Well, i managed to buy a 99% "new" gtx 780M and i'm very happy with it. Just have a brand new CG with new pads/thermal pads i have better fps everywhere. It was really plug and play. Didn't found the true original MSI one on ebay but found one in AliExpress. It took time to arrive from china but it's working and i have my HDMI output back, so happy...

I believe you do update to a newer BIOS and EC to get it recognized. Perhaps checks on the forum for old posts while waiting for someone who can post the files here for you. :)

hey there, I currently have a MSI GT683R

I have understood (I am not 100% sure) that the GTX970M will just work fine on this device (with the obvious heatsink modification).

But which GTX970M in specific do I need to buy? I can currently find only the N16E-GT-A1, they say it is compatible with the Clevo P150SM-A (and lots of other notebooks, the GT683R is also included but in a different model number.. i think.)

Should I also flash the Vbios when I recieve it? I have never flashed a Vbios before and I am a little scared that I brick this GPU...

If the upgrade is incompatible, could someone tell me?

Only a few companies made the card so it's either MSI or Clevo here. Also, to flash VBIOS it's recommended to make a backup of it first before flashing. If you do brick it *knock on wood* you can do a blind recovery, or get a SPI programmer to restore it.

making a backup of the Vbios makes a lot of sense really. But do you think the upgrade would go well on this one? since this one in specific does not support optimus.

You may have to dig further on the forum for the discussion that some members had done in the past. Can't say how it would turn out when you do it now. If you check with Svet at MSI forum perhaps he can provide assistance that would help you to get what you want to do done with none to little risks.

Alright, i'll have to see if I should do this or just replace the dying GTX560M with... another GTX560M :p

Thanks for the help. If I am gonna do this mod, i'll definitely return. But before I have all the material required, it would probably take a few months.

after some research, I have figured out it should pretty much 100% work on the GT683R (MS-16F2) There are people that have done this with the 17,3 inch model (GT780DX, MS-1761) and confirm that it is working wonderfully, so I am leaning more towards the straight upgrade to the GTX970M. I am still gonna cautious about the Vbios flash when I am gonna do this. (it's gonna take a few months before I can even start buying the GPU though... :()

    here are some sources:

As even GT70 0xx (MS-1762) series needed modified Vbios E1762IMS.51X or 71X to work with GTX9xx series I suppose you need to flash too.

I am not sure, the GT70 series run on the 3rd gen, I am certain this Bios flash won't work. So far, people who have a GT683R with the GTX970, have only modified the heatsink and installed the GPU (and flashed it's Vbios)

I have already searched here before, unfortunately no one even tried it before the thread got locked. Only one person merely suggested it, he refers to this post I think. quoting it here under:

    " Hi,

I upgraded to a 7970m a couple of years ago, it worked fine but now I'm getting vertical lines crash and the card may be dead.

I'm considering upgrading to a 970m or 980m as it looks possible according to the 970m-980m upgrade thread.

Has anybody tried that on this 16f2 and which heatsink did you use?

    Thanks"

Have you forced individually those exes that start on HD4000 to use Nvidia? On Nvidia Control Panel, 3D settings?

Sometimes you must force the individual exe to use Nvidia, a global setting may not be enough. Pick the exe from a list or search the path to the exe to add it to the list.

    Hello there,

It is nice to see a thread since 2014 and active up to date. I raise my hat for the author of this thread.

I have one issue with my Graphic card. My laptop is MSI GT70 2OD-039US Dragon Edition with NVIDIA GTX 780M.

in 2018 I've upgraded the GPU to NVIDIA GTX 980M and the person I've bought this card from him mod my driver version 399.24 and it was working perfectly.

Now I've formatted the whole laptop and install a clean windows copy with all drivers except the GPU.

I'm stuck since I don't have the mod (.inf) file and I tried to follow the steps on the same version 399.24 and the new version 445.75. I can install the drivers But it is not working

The system detect the GTX980M and showing it in my devices list. But whin I run 3Dmark or GPU-Z render, it is not detecting this driver and it is run on Intel HD Graphic 4600 only.

I've put the setting of Nvidia GTX to use the high performance GPU GTX 980m and to use only Nvidia GPU and 3D and all other settings. also I set the battery setting to use the max perforemance for the bettary. and still I have the same issue.

I need someone to help in this issue since the GPU is a major thing in gaming laptop and now it is really useless and disappointing to not have a GPU woring.

