Im assuming the superpack is the same as the one that came with the gt70:
- SteelSeries Kinzu Gaming Mouse
- SteelSeries Siberia v2 Gaming Headset
- MSI Branded Gaming Mouse pad
- MSI Branded backpack
- MSI Dragon Stamp

Actually, I need to double-check if it's still MX-2, but whatever the stock paste, it is doing a good job. Generally, I always re-paste for good measure and added insurance, but I was in a hurry to get this notebook, so I skipped having Ken do it this time. With the factory paste and TIM application, turbo-fan off, my MAX temp in stress testing was 82C. Ken did a video ( HERE) after applying ICD, and his MAX temp was 78C. Problem is, we need to find out what Ken's ambient room temp was during testing...... mine was 78F.

Hi all
Alluding to what kcruza95 mentioned about the price difference for the number of SSD drives in the configuration, I'm very tempted to purchase the lower MSI GT72 2PE (Dominator Pro)-018UK (1x128 M.2 SSD).
I have a question, if I was to buy 4x 256GB M.2 SSDs how easy is it cloning the the initial 128 SSD to one of the 256 ones? Is it as simple as: 1) Turning the raid function off. 2) Adding a 256 SSD. 3) Cloning the 128 to the 256 SSD?
I would be interested to hear the experts thoughts on the setup of the SSDs, and the best configurations etc...
Cheers guys -
What I usually do is remove the 128GB drive, install and configure the 256GBs in RAID, then launch Acronis. Select clone the 128GB now external connected via USB sata adapter and then clone proportional, so that it only copies what it needs.

The stock paste is not bad. The issue is not the quality of the paste itself, but rather what the paste job can do. The stock paste job tends to work good, and in this GT72 it seems to do a great job. But if you feel like you can do better and reduce temps further, sure you can do a repaste and ensure a good contact.
-
Maybe the GT72 doesn't need repaste to keep it cool. Those massive bottom air vents and dual exhaust should be mandatory on all gaming notebooks.
-
It's not about need haha, GT72 has excellent stock cooling, but if you want additional cooling for overclock headroom, I am sure you can do your own paste job

Just got my laptop!!! and loving every minute (excepted that i'm at work and the internet connection is limited). It feels so much more solid than the Asus G750 I return. another round of questions if possible
1) should I not update Nvidia Experience as well ? I know I was told to only update drivers when MSI release then
2) is there a advantage for ever using the integrated video card, even know I will always be plugged in ? I guess what i'm trying to ask is does it hurt the system on just leaving the 880M enable always, unless I want to go mobile, then I would switch to the integrated card, only reason i'm asking is god forbid that the button breaks from using it too much, and then i'm screwed!!!
3) I'm downloading all the software you recommend on the first page, but I really think I wont be using much of then except for MSI afterburner to monitor fans or temps while gaming, any extra benefits from the others that i'm not seeing right now ?
Thanks and can't wait go game with it tonight when I get home (if my 2 kids let me at least, lol) -
I'm curious about the cooling actually. The giant vent on the bottom doesn't allow for direct air intake by the fans - the fans are covered by the panel, so where are the fan intakes? Through the speaker grill on the top like the GS series?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Much like the GT60 and GT70 from the keyboard and through those vents in the bottom.
-
Right, so like I said about the vents on the bottom: They don't expose the fans, just some of the components. I figure that air intake is most efficient if the fans are exposed. This is consideration, the fans must get the bulk of its intake from somewhere else.
Is the keyboard really used for air intake? Is this the case for all of the G-series laptops, including the GS series? If so, maybe I shouldn't be using a keyboard cover then...
-
Does re pasting void the warranty? or should I just let xoticpc do it
-
I have a similar question: MSI advertises the easy access to the GT72s interior, however, there is a sticker "warranty void" if you remove the last screw. So... to be or not to be??
-
My GT72 PRO-007 will be coming in sometime today. Can't wait!
I'm currently using a GT70 2OD-039US, and handed my GT70 0NE-276US over to one of my boys after making the laptop upgrade.
About 2 weeks ago, the GT70 0NE-276US croaked after a couple memory errors, and would not boot up. I sent it to Square Trade, who ended up reimbursing me $2500.
Looks like my son will luck out with another decent hand-me-down, and I get another unexpected laptop upgrade!-=$tR|k3r=- and extrospector like this. -

You are in for a treat, and Welcome to the Party..... Enjoy! What's funny is we both have the same GT70 2OD, and I purchased the GT72 as a gift for one of my sons. My next big upgrade will be the upcoming next-gen GT72, with the new Maxwell GPU..... Soon!

