I read that disabling turbo would fix the high temps, is it true?
edit: I mean turbo from CPU.

What power profile do you have the laptop on? Are you running it on balanced or high performance? Have you edited the power profile so that the HDD does NOT go idle when not in use? Change those things and see if it helps.
This laptop will work for gaming, but I would definitely suggest a decent cooler for it. I bought a CM Storm SF-19 and replaced the fans with Noctua-A14 FLX fans. Honestly, you could go with smaller fans (something like the NF-R8) because the cooler supports 4 fans. With the two fans I have in mine, the laptop appears to be staying under 50C even under decent load (such as playing D3 or Sanctum 2). I would also suggest cleaning off the old thermal compound and reapplying. I checked the old thermal compound when I took the laptop apart. There is barely any on the heatsink at all. In fact, the compound barely covered 25% of the CPU/GPU. -
Yes I did that at first but it didn't help. I reinstalled windows 8 and now it's working fine... probably a MSI -up in the config
high perf. when gaming
balanced in windows -
Just got my GE70 on Tuesday. After installing a 128GB msata and a better wireless card it is great. It gets hot, but so did my Inspiron 17R. Overall, it is a nice looking and well performing laptop. Wish I could get some updated graphics drivers though (installed GeForce Experience and it says the 311 drivers are the most current) . Lighter than the 17R also. A nice upgrade for me.

Hi soju. What wifi card did you buy? (brand/model). Try 326.19 Nvidia Beta driver.
-
I got the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235. Only uses 2 antenna, but still uses both 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4 -
try these drivers:
LaptopVideo2Go: Drivers
the normal nvidia drivers won't work (at least they don't here) -
Those of you having video issue (low fps*) have you set up a profile in the Nvidia Control panel for the game you are playing? I have noticed that sometimes the laptop switches to the IGP whenever a game is not using that much resources (login screens, menus, etc.) and will not always switch back over to the 765m. I went into the Nvidia Control Panel and forced it to use the 765m for all my games by setting up profiles for all of them. Since then, I have gotten 65-75 fps in most games (sanctum 2, skyrim on high settings, d3, torchlight).
Edit: Also updating video drivers does not always solve the problem. Unless there was a specific change (such as a physx engine upgrade or performance upgrade for your specific card) it is pretty much pointless to update them. The caveat to this would be if there is something wrong with the driver that MSI provides, which is likely. -
I just bought this machine, and I am kinda happy with it even though it gets pretty hot while playing bf3.
But I started to think about the future of this laptop, and what I would be able to play in the future. Would this machine be able to play PS4 or Xbox One ported games, and at what settings.... furthermore I cant seem to use the question mark and other symbols, but I think that's just because I have no idea how to alter some of the settings.
But for how long do you guys think we will be able to play on this PC at around high settings, how future-proof do you think this laptop actually is.
Edit. I am very new to laptops, but would you actually be able to swap the graphic card later on this model, or are laptops still not able to do this. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It's a mid range machine, usually 2 years of being relevant but you can never be sure and it depends a lot on what you personally think is acceptable FPS and detail wise.
-
It's normally not possible to swap a graphic card out of a laptop... only some can, but it's rare.
-
It's not rare at all. The reason these thin-profile laptops don't have interchangeable GPUs is because they need to solder the GPU to the motherboard to reduce thickness.
If you look at the GT series, they have interchangeable GPUs. -
Since when is the GT series mainstream/average?
It's rare at mainstream laptops. The GE series is still average the last time I checked. -
Just got my GE70 20E last week, tried for a few days to coexist with W8 but since I could not upgrade to pro even with my legit volume licence (and add to my domain) as well as the infuriating interface that Balmer is trying to face fsck me with...sorry...I digress...
So today I formatted the drive and loaded W7Prox64 as I had on my last GX70something but have had some serious stability issues. Cannot tel yet if it is ACPI or video related, only BSOD mentioned the power, but video is sometimes flickering on and off. I have spent almost zero time troubleshooting. I have loaded every driver and firmware I could find from MSI for W7x64, specifically avoiding the bloatware utilities, this machine came from OEM with almost 100 running processes...grrrr.
Anyway, as soon as I post this I'll start reading through all the pages and see if my problem has already some up (only read the 1st 3 so far) but if regressing a W8 machine to W7 is so painful this needs to be a new thread and stickified. If any kind souls would like to reply to this with advice that'd be fantastic
-
Just ordered one of these bad boys, got it for 1050 Haswell edition also
, to replace my Y510P( the thing throttles so hard I can't stand it) I'm hoping I made the right choice. Ebay is beginning to love me more and more
-
Well I gave up on running W7Pro64 on my GE70. Despite finding the driver support on MSI's site I just could not get it stable. Put W8Pro64 on it and all is well. Just cannot wait to get the RTM code for 8.1 so I can kiss metro goodbye.
-
Well 8.1 doesn't really get rid of Metro UI just gives you a half- start menu. If you want a start menu you can get aftermarket programs to do it, I know not the best solution.
I got used to just hitting the windows key and typing. Or using windows key +x to get control panel options etc. -
Can anyone explain why it is (not) important to update to the latest firmware? It's on MSI Global GE70 2OE under Firmware-tab.
It says:
Does this fix the overheating issue? Maybe by just disabling the turbo boost? Would be a bummer.
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: Since I already flashed the firmware update, I tried to find out for myself. So I downloaded Intel's Processor Diagnostic Tool and I can confirm that Turbo Boost is turned off. CPU load doesn't go further than 99% and max speed is around 2.38 GHz.
EDIT2: Speed reduction is noticable. Can't find a way to enable Turbo Boost. I made a topic at the official MSI forum ( https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=172116.0), let's see what they got for us.
EDIT3: All of a sudden it speeds up to 3.29Ghz again. Don't have a clue why. -
Thanks for the info.
Mine should be in today and I will take a look at it also. Can't wait
-
Hey all I just got mine in today, beautiful laptop. When repasting what did you all use? I have some arctic silver 5 here, but I know AS5 usually wants you to spread the paste over the GPU where others want you to do just do a bb size drop. What does everyone here recommend? Thanks
-
Did you reflash the bios? If you look on the MSI website, there is a different bios for windows 7. However, doing so stands the risk of bricking the laptop.
-
OK, so i got my laptop two days ago. So far i really like it because of the price, i got so many things such cpu, gpu and bigfoot. I counter many problems such as I couldn't update my nvidia software, but freshly installed window 8 solved the problem. also the laptop gets very hot when i do gaming, only the right side. just using internet i get temperature around 58c to 60c and when i play game like league of legend i get around 76c to 90c. If someone know how to lower the temp please tell me. when i did FurMark benchmark in 1080p, it throttle -766mhz i don't know how to fix that. I love the keyboard it feels like i am typing on the desktop computer, so far i have played League of Legend and aion on MAX setting, the frame didn't drop below 60 fps. People who had speaker problem should download sound blaster cinema software it will solve the problem, i notice that all four speaker works. i love the laptop hope somehow the heating problem get solve.

