There are several models of the GT72 Dominator Pro, all of which have the 980m, you should be able to find the pricing on the individual models on seller sites.

We don't know for sure, but temps look great and the desktop equivalents have a nice headroom. I think we will see a nice bump!

I would say not worth it unless you have a specific usage in mind for that CPU. Really no need for most to go above the 4810 in my opinion.

I was just stating my opinion on the CPUs, not that these machines come with it. It's not necessary to go up to the 49xx series unless you have a specific need for it. Most people have no need to go past the 4810 CPU.

You'd need to ask Asus why they chose that specific GPU to be used in their machine. Builders don't have any input on that.

If I have enough cash when the pre-order go live, I would order the base model of the GT72 with 980m, that's with only 1x 128gb m.2 SSD, then buy 3x 512gb m.2 SSDs and install them in RAID5 config, and use the 128gb SSD as file history drive for hourly backup, assuming it's feasible of course.

Backups are best kept externally if possible :) also the 1tb hdd may be best for that job if you want to go that route.

    I know!

Which is why I have a 2TB portable hard drive dedicate to biweekly differential system backup.

For the file history however, consider the possibility of taking the GT72 to Uni for coursework, be able to recover files without plug in external hard drive is much more convenient.

Plus, I'll be using the 1TB hdd as clone disk for the OS, so should more than 1 of the m.2 ssd in raid failed, I still have a backup system.

I have all my multimedia files stored in other 2 external hard drives, with 20-odd old games installed, I don't think I'll ever get bored with just the laptop.

    Regards.

I thought the new economic model would come with a better cpu. the model with the cpu i7-4980HQ is too expensive. is no leakage from my budget, but I think too much money for so little features. makes me wonder if buying a sager, but I really like the gt72

Unless your a power user that really needs the extra CPU power for work, programing or whatever the 4710HQ will be plenty for gaming or unless your -=$tR|k3r=- ;)

Just ordered myself the GT72 with an 970m from my local retailer. Should get it in the next couple of weeks.

Does anyone know the brand of the M.2 SSD drives in the laptop? I might want to upgrade it in the future,

I can't make out the Make/Model of them from the videos.

Their is a $3300 version with the 4980HQ so not THAT more expensive than the top 4710HQ model, but there's also the IPS display to consider and I've scene various sites mention it coming with a Super Pack (mouse + pad, headset, backpack)

Personally, I want the better display and CPU power for large scale RTSs....Supreme Commander Survival Mode here I come! It'll be glorious to watch 10,000+ units assault my base ;)

I can understand wanting a IPS display that will come with the 4980HQ models but personally the price is not worth it unless like I stated earlier you are a power user and really need the extra horsepower , the 4710HQ can easily handle even the most demanding RTS's.
Hopefully builders/re-sellers will have options to upgrade to a IPS display if you get base CPU.

Fair enough. The 4710HQ is a good CPU but if I'm gonna be stuck with the thing since it's soldered, I want POWAR Muahahaha...

On a more serious note, I do agree with you on resellers/buiilders giving the IPS upgrade option but if that was the case, I'd also love the option to forego all the extra SSDs on the 098 model I mentioned. I really do want just the CPU and IPS display. I can live without paying all the extra for SSDs wich is where at least 400+ of that price is coming from.

However, I don't really see those things happening ..shrug..

    Hey guys,

Could anyone help me with a possibly stupid question I have with regards to the GT72's screen? I've been trying to get an answer in another thread but so far no-one has responded to me. I was wondering if it would be possible to replace the screen on a GT72 2QE by a 120Hz screen? If so, where should I look to do that?

I am buying from Powernotebooks.com since I've dealt with them before.
The Sager in my signature (which I need to update) was from them and while I've been happy with the power of the Sager I will state that AMD Enduro SUCKS! More then 50% of the time my game won't activate the AMD card and I have to quit the game to go into AMD's settings to manually setup. Not to mention I guess most my games are Nvidia Optimized anyhow and those that aren't I won't or shouldn't see to much of a difference in performance.

Anyhow, does anyone have any suggestions? I've read that the Nvidia GTX 970M would be a decent improvement over the AMD 8970M even according to ones I talked to with powernotebooks, but am considering maybe just maybe treat myself to the 980M instead, it would be about $240 some difference. (980M has 8GB GDDR5 memory also.)

Would it be worth it though? I know it's in the eye of the beholder, but to further future-proof me. (The Sager was supposed to do this, but I just can't get past the Enduro crap. Also is there anything I should know about the GT72 series laptops? I DO plan on going through all 108 pages on here, but figured it there was anything serious I should know about, it would be great to know before I pull the purchase trigger. I plan to purchase by October 10th 2014, it is October 8th now. (just in case the time stamps mess up or something.)

Thanks for your inputs everyone, any and all are appreciated!

Dragon, i would buy the 980m version and buy a 500GB SSD separately you end up with the same price basically.
Its a shame to get GT72 and settle for 970m since the cooling in the GT72 can handle 980m easily

What model will keep the 970M cooled the most under heavy load? The GS Ghost Pro or the GT72 Dominator ? Or the new Asus G751?
    Big difference in temps?

The GT72 doesn't even break a sweat cooling the 970M

    http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=t9-d5k-tkBA

Not sure about the ASUS but traditionally it has very good cooling only problem with it now is they made it ugly as hell.

