    Is that this: http://www.compusa.com/products/pro...2+667mhz&N=200129&Ntk=All&product_code=344987 ?

Just so others know (if that is the RAM), that it is a 2GB kit (and if it is a kit, you're probably better off buying 2 individual sticks of 1GB each since they are each less than half the cost of the kit).

The circular did not indicate it but yes the CompUSA faithful would only sell the it as 2x1024 even though I brought in the ad. Sorry guys.

How would I go about finding out what speed and type of RAM is in my computer? I have tried looking in the my computer properties for the speed of the RAM but could not find it. Thanks in advance.

I ended up just buying some Transcend RAM here (in Taiwan). I got an ok deal for just buying it right here in the store. I paid about $80 for 2GB's of DDR2-667.

I am planning to get a stick of 1GB ram but I don't know whether my laptop uses PC5400 or PC5300 ram. I mean I know its 667MMHz that is about it. Is there a way to find out? My laptop is a Dell Vostro 1500 by the way.

To my knowledge no computer was designed for 5400. Therefore the 5300 is fine, but the 5400 will work because the computer will move the clock down from 675 to 667 MHz.

Read the first page. 5400 is nothing more than a marketing scam really.

No computer was technically built for 5400 if the speed crap was to be taken literally. All 5400 means is you might have some additional over clocking potential at best.

I've ordered a Lenovo N200 notebook and I'm now looking at upgrading it's RAM to 2x2GB for 4GB total. On the Lenovo website, they list the following for memory compatibility - PC2-5300 CL5 DDR2 SDRAM 200-pin non-parity SoDIMM.

I'm currently looking at the Crucial 2GB sticks for $99.99 each from ZipZoomFly listed on first page of this thread (model #CT25664AC667). However, when I use the memory advisor on the Crucial website a different model 2GB stick shows up (model #CT699699). Any idea why the "ZipZoomFly version" isn't showing as compatible for this notebook?

    Thank you

    Hey guys (and girls)

I don't really have the time to read all the posts here, so I am hoping someone can give me a quick answer. I am looking to upgrade my wife's Inspiron 1705 from 1GB to 2GB memory. 2 Sticks is fine. She will be using it for browsing the internet mainly. Damn Windows Vista is dog slow right now, making even internet use a chore.

    Thanks.

Please tell me if this RAM is compatible with my Vostro 1400 (T5470, 1.6GHz, 800MHZ ) :

    Transcend 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) from newegg; click here

Also, is heat spreader really that important? I don't mind speading extra $10 to get a Geil 2GB stick with heat spreader. But, will it fit in my RAM slot?

Any DDR2-667 will work fine with notebooks that use DDR2. As long as it is the notebook (200pin) chip that is.

    You know what bothers me?

I'm reading the Transcend warranty for the RAM sticks, and it says if there is a problem you need to contact your reseller to get a replacement. Well, if you request a replacement 90 days after purchase from NewEgg, the egg says you have to contact the manufacturer...

    So what do you do?

Not so sure about that.... The Asus C90 might allow it if the CPU is overclocked, same with the Dell XPS M1710.

About the Transcend, I'm sure if its after 90 days, then Transcend will deal with you directly. It only makes sense.

I am also looking for 2GB worth of RAM for my C90S. Anyone know of any great deals going on? I tried Corsair ValueSelect, since that's what comes with the Velocity Micro version, but I'm not so sure I want to spend $130. If anyone can help me out, I'd really appreciate it. :D

Crap, is that true? I just ordered a SZ680 with a T7500 2.2mghz Santa Rosa processor. It's bus speed is 800 mhz, so why wouldn't it accept ram with a speed of 800 mhz?

Because the chipset only does 667MHz RAM. Some AMD processors might support 800, some laptops with desktop processors might support 800, but if you have the Santa Rosa chipset you get 667.

Seriously though, there hasn't been a significant speed increase since we went to 533MHz DDR2 RAM. After that, the latencies cancel out any real speed increases.

Thanks for the info! No wonder your rep is so high haha.

I was looking around on Newegg and it looks like you can get 2 gigs of the 800 speed stuff for about $97 bucks though. Isn't that about as good of a deal as I would find for that SZ680 from Sony?

