Hi Guys,
My Inspiron 1520 has been shipped with 1 Gig of Ram (2 X 512MB - I beleive). I plan on upgrading to 2 Gigs of ram (2 X 1 GB) - I was going to order this brand / model through Newegg - Can you let me know if this is the correct one to order and if it will fit in the notebook?
CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Notebook Memory - Retail - $90 Shipped.

Also - I don't mind spening $20 more if I can get a better performing RAM. Thanks!

Also I take it that any DDR2-667 listed on the front page would work in the laptop - I mean physically fit? -
Cas Latency DOES NOT really matter within a notebook environment.... since you will not overclock.... the performance difference between CL4 and CL5 are little (2-5%
to nothing.
and yes, all the memory listed should fit correctly in most of the notebooks that are currently on the market. -
The "physical fit" is 200-pin SO-DIMM. Any 200-pin SO-DIMM will physically fit. The "performance" is DDR2 667, or PC 5300, or PC2 5400. They all basically mean the same thing and are for your laptop.
Also, all of the major brand RAM manufacturers are using the same micron chips. So if you choose from Corsair, Kingston, OCZ, Patriot, and many others. They are going to perform the same and have a lifetime warranty. You should buy whatever is the cheapest.
This applies to laptop memory. Desktop memory differs more in performance from brand to brand/ value RAM and performance RAM. -
Also, I really believe the CL-4 is a typo on the frys.com website. The exact same part number on newegg.com shows CL=5. If you go to corsair.com you will not find any DDR2 667 200-pin RAM with anything but a CL-5. I think all DDR2 667 200-pin RAM is CL-5.
-
Thanks Stallen and Gophn - Appreciate the education and advice. My last question is: Will 2 X 1 GB performance be supperior to 2.5 GB (1 X 2GB Ram and 1 X 512 GB)? I do plan on playing games. Thanks.
-
the more the better.
(for high textured games and resource hoggers)
but I doubt you would even notice from day to day usage. -
With the 2GB + 512mb setup, your memory [G965 chipset] will be running in Flex mode, meaning the 512 module and 512mbs from the 2GB module will be running in dual channel, while the remaining 1.5GB's from the 2GB module will run in single channel mode. -
Thanks Hypertrophy

I'm trying to choose between Kingston and Crucial for 2GB stick. The prices I've found are very similar, not sensational, but well below retail. The Kingston edges in front a bit, since it's a "system specific" module (as opposed to their ValueRAM series). Your thoughts and experiences will be greatly appreciated.
-
did you read the first page, the deals on that page are updated daily.
I would recommend to get the Patriot 2GB DDR2-667 for $99. Its the best deal for now, since the amazing OCZ 2GB's got sold out again.
Memory is memory, brands can try to create an image, but it really comes down to the chips and the warranty (which is usually lifetime anyways).
System specific memory... thats a good one... has not been like that for a long time now.... you should be fine with any memory nowadays. -
As for the "system specific" (note the hyphens in the original post) memory, I'm well aware that this is glorified terminology for most part. I won't be shocked if their standard equivalent stick is the same thing, maybe it's just the word "value" (sometimes means lower quality) that bothers me more than anything.
Anyway, I appreciate your thoughts. I might as well reconsider and just pick the best deal available. -
I always try to only post reputable vendors and memory that has lifetime warranties.
Any of the memory deals posted are good options... brand should not be a huge factor... especially if they are getting the same chips from the same manufacturer. -
I ran into a semi issue with the patriot ram. Someone posted a picture of his ram displaying D9HNL 7GE22 micron chips on his ram sticks. When I received mine (from outpost as well), mine had D9HNH 7GE11 micron chips. Is this something to be concerned about? Because to me it looks like older micron chips were used on mine.
-
OCZ is good reputable name brand stuff.
-
I know I mentioned that you should do it before, but now I put up a guide on how to test your new RAM. This is a very important step when you just get your new RAM!.
-
OK... added.

Corsair 2gb pack, cl4, 667 is out of stock, sorry if someone already posted, i didn't take the time to read the posts

added another great deal for 1GB DDR-333... no rebates BS

The Patriot 2GB sticks are good stuff. I ran the memtest yesterday for each module for a total of 3 passes each, about 1hr 45min each, and no errors came up (knock on wood).

So do the order and it will be determined at Checkout... if you do not like the shipping cost, just cancel. -
So here's the thing. Am I right that this pc 5400 ddr2 ram can fit desktops and labtops? Also another thing is there anyone that makes 4gb modules I'm just curious if anyone knows of such a thing.
-
Welcome to the NBR forums.
current/new notebooks use DDR/DDR2 SO-DIMM

desktops use DDR/DDR2 DIMM
big difference in physical form.... you cannot use desktop DDR2 for your notebook, and vice versa.

