If we have known it, then 75% of the notebookreview/sickdeals people like us would have taken down the entire inventory of Dell's XPS.
You know what I mean.![]()

Play-safe + warranty-kick-in + better cooling or whatnot = $1000 and up! -
Good quality components (Intel motherboard, transcend memory, seagate hard drive, eVGA video card, PC P&C power supply) with good warranty.
I'd say you can do a config that beats this laptop for $700.
In fact, if I get this laptop and decide to keep it, I'll be selling my desktop which performs very similarly to this laptop but ultimately is a bit better for $600.
So yeah, you can definitely beat this system in a desktop for less money. But it's a desktop, desktops are cheaper. -
Thanks for the mid-range price, Hep! -
Update to you guys this morning. Did you find that the 9800M GT SLi Dual disappeared in the regular configuration page of M1730? That's definitely because all of us got into the deal so Dell is running out the stock of 9800M GT SLi Dual.
-
yah, the funny thing is you have to pay additional $400 for hardware upgrade of 2gb ram to 4gb and 160gb harddisk to 320gb. Only then you will have the option to upgrade to 9800m sli. Dell is trying very hard to earn back the money they've lost due to their "market error" lol
-
Dam I wish I kept mine, I was one of the few who got this order, but then got a better deal on this dell precision. I might be able to ask for mine back if anyone is interested.
-
Last night, someone was selling xps m1730 x9000 with 8gb ram, 9800m sli and raid hard 640gb for only $2200 on ebay. He was claming that it was brand new but replaced the dell box due to minor damage on the box. I was so sceptical when it didn't come with original dell box that I didn't buy it. Now that I think of it, I think I should have bought it.. what do you guys think??
-
Did they offer anything that normally doesn't come with a system like dual boot?
-
I've been watching this thread for awhile, and I originally ordered one of these laptops on 5/15. Like some people, I never received a confirmation email but did get an acknowledgment email. I called the modifications department on 5/19 and was able to push my order through. I just checked on my Order Status today and looks like it has been shipped! Hopefully everything works out and thanks to the OP for the deal
-
i really think that they ship the computers based on how much money they lose per computer.
mine was cancelled, i think, because they wanted to try to squeeze me for another few hundred $$.
bs.
the search for a new laptop begins. -

LOL.........that's what I paid for mine!!! But mine came wrapped in a 1730 -
you should know that nowadays labtops are equipped with single GTX280m 1gb. You wouldn't want to pay sli for over $1000 considering that single GTX280m outperforms sli.
-
Since I missed that $999 deal, I'm considering purchasing i7 based laptop. I wonder when Dell is gonna introduce it.
-
Well, the sagers have gtx280m but they START at 1600ish and do not have 1920x1200 res, among other options you might want to get up to speed which will bring you closer to 2k.
As for i7 based laptops, sager also has one that uses the desktop part. The thing supports THREE hard drives! Also it starts at 2kish.
So yea, gtx280m does exist, but it costs a bit more. A bit more compared to the deal that is. -
@jimmywong
Hey, I ordered mine last sunday (6 days since order date as of this post) and mine is STILL in production. What is the modifications department number you called? The person on the phone said that it usually takes two weeks to be in production. I call B.S. to that considering my order was mostly the stock configuration. I've read a couple of posts where people manage to get their orders pushed through so hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.
Edit: Holy crap, I double posted without realizing it! -

haha sorry.

@zergslayer69
I actually called the Modifications Department through another forum that I visit ([H]Forum) and the number there was 1-800-247-2076. The person I talked to said that my order just didn't go through the right way and helped me get a new PurchaseID/Order Number.
@DocSurge
My ship date was 5/23/09 and order date was 5/19/09. -

They seem pretty strong so far, but a little warm, idle @70c. Gonna do some benches later this week.
-
My order actually shipped today. I ordered it on 5/15. The only upgrades I made were the processor (T8300, 2.4GHz), HDD (500GB), Bluetooth, and the wireless card. Invoice says I got the dual 9800M GTs, so I guess all is good. Of course, I won't fully believe that until the computer is in my hot little hands.

sorry for out of topic, look at this. what a horrible performace for gtx280m equipped with core i7 extreme 965. 3dmark06 just 13k and vantage p6786

i just imagine if ocz whitebook equipped core i7 965 could reach 3dmark06 18k
just think about what synthetic benchmark for the rig equipped with 280m and x9000, i guess 12k 3dmark06 -

