How often do you guys use compressed air to clean your laptops?
Will it help with temperature issues? If not, what is the purpose of it?

Cleaning dust off the heatsinks, heatpipes, and vents will definitely help with temperatures if you have a dirty machine. Having that stuff accumulate restricts air movement and basically acts as a blanket causing the heat to build up. Probably want to clean the system a few times a year or whenever you feel the temperatures are getting too high.

I have a big problem. Just today, my computer really started acting up (MSI GE60). My S-bar said it had stopped working, so I tried to restart my computer and when it started back up it still won't load the S-Bar or any other program for that matter. In fact, I am posting this from Safe mode because it was the only way to get online.
I don't know, but I feel like this may be a virus. I did get the computer to work briefly and then tried to restart again and same thing happened. While it was up and working I ran a virus check with Microsoft essential security and got nothing. Does anyone have ANY ideas? I do not particularily want to do a F3 restore and lose all my bookmarks, pictures, etc. -
You don't have backup computer? Did you use Windows update recently?
Copy all from Drive C to a folder on drive D and try to restore using restore point.
If it doesn't help then use F3 restore. -
Or backup your bookmarks and other personal files to a external hard drive in Safe mode and use F3 to restore. -
arctic mx-4 or tuniq tx-4?
-
I have dismantled and applied the mx4 paste and I have seen good results of -5 degrees to what I was getting previously.
That said my temps still too high, around 90 degrees on cpu when gaming for over 30 minutes, gpu is happy at about 75 degrees though.
There is no dust as its only around 4 months old.
Anybody have any other ideas? I already have a 3 fan cooler master pad. Can you get more powerful fans or anything?
Thank you. -
touch the heatpipe of Cpu. does it have the same temperature all over its lllllllllllllllllength? if not then warranty.

Sup all, any ideas what I can do about replacing the system fan in my GE70 ONC? I may have broken one of the fins while cleaning with an ear-bud & now the noise is worse than before I 'cleaned' it. I am currently living in Thailand so it's hard to order from the USA/UK.

I might be in the USA next year, so Xtopic can expect an order from me for a new laptop if this happens!
-
guys with those who have ge60 with i7, what your max temp on the cpu? @ stress test? thanks!
-
But that didn't stop me from using XM CPU, why? Because a) computer doesn't work as hard usually as it does while stresstesting. And b) I was testing special TIM material instead of usual thermal paste.
But what do you want to put that you ask this? Usual non XM will be fine with good thermal paste like MX-4 etc. and even XM will be fine, just don't set multis too high or use coolerboost or don't use it at 100% work for a long time. -

Well you need the increased TDP to do 3.8ghz anyway.

@james can i have a copy of your unlock bios, will it work on my 2670qm?
-
-
i have windows 8 installed, but my laptop has that xxxxx.10F bios, i bought it with no OS installed.
i cant OC my RAM, when i set it to 1600 it reverts back to 1333 when i check at cpu-z, and in the bios too. Maybe because i use a 2nd gen CPU? -
-
i checked custom, only the mem timings didn't revert back. The ram clock reverts to 1333mhz..
-
Could you record a video of CPU info in BIOS and then how you set timings and frequency? -

Hello guyz,
I went through the post on the msata description in this forum and thought you guyz can help me out with my query. I am about to buy MSI GT60-20C model from xoticpc which has 2 hdd by default as you mentioned. But I customized the primary bay in this model to msata adapter which will have 3x msata drives in the primary bay along with 1x hdd in the secondary bay.
My concern is:
1. Is it possible to do so practically as the told they will replace the adapter in the primary slot?
2. Are there any compatibility issues doing the same?
3. Do i need to reinstall the windows or bios setting if i upgrade any msata drive in future. I know if i am doing raid 0 i will have to reinstall but what if its not raid 0.
please let me know asap so that according I can converse and confirm with xoticpc...
Thanks a lot in advance... -
ameybhavsar, This is a thread about GE-eries laptops of 2012 year as written above and in every post. You re talking about GT-series model of 2013. Do you believe it is the best way to search for an answer? I believe that all will be OK, and you will not need to reinstall OS, just set settings in Intel RST Utility and in the BIOS but if you want to know for sure go ask in he proper thread or create your own one.

Hi all,
could you please help me with most intriguing problem that I’m having with my fan? A couple of hours ago my fan was being noisy (I’m guessing it was hitting its cover), so i cleaned him with compressed air, but when I put it in it stopped working.
So i turned my laptop on, fan doesn’t work, so I unscrew him again and if it stays a couple of cm away from cover it’s work just fine but soon after it touches cover (radiator, any metal part) it stopped working.
Anyone can please explain this to me? How can I fix it? -

Now, can someone show me where I can order a cheap replacement fan for my GE70? So far, this is my best option: MSI Genuine GE70 and MS 1756 CPU VGA Replacement Fan Module E33 0800412 MC2 | eBay
If anyone knows a cheaper seller (in Asia would be amazing, but I'm not picky) I would love to hear about it!
EDIT: I've tried the MSI service center in my area and they were useless. -

