Audio quality out of the headphone jack depends on the quality/sound signature of the system's DAC and the power of the amp.
The GT72 has an independent dedicated amp for each of its audio outputs, and the AHD 2000s have an impedence of only 25 ohms, so the laptop's amps are sufficient.
The DACs that MSI have used in the past have always been some of the best that I've found in laptops, so you likely won't find any better. Although if you're keen on quality, I recommend getting a USB-connected external DAC/amp for your headphones to clean things up. Also, this way you won't have to worry about sound quality from a laptop ever again.
I've always immediately uninstalled any equalizer bloatware that comes with my laptops. Artificial rendering of audio balance doesn't do any justice if the DAC is poor.

It must be 1.35V to work, those sticks are expensive.

I personally use the Fiio E07K DAC/Amp combo combined with a pair of Philips Fidelio S2. Believe me that once you try a dedicated DAC, the laptop will sound "tiny" in comparison. The power output is enough but other audio aspects are a bit lacking :p

Anyone have issues with the track pad when scrolling using two fingers. Mine doesn't seem to do it smooth at all. Skips pauses. I don't see any drivers that needed to be updated when I check it. Thanks!

I don't have the name, sorry.
In fact, I can never find info about the DAC in laptops anywhere at all, and I guess that's because laptop manufacturers expect two types of customers: those who would be satisfied with standard audio fidelity don't need to know more about the laptop's DAC, and those who are more picky would just disregard the laptop's DAC and opt for an external source.

Hopefully dynaudio manufacturers not just MSI's speakers but also its DACs. I don't have the GT72 for myself yet, so what I'm saying is that the MSI laptops I've owned have been better audio sources than other laptops I've tried. But again, if you're shopping for a laptop and audio quality is an important factor, I highly recommend you play it safe and get a permanent, external DAC/amp combo. You can use it to output to headphones as well as external computer speakers. FiiO makes good entry models like the E07K felix mentioned. The Fostex HP-A3 and HP-A4 are excellent options as well.

The DAC section is in part software controlled on these integrated sound chips. As you can see on Realtek's control panel, you can change it's output bit depth and sample frequency on a driver level. The hardware part is composed of the chipset itself. I have tried a set of custom in-ear headphones (the Unique Melody Miracle, a 900$ headphone) and there's no comparison to an external sound dedicated device. I've never opened up my GT60 to that extent so I can't comment on the Amp section but regarding it's performance I'd say it's on the warmer, mostly V-shaped curve.

Back to topic. Striker can you check something out for me? On previous models, the keyboard illumination had this slightly greenish tint between the spacebar and direction keys. It was noticeable if you applied a white color profile. Does the new revision also present this? Just a small aesthetic nitpick :p

LOL, "aesthetic nitpick", I'll say! :D

No, sorry I can't help you now, because it's been '-=$tr|k3r=- approved', re-boxed, and gift-wrapped for my eldest son. I can tell you that with the new key design, the LED's do appear more brilliant. If you looked at my photos, you can see this, and I never changed the lighting from it's default setting. Your inquiry just goes to show, nothing escapes the critical eye, and in the vast pool of opinion, perfection cannot exist. Personally, I seriously doubt I would even notice your nitpick..... overall it looks superb, performs outstandingly, and I now excitedly await my new Maxwell GT72....... unboxing photos and benchmarks SOON...... stay tuned!

It is not meant to be removed easily. It can be if you take the computer apart, but its not like previous models where you could easily do so.
You will not do any damage to it even if the computer is always plugged into AC, and its a good idea to keep it in to work similar to a UPS for desktops.

The 4780HQ CPU mentioned is probably a typo. it must be the 4870HQ, which exists!

    Comparison between 4710HQ and 4870HQ

It's basically the same specs as the 4710, but with Intel iris graphics and some other new technologies. Iris Pro 5200 seems to be much more powerful and power efficient than the HD4600!

It may make sense to use that GPU switching button after all!

This is all assuming that was a typo, of course... :)

This is very interesting! The max 3.7 ghz speed is a welcome addition. That small boost does help with CPU intensive games. Iris Pro will most likely manage to stand on its own for most tasks too. I am excited!

As Striker (Not stalker) said, I tought as well it was a typo

So we may be looking at both CPU (Haswell to Crystal Well) and GPU (Kepler to Maxwell) generational upgrades.
This makes me both excited and worried because that $3400 price tag might be justified haha .

That may be a bit out of the budget I'm willing to spend on a laptop.

The maxwell wont cost 3400. I will cost at max( the base version) 2800.
3400 is almost a 1000 more than the 010 and that would be absurd

    @striker
No I'm not searching perfection. I just noticed it some days ago on both mine and my friend's (who owns my previous GT780) and was just curious if the newer keyboard revision had it too (at first I feared it was the LEDs failing). I'm not the "perfection maniac" kind of person. As long as it does what I want it too, it's ok by me. That doesn't mean I do not take care of my stuff however, I want them to last as long as possible.
By the way, it's been more that a year since I own the GT60 now. I would had spotted it since day 1 if I looked for it ;)
Your kid must be pretty lucky to have a dad like that :)

    @marcelosiciliano
I'm afraid that price tag is pretty close to the final sales price. Lower specced SKUs should appear so in the end it might not be that much of a problem (maybe initially as all newer products).

