My overclocked settings don't stay. I started with +5 on the Core Clock. Ran Crysis 3. Clocks max out at 835.

Tried it with both nv inspector and MSI Afterburner. Any ideas?

Optimus tends to gimp FPS in CS:S even with a 680M and 3940XM.

I bought my GE70 on July 2nd, a few days after it came out. After 4 months (Around November) the same noise started happening. There is no way to buy parts for GE70's. I paid the $50 for shipping and shipped it because there really are no other options. Just letting you know, it was the CPU fan. It made a grinding noise, and when it stops grinding, it means your fan has stopped moving. There would be almost no airflow when it stopped grinding (I was playing Skyrim at the time and my temp shot up to 100C) so please don't use your laptop until it is fixed.

Also, now my HDD is making a clicking noise on and off the past few days, I really hope I don't have to send it back in. Not to mention my WIFI takes 3-4 minutes to connect to anything, from my router to my buddies Cisco to my Android's hotspot. Like .

I just got the GE70 0ND-212US from my local computer store as a replacement (woo a extended warrenty paying off) to my GT-780R-014US and (they upgraded the ram and hard drive so would be equivilent) but i have been attempting to play tera online running it at upper mid range and i only get 10 FPS on the game while i play yet with the older model i was getting 20-30 fps in game even when i was running it on max. would this be normal or not?

Also when i restarted it to install updates it took 30 min to do the restart then 40 min to do the configuring windows. I googled that and other people are having that issue as well.

I am thinking about bringing it in to my store since i got the laptop on monday but any ideas of what my issues could be or if this would be normal for it?

    Thanks

    Hi everyone,

It seems like there are tons of problems that people keep on mentioning (e.g. fan noise, heat level, graphics not working properly, dead wi-fi, dead pixel for screen...). I was just wondering if the quality of MSI products are that unstable...?
I've been looking at all sorts of laptops that are capable of some sort of gaming for the past few months already, I plan on buying one in approximately June/July. I was pretty much determined that GE60/70 would be the laptop that I'm going to purchase, but there have been so many damn posts about how people are having problems and stuff that makes me hesitate.

Is there any way to check with the local retailer that the laptop is functioning perfectly fine before actually purchasing it?
Do people suggest that I stick with my original plan and purchase the MSI GE60/70?
Or should I go with something less expensive like an Acer Timeline M5 ( I think that's what's it's called), where it's capable of a bit of gaming, and is light?

    Thanks a lot!

IMHO, based on my recent experiences with GX740 and GE70, It's not worth it unless you are getting a REALLY nice deal (meaning no other brand can give you that kind of power for nearly as low of a price).

The only reason I chose MSI is for 1) the price-per-performance. and 2) The 3-year warranty (only with GX740. The GE70 is 1 year for me).

Mind you, I find MSI support pretty terrible. They want you to wipe your data and waste hours of your time everytime you ask for help. Whether you are smart and have figured out that it's hardware or software doesn't matter to them.
They also only pay 1-way shipping for repairs. Which means you will spend like $30 every time you want to send it for repair. Once you do send it, the service seems great. Laptop comes back without problems (but again your data will be gone no matter what the problem is. And they require you send in the hard drive).

On the other hand, I don't have ALL the problems you mentioned with GE70.
    I only have:
    1) Nvidia GPU boost not working
    2) "Configuring Windows Features" every time that many people are constantly experiencing.
    3) Wi-fi acting weird (May or may not be related to... )
    4) SCM (for the Quick-launch buttons) crashes and malfunctions.

My advice, think hard if you are really going to be gaming everywhere, not just at home.

Thanks so much for your reply!
That's also something I've been hearing from other people as well (the fact that MSi support sucks).
I've also considered an alternate option of getting a desktop + tablet (maybe windows surface for the keyboard), but that would cost way more.

But I will take your suggestion into consideration.
    Thanks again!

pretty low most people will get 2600-2800... with my old overclock i could almost hit 3000.

You probably had something running in the background... or old drivers.

Nope, no old Drivers, nothing running in the background. No bloatware, no useless services running. All clean and raw.

So you think there's definitely a problem?

