first post from my new gt60, so far this computer is great. just testing it out, downloading a few programs, make sure everything is in working order.
i belive i am going to really like this laptop. -
Amazing computer. I love everything about it. Only problem I've had is the ctrl button and space bar are sometimes a little hard to make register. My 3dmark11 score hit 7500 with the help of Saltius' VBios. I can't say how much I really love this computer!

Hey all,
I just read through this entire thread and wanted to make sure I got everything right, plus I have a few other questions.
1) How is the build quality, the last gaming laptop I had was a Gateway and felt about as solid as a wet noodle. It was also much less expansive so I'm hoping the price going up means the build quality does too.
2) Is the stock screen any good? I'd love to be able to do some serious work with my photography on the go. Does anyone know anything about the screen upgrade that the retailers offer, is it worth how much it costs?
3) From what I'm reading, the temps are good and just turn on the turbo fan when gaming for better cooling. Can you get a spare fan without having to RMA it? I have bad luck with fan bearings...
3b) How hard would it be to repaste it myself? I'm not worried about exposed dies on the card or cpu as that used to be the norm. More worried about ease of getting to them.
4) How is the stock wireless? I don't need mega transfer rates or insane ranges (Though I have a 3 antenna D-Link Gamer Lounge router) but I want a solid wireless option.
5) Is it possible to turn the backlit logo off? I go to night school with other adults and don't want to be blasting them with a lighted logo if the lights are dimmed for the projector or anything. If not, gaffers tape is always an option. Thinking of that is the keyboard lighting adjustable in brightness as well as color?
Thanks in advance for any help! -

1) Build quality is pretty good. It's much better than the average consumer Windows notebooks out there. Only business class notebooks like the Lenovo Thinkpads, Dell Precisions and HP Workstations would probably be better.
2) The stock screen is average in my opinion. It's acceptable for everyday tasks like web browsing, gaming, word processing etc... If you want to do some photography editing then I would recommend you upgrade to the 95% Matte screen. It would be worth as there is much better colour accuracy and reproduction.
3) Temperatures are quite acceptable given the specs of the notebook. I'm not sure if MSI would just mail you a replacement fan without having to send in the whole notebook. I would think they would make you send in the whole notebook. You can buy a spare fan online for around $50 though if you want.
3b) It's not hard at all. You just remove the bottom panel, move the fan out of the way (has 1 screw holding it in place) and unscrew the screws on top of the heatsink. They are very accessible.
4) Stock wireless is OK. It's just a single band card but it works fine. For everyday tasks and gaming I found it works just fine. No issues at all and its reliable. I recently upgraded mine to the Killer 1202 since it has dual band and built in bluetooth.
5) You can't turn off the backlit logo since it's controlled by the screen's LED...only way to turn it off is to turn off the screen. But I don't find it bothersome at all. I find the Apple one much more annoying and if you will be taking it to class I'm sure there will be some Macbooks there and their logo is much more prominent than the MSI one. For the keyboard, you can't adjust the brightness level but you can choose different shades of a colour that will in turn make the keyboard brighter or not.
Hope this helps! -

Many folks are TOO darn picky.....
ENJOY!

I'm probably going to get this,
I have a few worries however.
1) I currently have a w860cu, which weighs 7.4lbs, will I notice the .3lbs difference?
2) The w860cu is 1.68 inches thick, and the gt60 0ne is 1.8inches thick, again, will that be a big difference?
3) By doing benchmarks I concluded that the 0ne is 3 to 4 times better than my current laptop(6000-8000 3dmarkvantage score for my laptop, 20000-24000 for 0ne), do the scores work that way?
My laptop's starting to fail, I need a new one, and I did want to get a more portable one. Clearly the gt60 0ne isn't more portable, and I have noticed that the 9150 is quite a bit more portable, but I live in canada and don't want to have to deal with clevo/sager again, the MSI canada warranty is just too appealing.
I guess my main question is, while the 0ne is no more portable than the w860cu, will it seem less portable? -
A few more questions with subjective answers:
1. Does the keyboard ever stop responding, especially when only one key is being held?
2. Does the single mousebar on the GT60 supply good feedback? Does it ever feel as if it can deform? (I had this problem on my old laptop.)
3. How good is the keyboard for productivity? I've heard that Alienware models have better keyboards for the typical user.
4. Has anyone had issues with audio quality that can't be solved without peripherals? (E.g. Lack of bass.)
I'd appreciate comparisons with the Sager np9150 or Alienware m17x r4. -
Hey guys !

hey Guys, just got this laptop a few weeks ago and for the most part everything has been perfect. I'm OCD, so of course I have noticed one thing though. When the laptop starts to heat up and then cool off again, I'll get these creaks and snaps, and pops, not too loud but definitely noticeable. It's not a hard drive noise, and I've heard these kind of things with gaming laptops before, though typically ones with lower build quality. Maybe it could be some plastic "expanding" and "constricting"? Temperatures are fine, it's more of an annoyance at this point, but I don't want to wait around if it could be a symptom of something more serious. anyone else notice this? Thanks

Mine does the same thing

Good morning all!
I recently bought a GT60-0NE and last night the computer crashed while playing GW2. I'm 99.9999% sure its a driver issue with NVIDIA (BSOD mentioned nvidia kernel).
I've been trying to install the drivers ever since and I keep getting the following messages:
"NVIDIA Display settings are not available"
"You are not currently using a display attached to an NVIDIA GPU"
And if I look up the adapter in the device manager, it's either disaplyed as "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" with the following message:
"This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)"
"If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system"
If its listed as NVDIA GTX 680M, it'll display:
"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems"
Any help would be appreciated. I reinstalled windows because I modified my RAID0 setup, so maybe I installed the drivers improperly, I don't know.
Thanks in advance. -

These are they sound of they keyboard keys popping out. They will cure with usage. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks for all the info people. I now have a GT60 0NE-220US on the way from Best Buy. It should be in my hands Monday or Tuesday.