This has been answered in the thread. In the UK and US at least, no removing the sticker only makes you responsible for any physical damage found in the event of a warranty claim.
Yes the keyboard is used for air intake so a cover is no advised, the large venting allows for low air resistance while keeping the entire system cool. -
Interesting, do you know if the GS series shares this design?
-
Thanks for the warm welcome.
The recent laptop purchase was unexpected, as I was looking to purchase a new laptop next year. I may be going down the same route as you, and purchase the next-gen GT72, with the current GT72 going to my eldest son, and the 20D going to the next in line ( I have 3 boys).
I've been through all 67 pages of threads here, and appreciate all of your hard work and dedication to the MSI boards, as well as all the other frequent contributors. Keep up the great work here!-=$tR|k3r=- and kiwipeter like this. -

Thanks, 2 boys, 3 girls, 13 grand-kids (Errrr, I think..... I think 14 & 15 are awaiting stork (UPS) delivery), LOL!
The next-gen GT72 should be awesome...... Maxwell should be here soon, followed be the Intel 9-Series chipset, and I am hoping for an X-treme Edition too.

C'mon more info please... do you still think it's certain that I'll be able to buy a GT72 with GTX980M for my Christmas gift?Kevin@GenTechPC likes this.

Hmmmmm, there is something a little disturbing about THIS..........
-
980M? The 900M series wouldn't be out until next year.
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
I have not seen anything official yet, on what NVidia will designate the new card, so I continue to call it the next-gen Maxwell (or 16 to 20nm 2nd Gen Maxwell)..... and rather than Christmas, I think it is much more likely you'll be carving pumpkins.
-
With the msi gt70 you can configure IT to use always the NVIDIA card? Or you r forced with the optimus to use the integrated card in windows task?
-
gx70 can disable enduro, but gt70 can't disable optimus. gt72 gpu/cpu not muxed together so it operates separately and manually switches with a click of a button.
Kevin@GenTechPC likes this. -
Any other way to switch between GPU/IGPU if button breaks ? also should I use the IGPU when I'm not gaming to put less stress on the system of it shouldn't matter ?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Such option isn't available right now but perhaps Svet can do it by flipping the register value in the EC. -
I'm assuming that the button a macro script that runs commands to disable/enable and reboot system right ? Is there a script or macro viewer we can use while pressing the button ?
-
as far as I know, GT72 does not use optimus, so the physical switch is more than a disable: the dGPU does not go through the iGPU at all.
-
It shouldn't matter. When you run desktop systems you end up suing your dGPU all the time.
-
The only way to bypass optimus is using external monitors that run directly to the dGPU and not the intel GPU, such as the HDMI or mini display port. If you want to force enable the dGPU when using optimus on your VGA port or via your laptop screen, you can use software that keeps the GPU alive, but this does not mean you are avoiding the iGPU when launching games that force it.
So! As far as I know, only using external monitors can you really only use your dGPU completely. -
Wow this suck... So many ppl complain about problema with optimus in game because the GPU sometimes dont work and the laptop keep using the CPU
-
I'm glad you linked it to here. Otherwise, I would probably refrain from opening the thread on the MSI forums with a title like that.-=$tR|k3r=- likes this.

I got my GT72 fired up and loaded last night (thank you Ninite).
It kind of has that new car feel; I don't want t peel off all the plastic yet. Like the temporary paper mats that you get in your new car. You're hoping to preserve that new feel for as long as possible.-=$tR|k3r=-, kiwipeter and extrospector like this. -

Meh..... Peel off all that plastic! I guarantee if will feel even better, look better, and function better too..... like, don't forget to peel off that tiny little piece covering your webcam.

Nvidia Maxwell Geforce 800 comes in September
maybe we are going to have a maxwell Gt72 by christmas!!! -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Yeah, that's pretty much the same speculation we been reading over the last couple month, and again, no official designation has been assigned by NVidia. Will the next-gen 20nm Maxwell be another 8xx series, or will it be 9xx series, or will it have an entirely different designation altogether? Everybody seems to think Christmas, but I'm thinking a new next-gen GT72, when I am carving pumpkins and making lil' spooks pee their pants..... yes, fun times!

