Is 4GB of RAM really necessary though? Or is it best to wait in my case? I already have 2GB RAM...
-
-
. I'll play with Vista PAE mode (allows access to all 4GB, but can cause other problems) and see if that's stable.
-
-
The same date shipping nowdays is a norm with the retailers like Newegg and Fry's. -
-
Wow! Some nice RAM deals here!
I was originally planning on just buying another 1GB stick for an open slot, but heck! Might as well get the 2GB as it's only a little more than I was originally expecting to pay for 1GB.
Thanks for the info Gophn! -
-
though the OS can only see 3GB-ish.... which would be a waste [of 1GB] if one were to get 4GB of RAM.
But I feel that its OK to max out your RAM if the price is right... as well as help future proof the system for a later upgrade to Vista... which would support the full 4 GBs.
Note: Due to the limitations with the mobile Intel 945 chipsets, notebooks [with that chipset] can only max out at 3GB of RAM... regardless of the OS that is used. This is a low-level motherboard limitation, not a software limitation. -
Even if you're a power user, practicing multi-tasking, running a ton of applications and open brower windows, all at the same time, with 2GB under XP it's hard to imagine a condition when you'll start running out of memory.
Anything more that 2GB will be just sitting there, underutilized. -
Actually, the main reason that some people say that anything over 2GB on XP is a waste is simply because the operating system itself doesn't use that much on its own for it's own tasks. If you have an application that is particulary RAM hungry (examples like BF2, Premiere Pro) on XP then you *will* see a difference in that application when it asks for memory that's there. XP itself just doesn't do much with RAM over a certain amount but applications can.
-
So what is the verdict with 32-bit Vista? Will I see that much of a difference between 2GB and 4GB. I have just bought my computer (T7200 Core 2 Duo) and now I can upgrade to 2GB (2x1) for $65 shipped. Is it worth the extra money for 4GB, or will 2GB be more than enough for right now?
-
yes the Vista 32-bit can see up to 4GBs.

Drat! I was on the edge of picking up some of the SuperTalent or Patriot RAM and then they go OOS...just my luck.
Here's hoping Fry's website comes back up soon, that Corsair looks like it would do the job nicely as well. -
Well.. just wait until eWiz gets more stock in on the SuperTalent
- or get the GeIL 2GB for $85
- or the Corsair on the Fry's site (if that comes back up)

Just received a stick of the Corsair 2GB from Outpost this morning! At least on what I got, they used Micron IC's. Seems to be pretty common for the 2GB density right now.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. It looks like newegg has that ram for 2 dollars cheaper tho after you factor shipping.
Im not worried about a just couple dollars so i was also wondering whats the best brand to get for an R52 Thinkpad with P-M 750/60 HD/DVD Burner/ radeon x300/ xp pro i just bought for $599? Im a newb and have never owned a laptop before (still dont, its sitting at a shipping dock in hong kong)
Looks like newegg has that corsair, kingston, transend, crucial, pqi, pny, g-skill, and allcomponents for roughly the same price. So many choices! What do I go withLast edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Id like to stick with newegg unless some1 else is alot cheaper. they got this badass leather thinkpad case i want to buy for this and i can get it at the same time.
-
Something tells me to get the corsair. Maybe I should just go ahead and get that?
-
Although the Allcomponents brand only has 1 year of warranty... thats why I would not recommend it. -
Hmm....do any of these retailers accept an international credit card AND ship internationally? Great deals, but I really hope I can get some 2GB sticks. Fry's rejects my order saying RAM can't be exported
-
eWiz will ship internationally.
