You have to update the bios and firmware from the MSI site:
http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=135&prod_no=1881
Then make sure the system control manager is installed from the CD. -
do i download drivers?

Darth, he was asking GPU, not CPU.
90c is on the high side but within spec. However please be sure that your fan is working, and you could also try lifting the back end just slightly.
I would also check for dust although it is a bit too soon for that unless you have been in a dusty area.
Then, if it is still getting up above 90c on a regular basis, don't forget you have Lifetime Labor & 24/7 DOMESTIC Toll Free Support where you can get professional help. -
alright. yeah my fan is working. ill try the lifting. yeah after i exit the game the temperature drops back to 50 C withing minutes.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Then I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless you see it go to say 96-97c.
-
ok ill watch for that. Thanks Donald.

oops.
Mine's OC, and I have yet to see it hit past 80C -
darth,
how do you OC it ? any links that i can read ? i have turbo button on it and how far this OC will up compare to turbo button ? any temperature issue ?
find any disassemble info yet ? specially the screen...
thanx, -
Temperature does go up in TURBO mode but nothing to worry about.
You can expect a 10% to 15% increase using it.
Not sure what exactly you are asking but if you bought a fully configured model the Turbo mode comes factory installed with the latest BIOS.
At least mine did.
You can also OC this laptop using SetFSB but it's kind of wonky when using a QUAD. sometimes it works and sometimes it crashes.
You need the original BIOS using SetFSB. -
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
For the GPU, i use zotac firestorm, but there are many alternatives. The turbo button will only OC the CPU.
Unfortunately, i haven't found any disassemble guide yet.
If anyone has any info, plz let us know! A gt627 guide should be okay as well. -
Hey Rob I tried to install the drivers and Bios update to use the Turbo button but they said my vista version was not 32 bit when it is? Is there another way I can get the turbo button to work?
-
What settings do you use for setFSB? I'd rather overclock the CPU without having the voltages go up...
-

The bios and firmware have to be updated in dos mode, you cannot do it through windows. -
How do I do this? Btw Donald I have a question for you when I tried to connect to a wireless network for the first time it said there was no wireless network adapter or that the drivers were not installed. I was positive I chose to have a built in wireless network adapter, and I installed every driver from the drivers cd? If I do not have the network card what can I do to connect to a wierless network? Is there a card or a usb device I can use?

Do you have the wireless touch sensor turned on above the keyboard? (It should be illuminated) -
Hey Guys,
I'm new here and was wondering if you guys could help me out with buying a new Laptop...I as intending on buying the Alienware m15x but they just replaced it with a new one that is way too expensive. I have been looking for a week or so and eventually came to this one from AVADirect. First, is this a good vendor to be buying from? Second, are any of the objects in my configuration incompatible with any other things? Third, what processor is better, the X9100 Extreme that I have seleted OR the Q9100 Quad? Forth and Final, What is a Thermal compound exactly, I just seleted the most expensive one because it was only $20 more? As you can see, I am going all out with this Laptop... So if you know of any other Laptops that are 15.4'' and stylish let me know. Thanks In Advance!

DO NOT get a "solid series" ssd. It has some serious issues. Get any other ssd but that.
Get the q9100 over the x9100. -
Thanks a lot for your input but what type of issues are we taking about with the SSD?
Any more opinions? -
I don't think you should get Turbo Memory. In my opinion its just a waste of money.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Upon what do you base that opinion?
-
ive seen plenty of benchmarks that showed that turbo memory had little to no effect on a system unless they had under a gig of ram, and even decreased performance at times...least when it was first offered. havent really looked up anything more recent, maybe its improved? but the past two laptops ive bought i avoided it.

