Can i restore the backup i created with the msi burn recovery to a MBR formatted ssd drive in legacy mode? The stock 750gb drive is GPT partitioned.

But you can still use recovery DVD to restore to your SSD in UEFI.

Is the GPU on the ONE-403 supposed to peak at 90c with a cooling mat? It's well elevated and the cooling mat's fan is pretty potent but I'm using stock thermal paste.

Maybe try update the firmware on your SSD.

Got around 84c when benchmarking with stock thermal paste. You can try turn on turbo fan and without cooling mat see if it runs cooler.

Turbo fan indeed is very effective - I was hitting 90c and then realized I was not running turbo fan. I switched it on and the temps were only hitting 77ish

I ran some 3DMark tonight now that I am learning to live with the fact that win8 is here to stay - I can do better with a win 7 benching image no doubt :D

Hmm. Around 91-92 without even being elevated, no cooling mat. I think it throttles itself down a bit when it gets past 91. I'm running GW2, all on ultra including super-sampling.

With turbo fan/no mat or elevation, it settles around 82-83 while sounding like a jet engine. 76 to 78c with both. It's a major difference.

If this is normal, I guess I totally underestimated the heat generation of this card.

Thanks for the comparison , running 3D Mark 11 performance, I got a score of 6029 and around 86 at highest temp without the mat or turbo fans. The highest with mat only is 78 and a 6032 score. GW2 must really push this thing for it to be heating up like that.

Thanks as well Meaker for the info on throttling. I'll keep that noted.

Recently received my GT60-0NE, really like it so far. But was curious of other users temperatures running Unigine Heaven. Ran mine at 1080, normal tessellation, without turbo fan it got up to about 92c, with turbo fan it was around 80c. Might have to reapply thermal pads and paste, unless this is normal.

It's always a good bet to get some nice 0.5mm thermal pads and apply some IC diamond yourself if you can.

Has anyone had any luck getting any 'Games for Windows Live' games working on the new GT60 with 680M graphics under Windows 8?

I know there was a Quallcomm driver update that did the trick, but I have been unable to get the same driver to work under WIndows 8.

Has anyone had any issues with these games? Found a fix?

As far as I know, there is a GFWL made for windows 8 that doesn't have this issue. Make sure you're running the correct and latest version.

Hehe... The only difference between Ultimate and Ultra is hair that goes from normal to Tressfx and I have heard around that its a fps drainer... The game i believe its more optimized to ATI cards, I have seen a little bit more fps on a 7970m with same settings, maybe a future drivers from Nvidia could get us more... I was using 314.07.

    Thanks.

Now maybe i'm just getting a little to undecicive but i'm reading a few more reviews on the the 680m and some websites were saying it now looses out to the AMD 7970 because of the new driver updates and the 680m w/o being OC'ed is a bit weak.

The benchmarks seem pretty good on the 680m but just a bit curious to know why some reviews are saying that if you dont OC this thing you are really loosing alot.

Also, is there any rumors or news about new Nvidia cards or new msi models coming out. i have been laptop searching since November and really want to get one soon. I know tech updates every other day but if a newer model is due in a month or so i would hold out a bit longer.

I can tell you by experience that, if you choose between AMD or NVIDIA you will not get disappointed with neither of them... Your experience with any of them will be yours, it could be good or bad, some say AMD has driver issues, others say they never had any problems,etc... Game benchmarks will depend on what card maker was optimized for, some games are made to run better on AMD than NVIDIA and viceversa, but that's something that with some drivers update in a near future can get a better performance. The subject of overclock (for me)_ its about if you want to squeeze your card when you know its out of date or if your not happy with the fps your getting because no matter how much you overclock your card you never going to get 40+ fps... At the end of day when your card can't theres nothing you can do other than get a new one.

    Hey guys,
I am in the process of upgrading my hdd drive to an ssd and installing windows 7 as windows 8 just seems too buggy for me to be messing around with. Is there anything i need to know or do prior to making the switch of hard drive and installing windows? any bios changes? I think i can get all drivers from msi's website but i just want to be sure i do the install properly. Thanks in advance guys.

