Do you have an idea what the normal timeframe from announcement to seeing the card in the new(er) models of laptops normally are? Just curious since after reading the thread I'm planning on getting one of these and I was going to pull the trigger after some research but I can wait a bit for improved tech.

I personally don't see that happen in next 2 months, especially for the non-US consumers, GT72 with 880m has just ship out in UK, and if MSI release the 980m before Christmas, then we're going to see riots on the street once more (in the forums, anyway).

    Regards.

So I ran into my first issue today. While playing a game called Archeage the game stop responding. no big deal, I'll just reset the game. Well that didn't work so I decided to just go to start menu and restart the computer from there. That's funny my mouse is not responding anymore. Let me try different USB plug-in. None of the USB seems to work! Let me restart the computer again. USB still don't work. Maybe it's my mouse let me plug it in a different computer. Mouse works fine. Maybe it is my USB plug-ins. Let me try my iPhone charger to see if it charges my phone. Nope none of them work. Let me restart the computer again by holding down the power button. That doesn't work and now the backlit keyboard doesn't turn on either in the laptop says that the power is plugged in but not charging. But maybe it says that when it's at 90%.

this is as far as I can troubleshoot my laptop. Does anybody else have any suggestions?

Yep, definitely wait..... we are soooooo close to GT72 Maxwell goodness, I can taste it. The Maxwell 970/980M is sure to be HOT, and in demand. If you want to be one of the cool kids (like me), you will want to have your pennies ready, and 'pre-order' as soon as the new SKU's are announced. I have a hunch the 1st shipments are going to go FAST, and pre-orders will have priority, in the order they were taken. Better yet, pre-order your pre-order..... that is, I have already given my reseller purchase authorization for the top configured GT72 Maxwell SKU..... positioning myself 1st in line, so the rest of you gals & fellas will have to take a back seat. :D

    :)

We will see the 980M before Christmas..... most estimates say mid-October, and I think perhaps even sooner.

    @rigo1158,

Which model GT72 do you own? Have you looked into the Device Manager for driver or hardware failure? Are all your 'start-ups' loading correctly? What version of the Intel Chipset do you have installed, and is it the latest?

    :)

Cool, good to hear for me. My situation is that I was going to build a desktop but was waiting for the new cards and figured I'd let the insanity die down. Was then going to go for a laptop to compliment it (so much easier for LAN parties) and when I saw the announcement for the new mobile cards I was just curious how long I had to wait. My Asus G74 is still going, but new job money is itching to be spent on a computer too. :)

Well with the desktop it's an easy choice right now and mobile cards don't have gk110 to worry about.

:D Glad you found out mate! This will be a forever "issue" for new MSI users but it was good to see you insta-solved it!

Let's hope so! Desktop cards are about to be widely available, so I hope laptops follow through!

Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 And 970 Review

Definitely amazing performance. With a bit of OC which no doubt we can achieve, we are nearing 780 desktop class performance on notebooks thanks to 980m. These new maxwell cards are beastly, and it seems their secret is amazingly fine tuned power management. Considering that maxwell draws more than a titan black when GPGUing, but considerable less than a 780 ti when gaming... dAMM freaking awesome! :D

So in general, the USB ports are the only thing miss behaving, as well as the keyboard backlight? Can you reinstall the drivers for usb? I had something similar happen to my Asus N550 and I had to uninstall the USB 3.0 drivers from the device manager, reboot a bunch of times and they reinstalled with full performance again, no more issues.

    Congratulations on your newly purchase!
Regarding the issues you were having with Archeage, did you do any software install/windows update before it happens?

How about updating BIOS and EC firmware?
Nvidia has a new driver that just came out today which is version 344.11, have you tried this driver yet?

You have to activate it. Fn key plus one of the f keys on top that has the webcam logo.

Test your movie maker right now. I think after windows updates it will stop working but definitely let me know. This is always the case with me. I end up having to reformat the computer and ignore updates.

Had a friend look at it. He kept it overnight. He said I was really just missing some updates that I have been ignoring. Everything seems to be working now. I didn't think not updating my computer will make things stop working all of a sudden. Thanks everybody for trying to help me resolve this issue.

It's always a good ideas to keep everything updated, but since USB in this notebook is by Intel, my thought was to update or reinstall the chipset.

Just for future reference, some updates are to be installed in a certain order. If you uncheck a specific update that is a prerequisite of another (ex one patches a file while the consecutive fixes registry values) configs get messed up and BSOD happens. Either keep the default checked or install them manually with a tool like WinToolkit. That takes care of the correct order of installation if going the second route. :)

What's a reasonable amount to save up for a stock lower configuration GT72 with 970M? Is $2200 reasonable, considering the 870M model is currently $2000 MSRP and the lower config 880M is currently $2500?

It's fair to expect the 970M model to be priced slightly higher than the 870M, but lower than the 880M, yes?
I ask because for the first time in a little while (as far as I'm aware), the new second tier model (970M) will outperform the previous top tier model (880M).