Well, things have changed. From an article on our website:
" The BIG differences between the original Intel® Turbo Memory w/1GB and the New Turbo Memory 2.0 w/2GB or 4GB
16 August, 2008
Intel® Turbo Memory (code named Robson) uses NAND Flash Memory to work with the Microsoft Windows Vista ReadyBoost and ReadyDrive technologies. It is a new low-latency, non-volatile memory cache between your system memory and your hard drive. It was designed to enable fast access to critical data and applications.
Well, that was the idea anyway.
Turbo Memory w/1GB (Ver. 1.0) on the original Centrino® systems was divided into 2 512MB slices with 512MB dedicated to Vista ReadyDrive, and 512MB dedicated to Vista ReadyBoost. It had its minor performance boosts under Vista if it was used to specifications, but for anyone with 2GB system memory or more its benefit was negligible…and disappointing.
With the launch of Intel® Centrino® 2, Turbo Memory got upgraded from Ver. 1.0 to Ver. 2.0 in 2GB or 4GB modules.
With the new driver version 1.7 you will see a great improvement in user control and performance. This new version now has the Intel Turbo Memory Dashboard. While 512MB will still be dedicated to Vista ReadyDrive the new Dashboard will give the user the option to select how the remaining 1.5 to 3.5GB of space should be allocated between Vista ReadyBoost and Intel® Pinning.
Intel® Pinning will allow you to drag and drop your most used applications or files into the Turbo Memory (e.g. the whole Office 2007 suite will only take up about 600MB) which will allow your pinned files or applications snap open much faster. It will remain in the module until removed from the Dashboard by the user.
This will make the remaining 1.5 to 3.5GB of space an internal Mini SSD for Vista ReadyDrive and the applications that you have chosen to “Pin” to Turbo Memory. Internal testing has shown this will provide a great performance boost in the application load time for the applications that have been pinned.
It’s quite a great alternate internal Mini SSD drive for a very affordable price of around $45 for 2GB or $75 for 4GB, without the hassle of using an external USB flash memory drive.
I love it when a plan comes together!"
You will almost never see any difference using benchmarks, because the only job that Turbo Memory does, over than delivering faster boot times, is launch applications. Once the application is launched Turbo Memory's job is finished. However, as an example, PhotoShop will normally take 30-45 seconds or more to launch, but with Turbo Memory it is launched and ready to go in less than 5 seconds. -

kinda pointless if you already have an ssd.

Totally pointless if you have an SSD

I'm in the process of deciding on a new laptop ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=420470) and am feeling pretty good about the MSI 1651.
I know MSI just announced the new GT640/740 with i7, does it make sense to wait for those to be released? What about timing/pricing on the whitebook/BTO versions of those? Or am I better off just getting the 1621 because it will perform well for what I need (standard use, mid-level gaming - Aion, WoW, new-ish Action/RPG titles).
Also, random hope. Is there anyway to replace the standard keyboard with one that doesn't have the number pad? I'm comfortable with most DIY/mod tasks short of fabrication and soldering, but I'm hoping I could just swap it out. I just don't see the use in the numpad and I feel like it would make the rest of the keyboard feel cramped and off-center. -
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
If you need a laptop now, get the 1651, the newer models will be much more expensive.
I have no clue about the keyboard... -
hi guys,
has anybody ever tried to connect this laptop to a receiver to get audio over HDMI ? how is the result ?
i read somewhere else, chipset Intel® PM45 like MS-1651-ID2 has, is the one taking responsible to pass audio out over HDMI. NVidia GTS 160M just handles video signal.
am I getting this right ? -
The GPU can handle both. Just set the Nvidia HDMI as the default sound output and you will get audio over hdmi, but I haven't managed to get it to output more than 2.1 though....
-
very interesting, thanks for the info. next laptop i buy ill definitely look into it if its as good and helpful as you make it sound.=]
-
still couldnt figure out how to get the turbo button to work...
. lol I'm such a noob.

Did you call our 24/7 Support Team?
-
no. I was not sure I should call them since this is not really an issue with the laptop.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Not to worry, they will be happy to help.
-
Something funny happened. I decided to undervolt my gpu because it was running hot. And surprisingly I can overclock it more now that the voltages are lower... How is that even possible???
-
It could be due to less heat, not sure though but thats what I would think..
-
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
What were your final clocks?
I looked at the 160m bios and there were only 2 default voltage settings, .9 and 1.09 -
Currently 580/1500/900. I couldn't use those before for more than 10 minutes... I'll try to see if I can go over 600.
-
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
Can any of you almighty retailers please see if a 8800m GTX, 9800m GT, 9800m GTX, 260m, or 280m will work in the gt628?
I know that they don't work in the gx720 model (i tried).
I will be most appreciative. -
IMO anything GTX is off limit as you see those mostly in laptops with a dedicated fan for the GPU...
-
What did you undervolt it to?
-
I really like this laptop but my temps for cpu and gpu are around 50-55 C just using firefox. Although I'm kinda surprised most of the palm rest area is always pretty cool, never even warm.
