    Didnt work.

The first time I ran DDU in safe mode to clean out intel and nvidia drivers. Then reinstalled intel, rebooted, installed nvidia, rebooted. Normally, at this point it would be working but the condition persists.

The second time I uninstalled all the software in windows, then went into safe mode and ran DDU for good measure. Continued reintsalling drivers as described above. Same condition. Light is orange, but no application runs on the dedicated GPU.

I know this is a software problem. Maybe im not modifying the inf file properly.

This is what I added into the manufacturer section
    %NVIDIA_DEV.13D8.110C.1462% = Section128, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D8&SUBSYS_110C1462

This is what I added into the strings section
    NVIDIA_DEV.13D8.110C.1462 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M "

If it is the driver, then its the section portion of the string that is incorrect as it dictates exactly which driver is installed from the package for the particular card.

What section did you use in your modified inf file as the 970m's that are "13D8.110C.1462" point to several sections?

    EDIT:

I figured it out. Section 027 for windows 7 is the right pointer for the driver for this card.

Firestrike gets 6410 3d marks vs 3185 on the old 670mx(oc'd to +200 core +500 mem).

Thank you to all you pioneering folks for making this possible.

I know this is not in the correct forum but I could not find an answer anywhere else. I was wondering about upgrading the CPU on the msi gt60-2od. Can this laptop be upgraded to the 5th or 6th generation CPU? Or does it have to stick with 4th gen CPU. I currently have the i7-4700mq. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

You are sticking with 4th gen. 5th gen is broadwell and 6th gen is skylake which is an entirely different architecture.

Processor is soldered onto PCB since 5th generation therefore you can't really upgrade your system at all.

A 4820mq would be a nice option, same generation but has a fair kick to it.

I upgraded my MSI GT60 16f3 barebones from a 3840qm to a 3920XM. Now I'm constantly experiencing the blue screen of death and some freezing with this XM CPU. I want to know what's the problem. Need help with this ASAP. Thank you

MSI has never tested the 55W CPU, and their qualified processors are only supported up to 45W max. Try updating the BIOS & EC to the latest version with old processor and try again.

I'm on the latest bios right now 51x from svet and I'm on the latest EC firmware too; I just can't remember its number. I managed to get the computer working by reinstalling windows. I can overclock but I can't go past 4GHZ on all cores. Anytime I go 4.1 GHZ or higher on all cores it crashes. People have said that they can do a stable overclock of about 4.4 to 4.6 GHZ on all cores with this processor. That's what I had hoped to achieve. Anyone who could tell me how to get there your technique would be greatly appreciated

Processors were not made equal, some can perform exceptional when overclocked and some simply sink therefore your mileage varies.

Does anybody know if the GTX 980 desktop can be modified to work on a MSI GT60? I haven’t seen any post on that topic. In the past they said that there would be no MXM modules of that card but I saw it for sale on eBay. It looks like the normal MXM 3.0 to me but it’s a bit larger than the normal cards. I know it might be a 200 watt card but I’ve a 330 watt adapter on my laptop before. If it’s not compatible, will the upcoming pascal series be like the normal MXM 3.0 b series that they’ve making over the past few years with 100 watt power consumption? Or was the GTX 980M the last upgradable card for the MSI GT60?

It cannot be done, the GTX 980 is not desktop version.
Also, GT60/GT70 will not benefit from wattage exceeding 180W due to design limitation unless you have unlocked EC firmware.

So what about the upcoming pascal series, will it be compatible with the MSI GT60/70? Or was the GTX 980M the last upgrade? Would be sad if there’s no future upgrades for my laptop

I would say it's up to Nvidia & MSI to decide whether to provide such upgrade or not.
Gotta wait until the water clears up.

I have an MSI 1762 currently working with the 980m since about August. I used bios .51x and I don't remember what firmware but I can get the number if need be. I'm running Windows 10 64bit. I was only able to get it to run with a modded inf driver. I'm currently running an unsigned 353.75. While the card does work the system is buggy, for instance, I can no longer stream to my tv using Widi. I was fine with that, but I just got star wars battlefront, and it is telling me I can only play if I have the nvidia driver version 355.80 or above. I think 361.43 is the latest driver. Is there any way to mod a newer driver to get it to work on my system? I'm sorry if I overlooked how to do this on the forum, this is my first time posting here. Just looking for some direction. Or if anyone got the 1762 to work with the regular drivers or less buggy, I'd love to know how it was configured. I can't install the geforce experience on my system anymore, it never gets past the system check, in fact, no program or webpage like that detects any of my hardware anymore. It's a price I'm willing to pay though, the main concern here is whether I can play battefront or not. Very frustrating.

Kudos to fallout 4 for playing flawlessly with no b.s.

Hi, I posted on here recently about upgrading my MSI GT70 2PE from the 880M to 980M and I was able to successfully accomplish this. Temps are great, performance is great, but, after attempting to connect to an external display, I ran into an issue.

First, I encountered a BSOD with the error PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. In subsequent attempts, my laptop screen would just go black and nothing would change on the external monitor. Fyi, I bought a Clevo card for the upgrade which, to my knowledge, is fully compatible with the notebook. Anyone have any words of wisdom for going about trying to troubleshoot this issue? I have explored the problem thoroughly online but couldn't find anything useful. Please let me know if you can help.

