Reapplying thermal paste can be frustrating, but it is best to take your time to ensure an adequate amount is being applied. As meaker said, it is worthwhile to check the whole thing including thermal pads.

It also depends on the GPU itself. Not all GPUs are the same, some operate with higher temps than others. I had two 680m's, one always gamed around 85 C, the other ran around 80 C max temp. Both had the same thermal pads and paste applied.

Any pad rated at or above 5W/mK should be fine. 0.5mm remember.

How much of a difference will thermal pads change make? I still have my stock ones and they look a bit dirty and are falling apart. I've repasted recently but didn't do such a good job I think. During normal browsing use I get 50C average for CPU but 60C average for GPU :p I remember someone posting that when the power button is orange it means GPU is being used? Is some software using GPU or did I just do a bad repaste? Thanks and sorry for so many questions :33

Hi everyone Im new to the forum, I just got a hold of my new MSI GT60 2OD-261US 3K.

So far this computer is great, its so fast and the 3k screen is amazing.
I have just one issue that I have noticed and I don't know if it s a big problem or not.

When I am plugged in at home I get a static tingling feeling when I touch the case eg palm rests and the back of the screen. When plugged into the power in the office there doesen't seem to be any static feedback when I touch the palm rests etc.
I am wondering does anyone know what would cause this, is there any way to fix it and could this cause any damage to my system? I don't want to destroy my new system so soon..

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Sounds like you've got some dirty power with bad grounding. Typically static is discharged through the plug into the wall. There is a reason why I failed residential wiring in school though, so I may be wrong.

Hi I recently purcased Fujipoly Extreme thermal pads. Planning on changing my stock ones. If i change the ones on the gpu, is it a must to change the cpu thermal pads too? Also any guides or tips on how to properly replace thermal pads? What are dos and donts when changing? Thanks!

Cheers guys. I was talking to a few neighbors down the street and they were saying they seem to be having electrical problems as well. So this could be a problem coming from the sub station. Can this static build up on the case damage my computer?

NB Im running it through a surge protector just in case

Yes it could if you short out to the machine say through the usb port. You could damage the whole machine in a worst case.

Yeah, I'd definitely contact the power company and have them come out to run some tests. If they're unwilling to do anything about it, might want to look into a power conditioner to run your sensitive electronics off of.

But if his entire ground connection is floating a conditioner wont help. It's extremely dangerous.

The USB3.0 closest to the rear is the ACTIVE supercharger/icharger port. For it to work iCharger must be enabled in the BIOS!!!!!

I was looking at some of the heatsinks for the GT60 20D and was wondering whether it's possible to mod the existing heatsink to match that of the 20D or any place where one can buy it from? I think it would really reduce my CPU temps when GPU is not in use so lower temps = lower fan RPM = less noise :D

You can use the latest heatsinks yes, though it affects idle temperatures more than load.

Guys I really need your help to make a decision, the GT 60 with Windows 8 and GTX 680 is heavily discounted and I really want to buy it but I am afraid because of the following reasons:
    1) The laptop is officially discontinued
    2) I heard about Windows 8 updating issues
    3) I heard that there were some hard disk failures
    4) I heard MSI provides very little support because they no longer support the product
All of the previous is based on amazon reviews I read. But I want to ask the owner's themselves.Did you guys face these issues and if yes what are the solutions.I am just afraid something goes wrong and I end up with a laptop that does not work thanks

If you purchase it brand new you will get the full warranty as long as you're getting it from an authorized reseller.
If you think the specs fit your needs and you're getting a great deal go for it. It sounds like you know the worse part is getting outdated hardware.

    1. You can wait until the launch of new product lines in the upcoming months and you may be able to get current ones with discounts.
    2. Currently, only the Haswell ones have Win8.1 updates.
    3. Any issue can happen with any brand of NB, and HDD failure is one of them.
    4. MSI provides lifetime tech support for their products, regardless of remaining warranty or expired warranty.

