New Egg does not list a compatible RAM for
HP laptop DV9700T series (media center). Where do I find a compatibility chart for this laptop to order 4GB 2 DIMMs, please?

Remember your laptop likely has 2x512 sticks so you would have to remove 1 512 stick to put in that 1gb stick making your new grand total 1.5gbs not 2gbs.

Yep. The memory is compatible with your system(almost any DDR2 so-dimm stick is) but there is no way to guarantee that the ram will work without any problem(While shipping, it could get damaged or when putting it in, there could be a ESD). I suggest that you throughly run a Memtest86+(see guide here)

Wow, my local Fry's (in Austin, TX) had Crucial PC-5300 667 SO-DIMM on sale with a $22 rebate. Great deal if my rebate comes through, but regular price was $42. The same stick is $50.99 on newegg with $6 shipping. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148087

    I was surprised - even at apples-to-apples retail. I bought 2 so I get to 4gb for $62.

If you want 4gb, this is a GREAT deal (as long as the rebate actually comes back). I bought 2 x 2gb Crucial sticks (probably these) two weeks ago for $62 w/rebate and thought that price was great. Crucial must be trying to move a lot of inventory hoping that a lot of rebates DON'T come through!

So you probably read somewhere in my sig that my Dell D430 was having issues and warranted a replacement.

Well, to make things even worse my Transcend 1GB RAM chip went bad at about the same time.

Dell claimed the main problem was on the mainboard, and the RAM was just a 2nd issue. So I went ahead and tried to get an RMA from Transcend, but despite the two year warranty (not even lifetime!) they won't honor it because I bought it from a reseller.

NewEgg, even though it has been about 7 months since my purchase, offered to replace the RAM chip so long as I paid for return shipping.

    NewEgg ROCKS!
    Greg

P.S.: I won't be buying another Transcend product. I encourage you not to either.

I have a 2 gb stick of Transcend memory in my T61 and I haven't had any problems with it. My two 32 GB SSD from Transcend are working perfectly as external drives. Also my 16 gb sdhc card in my nokia n800 has no issues.

Wait for it to hit mainstream, DDR3 is still in its infant stages.

AHHH!!! It's not listed anymore!!! I would have bought the max limit per person at that price! I needed some ram for my laptop too...

I read the guide, so 5400 should work the same as a 5300? I have a XPS 1330.

Yeah, it was a good deal.

5400 is still DDR2 memory(as Gophn mentioned, it mainly just marketing) so it should work just fine. If there is a problem with the ram(ram can get damaged while being shipped or just being handled-both are very unlikely), use the warranty on the ram(most manufacturers have a lifetime warranty so it should be no problem).

there was a deal on newegg a couple of weeks ago for a 4GB of ram at $45 after a rebate.

i sold my 2x1's for $30 on craigslist and bought 2x2's for $45...

so it's getting pretty ridiculously cheap. might as well upgrade for $15.

    You originally wrote

Note 1b: All Santa Rosa [w/ mobile Intel 965 chipset] notebooks WILL NOT take advantage of DDR2-800.... it will just be underclocked to 667. So do not waste your money, just get DDR2-667. Only a few notebooks [w/ desktop Core 2 Duo's (Conroe)] at the moment can take advantage of the DDR2-800 memory. Thats it.

    I ask

Is there no way (if you are adventurous) to take advantage of DDR2-800.
Perhaps use software to affect the latency, timing etc
If this can be done, please can you provide the way to do that

    Thanks

if you can overclock your cpu in the notebook then you will be able to use more than the 667..but otherwise no it will not be used at 800

    Thanks Zfactor for your response.

As you can tell this new to me.
You say "if you can overclock your cpu in the notebook ...."
I ask "How do I find out if I can overclock the notebook cpu?"
I have seen info with regards to overclocking desktops but nothing on
    notebooks.