    Update:

Tried to overclock it using MSI AFTERBURNER & Nvidia Inspector

    New Benchmark

    MSI Afterburner img
    Nvidia Inspector img

Still disappointed, I can't seem to go over the default core clock 835MHz which can be seen on the maximum via "MSI Afterburner img"

Guys I've got overclock working. Someone just verify if it's the right way! Thank you... (Also its good to share this with everything, it works perfectly)

    1- Right click 'nvidiaInspector.exe' > Create Shortcut.
2- Rename the shortcut to "Overclock" > Add the line below to "Target:"
    D:\Desktop\nInspect\nvidiaInspector.exe -setBaseClockOffset:0,0,135 -setMemoryClockOffset:0,0,200 -setGpuClock:0,2,1085 -setMemoryClock:0,2,2700 -forcepstate:0,1
3- Repeat instruction number #1 and rename the file "Default Overclock", and Add the line below to "Target:"
    D:\Desktop\nInspect\nvidiaInspector.exe -setGpuClock:0,2, 835 -setMemoryClock:0,2, 2500 -setBaseClockOffset:0,0,0 -setMemoryClockOffset:0,0,0 -forcepstate:0,16

You may want to set those 2 bold values above, to what you see in: Nvidia Inspector on "Default Clock", as shown below:

Thanks for sharing. But my GPU Core clock is still stuck at 835 MHz. I don't understand your solution. Could you share the link where you found this?

i've actually found it myself, those are totally custom made parameters by me. Use MSI Afterburner to observe your clock. Try benchmarking GPU or something so it can use the GPU core to the fullest.

What version of Nvidia GPU do you have and what version of Nvidia Inspector? I haven't modified any of the BIOS or EEC, everything is sock and just purchased my laptop a week ago.

There are Windows 8 only MSI GE laptops which do not have Nvidia Boost working (at least 650M) , same as no overclocking possibilities available there. Prema was trying to figure out but no news there.
For Windows 7 or DOS laptops there are BIOSes with unlocked overclocking.search for links here. They are on Techinferno forum.
    I get 3060 pts max wit 3DMark 11
Physics score for CPU was about over 8000pts for 3610QM.

I used exactly your instructions and your OC numbers.
Tried Heaven Benchmark. Doesn't help. At 99% usage, Core clock stays at 835 MHz. Memory clock goes up to 2700 MHz as expected.

I'm not sure what you mean by "version". I have GTX 660M. And I am using nvinspector v1.97. Stock BIOS 80.07.27.00.05

    Temperature isn't the problem.

Also, I don't know why GPUz says stock Memory Clock 1250 MHz BUT NvInspector says stock is 2500 MHz? MSI Afterburner also shows 2499 MHz at load. I'm confused.

But anyway, OC didn't work on the Core clock. GPU Boost doesn't work either. This disappoints me.

Hmm, try using this for your overclock, only difference is the bold value:
    D:\Desktop\nInspect\nvidiaInspector.exe -setBaseClockOffset:0,0,135 -setMemoryClockOffset:0,0,200 -setGpuClock:0,2,1085 -setMemoryClock:0,2,2700 -forcepstate:0, 0

that should like force your clock from 835 to 1085 constant.

That was awesome! GPU Clock successfully reached 1085! (Got like 10 more FPS in Tomb Raider! :thumbsup :)

Man I need to understand what these parameters mean. Now I just need to figure out how to OC more properly and not brute force it at 1085 constantly :p

    Thank you so much!

BTW, it looks like my GPU Boost is working now? This image is taken after I applied "defaults" from NvInspector. However, there is no load on the GPU.

Just a tip, try not to include any voltage changes and don't go too high with the clocks, not that it can't, just concerned about the heat. :D How did you get the boost enabled? :D :D

I found someone asking this question with little replies so I'm going to ask it again. How loud should my laptop be when I'm doing small things such as surfing the web? Mine isn't exactly "loud" --the fan is a very slight hum, but there is another noise, and it kinda sounds like the HDD is moving constantly or something. Not unsettling loud, the fan is relatively quiet but another noise is irking me, is this normal? How are your laptops sounding?

Well my MSI GE60 sometimes when i browse for a while, the fan would just turn on, spinning and I do hear my hard drive spin every now and then. I'm assuming the reason why the fan turns on is because of the temperature, it tries to keep temperatures at a certain threshold. Other than that, i don't hear irregular lousy, throttling sound from my laptop...

I just got my GE60 and i'm using it like a full desktop at the moment xD because I'm not home for a while and lappy is really handy.

PS: I use headset, so laptop sound doesn't even bother me.

My ge60 is silent during browsing... fan kicks in while i watch video (processor isnt idling)

I do use a msata SSD and i turn off my hard drive after 1min inactivity...

