What you need to do to fix your fan:
1. Take it out (obviously);
2. Drill a 2 mm hole on the other side right in the enter under the sticker (complicated);
3. Put 1 drop of sewing machine's oil (this kind of oil is the best one);
4. Put sticker back on.
You can see pictures here https://forum-ru.msi.com/index.php?topic=77029.msg225743#msg225743
Or just buy a new fan. It will cost you ~60$. You can search ebay for better deal (I bought combo fan+heatsink) or ask majsterMSI here.Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015 -

That almost sounds like the fins hitting the casing of the fan.

So I have a GE60 from 2013, with just the blue backlit keyboard and about a week ago I was shocked to see that the control key suddenly fell of for no apparent reason. I have tried to stick it back on but it won't stay. There are very small little plastic clasps on each key and the ones on the control key broke, so there is no way to keep it on. I don't want to send it in because I need the laptop and MSI said it would take roughly 25 business days to get it back which is way too long. I'm willing to buy a new keyboard, but I'm not sure how to put it on safely. If anybody knows how, the information would be much appreciated.

F--k! I have just got the same problem with the fan for the 2-nd time! And this time it died less than in 9 months! What A F MSI??? Really, What A F!!!!

I managed to fix mine. I drill a little hole, then found that smth is there which is harder to drill. That was some kind of metalized magnet which is GREAT because it stops your drill from drilling the important part of the fan which could break it (that's the fan from 2013-th year GE series, have no idea if it exists in our fan model). So I made that hole wider (before doing this I tried to put a drop of oil but it didn't pass through), took magnet away, used SYRINGE to put oil inside, then put back magnet (it is 1.5mm diameter and 0.3mm thick rounded shape), put that black sticker back and after 2 days (first day it was working VERY loud, looks like new oil destroyed older oil of ball-bearing) and now all is great. And it looks brand new anyway

I found that our touchpad Elan actually CAN use circle scrolling feature, Continuous scrolling feature and a dozen or 2 of other features! You need to mod the inf file and set 1 instead of 0 to enable some features.
SmartPadETD0300 UI Display Section (or ...same... (Win8)) means what sections you can see in Control Panel. For example on Windows 8 system peoplewhobelievetheyknowbetterthanus hied whole Edge Scrolling section! To reenable it set "EdgeScroll_Display,%REG_DWORD%,1" instead of 0
And SmartPadETD0300 UI Default Section holds all settings like what options to show in those sections and what options must be enabled/disabled.
Examples:
; EdgeScroll
HKLM,%ServiceRoot%"\Elantech\SmartPad",EGS_ContinueScroll_ShowItem,%REG_DWORD%,1
HKLM,%ServiceRoot%"\Elantech\SmartPad",EGS_ContinueScroll_Enable,%REG_DWORD%,1
; Circular Scroll
HKLM,%ServiceRoot%"\Elantech\SmartPad",CircularScroll_ShowItem,%REG_DWORD%,1
HKLM,%ServiceRoot%"\Elantech\SmartPad",CircularScroll_Enable,%REG_DWORD%,1
P.S. On Windows 8 and above after you modded inf file by Notepad you need to enter Boot options once (F8 while booting) and set "Disable driver signature verification" or smth like tat. -
Hello, I'm having problems with my GE60 battery. A while ago windows 7 started popping a notification that my battery may be faulty and needs to be replaced. Eventually my laptop wouldn't turn on when charging after a full drain so I went ahead and bought a replacement on amazon. The problem is that now the laptop won't charge, Instead of the blue battery LED I get a blinking red/orange LED and every time I try to turn on the laptop it shuts down inmediately. I have to remove the battery to be able to use the laptop at all (plugged to the wall but without a battery).
On the rare occasion I was able to turn on the laptop with the battery attached windows displayed the status as plugged in, not charging.
Can somebody help me with this? -