    Thanks,
    Marko

    Eh guys,

I am thinking of upgrading my ivy bridge cpu (3610qm). Which is better when you overclock it in terms of less heat? 3820qm vs 3840qm, vs 3940xm? When I look at it in online merchants, it seems that the price are on the same level... Can you give me any advice? Thanks a lot

What kind of processor you have? if it's a haswell processor then I can say ( in my opinion) is that your ac adapter (180watts + your battery which gives 10% boost) and the heat issue is holding your oc. Even if you manage to mod and put a 240 watts or even a 330watts ac adapter for your MSI GT nb, still a haswell type of nb can only handle180watts.

Not like ivy and sandybridge you can use more than 180 watts of ac adapter.. look on my signature. Yes that's what I've been using for a long time now and it's kicking ass (240 watts ac adapter) :)

Sorry to say this but our GT models can ony handle up to 980m. the GTX980 desktop mxm board is much bigger and eats more than 100 watts. Aside from that, the size is much bigger compared to an mxm 3.0 watts board.

I’m on 3920XM right now. That’s Ivy Bridge. I used to have a 330 watt Dell adapter. I did not need to modify it because I had a pin for it that made it fit into my GT60. Svet told me that the EC firmware he gave me would allow me to use more than 180 watts. My bios is unlocked as well. One question; is there a way to check if you are benefiting from using an adapter more than 180 watts like the 240 and 330 watt ones? I asked this because when I had the 300 watt I didn’t notice any difference

Do you anything about the upcoming Pascal cards? Are you saying that the 980M was the last upgrade for the GT60/70? Is there any chance the Pascal models will be like the Maxwell models?

Just sold my 3840QM on eBay for $200. I was getting it to 4.2GHZ with ease. I was doing 4GHZ on all for core and the heat was not a problem. Now I’m running the 3920XM and it’s only slightly hotter than the 3840QM.

Can anyone help me mod the latest driver? 361.43. I can't seem to get it to work. I'm running windows 10, 64 bit. The location of my card is PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_110B1462, I believe. Any help would be greatly appreciated! My card was working, then I tried to do this, and now no driver will install for my card, I'm very concerned. Thanks in advance!

    Hello.

I had someone help me upgrade from my 680M to 980M a couple days ago but I came across the same problem you had. Which is that my laptop only ever uses the Intel card and ignores the 980M no matter if I set applications to use it or not. Games do not detect the 980M card either. So I tried installing a newer Nvidia driver and now I am getting black screen with mouse cursor like your situation before. I also tried installing with modded INF but with same result. Have to uninstall Nvidia to get the screen back on. So I wonder if you can help me out and clarify some questions for me since I have very little experience especially with the BIOS stuff.

    1. First of all some information about my setup. I have MSI GT70 + BIOS: E1762IMS.71X (3/28/2014) + Windows 8.1. If you need more info please let me know.

    2. I don't know if my 980M is Clevo or MSI. It probably is MSI since the shop I bought it from they mainly sell MSI stuff. In this case, I read that I can still flash the Clevo vBIOS right? Which one should I download from Prema? GTX9 MXM or GTX9 MXM-G?

    3. In what state should I flash the vBIOS? Right now I have Nvidia driver uninstalled using DDU and in Device Manager it displays as "Microsoft Basic Disney Adapter". Can I flash the vBIOS now? Or should I install some Nvidia driver so it shows the 980M card at least?

    4. You said that the only working driver you tried for Windows 8.1 is 353.12. I downloaded it from Guru3D.com since the link on LaptopVideo2Go is dead. Then I grabbed the modded INF from LaptopVideo2Go. Will that work? Or do you have a backup copy of it from LaptopVideo2Go that you can send me? Also, according to Guru3D this driver is for desktop not laptop - is that alright?

    5. Also for INF, you wrote "INF mod them to work with the above". Is there a special instruction for it to work with Prema vBIOS or will using the INF downloaded from LaptopVideo2Go be enough?

    Thank you.

    UPDATE:

I got it working!! Thanks to samXLR's guide. I followed it pretty much exactly. I didn't use the driver from LaptopVideo2Go though. I used an official driver from Nvidia but I did use LaptopVideo2Go's modified INF.

Also huge thanks to [null] from http://null-bin.blogspot.com for helping me out with everything. He answered all my questions very clearly so I was able to go through all the steps to get it working. =D

Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge both benefit when using more than 180 watts ac adapter. Only Haswell models are affected.