New driver that supports the 680M out now! - GeForce 306.23 Driver
Get it here: Drivers | GeForce -

I've added a FAQ section in the main post, just waiting for MSI to fix the OC issue so that I'll post some benchmarks. Sorry for the long wait.
-
Does anyone know of a way (besides phone) to contact MSI Corporate headquarters in Taiwan? I would love a email address?
Maybe they will sell me a super raid adapter. -
-
I too would like one eventually. I've added a single SSD, but two mstata ssd would be sweet.

I've had my GT60 for a few months now and it worked like a dream until just recently...my card reader stopped working properly!
It no longer locks the cover nor an SD card when I insert it. There's still the springy action but it doesn't lock in when I push it all the way through, making the cover just stick out of it and now I can't use it to read my SD cards
I last used it a couple weeks ago to upload photos and it worked fine. I had forgotten to put the cover back on and realized that after a few days. So when I went to pop it back in, it wasn't taking.
What could've possibly happened and what can I do about it?!!? -

So after a long wait due to being offshore for most of the time, I finally got my laptop. I am really happy with the unit. I ran 3DMark 11 with stock drivers and got a score of 6058. After updating my drivers I ran the software again but this time around my score decreased to 6002. Has anyone experienced anything like this.

OK. I just pulled the trigger on one of these from New Egg. I am feeling a bit nervous at the moment, which is natural when spending this kind of money. Hopefully, I will feel much better once I receive it and begin playing.

Nevermind I am an idiot.

After a month since ordering from Xotic, the GT60 finally arrived yesterday! Had a late night at work, but managed to squeeze in some time to get her set up and to play through the new Counter Strike for 20 minutes.
I went with the 680M card, 16gb ram, and solid state hard drive. So far, not regretting any of it, as the machine is super fast and cut through CS like a hot knife through butter. I can't wait to test it out on some more demanding titles like BF3. I also went with the Spyder color calibration. It's a little off-putting when you're just cruisin the internet, but you can easily disable and enable it on the fly. I still need to try it out while gaming.
I highly recommend using MSI Live Update 5 software - it will automatically update all your drivers for you.
They keyboard is great. I was worried the Steel Series might not be very responsive, but so far it hasn't missed a stroke - and I'm a light, quick typist. The backlighting is really nice too and you can easily turn it on and off.
The machine itself is rather large, and it's definitely a desktop replacement rather than a mobile solution. I can't imagine traveling with it on a daily basis. But when it's sitting on your desk, it really doesn't matter. Some people say the MSI laptops are garrish and ugly. I don't find that to be the case at all. Yes, the screen bezel is a bit glossy, but the rest of the machine is very handsome, especially the cover, which is brushed metal and gorgeous.
Much thanks to Roland @ Xotic for all his help before and after placing my order. He was very responsive and professional. Even though the unit was back ordered for a bit, he kept me well informed of its status.
So yeah overall, I highly recommend the GT60 for both its quality and performance thus far. -

Why did msi decide to discontinue this model? It just came out a couple of months ago. I was going to get one but now a lot of the carriers simply don't have it in stock. Contacted msi and they also said it's being discontinued. They didn't say why or what will be replacing this awesome computer. Bummer, now I'm going to have to reconsider the mbpr XD.
-
Really? Are you sure?
I was planning on buying this computer late December(I live in Canada, and will be going to florida for two weeks).
I guess MSI will release a new gt60 with a new, un-announced gpu. Hopefully it will be before December!
What do you guys think? -
I wouldn't be surprised if MSI "discontinued" them so they can ship them with Windows 8 instead.
-
The first thing I did was swap throw the primary partition with OS on a 256GB SSD and I use the 750 GB for storage. Opening photoshop in 3 seconds is a wonderful thing.
I am a little nervous about this laptop being discontinued days after I received mine. This happened to me with an ASUS, and next thing you knew, everyone and their mother was complaining about a flaw with the DC jack that began appearing with many owners. I hope this is not the case with this laptop, but the 2 year warranty should have me covered in any case.
If anyone is on the fence about Sager vs MSI, as I was, I am more than happy with my decision. The sound alone is enough to convince me that I made the right decision. -
I saw it was discontinued on newegg, so I got mine off ebay. They reseller was very quick, they made mine per my order and I got it 3 or 4 business days after I ordered! It was obviously new, and in perfect shape. No dead pixels or anything.
-
mmmm wonder why this laptop was discontinued? i am really enjoying mine so far, zero complaints.
just a reminder to those who recently received theirs, make sure you send the required paperwork to MSI and register you item online to activate your warranty. -
I am curious if the laptop being discontinued has to do with the announcement of the GX60... More can be found here.
-
Phew!
It's being re-released with a better processor.
I emailed Xoticpc, got this response
-
That is good news! Not worth an upgrade by any means, but nice to see them keep it up to date and not disappear completely.
-
When do you think the i7 4th gen will come out?
And the gtx780m? -
And as for the discontinuation, its the SKU that is discontinued and not the whole model. Nothing to worry about. New SKUs will probably be available with the launch of Windows 8. -
Just wondering- are any of the USB ports powered USB ports? Like do they have the "charge phone while computer is asleep/ even off" function?