What we normally see when new GPU's come out is that the price will stay the same as the current model, at least if all other components are the same. Wont know for sure until they are released though.

Yeah, I have noticed that resellers tend to keep the prices of the current model, but upgrade the model itself. That is why usually you find the older models for sale sometimes depending if there is still stock around :D

Yep, very soon, but I think prices could go a bit higher the next round, at least for the top SKU's..... with higher configured SuperRAID 3 primary storage, faster Core i7's, and the Maxwell GPU's. Preliminary leaks (if given credence) are already showing substantial benefits and performance gains over current GPU's, and as such, it only makes sense that new GT72's will be power-packed, with more performance oriented features. That said, I believe the next-round of GT72 will be the best yet, and with this, I would expect higher prices..... you get what you pay for. This is why I have (pre-ordered, my pre-order) already given Ken my purchase authorization for the top SKU, regardless of cost. Given MSI's track record of competitive pricing and 'bang-for-the-buck' configurations, I feel I can do this in all confidence. SOoooooo, do I think the next top Maxwell GT72 will be more expensive? Certainly, but it will be an entirely different animal, in a class of it's own, yet considering it's components, still a great value. Judging from the last GT72 Dominator Pro-007, the upcoming Maxwell GT72 is sure to please....... so save those pennies, get ready, pre-order your pre-order, because initial shipments are sure to go FAST!

    :D

Yeah, I received the GT72 in the U.S., 23 July 2014...... if that helps, but this doesn't mean the UK will see the same delay in the next go-round. Also, most of the U.S. resellers ship globally...... just a thought. :)

GEEZ, 20%? Has anyone discussed with you fellas, the tea party we had in Boston, a couple centuries ago? :D

It still may be helpful to discuss this with one of the global resellers. They are familiar with your country requirements, and perhaps the numbers will not be as bad as you think. When items are imported into the UK, to UK retailers/e-tailers, etc., taxes are assessed (a VAT) at some point, and are reflected in the UK bottom-line, right? In other words, does it really amount to 20% above and beyond your local retail prices?

Anyhow, just a thought, because I know most of the U.S. resellers do a fair global business.

    Best of luck......

    :)

Well just check the price on Gentech for GT72 Pro-010, which is $100 more than what Ebuyer selling it for, so 20% is a big difference, especially after I dropped my 2+ years old GS3 and kill the display. Since the 980m version is likely to be slightly more expensive, that 20% will cover more than half of a new phone (Sony Xperia Z3).

Unless they can sent it as a gift and declare to be t-shirts, to dodge the tax, otherwise buying outside the EU is generally not a very good idea.

I have to get something clarified! in some reviews i have read msi promises 4 hours of real world usage on the battery!?

Those who got max 2 hours out of it, where you using iGpu or dGpu? i love that button! and i would guess it should not be a problem for that battery with the dGpu turned off, semes to me that is what that gpu button is for..

When gaming i would of course be on ac power, but 4+ hours on battery with iGpu would be great for surfing and writing! :)

Testing of battery life on IGP resulted in just over two hours, but I have not re-tested since the latest FW update, which addresses the 'battery wear' issue. The new upcoming Maxwell GT72's should have better battery life times (or so I have read) due Maxwell's efficiency. Somehow, I find this doubtful because this shouldn't have anything to do with IGP battery run times. Also, I've read we can actually game using the dedicated GPU (Maxwell) on battery, but I'll have to see it, to believe it. I do not know if the next-gen GT72 will even have the same battery, but I'll do more testing and reporting when it arrives.

I'll be interested in the long term consequence of Maxwell 2 GPUs running so well on battery, because it isn't far fetched to expect batteries to wear out much faster.

Yeah, just saying, I have to see it to believe it. I've done the reading on Maxwell's efficiency, and to game on battery only, I envision some sort of gargantuan battery, beyond the current GT72's battery rating. For me, Maxwell's efficiency is more about lowering temps. Even if Maxwell does usher-in, battery only gaming, I am sure it will not be without it's limitations, and probably still somewhat impractical..... so I'm sure I'll still search for an AC outlet.

Hopefully they expand the range of options in battery mode, it would be cool if the GPU could shut off parts of the memory bus, reduce the PCI express lane count etc to help more.

I bet you are not as eager as I, LOL! :D

Have you done, or do you have the latest FW (version 1503) flash? Supposedly this corrects the 'battery-wear' issue, and extends battery life. If you have time, run PCMark 8 battery test on IGP, and let us know your results.

    Hello everyone.

I live in the UK and I just decided to buy a GT72 Dom Pro. As there is nothing left from the 880M batch, I now have to wait for the 980M versions... Does anyone have any news on the ETA? Any chance it could happen in October since the mobile cards have been officially announced? Or will that be for the US only?

Thanks in advance and btw great topic. Lots of different information on here :)