And yeah the fan can get extremely loud when i play a very demanding game like crysis 3.

Fans kick in when the heat detected over a certain degree. It's normal. Laptop collect heat base on environment, internal power using, dust collected in heat sink, airflow below laptop.
It would be abnormal if it's always on just surfing web right at the beginning. You might want to vacuum some of the dust stuck in the heat sink area.

HDD move on and off base on background program, it shouldn't have much noise from it thou.

Just got my GE60-0ND on a special deal for £600.

Wondering whether to replace Win8 with Win7. Might give it a while to see how I get on with Win8.

Are there any major issues with reformatting the SSD (which has Win8) and installing Win 7?

    Cheers,

    Hey guys!

This isn't probably the right place to ask. I'm wondering if the MSI GE70 with the i5-3210m and GTX660m can handle Battlefield 3 at decent graphics, like atleast 1920x1080 resolution.

    Thanks!

I am having the fan issue, like this guy on youtube here:
MSI GE60 Fan issue - YouTube

Any ideas? I think that my fan just can't handle the very low speed, that the EC aims at. So my fan just stops due to lack of voltage. When the EC sees that, it will turn on the fan again, which will produce the sound on the video. Interesting though, when coming down from a period of at least 20 secondes turbo-fan-boost (cooler boost button), the fan will run quietly forever, but will not stop.

Anybody with a GE60 and the i7-3630QM CPU, could you run RWeverything, select the embedded controller and have a look at the fan speed value in hex and post it for an idle system, that has not come down from coolerboost. The value is in row "C0" and column "0D" (in the lower right corner). In idle, it should show something like "Ax" to "Dx" in hex. when running full fan speed it shows something in the lower 50s like 52 or 53.

    Thanks a lot,
    pm

Edit: Reflashing the EC went without errors, but to no avail. Resetting the EC is done every night, as the laptop has its battery and AC removed, but to no avail.

So, any help appreciated. MSI tells me to send the unit for RMA to Poland, but after reading a lot of bad reviews about their repair centre there, I am reluctant to send a brand new 2 weeks old laptop there.

Edit 2: Did someone upgrade the wifi on a ge60 to let's say an Intel Advanced N 6235 Card? Does both wifi and blutooth work in Windows 8? I read about problems "forge" had.

It will work with a combo of medium to high settings. This kind of info is widely available on the web. Search for 660m BF3 benchmarks.

I've had a similar issue (my fan turned off for 2 seconds, then back up to max immediately - no transition - for about 7 seconds). Searching around the web showed that basically noone could solve it and they had to return the laptop. I've tried everything they did and these didn't help (EC reset, taking out the fan multiple times and putting it back, BIOS update). The issue got fixed after one reboot where I took out my fan and put it back before booting, but there also was a Windows update that got installed. Now either the fan wire had some problems and I finally nailed it with the resitting or the Windows update fixed it..

@DaCM: Thanks for replying. Which EC-Version and Bios are you running? Could you do the readout with RWeverything on your unit, please! Don't worry, it is just a readout, no change. That would be awesome and help a lot!

No, Tera is not really a challenge for the GTX660M. It will run on max resolution with max detail without any problems. The real problem you are facing is the Nvidia Optimus technology and its game profiles that are constantly choosing the integrated graphics rather than the GTX660M. To fix this, you need to have some knowledge of computing. This can serve also as a general way to overrule any graphics assignment made bei nVidia game profiles. As I am translating from German, the exact wording you see can be different.

    Follow these steps:
    1. You will need these files:
latest nVidia driver: Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers
    nVidia Inspector: http://download.orbmu2k.de/download.php?id=51
    2. (optional) In case you have tampered with your nVidia driver before, I strongly recommend a clean install to fix any corruption. You will loose all your graphics settings with this step. Uninstall any nVidia related software using "programs and features" from within the Windows Control Panel. Reboot, then install the downloaded nVidia driver by choosing "custom installation" and then tick the box "perform clean install" from the next screen. Reboot again.
    3. Now go into Windows Control Panel again and open nVidia Control Panel. Choose "3D settings" on the left screen and make sure that on the right screen the tab "global settings" is selected. To the right of the dropdownbox, where you can choose your preferred graphics processor, there is a blue hyperlink called "configure updates". Click on it and a new dialog opens. In the lower half under "additional software" you will find a setting that is mostly likely be called "Game and Programprofiles, including the preferred graphics processor". This is the very culprit in mastering Optimus technology. As long as this setting is enabled, all your efforts in getting the GTX660M to run with a certain programm or game is resetted with the next update on the next day. It should be fine if you just disable this very checkbox, however I would recommend disabling all updates by disabling automatic updates completely on the very fist checkbox on that screen. Click ok and close the nvidia control panel, but don't close the Windows Control Panel yet.
    4. Now open nVidia Inspector and delete all Tera game profiles you can find.
    5. Lastly, go to the nvidia control panel again, choose 3D-settings from the left and this time open the second tab on the right, which is probably called "program settings". Click on "add" and search for tera.exe on your harddrive. Finally, set the corresponding graphics processor to the GTX660M. This will permantly fix all problems with not using the discrete graphics for that game unless you choose to install a new nVidia driver.