The 680M setup is going to remain pretty competitive, it would need to be a fairly big discount on the current models to make it worth it though.

Yes, a 680M beats 770M and probably 870M is quite similar in performance; the 4.gen processors aren't much faster either. With discount a 680M is a good buy.

Using MSI afterburner how far can I overclock a GTX 680 without any BIOS updates or risking the damage of the card. How much would the performance gain be in %?and is the after burner better than the GPU boost 2.0 bec it does not have +135 mhz limit?

From what I know, cards produced aren't similar when being produced so yours could go +500 and mine could only go +400 for example. What I do is first overclock the memory to about 2000 or so. Then take the core clock a few steps ahead to around +100 or +150. For performance, you have to check in game itself. Benchmarks can only tell a story so far. For example I can get scores of a stock clocks 780M on 3DMark11 but when I play BF4 with those overclocks, it doesn't help with the FPS and I actually get better scores with stock settings. Mind you I am using svl7's vBIOS so you might get sudden FPS drops when your GPU starts hitting 85-90 C or even before that. Not sure about the second part of question.

Yes, every sample is different. However for the 680M the firmware itself comes into play and will start making the clocks behave erratically as you approach the +135mhz default limit.

Mu GTX 680M begins to downclock at about + 30 - 60 MHz... clocking higher just drops the benchmarks. 100% fan helps a little, even when the temperatures remain at or under about 80 C. But I don't mind, it's fast enough so far. Memory can be clocked upto almost 2500 MHz without adverse side effects.

You can install Windows 7 using the same BIOS & EC, but you do need to change UEFI mode to Legacy mode, or UEFI CSM. It's easy, just go to BIOS setup and then the boot mode, make the change, then press F10 to save and exit, that's it.

Does not really make a difference of course since in most applications dual channel ram wont make a huge difference and you still get 8GB of dual channel.

Owners of the GTX 680, even after 2 years your card remains a fierce competitor, congratulations on your smart investment. The new GTX 870 was said to be a 680 with less memory bandwidth and ROPS but major overclocking, so it was expected it would not perform a lot more than the 680. Yet gentech's test of the 870 on a gt60 msi dominator showed a graphics score of 7280 in 3D mark 11 that is 20% higher than the GTX 680's 5789 graphics score at stock frequencies. Does that mean the 870 performs 20% better than GTX 680 or is 3D mark 11 one of many tests and therefore is not conclusive? I ask because I am debating buying a discounted 680 like the one in your GT60 ONE or the 870 in the dominator..Thanks :)

3dmark 11 is at 1024x768 and is not designed to test this level of card.

However clocks make up for any losses of units.

    I have 2 issues/concerns..

    I have the GT60-ONE

    1st issue..
    Full battery..
As soon as I start a game like BF4 or Planetside2, the laptop just shuts off.. Even though the batter is full. It will power back on immediately after I press the power button..

    2nd issue.
While playing a game like BF4, COD Ghosts, Planetside2, TitanFall, after a few minutes in the middle of the game it will go back to windows and give me an error message about windows low on memory, even though only 25% is being used and my video memory has never been above 2GB..

Any thought or fixes you guys know of?

    Thanks in advance.

This is very important. Back when I had my GT70 barebones with 680m, I noticed it would shut down when playing with battery, as soon as the GPU got really taxed. It seems that the battery is unable to power the completely notebook so it always shut down. Needless to say that this never happened with the AC adapter connected.

As for the low memory windows thing. I noticed that I got the same message on my Asus N550, but mine was related to the page file memory which was a bit too low due to using a small SSD. I disabled it and I haven't had any issues with low memory warnings at all anymore.

Are there any major differences between features of GT60 0ne (680), GT60 2OD (780) laptops. Specifically is TDE technology as good as the 2OD's nvidia GPU boost, is the NOS feature present in both models?, is there a significant difference between 0ne's cooler booster, and 2OD's cooler booster 2.0?

Minor tweaks like having the hdmi and dp going to the dedicated card, the 780m is a little stronger. It all adds up to make it better over all.