I am from Brazil and at January 8 i will be traveling to USA. I think i wil buy a GT72, but would be awesome to buy a GT72 with next gen graphics! -
Very exciting to hear that isn't! If your travel is sure, why don't you make arrangements with reseller beforehand? I am sure the new GT72 with new GPUs will fly off shelves!
Yeah, sometimnes it can be a bother but to be honest I have found maybe 1 game, tops, that had an issue of using intel instead of nvidia GPU so it is not really much of a problem. You can always try and force applications to run off the nvidia GPU so its alright! -
Marcelosiciliano Notebook Consultant
hahaha I will try! It would be very disappointing to buy a GT72 with a 880m and then next month MSI launches a GT72 with a 980m

No, it's connected to EC (embedded controller) so it's not running a macro script. -
It's more like changes happen in both software and hardware. Hardware side: once the button has been pushed, the EC register shifts, switching the digital muxers connected to each GPU output. Also the active bootable GPU gets changed too in BIOS so next time the notebook boots into the correct one.
Software side: the GPU is disconnected driver wise and it's services stopped. Windows than needs to restart to apply the changes. The first time a switch is performed it asks for drivers. On consecutive switches HWIDs have been stored so it goes smoothly like physically changing GPUs.
I don't know exactly who's responsible for those changes in software. If it's a driver (muxers recognised as an actual device in windows), a service or MSI's SCM (System Control Manager)

I read that The next gen Is 900m series. But this serie will be 800m rebrand in maxwell..

Unfortunately, I am now running into my first problems with the GT72.
When at work, I am connected to a very weak WiFi network. Eventually, after a few hours, the GT72 will lose connection to it. However, other devices nearby stay connected. The network does not appear on the network list anymore. Only a restart allows a reconnect.
Now, it got even worse. After losing connection again, all other available networks (there are quite a few) disappeared. Nothing could fix this. Windows troubleshooting reported a failure to reset the WiFi device. The killer network manager crashed. A reboot got stuck, and finally yielded an MSI-branded blue screen.
After a reboot the device was disabled and I had to re-enable it via control panel, then all was fine... for now.
The strange thing: when at home, connected to a strong network, there have never been any issues.
Also, when connecting to bluetooth headphones, switching them off and then later back on again, I first have to remove the device from the win8.1 manager in order to add it back and reconnect...
Any ideas or similar experiences? The system is pretty much stock - Win 8.1 x64. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
There is the possibility you simply have a bad wireless card. Personally, I have not had any issues whatsoever, but I do have a strong wireless-AC network. Killer DoubleShot Pro, and the Qualcomm Killer N1525 Wireless-AC card are new technologies. So much so, information is scarce, and the N1525 card is not listed yet on the Qualcomm driver download page. As such, for the time being all we seem to be left with the driver package provided by MSI, and I suspect this driver is somewhat immature. Normally, I would suggest you reinstall the driver package, but in this case (again, new tech), I would submit a support ticket to both MSI and Qualcomm ( HERE) advising them of the problem..... and then, proceed as they advise. I realize this requires a bit of work on your part, but your efforts could possibly be beneficial to the entire community.
Thanks in-advance, and Good Luck! Please keep us advised......
-
You might just have a faulty WIFI card. I had that exact issue with the Qualcomm Killer wireless card in my old GT60, and after re-installing drivers and trying every troubleshooting option, I just submitted an RMA request to XoticPC, sent the Killer card to them, and they sent back a card of my choice (considering i spent nearly an extra $100 for the Killer card). I chose the Intel AC 7260, and I've stuck with it for two laptops now and haven't had an issue.
Perhaps Killer needs to fine-tune its quality inspection. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It can happen. It is a new card so there may be a few teething troubles.
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Check your wireless router's website for firmware update.
Also, test out different wireless properties of WLAN adapter to troubleshoot and find out which works better. -
Thanks for all the advice!
I downloaded the driver package from MSI, and during install it claimed to be a newer version than the one installed. After that, the rest of day there were no issues. Will see how it works today. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Good Deal! I received the notebook on 23 July, and now I see MSI released several new drivers (also new audio, Bluetooth, and NVidia) on 29-30 July. Hopefully that resolves all of your issues..... keep us posted.
EDIT: Wow, MSI has released new bio, FW, and utilities too...... that was fast! I have a lot of updating to do.
