as long as it takes 200 pin DDR2 sodimm's it will be fine.

If you have one of the new santa rosa ones you should be able to use 4gb of ram even.

    but thats abit overkill :p

    I have some questions:

    1) What is the difference between SO-DIMM and just DIMM?
    2) What does 200-pin mean, that it will only fit in a laptop?
    3) Does Value Select memory suck?

    From WikiPedia: SO-DIMM

SO-DIMMs are a smaller alternative to a DIMM, being roughly half the size of regular DIMMs. As a result SO-DIMMs are mainly used in notebooks, small footprint PCs (such as those with a Mini-ITX motherboard), high-end upgradable office printers and networking hardware like routers.

SO-DIMMs have 72, 100, 144, or 200 pins. The 100 pin package supports 32-bit data transfer, while the 144 and 200 package supports 64-bit data transfer. This compares to regular DIMMs that have 168, 184, or 240 pins, all supporting 64-bit data transfer.

Are they still able to support 32-bit data transfer? All I know is that I have Vista Home Premium, is that 32 or 64 bit?

Is this good ram? Because I havn't bought it yet, but I'm about too and I want to make sure its decent RAM. If not, I'll just have to get better ram then.

32-bit and 64-bit data transfer has NOTHING TO DO with the OS programming... its entirely different.

Memory data transfer (32-bit, 64-bit) is NOT THE SAME as the OS types (32-bit, 64-bit).

They are two entirely different things.

And any RAM that I have posted is highly compatible and reputable (with good vendors and lifetime warranties).

Thanks for clearin' that up. But how good is value select ram?
I'm also looking at This. Have any of you guys experienced Patriot RAM before? This is good because then I will have the opportunity to upgrade to 4GB's of RAM if needed in the future. Except it doesn't say if its 200-pin or what.

This is why they came up with the "PC" specs, like "PC-5300", so you don't need to worry about all of these details. Just check what your laptop needs (it's PC-5300), and if the RAM is also PC-5300, then it will work.

The only caveat is that you need to make sure you get laptop RAM (SO-DIMM) instead of regular desktop RAM.

It doesn't say on Dell's site whether or not they used PC-5300 or whatnot. They just say DDR/667, but I'm guessing that they use PC-5300, isn't that pretty much the standard?

I'm sure it's been discussed but this thread is getting so long!!!!

I noticed that 800mhz RAM is listed on the front page. What laptops can use this RAM to its potential?

Pardon me asking if someone already has.

Even though the Santa Rosa chipset provides an 800MHz FSB for the CPU, it only provides 667MHz for the RAM. Since Santa Rosa is the newest chipset (from intel at least), I'm not sure there's anything else out there with 800MHz RAM.

The new AMD turion X2 65nm processors (tyler) can use DDR2 800mhz ram unlike intel's santa rosa. Therefore all I would have to do is update my notebook with one of these processors (since they still use socket s1) and I could use 800mhz ram...

Yes, that is correct. I was just asking what laptops can use it to its fullest potential.

Are you sure? I haven't done much with laptops, but I've built a few desktops (it's been a few years). In the desktop world AMD motherboards and Intel motherboards are entirely different animals. Meaning, you can't put an AMD processor into an Intel-based motherboard (and vice versa).

I think you mis-understood me I never meant to imply that you could put the turion x2 into a intel motherboard I meant switching my current turion X2 (90nm) with the new turion X2's (65nm) that support 800mhz ram. AMD processors don't fit into intel motherboards and vice versa whether it be desktop or notebooks.

Some of the new AMD based HPs that are now selling come with the new 65nm turion X2s therefore these notebooks can use DDR2 800mhz ram.

Yeah should work if it uses the same socket.

Intel and AMD are diffrent monsters when it comes to memory. Intel depends on its chipset. So a new chipset could allow use of DDR2 800 but the cpu doesnt matter.

AMD controlls the memory from the cpu itself with the on-die memory controller. So a new cpu gives you a whole new option on memory.