I'd personally take efficiency over performance in that integrated GPU (Iris PRO 5200) anyday. If you need performance just switch and you can get plenty.

    Felix

Meh, I wouldn't go by the BDT to USD conversion. The current GT72 Dominator Pro-007US is $2899, so I'm guessing here in the U.S., the new Maxwell equivalent will probably be in the $2999 price range..... if that. We'll see SOON!

It does affect potential frequencies of course as the typical trend is +200Mhz for 47xx and +400mhz for 48xx chips. Anyone run xtu on their gt72 yet?

Privacy plays a big role in this time and age. Having bluetooth set to undiscoverable, not including a TPM module and also Windows' UAC (as bothersome as it may be) are small things that contribute to a more "personal computer". We hear hacks and cracks all around us, thinking ok somebody wants to snoop on our stuff, but do we really know who's behind it in reality? I've been exposed to some really dangerous technology regarding privacy matters.

ANd wouldn't it be wonderful if there was some kind of generic "menus" or "functions" help feature that you were introduced to as you are guided through the original setup of the machine... or even better, had available to you at the press of a button, until such time as you are familiar with the minutiae of your new machine?

The privacy issue is understandable, the power issue is a stretch. Still, not everyone uses their Fn keys the same way and having something that tells you what all those cryptic icons mean would be nice for the un-geeks *raises hand* out there.

I recently got the laptop and am happy with except for one thing

The charms swipe on the touchpad. No matter how hard I try to get rid of it I can't. I have tried removing it with regedit.

I can remove it with other drivers of synaptics but then the fn key to enable/disable the touchpad doesn't work

If anyone knows how to fix this it would be ENORMOUSLY appreciated

Hi everyone, I am trouble shooting a friends MSI GS-60 Ghost, which we bougth at PC Exotic. Anyways I have recently installed windows 7 without any issues/problems. However I did this while I was at the office and while at the office it connected to the internet fine. Upon getting home it can no longer connect to my wireless network. I know it's not my network because I'm writing to you right now from my network which is apparently working.

Essentially, it will connect to my Router but it will just sit there and say no internet as if something is blocking it, I can't understand what's going on or what's blocking it. Again, connect at my office, but then as soon as I got home it's no longer working.

Yeah, as others have pointed out, there is information, manuals, quick guides that show exactly the whole FN+F6 combo for webcam :) I had that issue several years ago, because I never read the included manual. Every computer I have bought from MSI directly, and several asus, include the manuals and quick starts in pdf form even on desktop. That is where I first read about the FN+F6 combo!

And as Meaker points out, you can also download them :D

Don't get angry thebobmaier, as Striker said, you are not the first, and as things look, won't be the last user with this "issue" :)

    hi all!

My loyal Alienware M15x finally died after over 4 years with me. The diagnosis showed that the motherboard has failed :(

Dell gave me a quote for AUD735! I can get the motherboard a lot cheaper off eBay etc. but I thought I'll get the M15x fixed later as it was getting old in terms of specs.

After some research, I bought the GT72 2PC 085AU over a week back. I must say, this laptop is a great piece of technology. Really high-end specs combined with stunning looks, dual fans, ample ports and a colourful keyboard. I love everything about it. However, there's one thing that I have experienced. The wi-fi keeps dropping out and losing connection. I get a yellow exclamation mark and the internet doesn't work. The weird part is the wi-fi seems to be working fine on my other devices (phone, tablet, Chromecast etc.) So, it's definitely not the modem/router.

Can someone please advise what can be done?

    Thanks!

Wow... you really are an arrogant . I thought so regarding some of your posts about the battery issue, now I'm sure. Your knowledge and/or associations with the manufacturers don't give you the right to be a jerk. Thankfully I'm done here and won't see anything further from you but sometimes getting an answer might just not be worth it.... I'd go into how most "user manuals" are jumbles of poorly translated garbage that are difficult to navigate so we've been trained not to look at them over the years but you wouldn't want to hear that... Exhalt in your omniscience, oh super geek, and please continue to validate your personal worth with pontifications here at the alter of "look how cool I am"....

I don't think it was done in particular seriousness. In IT there is a phrase (RTFM) (I'll let you look that one up if you don't know it, would get me in trouble ;) ). I'd agree for anything particularly complex manuals can be a little hard to follow but for the basic function keys it's good to have a quick skim over to inform yourself of all the function keys etc.

    @thebobmaier,

It appears you have gotten your feelings hurt, or perhaps suffered some form of embarrassment, and for that I apologize. If you will review the Quick Start Guide and User Manual, I think you will find these helpful, and really a simple read...... Give them a try!

    :)