Ah I see, 6/3/09 with 2Day Shipping.
-
wow! mine supposedly shipped today for delivery the 29th. I had upgraded CPU to T8300 and added bluetooth.
I had originally ordered on the 16th but only had order acknowledgment. I called on the 18th and got passed around for an hour between sales and modifications. I then talked to sales for about an hour with the rep trying everything to determine how I got that price. Mostly I just stayed quiet when she said it must be a mistake. Her supervisor would not approve the price, but after about an hour she told me to go to "wwwdell.com/quote" where I entered in my quote and customer numbers. I had gotten the quote number from an earlier rep and she gave me the customer number. I was then able to essentially re-order the system and received a confirmation in a few hours. I'm not sure why the second order went through, but maybe the /quote is a work around. -
Still waiting for mine to get shipped
... I have no patience.
Ordered on the 20th, Estimated delivery is June 5th :X...
I hope it arrives this week somehow =/ -

Compare a single GTX280M to a *single* 9800M/8800M.
No one said it was going to beat an SLI or Xfire rig, as it shouldn't. No shocker a Whitebook Xfire, 9262 SLI or W90Vp mops the floor with the single card.
3Dmark06 is very CPU dependent, so if you want to even consider it, just take the SM2.0/3.0 scores and the Vantage GPU scores.
Of course it isn't faster than a desktop 8800 GTX. The GTX280M is roughly a same clocked 8800GTX (desktop) basically with a 256-bit memory interface vs. 384-bit on the 8800GTX. We're talking mobile parts here. If you want to compare your desktop parts, compare it against a real desktop 280 GTX card.
I'm more interested in the numbers of an SLI M98 for comparisons. -
-
Congratz to the people with shipment notices, you can look up your service tag number from your invoice, and confirm your video cards before it arrives.
-
I got sick of my order being stuck at "order processing" so I gave Dell a call.
They told me my credit card company denied the payment request because they thought it was fraudulent.
Awesome how no one told me this (neither my bank, credit card company, nor Dell).
Should hopefully get it all sorted out Monday/Tuesday though. -
lol

Nvidia took a huge marketshare afterwards, that's when ATI went back to design the RV700 GPU line but even after benchmarks shows stock 4870s beating GTX260/GTX280, Nvidia still holds majority of the marketshare today.
On the notebook GPU side, I much rather take the newer GPUs using less power and smaller die than the older GPUs which has the higher chance of defects due to the packaging of the GPU. -
My order was canceled because I didn't sort out the payment issue. This happened to me when I ordered one of my Inspiron 1520s and when that happened it was a simple phone call to fix, but I don't feel like it because I don't even want the laptop anymore.
I might try to get it still, but mehhhhh.
It's just increasing amounts of work to get something I don't even want. -
Can't blame you for not wanting to pursue something you dont even want , though im sure there were others who wouldnt have minded getting in on the deal
. Would be a tough decision if the only reason your getting it is just to pass on the saving's to someone else as there is really nothing in it for your time etc.
-
You could always try pursuing the deal and sell it to someone else and make a bit of profit. No need to gouge anyone, but just make some profit.
-
If anyone wants to make some offers, I'll consider it.
-
If you go back a few pages there's at least 2 people who were interested in the deal. Forgot who in specific. But they're there. Maybe you can pm them.
On a side note, where can I buy a x9000 these days? Ebay doesn't have any for stock. And one of the sellers "dealsunlimited" seemed to have been a scam, luckily I didn't buy one from him. -
if u cant find it just get a X7800.... at least its a extreme processor and it is half of the price (around 200 bucks)
-
-
-
That's my thought for M15x, but if you are using M1730 and you don't mind a little more heat with little OC, yes, getting an X7800 seems like a good choice. -
-
Isn't a m1730 limited to FSB(800)? Oh and while I'm at it, do these 2 parts work with the m1730?
SSD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231256
RAM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227251
I picked that particular ssd even though there's a cheaper gskill because of the much faster read/write times. I figure since I'm not buying one every 2 months I may as well spend a little extra for a bigger performance gain.
As for the ram, I dunno, they're all about the same price. I'm open for other suggestions if these aren't compatible.
Edit: And about the x7800, I haven't heard people mentioning it at all so that's why I didn't even know there was another extreme cpu choice. Since the x9000 can be overclocked in the bios from 2.8ghz to 3.4ghz, how far can the x7800 2.6ghz be overclocked to if at all?