I don't get why anyone wants to carry a 4KG laptop with 970m only when a 1.9KG laptop can easily cool the 970m
970M is cooler card than 870m which was in gs60 already and even has less TDP than 870m
Go with 980m people over those multiple SSD in raid it wont make much of a difference in real life, settle with 1 SSD for now and add more SSDs later on if needed

Please report about the noise level of the GT72 with 980M:

    - Compare it to the older GT72 with the 880M
    - Compare it to the Asus G751 with the 980M

    Please!!!

Fan noise levels are comparable, I'm with you I hate extreme fan noise but the GT72 keeps the noise levels in check considering what high performance hardware it has.
I like the ASUS G series laptops too but the new design is terrible ,ASUS needs to update the new chassis from top to bottom, it's really looking dated and too "extreme" for my taste.
While the GT72 looks like a gaming laptop it's a little more tastefully done in my opinion.

Ok I will be tweaking the build and order. Gonna go with the MSI GT72-211 only differences from my previous setup is that it has the 980M, a single 128GB SSD (stock setup)

    Price is:
    As Configured: $2413.00
    3% Cash Discount: $72.39
    3% Cash Discounted Price: $2340.61

I looked up a 512GB m.2 SSD on Amazon since I have Prime shipping and it cost: $279.99 Amazon.com: Crucial M550 256GB SATA M.2 Type 2280 Internal Solid State Drive CT256M550SSD4: Computers & Accessories

I should be ok with that one.

    So all in: $2620.60

I could sell off the 128GB or keep it as a Driver/Software dropbox for the laptop.

Of course using stock SSD does leave me open to whatever capacity I want to get and I'll wait on ordering any said capacity until after I get the laptop.

I also do plan on selling the Sager in my Signature so I should get some money back for that too.

If I decided to go the 970M route though what laptop would anyone suggest since the cooling on the newer gpus are or seem better? Just wondering.

Honestly though I like the design of the GT72 it looks really mean. :)

    GT72 is super high end AND COSDTS 2299 CURRENTLY with 980 Amazon.com : MSI GT72 Dominator 211 17.3" i7-4710HQ 2.5Ghz Nvidia GTX 980M 8GB Full HD Blu Ray Gaming Laptop W8.1 : Computers & Accessories
You can get SSD 512 for even less than 280 with other brands, overall I'd take 2500$~ 980m+2ssd (128+512) over 2400 with 4x128ssd (these SSDs will be thrown away if SSD prices dropped and you wanted to add more storage since you have used all of your SSD slots)

leave some room for upgrades since SSD prices are dropping like crazy

if decided going with 970m GS60 is a great choice but it's nosier than GT72, 2ssd+1hd only vs 4ssd/1hd gt72 And has no optical drive (if you even still use optical dsrives...?)

Thanks, I actually looked up Newegg and found out the same setup. I'll be ordering either tomorrow or the next day (October 7th or 8th.).
$2299 for laptop (I don't get any laser etching, but the laptop itself does look pretty slick and has a dragon on it. (which I love, but isn't the only reason I was ordering.

Even with rush shipping it'll be fairly cheap.

$2,344.95 total with next day shipping, (Unless I just went with free 3-day shipping which I may as if I ordered before the weekend I should have it by the following week.

So yeah maybe a little over $2500 for the laptop w/ 2x SSD's (128GB and like a 500GB) which wouldn't be bad and even still leave room for 2x more m.2 SSD's down the road. The GTX 980M should be pretty future proof for my personal usage and I expect maybe a 5 year personal and usable lifespan, if it lasts longer great if it dies then I'll feel I got my money's worth. If it still plays decently by that time and I'm still happy with it, then I'll run it to the grave. :D

Note: 5 year term is by my personal use and not measured in "tech world" uses since things can change so much. I am just more team green, the AMD 8970M when it works still plays EVERYTHING I want it to play on "High" at 1080p at 30fps or greater. But most of my games seem to run on team green better. (The lenovo sometimes gets better fps with the single gt755M running games than my AMD 8970M! How's that for a head scratcher?) Even after ownership for a year. So I'm just gonna go team green. I used to be. Owned a GTX360M, GTX460M and GTX 675M before this.

I'm sure I can recoup some money from my currently configured Sager, it's just personal with me.

    Hello guys. I just ordered a GT72 with a 980m and 4x SSDs.

My question is, since that has 4x ssds in RAID 0, is it possible to split the space into 2 partitions and dual boot windows 8.1 and ubuntu? Has anyone tried that? I've been dual booting on my computers for several years and I'd really love to have linux on there as well since I need it for work. It's my first time using a RAID0 setup though, so I'm not sure.

    Cheers

RAID 0 of all 4 drives will simply treat your drives as a single massive storage device, so you can definitely partition it and then install whatever you want in the other partition.

    Thanks for the quick response.

I have no doubt I will be able to partition the RAID. My concerns are regarding the GRUB boot loader installation on UEFI and the possibility of linux not recognizing the RAID.

UEFI might give you some trouble installing but it should be definitely possible as any new equipment comes with uefi bios and linux won't be stopped haha. As for raid, I am sure there are raid drivers for linux in different distributions. It could be a interesting project to try!

Challenge accepted. No matter how awesome this machine will be in Windows, truth is I can't live without Ubuntu anymore...

I hope reinstalling windows and all the drivers will be easy enough, in case I fail.

You can split and combine the drives however you like via raid too. They are all independant drives.

    Hi Guys,

Due to the problems associated with merging all GT72 Dominator Pro models (different product links, specs, SKU's, product graphics, etc.), this thread will primarily be devoted to the MSI GT72 880M models. A new thread has been created for the new MSI GT72 GTX-980M flagship models, so discussion related to these models should be directed HERE.

    Thanks & Enjoy!

    :)
