Once the driver is downloaded make sure you let it self extract. I had the exact same problem only when i manually extracted the archive. It would not install the vga driver. -
windows vista

yea. ive gotten everything but the video driver to work. using the main setup guide it just installs the hd audio drivers and when i use the display setup it says that theres no compatible hardware

And you installed the intel chipset driver correct? -
yes, but ive done all the updates after i installed vista, and ive installed the intel chipset correctly as far as i know? i ran the drivers, and nothing comes up in the control pannel about missing drivers. any other way i should check?

thanks for all your help. it is service pack one installed atm. in the control pannel the graphics card just comes up as a standard vga graphics adapter. theres no errors or anything in the control panel, which is why im starting to think its a hardware issue, its as if it doesnt even exsist..
-
is there anyway to see what graphics card you have withouth installing it? a program that can read that its there or something?
-

It sounds like either the video card needs to be reseated, or it has failed.
Contact Support to get it straightened out. Either way you will probably have to send it in for warranty repair unless you can try reseating it yourself. -
Well you have windows VISTA right?
On start up the Windows Welcome Center should tell you what GPU and CPU there is on a laptop, like this(below)
Go to Device Manager and make sure you did not disable your GPU drivers, try updating drivers from Nvidia's website? -
ive tried all that and it says standard vga graphics adapter.. im pretty much convinced its either broken/unseated or non exsistant in my computer because nothing i do seems to read that theres a graphics card aside from the standard vga graphics adapter. I called tech support earlier today from xoticpcs and they told me that because i did not buy the operating system from them, they can only help me with hardware issues and that this sounds like a drivers/software issue and that they could not do anything for me aside from telling me to go look at a couple forums to see if anyone else has had similar issues. After everything i heard about how great the support is, that kind of pissed me off..

lol, I would be pissed to.

I actually talked to them around noon, i just dint think about mentioning it till later on.
yea i told them that all was showing up was the standard vga graphics adapter, and they took that as i havent installed the drivers or some kind of software issue and told me the best they could do was go to techsupportforum.com for whatever reason, and look for similar problems.
on a side note, is the standard vga graphics adapter totally different than my graphics card or is that just what it shows up as if i dont have the graphics installed?
thanks for the help, pretty sure im going to be returning the laptop come monday.. -

As I said when I PM'd you with some suggestions earlier, if you want you can call us tomorrow. Ask for me and I can go through this with you, chances are it is something simple that was missed. -
thanks alot for the help +karma=]
-
so a big update on my graphics card!
i decided to pop the system open and reseat the graphics card because i dint feel like waiting a month for them to repair it, fired the machine up and it worked!=]
Thanks agian for all the help.
my next question is that since i opened up the computer and messed up the thermal lube on the graphics card, how vital is it that i put more on there? -
You should clean the old paste and replace with some new paste for maximum cooling performance.
-
Clean up all the old gunk and go with a nice thermal paste.
I found that IC7 works best but AS5 is pretty good too.
Great to hear you got your laptop to full power. -
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
-
will do! but i guess what i meant was why i am waiting for my paste to get here, is it ok to use the laptop or am i at serious risk of overheating and ruining it? thanks again!
any recommendations as to where to buy the IC7 the cheapest? dint see it on newegg.
thanks! -

IC7 does cost a little more than other paste but it is well worth it.
I have had the best results with it than with any other.
I would buy 2 tubes of it just in case you mess up.
Just to be on the safe side I would not use it until you re-apply the thermal paste.
But if you do get the itch DO NOT use it to play any games or anything that would stress the laptop.
Maybe just surfing the web but always monitor the temps with HWMonitor so you can keep an eye on them. -

It spreads with heat so you should be fine as long as you didn't wipe it off. Don't forget it is not old...it is still brand new.
-
hmm ok thanks for the advice!=]
-
so now that i have it up and running, what do yall consider the best driver for the graphics card? right now im just running the one that came on the cd.

Just choose 100M (notebook) and your O/S -
Any improvement over 185.85? Using XP.
I'm pretty forgetful when it comes to updating GPU drivers.
I've seen a 190.62 WHQL XP. Never tried updating because the current driver works so well.
Should someone update to every new GPU driver?
Or just go with what works well with your system? -

I guess it's time to update the drivers.
Which way is the right way, just download and run or remove old drivers first and then install? -
[email protected] Company Representative
If you do not uninstall the old, you will have the choice to do a rollback on the old driver. If for some reason you think the old performed better, details can be found here:

Thanks!
That's very useful. -
hey! so i just got my IC7 diamond thermal grease, however ive never applied this kind, and it seems a bit thicker than artic 5. the problem is it dint come with any isntructions on how or how much to apply, and advice on how to clean the old stuff, and how much to apply?
or a link to instructions, i googled around but coulnt find too much helpful
thanks! -
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
-
thanks for the link! after you apply it should u let it sit unused for any amount of time or is it ok to fire it up whenever?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
It is right there in the instructions:
"Place the heat sink on the CPU and press it down to spread IC Diamond over the CPU's surface, (Do not remove the sink to check the spread as it will introduce air into the joint). Clamp the heat sink and power up the PC." -
looked over that last part. thanks
-
There is no curing time with IC7 and get it's full effect as soon as you power up your system.
Can we see some temps? -
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
You can use IC Diamond right away after application however many users notice better results after 24+ hours compared to the first times it starts up.

specs include:
p8700 @2.53 Ghz processor
4 gigs of ram
stock drivers 179.65
running in turbo mode and high performance settings
only 18-20 hours after application, could improve?
the temperatures are taken after about an hour of web surfing/ homework (so the low temperatures are where they generally level out when not doing any intense work) and then 2 3dmark06 tests, dont really have time to sit down and play a few hours of games, so i figured that'd be a decent substitute.
whatya think? seems to be running pretty cool to me, hows it compare to everyone elses?
Also note that it was my first time applying this kind of lube and i may have put on to much or to little. -
Is there a place where you can get those barebones in Canada without it costing 50% more of the US prices(due to conversion, taxes & shipping)?
My brother is interested in this, but all we can come up with are ebay powersellers. -
http://www.directdial.com/GT628-419US.html
looked around for a few seconds for ya and thats the best i could find. could give the number a try.. -
Well apparently, the "genuine" GT628 isn't released yet in north America(so says everyone here). My friend did get one of those so-called "GT628s" but he got it from NCIX and they no longer sell it >.>
Also, that site indicates out of stock.
I think the "GT628"(or whatever that is) is the only thing we can come up with. Canada doesn't seem to have any companies carrying barebones and US retaillers are a bit too pricey once you factor in all the costs for shipping to Canada -
hmm well quite honestly im not the guy to be askin lol. but r id make a new thread under What laptop should i buy and specify that your in canada and that you want this or a barebone like this and see what other people come up with.