Now for your second question... Try oc'ing both your gpu and cpu. if your ac adapter can handle the wattage during load times and everything is doing well, then I can say is your adapter is good. Once your adapter cannot handle the load, it will shutdown or make a restart of your nb. Unless you have any other ideas on how to measure the wattage of your nb and see if your ac adapater can handle it then you also answered your question :)

Btw.. what ec firmware ver you using? we both have the same model

    My Bios version is E16F3IMS.51X

My EC firmware version is 16F3EMS1 VerT . 18

I don’t have a GPU anymore. I sold my 980M a while back. I might get another 980M if there isn’t any future upgrades for the MSI 16F3/GT60/70. But just for curiosity sake, I wanna know what program you use for overclocking your GPU because every time I overclocked my 980M the driver used to crash. I bought a 330 watt adapter and the driver still used to crash no matter if I overclock in small or large amounts at a time. Just want to know what program you use and what’s your strategy? We have the same laptop so that means if you can overclock I should be able to do it too. I might have been doing something wrong

No problem with the new models or up coming models of NVidia. As long as the wattage and dimension for our nb is the same.. See the pic for reference (GTX 980 mxm desktop board vs our current mxm board).

    Now you know why.

Afterburner only. I've been using this when I purchased my nb. No crashing problems with me. and i'm only using a 240watts dell adapter.. maybe your oc with the cpu or bclk is the culprit? don't oc your bclk. try only the stock bclk speed of 100 mhz. Or maybe your gpu is overheating? remember to make the pads and the gpu lapped very well on the gpu heatsink. My idle temp for my gpu is between 38-41 degrees celcius only.

I noticed the clear differences. I really hope that pascal will be compatible. I guess I’ll be waiting with great anticipation. In the photo with the 980 MXM desktop there are two different cards. Does that mean there are two different layouts of the 980 MXM desktop? Also do you have any idea of when the pascal series will be launched?

When I tried overclocking, I never messed with the CPU. I only used stock speeds. I noticed that your EC firmware is VerT.19 vs my VerT.18. Does that matter? Is the EC firmware version playing a role here?

I think it's not with the ec firmware. Maybe your windows is messed up? or try a fresh installation of your windows first? My 970m isn't doing any crash problems at all.

Overclocking is one thing, but are you gaining any performance? A few months ago I noticed that you were writing in a different forum where you complained that when you overclock you were getting less performance. I think you said you were playing a “Dirt” racing game and you were getting less FPS when overclocked. Another question is are you able to get your 970M up to 980M speeds? If the answer to this is yes, then I’ll consider getting a 970M instead of a 980M because the vendors are fully aware that the new 980 MXM desktop is not compatible with the regular MXM models therefore they are showing no interest in dropping the price of the 980M. I can’t believe that a 980M is still going for $720 to $890 these days. If there had been a release of a regular MXM model, the 980M would have been presently going for about $500 to $600. That’s not fair by these vendors.

I think I resolved that issue a long time ago and I used to have a 680m before 970m. I've managed to reach firestrike score of almost 7,5k score with a 3610qm. That's why i'm thinking of upgreading my cpu.

Didn't you know that' there are older mxm NVidia gpu's like 580m that sells for that price up to now?

I’m fully aware of 4 to 5 year old cards going for big money but that’s just ridiculous. I paid $820 for my 980m about a year ago but I wouldn’t do it now. This card is over a year old and had Nvidia had a new release for the regular MXM 3.0b notebooks it would not be selling for $720 to $890 as if it were a new card. As for your CPU, the 3840QM would do well. It has a +400MHZ overclocking ability which I used to do with ease. My settings were 4.0GHZ on 4 cores. 4.1GHZ on 3 cores and 4.2GHZ on single core. But I wasn’t satisfied. One day while surfing eBay I noted someone had three 3920XM for $235 each. I didn’t hesitate. I immediately listed my 3840 for $220 and it sold within one hour. In total, I only lost about $25 on my upgrade after paying eBay 10% of the selling price. This was an excellent upgrade in terms of what I spent. Now with the 3920XM, although I had some trouble overclocking when I had just received it, now I’m doing a good 4.3GHZ on all four cores. My laptop is so freaking fast right now it’s not funny. Just be aware that the 3920XM will run slightly hotter than the 3840QM but nothing to get worried about. At least that’s the situation in my case

That seems like a good option. What would be the highest performing cpu I would be able to upgrade to?

180 Watt brick should be sufficient with stock clocks (no BSODs).

Hi all hope your all good,

This is an awesome thread! first of all i would like someone to confirm msi_lovers work that MSI WHITEBOOKS/BAREBONES are flashable with MSI BIOSES/FIRMWARE safely with a little tweaking???

    ok i have a cyberpower fangbook hx7-200 its an MSI -1763 board/chassis same as a MSI GT70.

can you guys confirm my laptop is upgradeable to the GTX 980m safely????

Im also confused at something.... my bios number ends with .70P (E1763ICP.70P) so that means its super raid bios right? although i dont have my hdds setup as raid i have sata ssd and sata hdd combo but in bios i can select ahci or raid etc... so how do i know which bios to flash exactly?

the ec fimware bit is even wierder.... i have ec firmware version 1763EG62 Ver7.15, 03/07/2014 on msi website it says make sure your bios matches the same number tree file syntax (if your notebook is equipped with version 1763EMS 1 ver 3.00, then the firmware file you need is 1763EMS 1. 3XX but all the ec firmwares that have a 2 in them and start with v7.xx dont have backlit keyboard support and my ms -1763 have a blue backlit keyboard.

so im basically confused which file to flash for my whitebook.

    thanks all.