Hey there, I'll post this here too, because it's easier, safer, and cleaner than drilling, and cheaper than buying a whole new fan.
I decided to make an account to give someone a heads up if their fan starts doing that crazy buzzing sound, because I just fixed mine without drilling a hole through the middle or taking the fan apart (if that's possible).
Anyway, yesterday the fan evolved from the slight purr it started to have, to the sudden and scary loud buzzing. I had fixed this problem before on other laptop fans, but they were easily disassembled and oil could be applied directly on the shaft no problem.
Not the case with the Ge70. I separated the halves by bending the metal "fingers" with pliers, but couldn't get the shaft out of the bearing, and didn't have a drill on hand as the Russians suggested so I looked up other solutions, such as oil seeping, which is only possible if the cap isn't glued on. Well this is what worked for me.
I removed the stickers, and cleaned out the groove of all the adhesive around the black cap at the center of the fan with a needle, and applied a drop of sewing machine oil at the center, making sure the oil had contact with the groove. Came back 10 minutes later and applied another drop, making sure the oil that wasn't on the black dot or groove got cleaned up with a tissue.
I came back 20 minutes later and the oil was not to be seen, so this is what must have happened, the oil seeped through the groove and into the bearing/shaft center.
Spun the fan around manually to get the oil mixed up, put the other half of the case back on, plugged it in, ran the turbo mode, and no buzzing occurred even after shaking around the fan (which usually started the loud buzzing).
TL;DR Don't drill, just apply the finest oil you can find on the black cap at the center (after removing the stickers) after cleaning the groove, and wait until it's gone. Repeat a couple times and your fan should be back to normal. Mine doesn't purr anymore, and no more buzzing even if I suddenly tilt or swing my laptop. Good as new.
Hope this saves you some cash and time. -
Broom, could you add more pictures with arrows? Perhaps due to language barrier I can't get how that oil fitted there where I think you told should work.
-
Yeah sorry about that James but I can't take pictures.
I want to say that this isn't a permanent solution, since I posted, I've gotten the buzz once again, but only once. This is probably because the fan is damaged because of how many times I heard the buzzing before that (I wasn't very careful, my fault really). I've ordered a new fan, but this one will hold out until then.
So, James. Take your fan, place it sticker side up, remove sticker, find center of the fan (It looks like a button/cap/circle made of different material than the rest of the casing. Clean the gap (groove or crevice) between the case and this button/cap/circle. Place oil on the center dot and make the oil touch the gap (groove or crevice) and wait until it's gone. The first drop went pretty quick, the second took a while, and the third one barely went in.
If you need pics, just look at the russian ones that are available, but instead of drilling, just put oil on it instead. It has to be the finest (thinnest) oil you can find, because it has to seep (leak, drip, run) through the gap and into the bearing/shaft area.
I wish you the best of luck. -
Thank you Broom. I can't do this with mine because I have already drilled a hole in that cap under the sticker
By the way, Try to get syringe with oil an d put some between plastic fan and base metal right on those metal rails hied under plastic fan. That may help. My fan was buzzing after I oiled but in couple days that sound dissapeared. Looks lie oil was deleting older oil at first and then newer oil fitted everything. -
Anyone know what kind of screw it is for the mSATA3 slot in a GE70 2pc apache?
would be very helpful if anyone knows -

I have a MSI GE60. Just recently, the fan has started making a vibrating/humming sound. I took off the bottom shell and used some compressed air and cleaned up the interior good. The sound still remains. Is this a common problem with this computer?
I am hoping not to need a new computer, since it is only less than 3 years old. I am hoping some of you could help me troubleshoot this problem more. -

It was a quiet rattle-like sound. I hit the fan button to see if it stopped or made it worse. It got very LOUD at that point. That went on for about 15 minutes and then it just ceased. It is back to normal now. I almost feel like a wire or cord or something was rattling and when it got LOUD it rattled itself free? I really don't know.
I am scared to move it now, lol. Or hit the fan button again. I can;t get a sound recording now because it is gone. I am still sure something is off. -
Hello,
I recently bought an msi ge60 2pf apache pro .... I have password protected my bios (legacy) for security reasons but i want to know, is there a limit on the number of password attempts someone can try to unlock the bios ? Like will the system/bios lockdown if there are too many attempts?
Also, my laptop ships with 2mSATA ports and an HDD port. I already have 1 128gb SSD and 1 TB HDD inside. I want to add a second 256gb SSD. Will this affect the performance of the machine? -

So I'm not sure if anyone has had this issue but my laptop's fan keeps ramping up in speed and then going down every few seconds and I've realized the solution that many people have found is to update the EC controller for the laptop.
The problem is the firmware for the EC controller supports windows 8.1 and I'm already on windows 10 so I was wondering if anyone has an idea of how I can update the EC controller firmware with the updated fan table ?
Thanks in advance -

Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Also, perform EC reset afterwards by taking the battery out, and disconnect the AC adapter. -
Yea I looked at people's solutions to the fan ramping up for no reason and a lot of them just updated the EC firmware, but I'm on Windows 10 now so I'm not sure if I can update the EC to the latest release -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Windows 10 wont impact your ability to update firmware.

There is also a tool which temporarily changes the fan settings to the ones found in the new EC, but without the need to update. Check the last post on this page: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=162459.0 .

Hi. I tried to force an upgrade to Windows 10 on my 0NC. It worked, but no audio. Reverted back to 8.1. Has anyone had total success with W10 on the 0NC?
-
1. Win10 tries to install obsolete Card-Reader driver. Need to install manually latest one.
2. It's windows 10. It's one HUGE problem. -

I want to buy an SSD for this laptop. I read this thread and gathered some info, but I'd like someone to confirm that my plan will work:
-buy a Samsung 850 PRO 256GB SSD
-buy a 2.5 -> 3.5 HDD adapter
-remove the DVD drive and instead insert the existing HDD inside the adapter (the HDD is SATA 2 so there shouldn't be any performance loss)
-put the new SSD into the SATA 3 spot, where HDD wasKevin@GenTechPC likes this. -
-

With the 12.7mm optical bay to sata covered the plan works.