Let me know if this did not help...

It would be very nice if some people could help me solving my fan issue. Thanks in advance!

    Hello there!

I am having some issues with my GPU and I'm hoping that someone could help me.
Sometimes my GPU "loses connection" to my laptop. When having SpeedFan on it shows that the temperature on the GPU goes from 39-44C to 0C.
If I click up the nVidia control panel a message pops up saying that it cant find the GPU.
When the GPU "loses connection" the screen blinks appr. three times and then the "Turbo button" will always stay lit. This has happend twice to me
and it has been fixed by restarting the laptop.

Is there any way of fixing this permanently, or should I contact the store that I bought it from?

Hey guys, lately, my GE60-OND has been using alot of memory, without any programs showing such usage on the resource monitor.
It has been going up steadily from start-ups , from 30% to 75%, and if I leave my laptop on, it creeps up gradually until it hits 100% memory usage at which time, the thing freezes and I have to restart it.
Has this been happening with anybody else?
I can't find any programs using the memory, it is just being used.

Aha! turns out, it was the Killer E2200 Network Manager that was doing it... For some reason, when it shows the Network status as ' bad' it bugs out and uses crazy amounts of memory.
I disabled it on start-up and now the memory usage is normal.

    Hi,

I just bought a brand new GE60 0ND, however after turning it on for the first time I noticed a few issues :

    - The Turbo light is always on
    - In Windows' device manager the GTX660M's status is : "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
    - When I try to open the NVIDIA control panel this message pops up : "NVIDIA Display settings are not available. You are not currently using a display attached to an NVIDIA GPU.".

I'm using Windows 8 and I haven't install any programs yet on the computer. I updated Windows 8 and I uninstalled the old NVIDIA drivers then I did a clean install of the new NVIDIA drivers (314.22) but it didn't change anything.

I'm wondering if anybody knows a solution to my problem ? Otherwise I'll just ask for a exchange with a new one after Easter break.

    Thanks.

Dead GPU. Exchange and tell them they must send it to MSI. Perhaps seller will look for a noob buyer.
perhaps vbios is bad or else, not your problem.

Hi, I just got my MSI GE60 with GTX 660m.
I heard that official nvidia drivers cannot installed on it. Is this true? One of my fav things to do is installing the newest drivers when it came out, and play around with it.

Also I'm starting to read this thread from the beginning :D But could someone wrap it up for me? Like "things to do" and "things not to do" stuff.
I'm planning to a fresh win 8 install as I always do with new setups. Which "bloatware" must I OR should I install?

No. it is not. At least for Win7 you should install newest nvidia drivers from nvidia.
there is no bloatware for MSI. You misconfigured it with Sony or Asus ;)

BTW MSI released 514 BIOS update for win8 today, fixing GPU Boost problems along side with these fixes:

We e-mailed them to release it publicly after all they are installing that version at their customer support centers.
One particular member named Ghost on the official MSI forums attempted many times to make them release it on the web officially, now we have that update.

EDIT: IMPORTANT! I removed the official firmware page link cause That BIOS has a problem.
On the official MSI forum, moderator svet fixed the BIOS file, download from his post! It's at the bottom of the page.

I need a secondary HDD, on my GE70 but:

-a typical mSATA SSD has around 256GB storage. I need at least 750 more gigabytes
-because I already set up all my software and stuff, I prefer to keep the original HDD in place

So my question is this: Is there any way to swap the DVD drive for a secondary HDD? If yes, can someone tell me how to do it and what will I need, pretty please???!

    Thanks,
    Jennifer