Hey guys, I have a disturbing question to submit to you pro's...
I should receive my GE70 2oE-070fr in 3 days.
I want to install win7 on an additional ssd.
But the thing is that I have no idea how to manage this operation.
Should I plug the ssd before first boot ? Then install win7 on it.
Or should I first put win7 on the hdd, then install my ssd properly and then do the switch ?
So what should I do on the first boot ??????
Please help the poor noob ; ) -
Hi. I´d recommend you a msata unit instead a ssd, since you have two free slots to mount msata discs. I have instaled a Crucial M500 msata (120Gb) for system. Left HDD for storage. I would also strongly recommend you keep using W8. I was also reluctant to use W8 at the begining but, I had some issues in W7. I have a W8 system with Start8 installed so I don´t miss the start key anymore and the laptop performs better than W7 (in my opinión). If you don´t have a copy of W8 just download from the internet (needs to be original, not cracked). Once you begin to install system will apply the key you already have in your system, so don´t be afraid; you have a clean and legal W8 running on your laptop.
-
If you don't like win8, you can go on ninite.com to download Classic Start for stuff like the start menu and other customizations! There's always ways to help improve the experience so you shouldn't give up on win8 just yet.
-
Honestly, it is due to the single fan design and a bad thermal pasting. I was getting as much as 94-95 degrees Celsius on my CPU when playing LoL. I then took it apart installed my Msata and repasted the CPU/GPU with AS5.
The old paste
Some close ups
Look at the air bubbles....
The paste was hard a rock on the cpu, the heatsink also looked terrible.
My pictures of the repaste did not come out well, i did a pea size dot on the GPU and a thin line on the cpu due to it being rectangular. Temps dropped about 9 degrees Celsius. -
Just wondering, where did you buy your ge70? Should I be worried about the thermal pasting being bad wherever I buy it?
-
Purchased from Fry's less than a month ago. And honestly I would say what it comes with will work, but any factory job should probably be re-done..
-
I don't have any heating issues anymore since I switched to the newer Nvidia drivers. When playing LoL it doesn't even become hot... I also tried W7, but it kept giving me BSODs all the time and the gaming performance was the same, I still get a lot of BSODs in W8 but It seems it's the **** killer E2200 driver causing them, updated to the latest drivers yesterday and hopefully they will stay away.
The WDC drive is broken as well though it's giving the click/chirping sound a lot :/ I should probably switch it for another drive cause warranty takes a lot of time -.-;;; -
How? Mine won't update.
EDIT: Our GE70s are only supported by beta drivers. This one is from August 20th and installs correctly. http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win8-win7-64bit-326.80-beta-driver.html -
Hi everyone. I recently picked up the MSI GE70 and I am loving it. However, I do have a few questions. I have tried to follow some of the advice previously discussed in this thread and others, but it might be easier for a direct response.
I want to install a mSATA in my GE70 to use for Win 8 + applications. I think I have a good idea of how to remove the back plate and install the mSATA, but everything following that becomes more challenging.
Questions:
What is the best way to transfer Win8 over to the mSATA and then format the HDD partition for use as storage?
- I have read some threads about cloning the drive, but they did not mention the software to do this.
- Alternatively, would it be easier to download a Win8 ISO to burn on a DVD and install a fresh copy onto the mSATA? I have read the Win8 serial enters the bios? Could I use a key finder to get the serial and use for my fresh install using the.ISO? Following that, would it be as simple as formatting the HDD as a storage drive afterwards?
Any explanations that are straightforward to follow would be GREATLY appreciated. -
how is the screen on this one?
the last msi i used had such a grainy screen due to the matte surface, it looked dirty. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
If you are worried a reseller can install a screen of your choice instead.