Okay, this is one of my many replies/questions to this thread, and I feel this is very important. I've had my laptop for nearly a year now, and I gotta say, I'm not very happy with the condition of my laptop. What seemed shining at first, really deteriorated into something I felt it shouldn't have. (DISCLAIMER, THIS IS ABOUT MY LAPTOP, YOU MIGHT HAVE/BE HAVING A BETTER EXPERIENCE). First my laptop developed/ came with a dead pixel. Unfortunately, one dead pixel is not covered by the warranty, and I would have to pay some 150+ US dollars to change my LCD (I know it is only one dead pixel, but when I am on my web browser it is easily noticeable). On top of that my PC began crashing at least twice a week which resulted in me having to refresh windows, causing me to lose all my save games, as well as MS Office, so I will have to repurchase it for school. On top of that my fan is loud as hell, and I haven't gotten a consistent response about how I should clean it, or if there is just a problem. My PC is running in low power mode+integrated card and it is still louder than my friends laptop while he uses his dedicated card. On top of all of this, The base (Lower part, not the screen) of my laptop is minutely warped in some way, or the rubber feet are messed up in size, as when my laptop is open, it slides very easily (One of the rubber laptop feet isn't making contact with the flat surface.) I don't mean to sound like a whiny baby, and even if I do, I still feel as if this laptop is nowhere as good as it should be so. So after this long semi-rant if you managed to read the whole thing...
How is your laptop now after a year of purchase?
Again sorry for the rant...
Cheers! -
Sorry to hear that yours is pretty much falling apart at the seams. Even if the LCD wasn't covered, have you considered contacting MSI for warranty support on its general function? Constant crashing and overheating is very not right for this model. -

Oh, hey. Another question.
Has anyone tried CoolLaboratory's Liquid Ultra (not so much the Pro) as a TIM in one of these, or a similar model? I ended up having to use some on an i5 3570K desktop processor, knocking the heat spreader off, cleaning out Intel's clay-like TIM, and using the Liquid Ultra. The results were nothing short of astounding with a 5C idle drop and a 15C load drop, and others have measured up to 30C drop. Of course, that's in no small part due to how bad the TIM job was inside a desktop CPU. I wouldn't expect such a massive reduction since the mobile Ivy Bridge doesn't have an IHS on it.
Still, it is a tempting thought...
Edit: Of course, this is assuming there's no aluminum immediately attached to the heat pipe rig! That would end...poorly. To say the least. -
In the end you always have 2 year warranty and at least in USA people re protected... cough-except-shipping-price-cough. I wrote general post of all disadvantages of this model... maybe I should ask super moderator or admin to put it in the first post again.
Anyway, You should read more about computers to become skilled enough to stop paying twice for MS Office and maybe start paying for backing up software like Acronis True Image. -

Dead pixels can develop over time with all displays even if they are shipped pixel perfect.
-
Well i bought mine in 6/22/2012 I use it 9 hours a night... 4 nights a week at work... had no problem with it (HDD noise that was normal after some research)...
Ill wait next gen to buy a new one...
Probably gonna be another MSI. the support tech was pretty easy to deal with... and they ship back "next day" in canada. -
The fan is a bit chintzy, considering the heat these can churn out with the 650M/660M. I'm considering looking into undervolting to reduce temperatures, as I hear the defaults are often higher than what it really needs to remain stable. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Well the 650/660 are pretty small cores actually, especially compared to the 760 and above, but bigger fans are always nice.

Hi, i just got GE60 2OE. I have question regarding the touchpad (Elantech). have been using Edge Scrolling since my past laptop. However, the GE60 touchpad does not seem to support it (only support 2-finger scrolling which I don't used to + don't like). Anyway to work around this? I am currently using factory driver.
After some Google-ing, Elantech does have Edge Scrolling in Menu but my GE60 does not have ):
Thanks! -

Hey,
I am hoping someone here can help me. My headphone jack was not working so I removed the realtek HD audio Manager and deleted the audio driver in the device manager. I reinstalled both and now the red light is on in the headphone jack. I know this means that it is set to use the spdif audio.
Originally my headphones worked when I plugged them in, what I need is to set the audio jack to analog instead of digital. Any idea how to do this?
Thanks,
Tom. -

Thanks for the quick reply. It didn't light up before, I'd checked because I had read about it being lit. It only lit up after I reinstalled the driver and the Realtek utility.
No, The Realtek utility doesn't recognise if I plug in headphones.

It's automatic so you don't really need to make any changes. -
I have a MSi GE70. that came packaged with Windows 8. I waited for the full official release of Windows 8.1 to upgrade and after upgrading I now have a watermark on the lower-right corner that reads
"Windows 8.1
SecureBoot isn't configured correctly
Build 9600"
I've seen in other forums saying it has something to do with the motherboard but being compatible or something. My version of Windows 8 is activated, and when I go into the BIOS to try to disable to enable SecureBoot it's grayed out. I can't access it. How can I remove this watermark? Any help would be appreciated. -
For secure boot you need full UEFI boot. Check your BIOS "BOOT Mode" setting. If set to "Leagacy" or "UEFI with CSM" then that is non compliant. If you set "UEFI" in the BIOS that should make the secure boot option usable.
If you are using "UEFI with CSM" then possibly you can change to "UEFI" and have secure boot enabled. If not then you may be stuck with the "SecureBoot isn't configured correctly" unless hacking some Windows resource file.
Secure boot on x86 (IMO) : Currently a method to lull people with a false sense of security while making things more complicated. -
The audio device is showing Realtek High Definition Audio, but it still doesn't detect when I plug in headphones.

Sry for this stupid question... How to update bios? I need to enable VT-x for VMware. Step by step guide is appreciated.