Yes you do need to change in the BIOS boot option from UEFI to legacy mode otherwise the laptop won't boot from your Windows 7 DVD.

Hello, I'm late to the party but I just got a new GT60. I've been on Macs for several years but wanted a gaming rig. I have a few questions.
    1) What is involved in doing a clean install of Windows 8. Do I have to install from an iso and then manually install all drivers and MSI programs?
    2) What exactly does the turbo button do? Do I press it every time I want to play? Is it independent of the fan button?
    3) I downloaded the Sniper Elite V2 demo from Steam but it seems to run terribly whereas Far Cry 3 runs great in Ultra. Any ideas?
    4) Do games generally have a function to display frames per second?
    5) What do the geniuses here recommend to get the most performance of of this thing, new install, install from restore discs with certain options checked? I intend on getting an SSD this week, suggestions? I'd like 512 gb. What's the best value?

Thank you very much in advance.

    Hi,

    1. Yes. Downloading iso and installing it from scratch means you gotta install all your drivers and programs manually.
    2. It works as a secondary option if you feel your laptop its heating too much, it puts fans to run faster than it does to cool your laptop more.
    3. Maybe your drivers, maybe the game, Far Cry3 had problems at launch but were fixed quickly, Same with TombRaider, so you could start with your drivers and then if that doesnt work, check and see if its a game problem.
    4. Most of them, by tweaking their settings on an ini file or the ones who brings in-game console has commands to do it and some of them brings a benchmark test to see how your laptop/computer works.
    5. It's better if you start with a fresh install and clean all that stuff not needed, your ssd will be a good choice it will all depend on your $$.

The turbo button applies a small overclock to the graphics card while the fan button sets the fan speed to 100% until you switch it off.

    Hello, all.

There is a lot of talk about adding an SSD to an existing configuration, but my question is this:

Can I add another 2.5" internal HDD to my existing GT60 with 680M/750GB drive? Is there another free drive bay and connection to allow this? Or do I need to go with an SSD?

If I can do this, is it fairly simple? I just need a lot more storage and 7200RPM is good for me right now.

    Thanks!

    Hi All,

Just purchased the GT60 3 days ago, along with a Samsung 840 Pro SSD card. Unfortunately, the SSD card is not being read by the BIOS if I put it in the SATA III slot. It is only detected from the SATA II slot, but I want to put it into the primary slot to achieve 6 GB/s speeds and store the operating system.

EDIT: Fixed!!! Truth be told it was a boneheaded mistake, but it may have value to someone out there. When installing the SSD into the SATA III slot, be sure the male connector of the SSD is properly inserted into the female connecter of the machine. Since the Samsung SSD card is not as tall as the rotating HDD, the card could be resting below the actual female connecter, and you may not notice.

Cheers to you all, and go impress your friends with this beautiful machine!

    -Brett

I'm enjoying this new machine. I bought a Samsung 840 but have read that to get the full speed of this SSD you need different drivers that don't have a lot of features?? I haven't installed yet.
Does this SSD work correctly at full speed? If not, what SSD does work 100%?

    Thanks

Mobile devices don't allow any drive to perform at 100% to save power. This is however not an issue for 99% of users since it will be plenty fast enough.

Hey all... I am trying to us my TV via the HDMI port and am noticing that for whatever reason it is using the Intel HD integrated card and not my GTX 680M.

This makes for playing games lame... is there any way to force my laptop to use the GTX card for HDMI and not the Intel? or is the HDMI port connected to the integrated chip and not at all connected to my GTX..?

The HDMI port is soldered on with Intel HD Graphics controller on Optimus enabled mainboard. However, it won't affect any performance even the graphics is output via Intel HDMI port to your TV. when you play games it still use nVidia GPU and the image is render through Intel HDMI to your TV.

You can test by run 3DMark 11 on both laptop and to your TV using HDMI, the score will come out the same.

I've read through most of the thread but I was wondering if the USB 3 ports are capable of charging an iPad? And am I right in saying that you can charge devices while the computer is off as well? Can't wait to get this beast

Yes, the USB 3 have Super Charge technology which you can charge devices without having the computer on. Of course your battery will have to be powered or have power adapter connected.