That point made tho, still the benifits of moving from DDR2 667 to 800 is not very big and the cost is not worth it.

Id estimate 1-3% boost in performance but nearly 2x the cost.

Once the price goes down tho it may be worth considering.

Hey guys, I've finally narrowed it down to 2:

    -Corsair 2GB DDR2-667 SODIMM Notebook Memory --- $99.99
    -OCZ 2GB DDR2-667 SODIMM Notebook Memory --- $89.99

And btw, OCZ has dropped it's price $10. So now its $89.99. I've heard great things about both brands. Think I should save the $10 and go with OCZ?

OCZ was $79.99 shipped two weeks ago at frys.com, but that's still a good price. If they both use Micron chips, then as Gophn would say, go with the cheaper one. :D

    Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade my E1505 to 2GB here in the near future, but I don't know much about RAM and such. It seems everything I start to read forces out the dyslexia in me and I can't make sense of any of it. I just know I want some better perforamce without paying a huge amount! That being said, could someone suggest any 2x1GB RAM from here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...d&Configurator=MemoryConfigurator&Order=PRICE According to newegg, all of that RAM should work on my computer. Also, once I've replaced my RAM, about how much would the 2x512MB sticks I have in there fetch on eBay or some place similar?

    Thanks for all the help.

EDIT: Also, if there is RAM somewhere else for cheaper and of good enough quality elsewhere, please let me know as I'll order it from anywhere, I just thought newegg was a good place to start.

PC5300 and PC5400 are the same thing (they exist for both desktops and notebooks)

It works like this, you take the speed of the ram and multiply it by eight therefore you get 667Mhz x 8 = 5336
All that happens is that some manufacturers round this down to 5300 while others will round up to 5400 (i.e. PC5300 or PC5400), that is all there is to it.

The same story exist when talking about PC4200 vs PC4300 :)

    the 2x2gb from frys deal means 170/2 = 85$ per 2gb stick.

but you may not need 4gb.

I bought 2 buy.com 2gb sticks a week ago. They still have not shipped. Their website said they came back in stock, and now they are out of stock. Has anyone heard any news from buy.com as to when these might come? My new D830 will be here in a week. Will my sticks ever come, or should i cancel?

You do know they ship the products out from Ohio, right? :D I think they upgraded the shipping for the ram deal to Express Shipping. Shipping was pretty quick for me too, like 3 days. Their ground shipping is pretty slow. I ordered a new 3.5" HDD a couple of days after ordering the ram, and it took 6 days, not including the weekend. I hate DHL.

At least DHL will get something to you as fast as they can though. UPS had a package of mine arrive in Indianapolis last night (the delivery address is in the city), but today they just drove it around (was not scheduled for a delivery today) and it 'arrived' back from where it left that morning...

They could have delivered it but did not. UPS always does things as late as possible.

I agree. I've had both UPS and DHL do the same thing to me in the past. I find FedEx to be one of the best services in my area. USPS Priority mail is THE best [tracking is a little lacking, but the packages always get to their destination]. Both FedEx and USPS deliver on Saturdays [HUGE plus].

I hate it when a package arrives on friday at the local shipping depot. The package just sits at their depot for the entire weekend, making you have to wait an extra 2 days before the package finally arrives at your doorstep at 6:59pm.

Is there any better deal than this out there? It looks almost
too good to be true. I really only need 2 GB for now but for
$75 more I can get 4GB and not have to sell the 2 1GB later,
    it seems worth it.

Should I buy it or wait? I ordered my T61 with only 512 knowing
I was going to buy more RAM and I think I probably have atleast
2 weeks to shop around if you think I should wait.

$159.99 is the cheapest I've ever seen for 4GB. The price could go down more, but it might also go up again. It was close to this price 2 weeks ago and then it went up to $169.99.

If you have the money and won't feel bad if the price goes down further in the next 2 weeks, go ahead and buy it. :)