Hello guys, I bought an msata card and I want to install it but it didn't come with a screw so I have no way of fastening it right now. So I'd like to know if these screws would fit: Amazon.com : 24 Pack of M2 x 3mm Small Laptop Screws Black Zinc Laptop Machine Screw Phillips Head/ This screw is used on every make and model of laptop, Dell, Toshiba, Hp, Compaq, Ibm, Fujitsu, Samsung, Medion, Acer, Sony, Apple, Alienware, Gateway
Thanks -
There are two ways to go about this:
1) Get Clonezilla. This tool should allow you to copy your Win 8 partition over to the SSD. The issue is that the partition you are cloning has to be the same size as the partition on the new disk.
For instructions on how to do this, you can see this link here.
2) Alternatively, you can just reinstall Win8 on the new SSD.
Personally, if you are good at following instructions, cloning is preferred to a reinstall. Cloning means you do not have to reinstall system driver or mess with issues that can come from that. However, if you think you can might mess something up (which is likely), I would suggest you just reinstall Win8 on the new drive. It is much safer and if you mess up method 1, then you will have to do it anyway. However, it never hurts to try something new, YMMV.
Edit: In most cases, in order to clone a partition, you cannot be actively using it. That means you need a way to clone the drive while the laptop is turned off. If this is the case, make sure you have the tools to hook up the msata SSD to another computer. -
M2.0x3 mm is the standard for ALL laptops. Nothing can go wrong by purchasing the screws (as a system builder, I love having extra screws around). However, if while using the screw if at anytime it 1) becomes hard to screw , 2) Just slips in or 3) Goes in crooked, STOP! In case 1 or 2, it is the wrong screw. In case 3, it is cross threaded and you need to GENTLY remove it and try again.