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820231132

What would you personally do? It looks like any 4gig alternative is over $200 and the 667 speed stuff only saves you about 8 dollars for 2 gigs. At least on Newegg. I just started looking for Ram so my memory voodoo is still lacking.

EDIT: I just found the first page of this thread haha. Thanks for the useful info! It looks as though the deals could use a refresh as some are expired.

Is it better to have 1 stick of 2gb ram instead of 2 sticks of 1gb ram for any reason? Just as a general rule without price considered?

Well crap, I ordered the system with 2 sticks of 512 Ram thinking that I was just going to swap them out for some 800 speed ram. Little did I know that if I put in one 2 gig stick of 667 speed ram it would have worked with the ram that was already in there. So now I could just get one stick and have 2.5 gigs of ram when if I would have paid 20 dollars more for 1 stick of 1gb ram instead of 2 sticks of 512 meg ram, I could have boughten the 2gig stick of ram and had 3 gigs total ram.

So for you future SZ buyers, just pay the 20 bucks to get the 1 stick of 1gb ram and then buy a 2gig stick later, giving you 3 gigs.

Booo... and it's too late to change my order.

Oh well, I guess I'll just buy 1 stick of Ram and go with the 2.5 gigs of ram. Hopefully that will be enough speed for me. All I really do is Photoshop/Lightroom and some light gaming.

Please let me know if there's anything wrong with my logic. Also I would still love to hear a suggestion on what Ram I should buy for this sleek little Vaio.

EDIT: Is there any downside to running a 512 meg chip in one slot and a 2gig chip in another? That wouldn't create any funny latencies would it?

First of all, I would not call DDR2-800 a marketing Scam. If so, you'd also have to call DX10 cards a scam, because they were released far before any games came out supporting them. I'm sure the next intel platform will support DDR2-800 or faster memory.

One thing you guys are all forgetting about DDR2 800 is the latency. The CAS latency of all the DDR2 800 kits I've seen is 5. Some high end 667Mhz kits that go for the same price as the DDR2 800 kits run at a CAS latency of 4. If your notebook BIOS allows it I'm almost positive that you can run the DDR2-800 at 667Mhz @ CAS latency of 4. Memory bandwidth isn't always about Mhz. So if your notebook supports adjusting of the CAS latency, then DDR2-800 is the way to go, because its more future proof and for now you can drop the latency down to 4, and it will be putting out a very similar amount of bandwidth as if it was running at 800Mhz @ 5 CAS latency.

I already ordered my stick of Crucial 667 haha. Oh well, I'll have 3 gigs of 667 which I'm guessing will be better than 2 gigs of 800 speed 5 cas latency.

LOL, there isn't going to be that much of a difference between CAS 4 and CAS 5. Don't worry about the RAM you bought. One thing I was just thinking of is that I don't think I have seen any single 2GB 667Mhz sticks with a CAS latency of 4 yet. I have seen 2GB DDR2 800 sticks with CAS of 5 though...

I had no idea what the CAS latency was or if you wanted it a high number or low number, and they all seemed to be 5 so I just kind of ignored it. Thanks for the encouragement though.

My subtle sarcasm went undetected, eh. I guess that why I am a chemist and not a comic. The latencies I observed were 4, 4.2, and 5. All the 2GB sticks I saw had 5, so I went with it with no reservations. IMO Future proofing a computer is kind of an oxymoron. :)

I believe that CAS latency describes how many clock signals are needed to pass in order to access a particular block of memory in the same section of RAM. There are three latency numbers, don't remember what they all correspond to though, but CAS describes the absolute fastest amount of time a memory location can be read/written to/from.

Anyway, this is why 533/667 run about the same. 533 typically has a CAS of ~4, 667 is ~5. So despite the fact faster memory runs, well, faster...it takes more clock cycles to access...MHz x cycles = Time...and the amount of time is about the same. Same for 5 and 800...about the same. At least, I am fairly certain of this...but please correct me if I am wrong.

EDIT: rbg08 corrected me on the CAS latencies for RAM...I was one cycle off. Too many lectures in microprocessor assembly code is getting to me...

    G.skill makes some DDR2 667 that runs at a CAS latency of 4. I think they are the only company that does. A 2x1GB kit runs @ $99 for 667Mhz @ CAS 4. It's like the same price as DDR2 800 @ CAS 5.