Just want to toss this out to everybody, due to my Asus C90S being a brand new machine the bios is not very mature yet and it had compatability issues with the 2x2gb OCZ I ordered last week.
It was on sale at frys for 180$ when I bought it, a killer deal for sure. Since I dont feel like letting it sit around and collecting dust untill a new bios is out I am sending it back to them. They are going to give me a full refund on it.
However I will give anybody on the forums between now and then to say they would like to buy it from me instead. 180$ + shipping one sodimm is totally unused and the other is only had less than a weeks worth of use.
If somebody is intrested let me know right away and I can start a for sale thread and take pictures of it and setup a transaction via paypal. Im probably going to ship it out to frys tomarrow afternoon so this is a very limited offer, just trying to give somebody the oportunity to have it cheap since prices have gone back up to 200$+ for a 4gb kit.
If nobody is intrested no big deal.

2x2gb DDR2 667 5-5-5-15
OCZ w/ lifetime warrenty -
^Dam I wish OCZ didn't have problems with the g1s-a1...
I have to pay tax for frys (live in WA), so it would get it close to buying G. Skill ram from newegg.com. Is that brand better and does the heat spreader do anything for cooling or just a marketing gimmick? -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Heatsinks are a gimmick, they dont help any. Plus with a notebook size is important if a heatsink takes up too much space it may cause problems phisically fitting 2 dims into the machine (you can just take them off tho usually)

2x1gb corsair ram with 4cl is back in stock, ddr2 667, i think...
If it is not actually in stock when you order, you should get it within a week, i ordered 3 days ago, they told me they were currently OOS and i just got an email today that they have shipped it. -
get this fast, its in stock

Hello,
i'll buy a m9750, and i think that i'll buy ram after market.
What is the most recommended :
2Gb crucial for 128$
or
4Gb corsair for 307$ (does the os [xp or vista] will recognize all the memory ?)
I'm more hot for the 2Gb :0.
To have 2Gb with my AW, i must add 165$, so the deal is about 37$ (165-128) for 2Gb.
The 2Gb kit is this one :
how long does it takes ? 5min ? 10min ?
Thanks. -
installing notebook memory is extremely easy... less than a minute usually.
Simple Guide for Installing Notebook Memory
Any of the brands are fine really.
Rule of thumb for memory:
- Brand is not important
- Make sure it has lifetime warranty (which most do)
- Has no instabilities or errors (which should be checked when testing the unit)
- DO NOT worry about dual channel, the technology has gone and pretty much past. Dual channel nowadays barely gives any performance increase (2-3%for current systems.
-
How can I find out?
Did you run memtest86+? Why didn't it work? I see that you have immature BIOS. The T61 is brand new as well. I'm freakin' out!!!! -
His notebook is using a desktop Core 2 Duo (Conroe), which is why the BIOS might be immature for supporting a lot of notebook memory.
Notebooks (like your T61) with Santa Rosa platform should not worry. -
What about the 2*2Gb kit ? Does it worth the price actually ? Or should i wait for an eventually futur upgrade ?
Thanks -
the 2x2GB kit is not really worth it... its more of a marketing gimmick nowadays.
Dual channel, like I said before, does not really do an noticeable performance increases as it did back in the Athlon XP and Pentium 4 days.
For the better deal, get 2 separate sticks of 2GB. -

I sent the memory back to frys guys, it was only incompatible with my computer in power save mode for some reason (and possibly overclock mode not sure) but it ran fine in normal mode with the power cord in.
I went ahead and ordered a 2gb dimm of Geil from newegg for 110$ trying new things here since people have reported issues with the patriot ram for sale in the c90 aswell.
Ironicly the chapo kingston is supposed to be doing just fine
(but its sold out right now) -
I just contacted fry's and there are only 28 sticks left on the OCZ 2GB 667 Mhz RAM for 84.99 and they wont be ordering any more! I hope they turn out fine cause i ordered one just now >.<

I just wanted to say there is indeed CL4 DDR2 667 So-dimms out there. Not sure how many people make them but while trying to look up the IC's the memory I just ordered uses I found right on the Gskill home page an add for CL4 DDR2 667 So-dimms.
Probably not worth the extra cost tho.
4-4-4-12 are the timings for a 1gb, they dont have a 2gb one.

Gophn, this is such a great thread/help, maybe we should think about cleaning up the unneeded posts so people can get to the good stuff you posted faster!
-
That might be an idea.
The main thing the first page, as long as people realize that its the thing to check, it should be fine.
Many people have posted in this thread without having seen the first page. -
which is the best for t61
i ordered a 1gb (1dimm) 61
i'm looking for another 1gb ram -
any of the brands that I have listed are reputable and highly compatible.
So you should just choose the one with the best pricing. -
great job keeping this updates
-
Do all the Santa Rosa laptops support the DDR2-800 sodimm? Also, does changing from a default 667mhz to 800mhz stick affect the processor speed?
