver&os=Win8 64

But not everything matches what I have. For instance, on the Web site it says "Intel HD Graphics Family_Intel Ivy Bridge" but in my Device Manager the closest that comes to that is "Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000". Is that the same thing? The driver on my computer is from September and the one on the Web site is from January, so is that the latest driver or are they different things? Are all the drivers on that site apply to my PC? I'm specifically looking at the more recent updated drivers. The driver for my graphics card, for example, I know is out of date because I've already updated it through Nvidia itself, but what about the other drivers that were released from October to now. Can I just install them or do some of them not apply to my PC?

    Hi guys!

I bought a notebook MSI GE60 with Windows 8 and I want to change to windows 7. But on the MSI wrote that I can’t change BIOS if was already installed for Windows 8.
“...- If the notebook you purchased has Win7 Bios installed, please DON'T attempt to update using Windows8 bios (or vice versa). Failure to abide may result in bricking your system...”.
    http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GE60-0...BIOS&nbos=win8

Can you tell me please if there is a way to flash Win 7 BIOS on the notebook with Win 8 BIOS already installed?
    Cheers.

[IMG] just got this pic from the internet, it looks much cleaner on this messy design of the GE60 with thousands different patterns lines and materials. I think without the sticker the design comes better out

I have a question about warrenty tho. I have heared lots of troubeling messages about the warrenty. I have heared you arent even alowed to open in and remove dust etc. In that case i will be screwed when it comes to warrenty. Does anyone have experience with warrenty from MSi?

I am green in this subject and I couldn't find answer.
I want to change original MSI bios from one to other version. But they say: “...- If the notebook you purchased has Win7 Bios installed, please DON'T attempt to update using Windows8 bios (or vice versa). Failure to abide may result in bricking your system...”.
"bricking your system" mean Windows or BIOS. If BIOS is it true? There is no way to Change it?
    MSI GE60-0ND

    Thanks

@badamecki, There are 2 versions of BIOS on the official support page in BIOS section. 1 is specified for Windows 8 only. You can't use it as it will brick your laptop.

I'm finding that the DVD drive on my GE60 will occasionally produce very loud sounds, is this typical?

How can BIOS be tied to different versions of Windows?
I think maybe the installer has changed to support the new Windows?
Or the system that ships with Windows 8 has a different BIOS chip?

    Through SLIC code for example:GEEK:

    ATTENTION OWNERS!

Windows 7 Drivers for Intel HD4000 for MSI GE70 and for GE60 are outdated! And it is for Intel iGPU which is known for its bugs and artifacts because of driver's quality!
Even more! Manufacturer force us to move to Windows 8 in absolutely scam way! They updated Windows 8 drivers and called them as Windows 8 drivers ONLY while they fit to Windows 7 OS as well!
    http://msi.com/product/nb/GE70-0NC.html#/?div=Driver&os=Win8 64

Here you can see Date and Version of video drivers for Windows 8.

Here you can see Date and Version of video drivers for Windows 7.

And most important is that there you can see description of so-called Windows 8 only drivers where it says that they are made fro Windows 7 too!

I will create angry letter tonight and post it here so everyone could send it to MSI.