    Looking for your reply

I am still waiting for my gtx 980m card to arrive but is there anything else i need to do? do i need to flash my EC firmware as well? my EC firmware is 1762EMS1 Ver 4.14. If i need to flash it where i can do it and to which version?

Hi, sorry for bumping an old thread, but I am acquiring an 980M to plug into a gt70 (its an upgrade I have done before).

problem is that the vbios was flashed for MSI use the first time, this time I will need to do this myself or use modded I inf files.

would anyone be able to assist me with acquiring a legitimate download of a 980m vbios flash? I have found the below link on another site but no idea if it’s legitimate or not.

    https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/172336/172336

    thanks in advance!

    Hello Colleagues,

What an awesome work is done here on this thread!

I am an owner of MSI GT70-20C Laptop. Last week, my GTX 770m burned, tried reballing process but cannot be fixed.
After many reading, and consultation i have ordered GTX 970m 6gb, here is the link:
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000431123115.html?spm=a2g0o.cart.0.0.947f3c002hZOFa&mp=1

I have a question to all the experienced people here:
My current bios version is: E1763IMS.51B, so shall i install new bios like i fond this two or i am wrong:
    https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/209128/209128
    https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/209769/209769

I read also, everyone is modifying the heatsink.Any advice from that, to my specific laptop?

    Thank you all in advance!!!

Those are BIOS for the GPU, not system BIOS; you should be using latest BIOS for the laptop, that you download from MSI website, update both BIOS and EC firmware.
Then if the card gives you trouble you start trying other VBIOS.

Before bolting the heatsink to the GPU, try to just mouting it on the card outside the laptop to check for any interference between the heatsink and the GPU, you might need to grind some high spots on the aluminium part of the heatsink, or you will crush and kill your card.

Since its a 970m all you need to use is nvflash:
    https://www.techpowerup.com/download/nvidia-nvflash/

And you can search for nvflash tutorials on youtube on your mother tongue(not sure if you are a native english speaker, so a tutorial in your mother tongue might be easier to follow).
Just remember ALWAYS backup the original VBIOS, but I doubt that you need to flash the GPU VBIOS.

    Hello,

I just received a GTX980m (which apparently comes from a GT72) for my GT60 (ivy bridge) bought used on ebay.

The problem is that the gt60 refuses to turn on when this card is in the MXM slot, while it boots with my GTX770M or with the empty MXM slot.

Is it sure that the 980M is damaged or can the problem come from elsewhere?

    Bios: 51x
    EC: T18

    Help!
    Thank you in advance.

Can you try and see if it outputs a video signal when using the HDMI to an external monitor or TV? I would lean towards the vBIOS. If you had a cheap usb programmer you can write a Clevo vBIOS to the card which is what most people were using. Looks like your EC and BIOS are all correct for the upgrade.

    Hello Talon,
Thanks a lot for your answer.
I can not test via hdmi, because the problem is that the card completely prevents the GT60 from power on, as if it were not connected and without battery.
As soon as I remove the 980, the PC turns on properly.

Is there any signs of damage on the card?
Chip GPU die, discoloration on the top edge, anything at all?
If the laptop doesn't turn on, that would maybe indicate that there is a short in the card.

    Hi Senso,
    No signs of gross damage.
My first idea was actually that the card must have been damaged by an over voltage due to a faulty motherboard.

I just wanted to know if it was possible that a good card prevents the GT60 from starting for another cause ??

I think I'll have to do whatever it takes to get my money back now.
especially that I paid a high price in auction (255 €)

    thank Zipperi.
It is compatible with the GT60 16F3 ?

Is it possible that the EC T18 prevents the GT from power on ?

    If yes, I will try

    Thanks very much

    EDIT :
I made a return request via ebay.
    Problem solved therefore.
    Thank you all

    EDIT 2 :

The seller refuses the return of the 980M on ebay, I was forced to transform into a paypal claim ...
As i am not sure i can be reimbursed, I am always looking for a possible solution. The real question is whether it is possible that a valid MXM card prevents the power supply of the pc? I have heard of problems with the GSYNC function? The vBios can prevents the power on of the GT60 ?

Note : Sorry for my bad english :/

Yes, but not the gtx 980m. 100W consumption is not so much. He needs vbios and a modified driver.

I would need an Nvidia Quadro P5200 Max-Q vbios.
    MSI, but others may come.