All right thanks a bunch

hey does anyone know if there is any upgraded battery for the ge70 ..... I would really like to put in a better battery 4400 mah is really junk...... I found a website that sells quality batteries so they say lol..... for this machine they have an upgrade of a 9cell battery what do you guys think ? there are a few sites....
this one says 5200 mah
MSI GE70 Battery | Replacement MSI GE70 Battery Online Store
this one says 6600 mah 9cell
http://www.laptop-adapter-shop.com/battery/msi-ge70.html
what do you guys think any input is greatly appreciated -
Just ordered the force 1757(ge70barebones), as there's hardly any information out there. I plan on doing a full overview with pics etc. Any request?
The only information I've found is its made from slightly different materials on the palm rest which supposedly negates any heat issues. Getting the repaste job anyways. -
Hi guys,
I want to ask you about the heating issues of this computer. i´ve been reading some posts and apparently it reach high temperature during some stress. I ´ve seen many computers broken due to overheating. I don´t like too much the GX series due to lack of cpu and the weight but it seem has better temperatures. Thanks. -
Hello guys,
I had to return my laptop due to a broken wireless card, now when i finally got it back it seems like my cpu can't enter turbo mode anymore. Normally when I put it my laptop in high performance power plan it would go up to 3.4 Ghz which is the turbo mode but now it onyl goes up to 2.35 Ghz... Does anyone know why this is and if I can reenable the turbo mode? I doesn't really trouble me right now but I play games like BF4 which is pretty CPU intensive and I don't think it would hurt to have that extra power back. Thanks. -
I had the same situation. After updating some firmware, I went crazy about the missing turbo boost. Then suddenly it came back. From my experience the turbo boost only works when on AC power adapter (always recommended for gaming) and if it's charged above 70% or something.
-
I tried some things out and for some reason turbo mode doesn't work if your battery isn't plugged in, which is kind of stupid because I don't want to kill my battery by always being on AC power. So if anyone knows if I could enable turbo when there is no battery plugged in that would be great. And thanks to ProLen
-
No turbo with battery - if it were enabled you got perhaps 30 to 60 mins at best and killing your battery with extreme load.

Hi guys,
I bought an MSI GE70 a couple of months ago. (See specs below). Using Core Temp, when playing Crysis 3 on Very High settings the CPU reach temperatures between 94 - 97 degrees within 15minutes. The CPU runs at 3.2 GHz the first couple of minutes then drops to 2.4 GHz and stays there (with temps between 85 and 94 degrees). Cooler boost is on, with cooling pad and plugged in.
Is it normal for the CPU to reach up to 97 degrees? The keyboard gets very hot. If I put the CPU on 99% (2.4 GHz) temps are between 80 and 90 degrees.
I have the settings on very high with Anti-aliasing on SMAA LOW (x1) & ANISOTROPIC FILTERING on (1X). Frame rates: 17-21.

I recently bought a MSI GE70 2OE-002US and wanted to pass along the upgrades I made:
1. 8GB Elixer PC1600 SODIMM: Replaced with a Crucial Ballistix Sport 2x 8GB 1.35v Kit (16GB total).
2. 750GB Hitachi Travelstar SATA II 7200RPM: Added a Plextor M5M 128GB mSATA III and made it the OS drive.
3. Realtek RTL8723AE Wireless 802.11n: Replaced with Bigfoot Killer N-1202 Wireless/Bluetooth Dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n.
I did a fresh re-load of Win8 x64 after installing the Plextor. The 750GB Hitachi is now my data drive.
There is only one slot for a SATA II HDD unless you buy a caddy and replace the DVD ROM with it.
There is only one slot for a mSATA.
There are two DIMM slots. Ram is running in dual-channel mode now.
The WLAN card came from eBay. Bought the mSATA & memory from Amazon.
This laptop loads Win8 in ~5 seconds from power on. It comes out of sleep near-instantly.
If you have any questions, I'd be glad to answer them here in the forum. -
Hey guys..,,
new to the msi family.. bought a GE 70 about 2 months ago. But I had to change the fan in a month or so because it made a weird scratching noise.. but thats fine. But the most concerning thing for me now is the temperatures.. it goes 95+ some times during gaming and GPU goes to 77 or 78 but I guess thats pretty normal. I have the ivy bridge version of the laptop. With the gtx660m. My lap idles normally between 45 to 58.. which for me not that satisfying either. I recently played AC4 black flag. The temps were satisfying for me. CPU was 70 to 85 and gpu was 75. But I think due to a bug or something it got a thermal shutdown which freaked me out cuz I have never gotten a thermal shutdown. But when I play BF it goes 95 or 98 max and waves between 87 to 90. And GPU goes to 77 or 78. If you can help me in this problem it would be a great help. Thanks in advance!! -
GE70 or lenovo y510p. I cant make up my mind which to get. Does GE70 overheat alot?
-
the only solution for that is repasting with IC diamond
-
I just got a great deal on the GE70 2OE and am happy overall but very upset the Realtek RTL8723AE was included as I don't think it is dual band and can connect to 5ghz. I have a lot of interference on the 2.4ghz band and and 5ghz network is super fast. Can you provide instructions on how you swapped out the Realtek chip and put in the Killer N-1202 chip? Thanks.
