they are both good. get the one with the better price.

Edit: Well, just pulled the trigger on the patriot 2gb 1 dim stick from outpost.com!
Edit 2: Actually, i ended up staying up till 5am my time, that's the time frys.com's CS line opens, and canceled my order. I thought i could get away with the 2gb 1 dim stick, but soon after i placed the order, i realized i would lose the dual channel capability. -
is the OCZ RAM better than the SuperTalent RAM I ordered last week?
-
Thanks for the help guys finally pulled the trigger on the ocz for 79.99 and for that price i couldnt say no. I dont understand why dell is still charging so much for there 4gb upgrades I just checked and it said 1500 to go from 1gb to 4gb.
-
The SuperTalent is not any better an the OCZ, and vice versa.
They are both good and probably has the same chips... also both have lifetime warranties. -
Corsair RAM:
1x1 gb
31.99 + $5 shipping = $37

Hey Gophn, has there been a slow down in ram HOT deals?
The prices are probably as low as they're going to get for the time being.

Dual channel is pretty not as useful as it once was when it was introduced during the AMD Athlon XP and P4 days.
I would not worry about that in the current age.
The bottleneck [for heavy use] is usually not the memory controller.... especially in notebooks. -
So basically you have your system's memory running an asymmetric dual channel, not a symmetrical dual channel. With your 3gb's total, there probably isnt much difference between running it symmetrical and asymmetrical.
Since i ordered my notebook with 512mb's, i'm wondering what would be more advantageous- run the memory in symmetrical dual channel by ordering 2 1gb sticks, or just purchase a 2gb 1 dimm stick [again] and add it to the 512mb's that i will already have? From what other's have stated, there will be little difference between the two setups. The 2gb 1 dimm stick however will allow me to upgrade the memory in the future in case i am in need of more memory.
In case anyone else is wondering, i found this pretty cool page on intel's site explaining the difference between asymmetric and symmetric dual channel [It's for a desktop, but you'll get the idea]:
http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/cs-011965.htm -
Because they can.
That's the only reason. -
Ugh...4GB...$180...cannot decide!
*starts rummaging around for things to sell to get the money* -
Thats not even after rebate
Damn RAM is cheap right now....
-
I have a question: I just ordered a Dell Latitude D830, with the Santa Rosa chipset, but opted for the lowest option of ram, as Dell charges an arm, a leg, and your firstborn for RAM upgrades. There is a listing for ddr2 800 ram (HOT! SuperTalent 1GB DDR2 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (Samsung) ) but I have read before that santa rosa only supports up to 667 mhz ram. Would thhis ddr2-800 work with my santa-rosa based Dell?
-
Why do you want 800MHz RAM?
It will be more expensive and most likely provide little to no performance increase. The Core 2 Duo is not as memory bandwidth as the Pentium 4 by a long shot. 667MHz RAM is more than enough to satisfy the C2D. -

This thread doesn't seem to offer much for the European members.
Here are some possibilities identifed by Slumbermann and originally posted in the Samsung forum:

Transcend 2GB SO-DIMM € 85.00 / ~£57,40
2GB DDR2 PC-667 Kingston SO-DIMM €94,50 / ~£63.70
2GB DDR2 PC-667 Kingston SO-DIMM € 98.20 / ~£66.30
Corsair Value DDR2 SO-DIMM PC5300 2048MB ~€133.50 / £90.01
1Gb Module
1GB DDR PC-667 Corsair SO-DIMM €29.20 / ~£19.70
Kingston 1024MB DDR2 PC533 SO-DIMM €33.24 / ~£22.50
Apacher DDR2 1024MB PC2-4200/533 €34,90 / ~£23.60

Nice John, I'll add an International section.

Hey everyone, I want to mention that when you get your RAM, the FIRST thing you should do after installing it is run Memtest86+ for a few hours. I just got my 2x2GB from ewiz, and one of the modules is giving errors.
Many times that I have bought RAM over the years I have found bad modules with this tool (out of the last 4 modules I have bought, 2 have been bad). They are more common than you think, and easily can cause problems with system instability and crashing.
The return policy for ewiz, for example, is 14 days AFTER YOU ORDER, not after you receive the RAM. So you have a very limited time where you can return it, otherwise you need to deal with getting it covered under warranty which can be more of a pain.
Memtest86+ is open source, and available on many linux boot CDs (Ubuntu 7.04 has it), as well as directly from the web site. -
Gophn, please add these two deals to your list.

Just thought i would update.
So i did end up reordering the Patriot 2gb 1 dimm stick from frys.com. Ordered it on 6/19 and it just arrived this morning, 6/21.
The chip reads: D9HNH -
-
Good suggestion though, I'll add it to the thread. -
Yeah, once in a while you get a bad one. No big deal, as long as you test it right away!

Komplett's RAM prices seem to have taken another drop. This link is to the UK site, but they are a multinational European company.
John -
hypertrophy - all that website says for these two chips is:
D9HNH HQ-37E 1 Gbit
D9HNL HQ-3 1 Gbit
What is the difference? Do you know what the numbers mean? -
Look closer at the link for the Micron D9 series chips. It explains what the HQ, 37E, and 3 stand for. Other then the info on the website, i have no idea. As far as i've read, for desktops at least, the D9HNH and D9HNL arent one of Micron's best chips for overclocking [doesnt apply to me].
Thanks Gophn. I'll pass on the info. -
Notebook memory should not even be relied on for overclocking.... just stability.
-
what can i buy best, the corsair 2gb x 2 for my 570RU? it has cas latency 4, does it make a big diffrence with 5?
what clevo reseller offers their notebook without RAM? i can't find one... -
-
i don't think they are such good of a reseller, and i dont want a complete barebone :/
RJtech is expensive too -
RJtech is probably one of the best resellers that I have dealt with and spoken with. They will be willing to pricematch systems and RAM prices if you contact them. -
I was thinking about buying two of these for my system below.
http://shop3.outpost.com/product/5284707#detailed
How would I know if this is compatible with my notebook? -
-
-
if you are planning on putting that ram into your xps 1710, i wouldn't. thus far, other than notebooks using conroe, no other notebook can use 800 mhz ram. it will just downclock to 667..
-

John -
I am not sure but the CPUz screenshots of the 800mhz ram i have seen show 5-5-5-15 timing when running at 667mhz. not better then 667mhz ram.
-
Anyone spot any good 2GBx2 deals lately?
I've checked:
Tigerdirect
OCZ $249
Corsair $249
Newegg
GeiL $279 - out of stock
PNY $227 - out of stock
Also, I know it's been mentioned here that companies don't really matter, but is there any company you wouldn't buy from? Thanks. -
I think that that these RAM sticks are compatible with my Vaio but I just want to make sure though.
Here is what I currently have in my notebook:
ddr2-667 sdram pc2-5300 so-dimm
Compatible yes?
Edit.
Also, are these also compatible with my notebook? Whats the difference between this and the Kingston one? -
-
^Sure sure?
I don't want to order it then find out it doesn't work and need to ship it back. -
Yeah I am sure. It is the same ram as you use now. It will fit.
It might be hard to access on of the ram moduls because it is under the keyboard but it is not too hard to install. -
Thanks wave. Imma order it right now.
